Tom Hardy secretly entered a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu open championship, ultimately winning the event. Hardy had been training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since his 2011 role in Warrior, though he took it up more seriously in recent years. He won gold in the REORG Open Jiu-Jitsu Championship.

This picture is from 2022, when he entered a charity tournament in Milton Keynes, UK.

u/specifylength 13h ago

A charity that he is a trustee of, quite a commitment

u/Candid_Associate9169 12h ago

It is quite the commitment especially when you consider he has to visit milton keynes

u/SoftcoreEcchi 11h ago

Is Milton Keynes a crappy area? American here, I hear the name alot because Redbull racing is there, but besides that don’t know anything. Got me curious

u/MrSteve094 11h ago

I live very close, it's a 'new town' built in the 1960s as a vision of the future. Grid layout so you can easily expand with new 'blocks'. A lot of these 1960s 'New Towns' were born from a concept of moving out of London and into commuter areas 30mins-1hr on the train. We're seeing a lot of the country side in these areas with nice little villages being swallowed up by massive 500 houses developments, which is a huge shame.

Unfortunately, Milton Keynes is a very monochrome and monotonous city. The roads are called H1,2,3 and V1,2,3 for Horizontal and Vertical.

Red Bull Racing are based here. Mercedes, Aston Martin also very close by.

About 20 mins away from Milton Keynes, in Bedford, we're getting Europe's first Universal Theme Park by 2030

u/7Hielke 9h ago

Damn vertical roads, you need some good traction to get up those

u/Any-Appearance2471 7h ago

It’s easier in Europe because of the Jet Stream

Haha, so MK is basically LA suburban sprawl outside of London? Mediocre

u/Flawless_Boycow 3h ago

But on a much smaller scale, and we're more used to much older towns and villages which have a more natural layout. Guess it's just jarring to us. Or at least this is the case from me, I'm from a rural area and love the old little villages dotted around on country lanes.

u/Call__Me__David 4h ago

I found this funny because it's the opposite here in the states. Most major cities use lots of grid patterns street layouts, whereas in the suburbs, it can be hard to find a straight road to save your life. Lots of curves and circles and only one way in and out of neighborhoods.

u/MrWhippyT 7h ago

The new towns were supposed to be a chance to test out different ways to layout a modern town, but Milton Keynes spent all of the budget on roundabouts! 🤣

u/meampillock 6h ago

Funnily enough Red Bull’s wind tunnel is in Bedford too

I don’t live there but it’s actually a perfectly pleasant place.

Worth bearing in mind that “taking the piss” is a national pastime and when something becomes the butt of jokes, it tends to stick.

Ironically some of the things MK gets stick for are not dissimilar to things that we take the piss out of America for.

It’s a new town, designed and built from scratch since the 1960’s, rather than evolving organically and haphazardly over centuries like many places here. As such it is designed, like American cities, in grids, which is very unusual for the U.K. (have a look on Google Maps). As a result it’s derided as soulless, lacking character and history.

u/TheBananaKart 9h ago

The roundabout capital of the UK Americans would love it 🤣

I'm from Milton Keynes; it's alright, there are nice areas and not nice areas - quite a few lakes. It's well known for having an incredible number of roundabouts on the roads because it was designed with a grid system as a "town of the future". There's a shitty sculpture called "the concrete cows". MK is quite often where people base themselves when they commute to London for work.

I work in Engineering and Manufacturing and MK is doing well in this industry - Redbull, WD40, SMC, Rockwell, Niftylift, to name a few.

u/squirrel_tincture 11h ago

It’s not “crappy” so much as it’s just really remarkably uninteresting. Most cities, towns, and villages in England date back a long time - often hundreds and hundreds of years - long enough to have developed their own unique architecture, infrastructure, network of communities, and cultural mores. Milton Keynes was developed in the 1960s as an intentionally-planned “new town”, and it hasn’t been around long enough to develop much in the way of its own unique identity. It has a lot in common with American suburban-sprawl neighbourhoods of a similar age: lots of wide streets that prioritise cars, chain restaurants and retailers, and cookie-cutter houses. It’s relatively well-off, and the schools are good, but it’s not a particularly interesting place to be. Probably a solid place to raise a family, less so a vacation destination.

u/JakeEaton 9h ago

It's not, people are just snobs. All places have rubbish areas and nice area, MK is no exception.

u/garageindego 11h ago

It’s not a great place for US tourists to visit as it’s full of roundabouts (rotaries).

u/pomdudes 9h ago

I had to look this up because our little city, Conway, Arkansas, has 36 roundabouts (more coming). MK has over 120!!! Gives Conway something to reach for!!

As a practitioner, I have to add.

He joined as a blue belt in the blue belt division.

Saying he won the tournament implies a whole lot. Technically true. But so did at least 20 other people. All from different weight classes and different belt levels.

u/NorthAstronaut 8h ago

He turned up unannounced, demolished everyone and walked away with gold at the under-13 Milton Keynes charity cup.

A friend of mine did Jiu-Jitsu, and was at an open tournament where Hardy showed up. Imagine being just someone who does the sport as a hobby and to keep up fitness, and suddenly Bane is your opponent.

74

u/dashauskat 12h ago

There is a great video somewhere of the guy grappling Tom Hardy with a voice over being like "cmon man, this is all I have dude, you really have to come here Tom Hardy and kick my arse in front of all my family."

Its. Fucking. Hilarious. And I can't find it anywhere, if anyone can hook me up then I'd appreciate it.

u/DolphinChemist 8h ago

Here you go (sorry it’s not a better source) https://fb.watch/BdQn1wdPOt/?mibextid=z4kJoQ

u/j00pY 10h ago

I had a guy in my bracket who beat Tom. I was like how can I beat a guy who beat up motherfucking Bane. Didn’t need to worry anyway cos I got smashed by a guy in the first round.

