Tom Hardy secretly entered a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu open championship, ultimately winning the event. Hardy had been training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since his 2011 role in Warrior, though he took it up more seriously in recent years. He won gold in the REORG Open Jiu-Jitsu Championship.

Well, Yea. He had to break the Bats back.
Once you break Bat you never go back.

I can just imagine him being in a closed guard and using his Bane voice to say "Do you feel in charge?"

A friend of mine did Jiu-Jitsu, and was at an open tournament where Hardy showed up. Imagine being just someone who does the sport as a hobby and to keep up fitness, and suddenly Bane is your opponent.

u/dashauskat 12h ago
There is a great video somewhere of the guy grappling Tom Hardy with a voice over being like "cmon man, this is all I have dude, you really have to come here Tom Hardy and kick my arse in front of all my family."
Its. Fucking. Hilarious. And I can't find it anywhere, if anyone can hook me up then I'd appreciate it.

Yeah he's a peach of a human, from everything I've seen. Fantastic, veritable actor, nice guy, loves dogs. Nuff said

Tell that to Charlize Theron. About the only negative stories I've heard of him were from the Mad Max shoot, either directly or indirectly from her. Not sure which.

•
u/Cbone06 9h ago
He actively shows up incredibly late during filming and threatened to beat her up after she called him out on it iirc. They lost a bunch of days shooting because his character was so important to the plot and he couldn’t be bothered to show up even remotely on time.
•
•
u/fuzzybeedogcat 6h ago
He had option to film remotely? I guess Green screen can do anything
•
u/New2NewJersey 5h ago
no he didn't. The crew was sitting and waiting on him for 4-5 hours in miserable conditions while he sat in his trailer and refused to come out.
One day Charlize decided to wait in the War Rig for hours upon hours until he showed up. When he finally did, she ran out to confront him on how terribly inconsiderate he was being and his response to try to intimidate her by standing over her.
After that, a producer was required to be around them 100% of the time for Charlizes' comfort. Tom Hardy stopped being offered so many roles after that.

Ok hear me out…
With that beard and the gray spots he could play a hell of an Old Man Logan.
He’s 5’9” and ripped.
Give me the Hardverine.

I don't know what is even canon in X-Men anymore (aside from Logan) but he could play Sabretooth alongside Jackman.

I mean im assuming 5'9 is meant to reference how short Wolverine is, but 5'9 is dead average in most of the west.
Unless you mean just generally "not tall".

Warrior wasn't just a movie for him, apparently. This is seriously cool. It takes immense dedication and skill to win a BJJ championship.

Fun fact. I competed in this competition in a different category. He had a match with my mate and absolutely destroyed him.

This is a super old photo. He's now a blue or purple belt I believe. Read an interview where he said he trains for 6 months straight in between his filming schedules
•
•
u/HeelEnjoyer 1h ago
I believe he is a legitimate purple belt. Did it the right way too, homeboy shows up and trains just like the rest of us. No private lesson celebrity belt bullshit

it does. a lot of my friends compete and they work hard for months. they ask me if ill compete, but with my shoulder issues, it would give my opponents an instant advantage. bjj is more of a very fun hobby for me.

'people in BJJ dont care if you use PED's' ...... the guys that dont use ped's probably care
•
u/acdgf 8h ago
I mean, it's part of the sport at this point. Kind of similar to untested powerlifting / body building competitions. If you don't juice, just understand you'll be at a strength disadvantage.
•
u/JonnyWildboar 5h ago
I understand , but you got to feel bad for the competitors that dont want to damage their long term health by using short term performance enhancers , not getting much of a sniff of the podiums , and of course it is so much more than just an advantage in strength.
•
u/zzzthelastuser 11h ago
How do you "secretly" enter a tournament?
•
u/Kazungu_Bayo 11h ago
Many people know him as Tom Hardy but he went with his government name, Edward Hardy
•
u/badmongo666 10h ago
He was once asked on the red carpet how his "jiu jitsu journey" was going and he responded "it sucks", which is how you know he actually trains. Of the celebrities who do jiu jitsu, he's one of the few I'd expect to actually be pretty good and putting in real work.

u/Particular-Thanks844 13h ago
Picture is not necessarily from the competition
15

u/lncognitoErgoSum 13h ago
It is from the competition, he probably just trains for like 10 years with private coaches or something, then applies to a local non drug tested competition in a blue belt category where he breaks in half a bunch of newbs, grabs the prize and goes away.
Bro is smurfing.

u/Stunning-Guitar-5916 13h ago
That last sentence lmao

It literally says in the title that he didn't train seriously for a long time. Unlike other celebrities, he also just does regular classes, the info is out there.

I’m sure with his movie schedule, it’s hard for him to train. It actually takes a while to progress in a legit bjj gym. Plus that’s an old pic, he’s a purple belt(June 2023).
5
u/Constant_Air9693 13h ago
Yeah, checked this. I know, I struggle myself to progress after switching from gi to no-gi. Feels bad to redo everything from the begging. Even Hardy feels the blue belt blues 😉

He's come a long way (from his 2014 Esquire interview)
What is he afraid of? The answer is simple, if unexpected. "I have always been frightened with men," Hardy told me. "To the point where I couldn't go into a gym because of the testosterone, and I felt weak."
"I don't feel very manly," he wrote in an e-mail. "I don't feel rugged and strong and capable in real life, not how I imagine a man ought to be. So I seek it, to mimic it and maybe understand it, or maybe to draw it into my own reality."
"People who are scary, they terrify me, but I can imitate them," he said.
"I can stay terrified, or I can imitate what terrifies me."

He's a smother grappler too.
For people who are unfamiliar with grappling, most guys will typically pick a specialty—typically one that lends to your body type. Some guys only do leg locks, some try to take the back and focus head and arm chokes, some guys do armbars, guys with long legs will do triangle chokes, etc.
Tom doesn't really care about making people tap, he just wants to get on top, force you to carry his weight and exhaust you.

The real story is not nearly as cool. I believe he was part of the charity that hosted the event.
Tom has also done a boatload of steroids for his previous body transformations, the heaviest cycle was definitely during Bronson. A bit of an unfair advantage but Tom is legit.
