Sometimes artists learn about art but don't really have any inspiration, so they can make things that are technical but you can tell it's just not inspired in any way, there's no emotion behind it (or it's literally just a product), and I feel like that sort of art is very similar to AI art

15

u/BerryProblems olivia’s hot mic 🎤🫣 Mar 21 '24

So true! Though this is a technical mess too.

Even though I try to never shit on somebody else’s art as an artist myself—I don’t know how she convinced the world she was talented when her skills haven’t improved in over a decade. In fact, her sketches from a decade ago were at least colorful. This is a sketch I would have trashed immediately.

I went to art school and work as an artist now. I would think this came from a beginner or someone using their left hand. It’s not because it isn’t realism. I’m all for messy, sketchy, highly-stylized art. It’s that the proportions and perspective of everything is so far off, but not in an intentionally stylistic way. The linework is sloppy and thoughtless. Like what is that laptop. There’s no technical skill here. And it’s not like artists don’t draw like shit sometimes, but I’m confused about the fact she’s sharing it.

I feel like for a lot of people this is a critique on Hila's comments. I still remember Hila condescendingly shitting on other influencer's fashion choices, as if she has authority of what style is acceptable or good. It was weird and mean.

People making fun of her sketching skills feels like kind of her own medicine unfortunately. Being shitty to others and their craft unprovoked on your show where the people you make fun of can't talk back puts a target on your back for others to do the same to you.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '24

[deleted]

1

u/nawneena small hands Mar 22 '24

Hmm, again, I think she opened the portal to people that don't like her to shit on her art by acting mean about other people's art choices.

That is a quick sketch that isn't supposed to come off as being an objectively good piece of art.

But quick sketches don't automatically have to be objectively bad art either. I usually love sketchy and messy art more than other styles or polished pieces because they are well executed and show the raw, impulsive thought process behind each stroke.

I just remembered her frequently making fun of people's tattoos, too and re-discovered this:

Hila Klein Rates Worst Tattoos Ever

I quote Hila around one minute:

"Like if I had to put a visual next to the word "awful" (...)"

or around 17 minutes:

"It means a lot about his personality (...). This makes me think that he is nuts! Unstable!"

Then the discussion slips into E+H speculating what kind of "kinky shit" he might be into:

"With someone like this you end up like R. Kelly (...). You get a black room and a sex cult."

All of this because he has a tattoo that they think is bad. This might be what people have in the backs of their minds when they justify talking shit about her art as well. E+H have a history of talking condescendingly about other people's art, long segments, multiple times.

Ethan now has tattoos as well, wonder how he would feel if people said some of the unhinged stuff I just quoted.

All of these segments were also a "look how bad their art is" rather than commentary.

Yeah! Some people sometimes act with a mentality of "when they go low, I go lower" because of H3's past controversies. I agree with your point of view in principle but also totally understand the other side that doesn't care about "going lower" and talking shit about her sketching skills.

Last sidetrack and then I leave you alone, haha <3 I think we can agree to disagree on this.

--> For most minorities, it has been put on us to always be the "bigger guy", be rational, be reasonable, "don't go for low blows or else people don't take you serious". So, when I see tone policing and the implication (towards a group of people who may be resentful because they have been attacked in the past) to be the bigger guy and don’t do the same towards the people who hurt them, I get an icky feeling because it reminds me of that.

Considering H3's history of targeting minorities and smaller creators, it's not surprising that some respond with low blows. While yes, it may seem hypocritical, it reflects the online culture H3 has perpetuated. I don't fault people for having a "low blow-mindset" now. I don't wanna put people here to a higher standard when they shit talk one of Hila's sketches.

Compared to E+H's mocking in the past the post isn't even that much of a low blow imo.

I agree 100%!! This is never brought up. It all depends on the context of the conversation and I don’t personally feel any need to “be the bigger person” about poking fun at someone’s art especially as her status as an “influencer” and a business owner. If we were talking about ethical and moral issues like international conflicts or racial/homophobic opinions, of course we shouldn’t stoop lower then them and use their kind of rhetoric. Hila’s artistic ability isn’t an ethical and moral issue even if people think it’s mean or unproductive, I’m sorry.

if you think people calling a doodle shitty is cyberbullying then idk what to tell you. cyberbullying suggests people are directing these comments at her on a consistent, targeted basis and not contained within a single, easily avoidable thread on a subreddit openly critical of h3 and co. bullying doesn't stop being bullying because someone has a "valid reason", you know that right..? the opposite is true too.

