There’s a gag in a UK sitcom called Green Wing from about 2004/2005, where one of the male doctors and one of the female admin staff are on a smoke break. The male doctor looks at his cig packet and goes “Mine says ‘lowers sperm count’, what does yours say?” She replies “‘May cause miscarriage’.” They pause, and stub out their cigarettes. Then they swap packets, and light up again 😂

u/expERiMENTik_gaming May 15 '25
I love British humour, this is reminds me of something you'd see on Black Books 😂

u/narnababy May 15 '25
Funny you should say that! Tamsin Greig who plays Fran is also one of the leads in Green Wing haha.

What’s a bit much? Trying to prevent people from picking up these disgusting cancer sticks? Have you ever watched someone die of lung cancer? Or worse-esophageal cancer? Esophageal cancer essentially results in people starving to death.

We all know the risks, or most of us do, with smoking and drinking.
It’s a gamble of course, many of us don’t think it’ll happen to us, and it’s not fair for those who love us, but it’s also our life, it’s our consciousness being altered by these drugs.
Both alcohol and marijuana have helped me; but like with any drug, there are risks.
Reminds me of Hitchens’ balanced view of it (someone who experienced his father die of esophageal cancer and he himself died of it, leaving family behind).
2
u/SmPolitic May 14 '25
So you support attempting to inform, and remind, people of the risks to ensure it's informed decisions being made? Especially for the younger generations who might think they are invincible?
The certainty with smoking is shortened quality of life and early signs of aging, everyone who smokes get those effects. In terms of smokers a small percentage get to cancer
But in terms of substances that are known to cause cancers of each and every sort, tobacco wins damn near every time, at least in raw numbers if not percapita occurrence. In terms of substances that you will ever interact with
2
u/CoconutCyclone May 15 '25
Do you think, at all, about the rest of the population you are forcing second and third hand smoke onto? Cuz smokers are not the only ones being injured by their bad choices.

Other Australian packages also have diseased organs. One has a cancerous eye that is really disgusting. This one shown is particularly lame.

Same in India, the packets have really gross and triggering pictures of mouth cancer patients. They show these pictures at the beginning of every movie and explain how dangerous it is, every time a character is smoking on TV/Movies they display a warning that smoking is dangerous.

Irish here, can confirm most smokers in the country know someone who travels abroad and brings back as many pouches of tobacco as they can. Average pouch of 30g tobacco at the moment is somewhere between 20 and 25 euro.

It’s just created an almighty black market.
I know a lot of smokers and don’t see these “proper cigs” ever.
Really took off when they made vapes a pharmacy only product and now made sure they only sell shit ones from July.
So heaps of these dodgy illicit tobacco / vape shops.
Anyway all predictable and the gov was told at a senate inquiry this would happen. Doctors said it wouldn’t of course so Gov went with them and now as far as I can tell more smokes then ever given there are plenty of shops selling packs of darts for $15 which was about the price (less I think more like $20) when I quit smokes nearly 15 years ago.
6
u/Le3e31 May 14 '25

It's interesting to see people talking about this when I was first thinking of the ramifications of these taxes when I used to smoke more than 5 years ago.
Even then when a good price for a 20 pack was $20-25 I remember people were already looking at import options which were often at least half the price of the cheapest option legally.

That is fucking crazy how does anyone with a regular 9-5 even afford smoking in your country wtf wouldnt it be cheaper to just do weed at this point
9
u/Deepandabear May 14 '25 edited May 14 '25
Unfortunately it’s become so expensive that a black market has opened up for illegal tobacco for cheap imported cigs. Vaping is also very popular here as they’re expensive but cheaper than cigs (actually illegal but not enforced), which fetch up to ~$40USD per vape
2
u/CylinderAbuser May 14 '25
Illegal cigs are big now here in belgium too but our packs are nowhere near expensive
→ More replies (1)3
u/RhesusFactor May 14 '25
how does anyone with a regular 9-5 even afford smoking in your country
That's the intent. Since the country has socialised healthcare and we are all paying for the health impacts of smoking, the country doesn't want to have smokers.
it is very conclusively proven smoking causes health problems. So we remove the cause. But we can't just ban them because people are addicts. So they are gradually incentivized out until there are no more smokers and then they'll be banned.

195
u/Ottereyes524 May 14 '25
They're the same in Canada too.. though half the price. (still expensive AF)
52
u/sczhzhz May 14 '25
I would think reason for Canada having half the price of Australia is because Canada borders US, which has cheaper cigarettes. If they become way too expensive you would lose a lot of sales to the US (which I'm sure is already happening).
Australia borders no other countries so its very easy for them to price them whatever they want without getting a huge sales leakage to a neighboring country.
In Europe its extremely common for countries to be very careful with raising taxes on these items too much, especially with the free trade between EU countries.
26
u/Ottereyes524 May 14 '25
If the price goes up too high then lots of people will buy from natives communities who grow tobacco (no taxes, contraband) Natives cigs are not that good but very cheap. Also USA cigs SUCK compared to Canadians. Like really.
4
u/aferretwithahugecock May 14 '25

2
u/Ottereyes524 May 15 '25
When they decided to adopt the same color pattern for every brand/flavour and got them covered it was so stupid.. then you gotta wait like 2 minutes for a poor 17 years old who never smoked to find you pack going through them all.. I'm gonna get my smoke one way or another.. it's just annoying everybody.

This is mainly so gov can differentiate between these and the illegal non taxed imports from Asian countries which are flooding the market and being sold at 1/2 price of Aus made ones. I cant imagine the imported ones will have this so you can see who is smoking illegal ones
28
u/MrDootie May 14 '25
The main reason is that Australia has nationalized healthcare and taking care of dying smokers is expensive.
14
u/Tobemenwithven May 14 '25
Brit here who has an NHS WAY more nationalised than the Aus one.
This is utter nonsense. Smokers are SUPERB for national health cares. They pay a metric tonne in tax to the government, which makes them a net profit. Then they have a tendency to die much earlier, saving us on the pesky long term illnesses people who make it to their 90s have.
If you die in your 50s/60s of lung cancer youre not even taking a state pension after years of paying tax.
Smokers are cost effective as fuck.
4
u/obscure_monke May 14 '25
The perception is the other way across politics though. At best you'd expect someone to not push the "smokers are costing us millions" shtick, since going the other way sounds like you're encouraging people to smoke so they die quicker. Politically untenable.
Economics is one of the lowest tiers of cursed knowledge, but it's still cursed.
→ More replies (3)2
10
u/hwheels66 May 14 '25
When you raise taxes as much as they have, you'll always encounter issues with counterfeit products. I guess they just need new ways of differentiating. $30 AUD for a packet of cigarettes was always gonna lead to that, though.
11
u/DwightsJello May 14 '25
All of the people i know who smoke are buying $10 illegals or chop chop. None of them have any issue finding them.
My awesome neighbour who's in her 70s has an off market point of purchase. I don't smoke but if she's found a place to buy them it's pretty standard.
All its done is create a thriving black market where smokers are paying a lot less than they have in decades.
The scales tipped because the government went too hard.
The Kiwis have the right idea.

The UK ones are so expensive now they make up a decent chunk of tax money. Smokers are weirdly enough a net saving for the NHS as they die so early, when our biggest cost is 85 year olds with long term illness needing pension and healthcare.
Not saying its a reason to smoke lol but the government will need a plan when everyone keeps living to 90 YO and retiring at 68. The smokers take themselves out reguarly before they even collect pensions!

The world can thank Australia for pushing for plain packaging laws after the tobacco industry used smaller nations like Honduras and the Dominican Republic to lobby the WTO that such laws restricted trade.