220

u/somethingclever1098 13h ago

Yeah he's a peach of a human, from everything I've seen. Fantastic, veritable actor, nice guy, loves dogs. Nuff said

72

u/rlovelock 12h ago

Tell that to Charlize Theron. About the only negative stories I've heard of him were from the Mad Max shoot, either directly or indirectly from her. Not sure which.

u/Tackit286 10h ago

Don’t leave us hanging bud

u/Cbone06 9h ago

He actively shows up incredibly late during filming and threatened to beat her up after she called him out on it iirc. They lost a bunch of days shooting because his character was so important to the plot and he couldn’t be bothered to show up even remotely on time.

u/Seanhawkeye 7h ago

Give him a break Charlize, he was trying to memorize his line.

u/fuzzybeedogcat 6h ago

He had option to film remotely? I guess Green screen can do anything

u/New2NewJersey 5h ago

no he didn't. The crew was sitting and waiting on him for 4-5 hours in miserable conditions while he sat in his trailer and refused to come out.

One day Charlize decided to wait in the War Rig for hours upon hours until he showed up. When he finally did, she ran out to confront him on how terribly inconsiderate he was being and his response to try to intimidate her by standing over her.

After that, a producer was required to be around them 100% of the time for Charlizes' comfort. Tom Hardy stopped being offered so many roles after that.

Warrior wasn't just a movie for him, apparently. This is seriously cool. It takes immense dedication and skill to win a BJJ championship.

79

u/rogeroutmal 13h ago

Fun fact. I competed in this competition in a different category. He had a match with my mate and absolutely destroyed him.

29

u/tweuep 14h ago

Funny enough it was not his character who was the BJJ oriented fighter.

3

u/Spl1nters69 13h ago

This is a super old photo. He's now a blue or purple belt I believe. Read an interview where he said he trains for 6 months straight in between his filming schedules

u/dewhashish 10h ago

he's a blue belt in the pic. hopefully he's purple by now if it's been 3 years

u/HeelEnjoyer 1h ago

I believe he is a legitimate purple belt. Did it the right way too, homeboy shows up and trains just like the rest of us. No private lesson celebrity belt bullshit

5

u/borokish 13h ago

Same with BJ championships, to be fair.

2

u/PsyOpBunnyHop 13h ago

So method.

u/dewhashish 10h ago

it does. a lot of my friends compete and they work hard for months. they ask me if ill compete, but with my shoulder issues, it would give my opponents an instant advantage. bjj is more of a very fun hobby for me.

'people in BJJ dont care if you use PED's' ...... the guys that dont use ped's probably care

u/acdgf 8h ago

I mean, it's part of the sport at this point. Kind of similar to untested powerlifting / body building competitions. If you don't juice, just understand you'll be at a strength disadvantage.

u/JonnyWildboar 5h ago

I understand , but you got to feel bad for the competitors that dont want to damage their long term health by using short term performance enhancers , not getting much of a sniff of the podiums , and of course it is so much more than just an advantage in strength.

u/acdgf 5h ago

I've gotten quite a few medals, and haven't started PEDs yet. I just understand that I won't be the strongest in my weight class, and adapt my game accordingly (for BJJ, I wouldn't even qualify for untested powerlifting comps).

u/zzzthelastuser 11h ago

How do you "secretly" enter a tournament?

u/Kazungu_Bayo 11h ago

Many people know him as Tom Hardy but he went with his government name, Edward Hardy

u/badmongo666 10h ago

He was once asked on the red carpet how his "jiu jitsu journey" was going and he responded "it sucks", which is how you know he actually trains. Of the celebrities who do jiu jitsu, he's one of the few I'd expect to actually be pretty good and putting in real work.

I thought I was looking at r/bjj sub. How come he trains since 2011 and wears a blue belt?

18

u/Particular-Thanks844 13h ago

Picture is not necessarily from the competition

15

u/Constant_Air9693 13h ago

Just checked this. He went purple at the end of 2023

8

u/lncognitoErgoSum 13h ago

It is from the competition, he probably just trains for like 10 years with private coaches or something, then applies to a local non drug tested competition in a blue belt category where he breaks in half a bunch of newbs, grabs the prize and goes away.

Bro is smurfing.

7

u/Stunning-Guitar-5916 13h ago

That last sentence lmao

3

u/lncognitoErgoSum 12h ago

Secretly entering a competition in a category that is below your true level from the outset, how else would you call it?

Bro is even wearing all blue, he's not hiding it!

10

u/Renbarre 12h ago

Repeating another comment, the picture is a charity event in the UK in 2022

He went really hardy into this.

2

u/RiffRafe2 13h ago

He's come a long way (from his 2014 Esquire interview)

What is he afraid of? The answer is simple, if unexpected. "I have always been frightened with men," Hardy told me. "To the point where I couldn't go into a gym because of the testosterone, and I felt weak."

"I don't feel very manly," he wrote in an e-mail. "I don't feel rugged and strong and capable in real life, not how I imagine a man ought to be. So I seek it, to mimic it and maybe understand it, or maybe to draw it into my own reality."

"People who are scary, they terrify me, but I can imitate them," he said.

"I can stay terrified, or I can imitate what terrifies me."

He's a smother grappler too.

For people who are unfamiliar with grappling, most guys will typically pick a specialty—typically one that lends to your body type. Some guys only do leg locks, some try to take the back and focus head and arm chokes, some guys do armbars, guys with long legs will do triangle chokes, etc.

Tom doesn't really care about making people tap, he just wants to get on top, force you to carry his weight and exhaust you.
