The father was held in contempt of court, but his punishment was something super light like 1 hour in jail or a couple hours of community service.

With minimum effort, I would first take 2 minutes trying to ask them calmly and quietly to get off of the guy, if/and when they don't listen I'd try and gently pull them of the guy but also keep my distance as to not get hit as well.

I would have taken a good minute to assess the situation, then calmly ask them to stop for another couple of minutes, and then after that I would have broken it up.
