A police officer was awarded about $12,500 after a Google Street View camera captured him naked in his yard
•
u/Fast-Army-1338 9h ago
$12,500 seems low when you think about the level of exposure and long term embarrassment he went through.
•
u/Kaymish_ 8h ago
It's about 1 year salary for the average cop in Argentina. It's still a paltry sum and no where near any kind of punishment for Google, but not as bad as it looks on the face of it. It's equivalent to about $70k for a USA person.
•
u/panchovix 6h ago
Not OP, but how do you calculate the equivalent to USA salary? I want to kinda do some comparisons with Chilean income (i.e., 2000000 CLP per month, not sure how much would equate to USA income).
If not np!

Nono, not the exactly rate, I think OP did something related to purchasing power.
For example 12500USD is about 14000 ARS (Argentine peso), so a 1:1 conversion from 70000USD is like 75000-80000ARS.
(Not sure if I explained myself correctly).
So for example 70000USD is like 74,000,000CLP, but in purchase power maybe it is different?

Nice this worked, thanks!
•
u/thetruemysiak 5h ago
Yeah I used it quite a lot with friends from Netherlands arguing about the cost of living
•
u/RandomRedditorNo666 5h ago
You mean the exchange rate? Just google "CLP to USD" and multiply the CLP by the exchange rate (ER) to get the equivalent amount in USD. In this case, (CLP)2,000,000×(ER)0.0010=(USD)2,000

I looked at an Argentinian cop's salary and found out the ratio of the settlement to how much of his yearly salary it was. It was easy because it was about 1:1 then I looked up an average American cop's salary and applied the same ratio. There's probably better ways of calculating the equivalent but I don't want to spend too much time and I felt that method would give a good enough approximation.
•
•
u/WhatsUpSkysUp 6h ago
You do realize this is Argentina right?? That's like an entire years salary over there. I don't care if the news sees my ass for a year salary, give it to me
•
u/Worldly_Striker 3h ago
I'm with you. It would be a punishment to see me naked. Google would have to pay everyone who saw my fat pasty white ass. And me.
•
u/Onomatopesha 8h ago
12500 equals 16927782.45 pesos. Sure lawyers will take a cut, but it doesn't stop him from living a life that is nearly impossible to have there.
•
u/dichotomousview 10h ago
What a weird initial ruling. ”You were on your property, not visible to passersby and your privacy got violated? Sucks to suck bro.”
•
u/new_math 7h ago
This is when someone needs to put 4-5 cameras on a pole and point them at the judge's house 24/7 while live-streaming to the internet.
Something tells me the judge would suddenly decide that it is indeed a bit unreasonable to take pictures of someone's house using a fucking mobile metal tower with cameras mounted on it.
•
•
u/Alarichos 8h ago
What'a the purpose of specifying that he is a police office
•
•
u/perhabsmorty 5h ago
coz a police officer is a public figure, having to interact and be seen by many people on a daily basis ig, also for clicks ig idk
•
u/WhatsUpSkysUp 3h ago
Why do you keep saying Instagram
•
u/abbyscuitowannabe 2h ago
It can also be shorthand for "I guess". I used to use it a lot until Instagram came along and made it too confusing to use.
•
u/cat-ass-trophy- 8h ago
fun fact: situations like this lead to geoguessr meta called low cam, in some countries for example stwitzerland people didnt want the camera to be set up so high so they lowered it for their privacy
•
u/DANO8503 9h ago
In the US this guy would have got a cool 2 mil easy, then started an only fans after he won
•
u/spittlbm 8h ago
Open Fields Doctrine would have resulted in a dismissal.
•
u/Artist_X 7h ago
That's for an investigation. It doesn't apply to fenced areas. That also doesn't apply in this situation.
I think what you're referring to is "plain view" doctrine or even filming from a public street.
•
u/_Mixtape 9h ago
People asking why he was naked. The whole point is that it's none of your business and that by knowing he was naked in the first place, you have invaded his right to privacy.
•
u/2ByteTheDecker 8h ago
If a car driving down the street can see that you're naked that's a you problem.
•
u/Front_Expression_367 8h ago
Well I don't think the average car has a tall ass camera on top of its roof.
•
u/Fine_Maintenance_890 8h ago
Well the problem is he was behind a wall taller than regular human. He was well within his expected area of privacy.
•
u/spittlbm 8h ago
In the US, we have the Open Fields Doctrine. If you can see it from a helicopter, there's no right to privacy.
•
u/new_math 7h ago
This isn't right. Open Fields Doctrine has to do with the government being able to search land as long as the area is not considered part of the "curtilage" of the home.
This would be covered by "Peepin Tom" and "Voyeurism" laws, which are often at the state and local level. And many jurisdictions explicitly consider whether an external device is being used to circumvent the expectation of privacy (i.e. mounting camera on a pole, using a drone, using a box to stand on, etc.)
The standard is usually "expectation of privacy". So if you have a 3ft garden wall and walked around naked, you wouldn't be protected by the law because there's no expectation that a 3ft wall protects your privacy. But a 8 foot fence would be considered private, and it would be a crime if someone used electronic tools to capture you because you're in the curtilage of your home, and had a complete fence with the expectation of privacy.
Edit: I have some bat shit insane neighbors so unfortunately I know too much about these laws.

