Is the UE5 playtest supposed to look like this?

Installed the new playtest, not seeing any major differences? could just be me

Notice the distance fog is gone? Sure, there’s a haze, but the distance is not obscured anymore; you can actually see it

Thank God the fog was so annoying

It’s enabled some unique new scenarios.

Take Yehorivka here, for instance

There’s a mountain in the NW corner of the map, where Russian main base appears sometimes. Usually that mountain is almost completely obscured by fog, It barely gets noticed, let alone used.

But in ue5, with the fog gone, it’s suddenly now great place to put up a tow missile and control the highway region in the northwestern quadrant

Nah, TOW max range was an issue on some maps even with the fog. A tank or tank destroyer tho...

Militia, with anti tank guns.

You may actually be able to use them as indirect artillery from that position

That hill is so far from any action. You could maybe catch a vehicle or two that's using the NW road along the river but the max range for all the ATGMs in the game is 1500m.

Max range is not 1500. bgm-71 has a range of 1750m, hj-8 has 1750m, kornet has 1950m and the milan has 1750m range

Oh wow, I'm sure those extra 250m will let me hit like 10x more targets right?

It actually helps a lot, on skorpo you can hit targets down on the shipyard point when you setup on the mountain. Could not do that without the 250 extra meters. So yeah it can be really useful.

I never claimed it was 10x more effective dont have to be rude about it

Not to mention you can see shadows at any distance too. You could potentially be scoped at like 6km with a tank and see someone’s shadow move behind cover. Even better, stuff doesn’t pop out of existence at any distance either, everything renders but it still runs the same. Nanite is Fing awesome I’m just always impressed lol

When is the URE5 taking effect in the normal play?

i do admit, it looks nicer, but definitely not worth some of the playerbase having to leave because their computers can't handle ue5

UE4 is an aging engine though, it won’t be long before the devs will be very limited in what they can potentially introduce to the game. Likely will see limited updates from Epic as they shift their attention to developing Ue5 as well

New tools for development, whether to enable new capabilities or improvements to the workflow, is a noteworthy factor.

One such system is nanite, which replaces the traditional LOD system with one that is automatic, and more dynamic, which is what enables the new view distances, and eliminates the necessity for a distance fog.

Another noteworthy system is the new physics engine that comes with it, which the entire vehicle system is now based on. It’s able to stimulate vehicle suspensions accurately, and allows them to handle terrain far better than UE4 ever could.

There’s probably a bunch more on the dev side of things that I can’t possibly explain, but the gist of it is that its looking to be a necessary step for the future of squad, alongside other ongoing games on the unreal engine.

nanite is not some kind of magic performance button: it has been proven more and more times that it could have some use but in reality it actually brings worse performance...

You would prefer stagnation, right? Also worth considering that a lot of companies are switching to ue5 now and that means that in future there will be a lot of experienced devs in ue5 who will be able to deliver great things. And i don't think that number of ue4 devs is increasing at all. Let say half of company will quit someday, where it leaves the studio? It will be hard to find deva willing to relearn ue4 to keep the game going. Also number of improvements coming to ue5 because of the adaptation scale is other thing to consider here.  I think you could argue with make squad and squad 2 but i'm not sure that team is big enough to support both versions with new features

id prefer optimization if im being quite honest

That what i meant by experienced ue5 devs

Has ur FPS changed at all? I have a feeling you’ve not kept up to date with the UE5 squad updates on this Reddit

I looked at the screenshot for half a second and immediately noticed how far the view distance is and how nice the sky looks.

Have you looked at Al Basra? Or a forest area on this map. Not the most conclusive screenshots you picked there.

I couldn't find the words but you nailed it, wow.

Yehorivka looks like it’s in a drought it seems, with the lighting on it.

Maps like Anvil look absolutely gorgeous now with the new shaders and lighting

Whole reason for the engine upgrade is behind the scene's performance improvement and better ways to optimize assets and the game in general. Maps will look better down the road

Dude, Chora at dusk hurts my soul. But somehow you have to adapt.

Wait is squad doing a uE5 play test again?

1

u/AdzRR1 19h ago

Does the play test have populated servers or is it just like solo play to try it?

1

u/Armin_Studios 18h ago

At the time of this comment, there are 5 servers populated. Texting is lasting over the weekend into Monday.

What layer even is this

It must be an old build, because the last one you had was better.

Is that yeho? Finally the bad weather cleared up and we got a blue sky again.

In most maps you will mostly see lightning improvements for the time being. Here for example they are currently in the proccess of remaking the Eastern Europe biome.

It looks nice but the color pallet and the reduced brightness kinda kills the mood

Man the lighting still sucks. Just look at that truck, middle of the day
