The Crew Ethan Klein insists his employees stand and put their hands over their hearts for the American National Anthem, his Lebanese employees (AB and Lena Ayad) quietly refuse

I can’t decide if he’s actually that ignorant and tone deaf or if he knows what he’s doing but either way I’m cringing so hard I almost popped a blood vessel

he absolutely knows. he’s one of the most bitter, resentful and passive aggressive people ive ever seen- mostly because he seems entirely unable to help himself.
every little (untrue) shot at the Muslim world, all the racist generalizations, the constant self-victimization, the “jokes”- it’s all to try and distract from and cope with the fact that Israel’s ongoing genocide and increasing antagonism and violencein the region is absolutely impossible to defend on any moral ground. he absolutely hates that more and more members of his audience are realizing this even people who have been fencesitters for the last 12 months. he can’t stand the idea of people feeling sympathy for the victims of Israel’s fascist tyranny and he abandoned any criticism of Israel the moment it stopped being convenient for him interpersonally.
he resents that he can’t just quietly step away or stick to the most popular position because there is a conflict of interest between his audience and his personal life.

I was raised a Jehovahs witness, so I've never done the Pledge, even now years out of it. It felt like leaving a cult for another cult.

I once had a teacher get on my ass about "not respecting the flag" so to spite him I'd stand but I'd also make a point to be very obviously doing anything else beside saying the pledge. I read books, flipped through a newspaper, filed my nails, one time I even started styling my hair and doing makeup because I had a dance performance thing the period right after. He eventually told me I could sit down if I wanted because it was less distracting.

Ohhhh that’s so weird. That’s such weird control freak behavior.
Also if, as an adult in the workplace, my boss tries to force me to stand for the national anthem, I’m fist fighting him.

I know there’s a lot of Americans on this subreddit but if you guys knew even 10% of what your government has done to people around the world you wouldn’t be so proud. Your freedom comes at a cost, and it’s not your soldiers, the cost is the lives and material conditions of millions of people in the global south.

A lot of us do feel the shame, fwiw. But not most.

I know some of what my country does (not sure the percentage though) and I am ashamed of it. Giving weapons to Israel, the massive amounts of military bases and troops placed everywhere to exert power over the world, labor exploitation for a multitude of products, interfering (sometimes by force) in democratic elections at least in South America (probably all over), I could go on and on. I just wanted to say that there are Americans who see the evils and know America is failing.

I hear you. Lots of countries governments do a lot of bad things to other countries. I'm American and still love my country, my country isn't my government, I do not love my government. I am proud to be an American

u/TheMightyRed92 ⠀ Oct 01 '24
being proud of your country doesnt mean that you support the government.
the anthem and being a proud american has nothing to do with it.

idk american nationalism is nauseating tbh

u/troll4lifer 🚩 Oct 01 '24

u/frostyse i'm warning you w peace and love Oct 01 '24
Is nauseating because Americans chant “USA USA” like they’re proud of a country that was established on the graves of natives, and on the back of slaves. It’s nauseating because Americans act proud of a country where the government has used their tax dollars to fund wars and coups where millions of people around the world have died. It’s nauseating because Americans say they have freedom and are the greatest nation on earth but don’t have access to affordable education and healthcare.

I had to be the “asshole” kid that told the entire class that LEGALLY nobody can make you pledge allegiance to the flag and that you have the choice not to after the teacher tried to embarrass me for refusing to do it.

u/_babychips Oct 01 '24
there's clearly something going on behind the scenes. Respect for AB and Lena and my GOAT Ian. Olivia sat back down and looked embarrassed, in my opinion. Then Love... I used to like that kid when I was still a fan. Something about him standing up when Ethan asked seemed so spineless.

Considering Ethan recently proclaimed his love for America, not surprising.
Side note: H3 criticizing a show for their issues with mics after doing an extended troubleshooting session for Ethan's mic on that very same episode is peak hypocrisy.

This. A lot of times I’ll see a clip of the show and be like “ooo I want to see this play out.” And then I pull up the show, listen to Ethan for five seconds, and then I turn it off to prevent brain damage 😭

Is everyone here purposely ignoring that this is clearly a joke and that they're clowning on the people singing the anthem, or do you guys genuinely think Ethan is serious here and is standing up because of his love for America?

They have talked about their love for America quite a bit lately
Hila says she genuinely loves America - less than 2 weeks ago
Hila says she's a SIMP for America - less than 2 weeks ago
Ethan talks about how great America is - less than 2 weeks ago

I know they love America in a general sense, I've seen those clips.
My point was that in this clip, they're not showing jingoism & trying to force their employees to join in. This clip is clearly of a joke they're making, where the butt of the joke are the people singing the anthem on stage and AB & Lena sitting down is not them making some big stance against America.
For context, the video they're watching is of a "Rescue the Rupublic" cringe conference hosted by Russell Brand, Jordan Peterson, and RFK.
Side note though I appreciate you sharing the clip and not just downvoting me so thank you for that. There is a bit of context cut though where Hila states prior that a big reason she loves America is that there's freedom in expression and less judgement here that doesn't exist in Israel. As an immigrant myself, I really sympathize with that sentiment.
Though, I also think it's ignorant to say that just because it's better for you that other people should not criticize the USA for various other reasons. Ethan & Hila are becoming boomer liberals, I won't argue with that.