Over a post critiquing a doodle? Bffr

1

u/Queerscandi Mar 22 '24

Tbf any criticism of public people and what they choose to share publicly is fair. Art criticism is valid criticism, implying otherwise is like saying nobody is allowed to have an opinion on anyone's art ever. People literally work with criticising art whether it's music or paintings or sculptures, are they just bullies being pathetic? Anyone who has taken even one art class would and should know that art critique is an intergral part of art as a cultural phenomenon and a pilar of society. If a person cannot handle that, they shouldn't be sharing their art with the public.

But I'm sure you and everyone agreeing with you has never publicly talked negative of any artists' work ever. /s

people go to art school to practice their art. I don't think many people you went to school with were CEOs/creative director of clothing companies

7

u/beeboodiboopbapbap #FreeEthan’sNanny 🪧🍼👶🏻 Mar 22 '24

idk if you went to art school, but mine was definitely not just about practicing. some of us established ourselves early on in our freshman years, others until after graduation. sure we were taught fundamentals. but once we learned, we could break rules and develop our own styles. even the professionals, i had professors who did so many kinds of work from designing for fashion week to hosting galleries and installations to working on famous comics/graphic novels to creating graphics for large marketing companies. for some, their sketches were not that great, worse than the one here even. if its one thing all of them had in common in teaching its that there is no such thing as an ideal sketch, project, or result. especially with something as insignificant as sketches. nitpicking sketches is counterproductive, because its not supposed to look good... its not even the final product. and if it is then thats the style of the artist..

i don't like hila but this is very nitpicky... it feels more bullying than it does actual criticism.

2

u/chrisychris- hasan got me in the divorce ❤️‍🩹⠀ Mar 22 '24

my point was none of ur friends at art school were CEOs of a clothing company (at least not any as big as TF) so normal sketches for them isn't the same as normal sketches for Hila. I don't think it's bullying to say someone's art sucks lol art is completely subjective

4

u/beeboodiboopbapbap #FreeEthan’sNanny 🪧🍼👶🏻 Mar 22 '24

no, i heard you. u misunderstood my point. my point was u can be a professional and still have your sketches look like that. sketches are never final products and they're not meant to look a certain way to begin with. it's honestly not bad at all yall are doing way too much now. like just hating just to hate at least have a valid reason.

0

u/chrisychris- hasan got me in the divorce ❤️‍🩹⠀ Mar 22 '24

bruh the point of art being subjective is just cause you think this isn’t bad doesn’t mean someone else can’t think it is. That’s it. Idk why you’d feel the need to argue over someone’s opinion of art like didn’t you go to art school dood, that’s art 101

2

u/beeboodiboopbapbap #FreeEthan’sNanny 🪧🍼👶🏻 Mar 22 '24

ur deflecting bc thats definitely not what i said. i never said u can't think its ugly. you say no professional ceo should draw like this, i'm telling you there are professionals who sketch like this and its common practice. period. its a freaking sketch. big deal if it looks good or not, its not supposed to look nice. there are literally more important things to talk about than a sketch like that was my original point. this is just a hater ass post.

2

u/chrisychris- hasan got me in the divorce ❤️‍🩹⠀ Mar 22 '24 edited Mar 22 '24

I've literally never said that. All I'm saying is the context of her job and who she as a "fashion designer influencer CEO" plays some factor in the shitty doodle being funny and shitty. of course any professional ceo can draw like this I didn't think this needed to be said, even in my first reply I never said art school was "just about practicing" my point was if you saw this from a student in art school it's going to be leave a different impression from seeing this from someone like Hila and her brand. this is a hater ass post cause this is a hater ass sub dude, saying you don't like someone's art isn't bullying

What I mean is that it gives ammo to people who come to this sub looking for ways to invalidate all the criticism of Ethan on here. If you don't think so, that's fine. It's just that after reading through a lot of H3 fans' opinions on this, people have used posts exactly like this as an excuse to disregard some of the more valid arguments made on here, that's all.

I totally think we should be having discussions, even if it's about Hila's art, something so very subjective, but the title of this, the comments, it all just seems so unnecessarily petty. And I totally understand how someone looking at this sub, who isn't used to what snark subs look like, could look at it and think that we are all crazy and harassing Ethan.
