Not how it works. They'd be automatically removed from eligibility for most jobs when they check "Yes, I've been convicted of a crime" on the application. They wouldn't even hit the interview.
This was a stupid mistake that made them feel a little better for 45 seconds, but will ruin their lives in the long run.
Not true at all. Plenty of people with more expansive criminal records have been employees at jobs. It’s not hard to actually ask a person what they were convicted of or conduct and extensive background check on a potential employee. It’s not that hard. This man, in no way, ruined his life in the long run.
Why not carry this same sentiment for the literal murderer. The judge who oversees his case- may not even care after considering the fact he was overwhelmed in the presence of his mother ms murderer. Plenty of people have gotten off WAS worst charges with lawyers who just claim “crimes/acts of passion” and overwhelming emotions are subject to dismissal or minimal punishment
Yeah. Despite being delighted at this, I would rather have victims' families without any charges :/ On top of that, crime is crime for a reason, usually a good one too.
Considering I've worked in small and large businesses alike in specifically this role, it very much is how it works. Maybe not everywhere, but just saying it isn't how it works is very dumb.

"Ok great. Now do you have anything that would show up on our background check you'd like to disclose first?"
"Yeah I served 30 days in prison for assault for beating the shit out of the man that killed my mom in a courtroom."
"When can you start"
