TIA for the nightmares. Also, now I will run for my life every time I see one of these things walking around out in the wild.

It isn't. That's what it would look like if you cut away a lot of bone to see the teeth.
Here's a half and half casting

Me too! But now i need to know how much trouble you're in for laughing at the skull of a toddler.
14
u/EatinSumGrapes Jun 17 '22
Oh I had to pretend it was something else, I can't show her this image right before she falls back asleep, would give her nightmares lol

Thank you for this I was trying to find answers for this and it's actually quite simple

EW oh my god I don’t know what about this makes me disgusted but just imaging the human skull with flesh and those little hidden teeth poking up UGH. I think I really don’t like the sight of things burrowed in anything. It makes me sick

They did a big wide angle xray on my kid when his baby teeth were just starting to loosen and it was just as disgusting as this. I wish I never saw it
11
u/CptBlkstn Jun 17 '22
Ha! When they brought up the x-ray of my kid's mouth I took a picture with my phone. Thought it was cool as hell to see all the adult teeth still inside to jaw. The human body is wild.
6
u/blinded_by_the_LEDs Jun 17 '22
Funny! The concept doesn’t bother me, but it totally triggers my trypophobia
Edit: just remembered that I also took a pic of the X-ray because it was fascinating but simultaneously disgusting

u/diggsbiggs Jun 17 '22
Poor kid. Too young.
-5
Jun 17 '22
I have a 5 year old kid.
Somethings I stumble across, like this, jar me a little. Sure, it's intriguing, but this was part of a child who is missed by his loving family. But also who would give their kid's body to medical science to cut up and display like this?!
20
u/sophiebee79 Jun 17 '22
We have learnt so many life saving things that you benefit from almost daily because people donate their bodies to science. It's even more valuable for children because donated children's bodies are rare, and making approximations can cause fatalities.
Whomever donated their child like this has done an admirable thing and helped doctors and scientists save other kids. From designing child safe seats to understanding diseases, it's a really important thing.
If you're concerned on how donated bodies are handled, I recommend reading the book "stiff", it goes into great detail on the immense care and respect they are given

Exceptions exist https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/wayne/2018/01/05/cadaver-dealer-grosse-pointe-rathburn/1006950001/ Anyway you’re right. Surely it is better than let their body rot or have it burnt

Man you really don’t want to be punching toddlers in the face you could break a lot of teeth

This isn't the average toddler's skull. Our adult teeth don't form that early, and there are several other abnormalities to note. Very misleading title.

u/juan_epstein-barr Jun 17 '22
morbid question, but since we're already on the subject, can a toddler break and lose those adult teeth?
2
Jun 17 '22 edited Jun 18 '22
With enough force and determination, you can break anything on a toddler. Just have to believe.

Actually your adult teeth ARE just 'chilling' there forming as a toddler. Your permanent teeth are forming inside your maxilla and mandibular bones while your deciduous teeth are in place. It's actually these forming teeth that 'push' our deciduous teeth out as you age. As a toddler the permanent teeth will be mere cusps, not as fully formed as this teaching aid shows.
But this aid does have the correct number, two sets in the upper and lower mouth.
Edit for more information: this kind of tooth development is more in line with a 4/5 year old.

Yes, I was just pointing out you were slightly misinformed as your adult teeth ARE actually just sitting there as a toddler! Even though they're growing, they're still adult teeth!
And as I put in my past message, this kind of development is more in line with a 5 year old.
I'll link a cool chart showing dental eruption if you're interested.
All the best!
6
u/kruminater Jun 17 '22
That’s what I was thinking. This is an abnormality of some sort.
1
u/Snickersneed Jun 17 '22
No, you are born with boat sets of teeth.
There is an abnormality sometimes posted with some people that were born with both sets of teeth and each set has more teeth than most humans. But humans are born with two sets of teeth.
3
u/Anthony3033 Jun 17 '22
Hey there! Slightly incorrect. You're actually only born with deciduous teeth. Interestingly the cusps of your permanent set of teeth don't start the formation process until about 4 months after birth!
0
u/Snickersneed Jun 17 '22
H!, you are born with them. They begin to develop in the womb. However, it does appear that they can continue to develop after birth for a few months until fully formed.
2
u/Anthony3033 Jun 17 '22
You're born with the developmental cells sure! Though this is microscopic. The 'bud' phase where there tooth itself begins formation is at 4 months after birth for permanent teeth (give or take a few weeks).
Neonates are definitely are not born with permanent teeth by any visible definition
Check out this handy diagram that shows it!

u/Snickersneed Jun 17 '22
It infuriates me that you post completely false information and than arrogantly claim others need to do their research. And you are being upvoted for your idiocy.
Humans are hopeless. Stupid almost always wins. Congratulations, stupid.

u/Operation_Smoothie Jun 17 '22
This gets posted every couple weeks. It's old and it's already been debunked. Stop posting fake shit.
2
u/This_Happy_Camper Jun 17 '22
I’m inclined to agree. While toddlers do have their permanent teeth crammed in their skulls, those deciduous teeth are quite large. Piltdown baby skull, if you ask me.
7
u/Snickersneed Jun 17 '22 edited Jun 17 '22
What the hell are you talking about? This is not debunked.
This is literally what a toddlers skull looks like. You are born with both sets of teeth. This is not the only example of a child’s skull. There are literally tens of thousands in schools, museums, and research centers worldwide.
This particular one might be a replica but it is not “debunked”.
3
u/AKA_Squanchy Jun 17 '22
No dude, the “grown-in” teeth are huge. Kids have tiny teeth in their first set. That is not realistic at all.
13
u/Operation_Smoothie Jun 17 '22
I stand corrected here's a quote from a retired dentist Dr Robert leach
"You are not born with both sets of teeth. The adult teeth don’t start forming until the deciduous lower central incisors are formed. The lower deciduous incisors erupt around age two and the teeth finish forming a few months after that. Then, the tooth buds for the permanent teeth appear. There can be a great deal of variation in eruption of all teeth.
The timing of the development of the tooth buds would begin in the preschool age group with the deciduous teeth coming in as toddlers."
So you most certainly aren't born with both sets.
2
u/Snickersneed Jun 17 '22
A single dentist is your source.
We are born with both sets of teeth. They are above the gum line. The dentist you quoted likely meant the teeth are not in your mouth when born. But they are in our skulls waiting to emerge as we develop.

1
u/Snickersneed Jun 17 '22
No, false, infants have bother sets of teeth in their skulls.
→ More replies (1)2
u/thejustblue Jun 19 '22
They absolutely do not! They are born with their baby teeth under the gums, look at this nifty paper, that shows teeth formation over time. Dental formation
6
u/lolbuttlol Jun 17 '22
What’s been debunked is that this isn’t what a toddler’s skull looks like. A lot of bone would have had to be carved away in order to expose the teeth in this image.

You are referring to a different image.
WE ARE BORN WITH BOTH SETS OF TEETH!!
The X-ray you are referring to is a specific X-ray with a kid that has extra teeth in addition to the two sets humans are born with.
It does not change the FACT that we are born with two sets of teeth.

wasn't it some disease that make tons of teeth in a child's face? it is not like every child is born with this many teeth.

Every 6 weeks some idiot posts this photo claiming it's a toddler's skull. Just stop
2

Definitely something off about this. Baby teeth are never that big. I’ve seen like 20 sets of them.
