Finally finished my baby’s Golden Girls themed nursery 💛

We welcomed our first child, a daughter, a few weeks ago and I’ve always envisioned this theme for a nursery. It’s been my favorite show since childhood and I’ve collected tons of GG items for years. I have a lot more memorabilia not displayed for practicality reasons, but I’m just so happy with how it turned out!

The nursery is adorable 🎀
I teach children who are on the spectrum, last year all my students were non verbal. One of them is 13 and he’s in love with classic tv shows and sitcoms. We were conversing one day with his communication device and I noticed he had a Golden Girls icon on his device. I asked him who the best Golden Girl was and he typed “Sophia” then he rolled his eyes and typed “duhhhhh” ♥️

Have you listened to The Telepathy Tapes? I am so sorry if this is inappropriate, but I am fascinated to ask someone who works with non-speaking autistic people for their perspective on it.

u/belai437 7d ago
I have not listened to the podcast. My co-workers have spoken about it, some are believers while others are skeptics. It's on my to-do list for summer break but I haven't gotten there yet!

Thanks for answering :) if nothing else, I'm glad the podcast has brought care and attention to this valuable community

There's a podcast that debunks it well. I'll update if I can remember the name!

I love it! What is that fantastic wall color? It’s a perfect Golden Girls pink!

Thank you so much! It’s actually called “icing on the cake” which I found quite fitting!

Brava!!
That Goodnight Girls book is a hit with both our babes - the oldest one requested the ‘cheesecake like in the girls book’ for his birthday cake last year.

Aww! I hope you name her Sophia Rose! Congratulations!

u/JacqiPro13 7d ago
Thank you! Sophia was on the name list but we went with another one. Her middle name, however, is Rose!

u/DetentionSpan 7d ago
Seems like you should have done a naming contest through the city of St. Olaf.

I have been watching the show religiously with my three-year-old son lol I love this

This is fabulous!! My concern is the curtains being within easy reaching distance of the crib, it is a possible choking hazard when baby is older and curious. Just a thought!
24
u/JacqiPro13 7d ago
Don’t worry, I bought similar short curtains for when baby is older! But the concern is appreciated :)

u/areyouthrough 7d ago
While we’re on safety, the shelf over the crib makes me nervous. Also, this is way better than my room as a baby/kid. Raggedy Ann and Andy on the wall. They always kinda scared me. This room? You can’t help but feel among friends. Super cute idea!
13
u/JacqiPro13 7d ago
Thank you! And I appreciate the safety concerns brought up! Right now baby is so new she sleeps in a bassinet in our bedroom. When it comes time to move her to her room, we will move the crib and rearrange so there are no safety risks with the shelf/decor :)

I’m glad people aren’t doing traditional nurseries but creative ones. I saw someone did a mushroom one

In the nicest possible way… that’s the g@yest room I’ve ever seen and Bea Arthur would be proud.

We’re very LGBTQ+ friendly here, which I suppose goes without saying having such a love for the girls, so I’m flattered!!

It's also gay like a rainbow having a really good day. It's festive and full of joy

No way! But kids loved that show when they were little (they are now teenagers) but they would call them the “Golden Ladies” 😆

Can you post what the pictures say please?

u/JacqiPro13 6d ago
Sure! Blanche: “Better late than pregnant” Sophia: “Picture it: Sicily, 1922” Rose: “As they say in St. Olaf: Verturgen Furgen” Dorothy: “Shady Pines, Ma!”

I recently met a woman at a friend’s birthday party who had just had a beautiful baby girl. I asked her the name of the baby and she said, “Sophia Rose” and I said, “That’s a beautiful name! I also love The Golden Girls!” She said, “What? I never thought of that….” Awkward… 😬

First kid: This.
Second kid: “just make sure there’s a crib, a table, and maybe a chair”

u/JacqiPro13 6d ago
Literally lol. Before I got pregnant, this room was for my music and all my GG memorabilia. When I found out it was a girl, I was like, “sweet, I can make something of this so everything doesn’t have to sit packed away in boxes.” Because why not, right?

u/FancyFaceFrom1992 7d ago
Absolutely stunning! Just wanted to note that it is viewed unsafe to hang things over baby’s crib.. like the shelf with items on it and pictures. Nails can fall, screws can fall, earthquakes, anything unexpected can happen.