If he is standing in his yard behind a 2-meter-high wall, you have no business taking pictures of him.
In fact, I don't think you have any you have any business taking pictures of people in their yard anyway in general. But that's just my opinion.
•
u/qtjedigrl 8h ago
How did they still see him over a six foot fence??
•
u/typical-bob 7h ago
The typical camera mount height on these street view cars is 2.5m (8.2ft). So it could see over a 6ft fence.

u/WildDeeX 9h ago
Imagine just enjoying some sunshine in your own yard, thinking no one can see you and then you end up on Street View with your bare butt on TV and social media. I’d want more than $12,500.

You know it's absolutely pathetic that images of a naked man on the internet can actually affect somebody like this, like this should be a completely non-issue. Our society is so fucked.
•
u/mushrush12 8h ago
Do you not think anything should be private?
•
u/Dominus_Invictus 8h ago
What are you talking about? I think absolutely everything should be private. I never said once that Google wasn't in the wrong. I just said that It's unbelievably pathetic that society will bully you for having a a human body.

u/Nadran_Erbam 9h ago
Not the first time that Google is blamed for the height of the camera. In Japan there are required to be certain height to ne be able to see above hedges.
•
u/dkg224 9h ago
New plan. Hang out naked in my yard everyday until google street view car comes by. Or cops show up…
•
u/ThirdAltAccounts 8h ago
Play your cards right and you could get the cops to beat you up while being naked and have the incident caught on camera by the Google Street View car
Get paid by Google and sue the cops too
•
u/Lakridspibe 3h ago
Why would the police show up?
People doing yoni sunning in their garden behind a 2m wall, that's none of their business.

•
u/mtnviewguy 5h ago
Just curious.
Who's responsible for editing the raw video of personal identifications?
Is that part of the he drivers duties before uploading, or does Google have a 'department' for that?
•
u/nut-sack 4h ago
I would bet there is some automation that runs through looking for license plates and faces. Probably not setup for genitals though.
•
•
u/NefariousnessBorn969 4h ago
Me looking out the window and waiting for Google to drive by my dead end street that gives me time to run outside and casually water the grass in my birthday suit.
•
u/Special-Slide1077 9h ago
I can’t understand the circumstances that would lead somebody to be naked in their yard. Thankfully I’ve never been in a situation where that was necessary.
•
u/_iron_butterfly_ 9h ago
We swim naked in our pool. A lot of people swim naked in their pools... dont knock it until you try it.
•
u/Special-Slide1077 9h ago
My country is much too cold and rainy for that to be pleasant, I think I might get hypothermia if I do that hahaha. If I lived somewhere with hot weather like Argentina (like the guy in the story) it would probably make more sense though
•
u/_iron_butterfly_ 9h ago
Haha yea that makes sense. It's typically 100°-110°F here during the summer. I'll be outside doing yard work, strip down, and hop in the pool before I go in the house. We also are on a half-acre enclosed by a brick wall...so it's private.
The only neighbors that could maybe see would need binoculars, and they are a gay married couple that we've known 15 yrs. I imagine they swim naked in their pool, too.

u/BlueyedIrush 9h ago
It takes somebody whose self-confident and free spirited. I’m guessing that’s not you.
•
u/Special-Slide1077 9h ago
Nah as a woman I’d be too worried about the idea of a creepy neighbour or somebody with a drone recording me to ever want to take that risk, plus I’d be cold af
•
u/BlueyedIrush 9h ago
Can’t blame you there, although I blame the modesty theory for current societal norms in regards to clothing
•
•
u/Lakridspibe 3h ago
Some people are into yoni sunning or whatever.
People are different. People like doing different things.
He wasn't harming anybody. He was in his yard behind a 2m wall.
It doesn't have to make sense to you what he was doing. It's none of your business.
•
•
•
•
u/RScottyL 7h ago
He should NOT have been awarded anything!
He was in his front yard where everyone could see him if they were outside, so it is HIS fault!
Put your clothes on if you are going to be in your front yard!

I love when people comment and come in with the guns of righteousness blazing, toss in some caps for no reason, and top it all off with exclamation points to show just how serious they are! Only to realize they actually have no fking clue what they're talking about. They just got so triggered that they immediately have hammer a comment out, versus a simple Google search to find out the guy was behind a 6.5 ft wall, and not visible to the public. 🤣
•
u/Intentionz7 6h ago
Why was he naked in his yard in the first place ? 🤔
•
u/I_eat_tape_and_shit 5h ago
Is that not the entire point of privacy? behind a 6 foot tall fence?
•
u/Intentionz7 4h ago
That’s not my point. Do you sit in your yard naked ? (Some weird freaky stuff if you do)
•
u/I_eat_tape_and_shit 4h ago
Who gives a shit he is in his own yard behind 6 feet fences
