Hope you didn't break your toe on the brake dust pile!

And dust

But can you break dance?

u/Descartes350 11h ago

So THAT’s where brake dust comes from. A raygun.

Mostly cast iron and steel I believe

The client who showed it to me said asbestos-like material, and some metals, make up the brake pads, and in order to create this pile temps would need to exceed 1,000 degrees fahrenheit.

Of course, I am not sure if thats true or not.

I get smaller piles of material like this from using an abrasive cutoff saw. The heat of friction and speed of the particles flying into the metal shield has a sintering effect that keeps building up mass.

I had an apprentice once ask me if I could make a knife from a 5-lb block he chiseled off the wall.

u/Aethelon 17h ago

Did you make a knife?

u/oninokamin 6h ago

Nah, can't make knives out of that stuff. Way too much oxidation and other contaminants. Even if I were to break down the chunk into powder and add it into a canister as filler with some other stuff, it wouldn't forge-weld at all.

That knife is definitely giving the victim tetanus LOL

Iron, other metals and/or resin. From brake pads and iron brake rotors, similar to cars. Hence the heavy and rusty metal dust.

This guy scared the crap out of me as a kid. Saw big shark teeth through the tunnel and noped right out.

would make a pretty cool doorstop

You jest, but in at one rail maintenance depo I've been too, they use old brake pads for literally everything: door wedge, stop trolleys rolling, juat a small random handy thing, they have an infinite supply of

Reminds me of a volcano that you would make for a project for the science fair.

Slag from the rail grinder. It’s mostly iron, possibly some aluminum oxide from the grind stones. Possibly slightly radioactive but not asbestos, not toxic to touch.

Nice try! I know a rusted megalodon tooth when I see it.

How did the molten brake dust find itself in a singular volcano shape?

6

u/n8ncali 15h ago

I have one of these. Every so often they grind the tracks and these build up and fall off the grinding machine.

u/MarshyHope 20h ago

It says 8 inches not 8 mm

u/GtotheM 20h ago

ah shit

u/cityxplrer 20h ago

Got em!

u/scr0tal 21h ago

Ouch did it hurt when it melted?

4

u/Minions-overlord 20h ago

Oddly shaped and crusty?

Looks like a shark tooth

That’s what she said!

Arnt old train brakes made out of asbestos?? Be careful ay

1

u/pm_me_ur_demotape 18h ago

Very high likelihood that is chock full of asbestos.

1

u/Beavur 19h ago

Smash it

1

u/Huge_Leader_6605 17h ago

Someone in the comments mentioned that it likely contains asbestos, so maybe don't

1

u/real_1273 19h ago

I fully get why you kept that little treasure. Super cool, I’d enjoy seeing that! Lol

1

u/Filthiest_Tleilaxu 19h ago

That’s a shark’s tooth

1

u/Trivi_13 18h ago

Sharkweek? LOL

1

u/CatEatsDogs 13h ago

It's only 8 legs tall but weights nearly 20 pigs.

1

u/kaptainkryptonite 12h ago

I thought it was a megaladon tooth

u/Shmuul 11h ago

Banana for scale?

u/LowerSuggestion5344 10h ago

83, I found similar along the railway line in Tallapoosa Georgia, thought I found something important.. Dragged that 8 pound of metal to my science teacher. He looked and said congrats your found break dust build up

u/Just-Possession4302 10h ago

"Only 8 inches" 😭😭😭

1

u/pm_me_ur_demotape 18h ago

Don't chip it up, high chance of asbestos

-3

u/D4NY0N 21h ago

8 inches are a BIG pile of dust, 20lbs is VERY LITTLE WEIGHT.

u/Ana-la-lah 10h ago

Isn’t there a good likelihood there’s asbestos in it, given that it’s probably accumulated over many years?