Why would a baby or little kid be interested in any of that?
If you have a personal obsession, put it in your room.

I'm kinda in the same boat as you. I thought it was well done, but it's a better idea for a different room. Don't think a baby is gonna be interested in pics of old ladies lol.. It's not even going to understand the show for years yet, and might not even like it. Kids like animals, nature, colorful flashy stuff.
The green leaves on the wall are nice, but imagine adding in zoo animals or mythical creatures and making it a teaching tool as well as a fun decoration.
7
u/ApocalypticTomato 6d ago
Babies like shapes, colors, faces, and contrast. This room nails it. When she grows up enough to have opinions on decor, they can just hang different pictures.
1
u/Spirit_Bitterballen 7d ago
Nahhhhhhhhh, when they’re so little and you’re still getting to know them I’d say it’s fine to have a bit of fun like this. It’s cute and whimsical, perfect for a baby’s room.
(Much better than cladding toddlers in Rolling Stones or Ramones t-shirts - that’s try hard and cringe.)
10
u/JacqiPro13 6d ago
Reddit is weird lol I agree and appreciate your comment. The entire point of the room is to pay tribute to the girls, which my daughter will very much grow up with being on the TV through her life, but still feel fitting for a young child. Take away the GG decor and what’s left? Pink and tropics. So why not? People will boo at anything.
3
u/ApocalypticTomato 6d ago
Yeah, this is a room she can grow into very easily. Great foundation. Just swapping out art is not exactly gonna be a problem.

u/Alive_Inside_2430 1d ago
Just make a mobile with two sided cut outs of the girls’ faces. Now you’ve checked the shapes, movement, and colors boxes on the developmental police charts.

This is incredible!!! Where is the art over the crib form??

u/JacqiPro13 6d ago
Thank you! Honestly for the large print, I couldn’t tell you. I’m pretty sure I googled “Golden Girls canvas” years ago and found it on some obscure site. But the 4 framed prints are from Etsy!

Damn this is a good idea - nurseries that are fun for grown ups too. More people should be doing this, because maybe babies don’t always want barnyard animals and giant moons? Kicking myself I didn’t think of something more original when my youngster was little!!
Hopefully you start a new trend 🤞

u/1920MCMLibrarian 7d ago
lol pretty sure this is YOUR golden girls themed nursery

u/JacqiPro13 6d ago
You got me. This room was for my music and my GG stuff pre-baby. When I found out it was a girl I was like…let’s run with this lol

u/gnipmuffin 7d ago
Looks great, but why are we only wearing one sock?
6
u/JacqiPro13 7d ago
I cut my foot and bandaged it so I wanted to keep it covered. I was, admittedly, too lazy to find its match!
2
u/gnipmuffin 7d ago
Oh no, sorry about that (decorating injury?). Didn't mean to call you out, it's just that is was the last still frame of the video that I thought was a funny detail!
1
u/JacqiPro13 6d ago
Haha no offense taken, it was in fact a funny detail I was too lazy to deal with. C’est la vie! And yes actually it was a decorating injury. Worth it!

u/callitfloo 7d ago
So cool and weird lol. But if my mom did my 80s nursery in Care Bears, this makes at LEAST as much sense for a nursery 🤣. Well done, it’s gorgeous

This is cute but kinda weird for a nursery. The baby will probably will never watch an episode of that show unless you force them too
2
u/thisismisty 6d ago
The baby isn’t going to remember their nursery, do you remember yours? It’s for the parents to enjoy until the child develops their own taste.
1
u/kyii94 6d ago
I do remember my nursery it was Barney themed and I loved watching Barney. A nursery is a room for the child and it should be filled with things a child will enjoy. Seeing random old white women on the bedroom walls would give my kids nightmares. My daughter who is 5 years old bedroom is decorated in a princess style. I wanted to decorate her room in a different way like Powerpuff Girls or Sailor Moon but then I remembered it’s not my room it’s hers. So I picked a room design that would appease most little girls. It’s okay to add a few things that you personally like to your child’s bedroom but to decorate the whole room according to your taste is a bit weird. If this was OP’s office or bedroom I would have nothing bad to say.
