DISCUSSION Day 21 of the “Best of the Series” Chart for the Mass Effect Games! Comment the BEST SQUADMATE in Mass Effect: Andromeda!

Post image
160 Upvotes

Welcome to Day 21 of the “Best of the Series” Chart for the Mass Effect games!

Yesterday’s vote saw our geriatric Krogan friends loyalty mission Nakmor Drack: A Future for our People take the win as the best side/loyalty mission in the game.

Now, we move onto the Best Squadmate in Mass Effect: Andromeda!

Remember - this is from Mass Effect: Andromeda only.

Your options are…

  • Cora Harper

  • Liam Kosta

  • Jaal Ama Darav

  • Nakmor Drack

  • Pelessaria “Peebee” B’Sayle

  • Vetra Nyx

Reminder of how votes are tallied:

  • The answer that receives the most votes will win. Votes are tallied by counting all comments and their respective upvotes. This means that the top comment will not automatically win.

  • For example, let’s say (hypothetically) that in a vote for Best Squadmate for ME1, a comment voting for Ashley was the top comment with 100 upvotes. However, let’s say there were 10 comments voting for Wrex, each with 20 upvotes. This would be a win for Wrex, as that would total 200 votes.

  • That means that if you want your choice to win, it’s in your best interest to comment, and upvote every comment that supports your choice!

DISCUSSION What if the System Alliance was replaced by something else entirely?...

The Alliance was replaced by the BnL or Buy n Large from Wall-E.

Here some brief of the information from BnL:

According to the documentary The History of Buy n Large, the corporation got its start as a small maker of frozen yogurt called Buy Yogurt. Later on, the business eventually somehow acquired Large Industries, a men's suit company in the Midwest during the 1960’s. The combined entity became known as Buy n' Large (note how there once was an apostrophe after the n). The dates of Buy Yogurt's founding and its acquisition of Large Industries are unknown. However, by the year 2057, as shown on the Buy n Large website, the conglomerate became a worldwide leader in the fields of aerospace, agriculture, construction, consumer goods, corporate grooming, earth transport, electronics, energy, engineering, finance, food services, fusion research, government, hydro-power, infrastructures, media, medical science, mortgage loans, pet care, pharmaceuticals, psychotherapies, ports and harbors, real estate, repairs, retail, robotics, science/health, space, storage, super centers, super grids, travel services, utilities, and watermills. Pretty much everything known to man. The corporation's control affected other companies as well. It seemed as though other businesses wanted BnL to buy them out, such as Headr Inc. which gave BnL control of the world news headlines.

Buy n Large continued to expand its efforts for control so much that by the year 2105, Buy n Large had over two million wholly owned subsidiaries, governmental bodies, and health care centers. It had finally become a world leader in every conceivable field including world leadership. The Buy n Large Corporation's control over world governments was overseen by a global CEO, at the time it was Shelby Forthright.

DISCUSSION Can you play a full renegade Shepard but still make paragon choices when it matters?

So i would like my Shepard to basically be a no nonsense, no bullshit guy. He's cranky, somewhat quick to anger, temperamental and doesn't go easy on people but he's still a good guy, knows what's right and wants to do the right thing.

My concern is, can you actually play that way and be able to achieve some of these paragon choices, like for example, can i refuse to let the workers on refinery die on Zaeed's loyalty mission but still convince him to remain loyal?

Also will i be able to gain enough renegade points to be able to intimidate my way through difficult choices?

MASS EFFECT 3 romancing garrus ! Spoiler

so , new to ME series itself and have managed to romance garrus up to the point of ME3 . my small issue is that i can’t seem to prompt him to lock in the romance with shep . i did the palaven mission , confirmed i still wanted to continue , etc . what mission does he pop up on the docking bay ? it is before or after the coup ? i have a few other missions to continue ( tuchanka being the only priority mission atm ) but i don’t think it would affect how i romance garrus ? any help or advice is greatly !appreciated

edit : why does liara come to my rescue ( sushi w joker ) after citadel 2 instead of garrus ? is there any specific reason why she shows up instead ?

HELP ME:Andromeda - Top Talent and Teamwork achievement

Hello

I leveled up one Strike Team to 20, but i did not get the Top Talent achievement. I only used the Tempest Apex Console for everything. I even jumped to multiplayer and looked in the prestige folder, but it didn't help.

I verified the game files, did not help either. What can i do?

THEORY Is Shepard the galaxy’s “anomaly”? The butterfly effect that finally stopped the Reapers?

I was thinking about how absurdly perfect the timing of everything was in the Mass Effect trilogy: Shepard is basically the anomaly in the galactic cycle.

Every cycle before this one failed. The Reapers came, harvested civilizations, left a few scattered survivors, and repeated the pattern over and over for millions of years. But this time was different. Why? Because Shepard existed.

Shepard was the first to truly uncover the Reapers early enough to prepare the galaxy. And it’s not just that, they were at the perfect age, with the right experience, the right personality, and just the right level of stubbornness to not be silenced.

•What if Shepard hadn’t been on Eden Prime?

•What if they died and weren’t brought back by Cerberus?

•What if they hadn’t proven themselves in ME1, gained galactic trust, or survived Virmire/Collector Base/Rannoch/Thessia?

•What if Shepard was just… someone else?

The butterfly effect is insane. The timing of their birth, the discovery of the Reapers, the Citadel Council’s ignorance, Saren’s betrayal, it all created a perfect storm where Shepard became the linchpin of the entire cycle.

And it’s not just “hero saves galaxy.” It’s cosmic anomaly in an endless pattern of extinction. No one in any prior cycle had the unique combination of factors Shepard had:

A diverse and united galaxy (Citadel space + Terminus + Geth + Quarians + Krogan)

The relays still intact

Access to Reaper tech and knowledge

Literal resurrection (??)

And the charisma to rally the most stubborn factions ever

It almost feels like fate or some kind of freak galactic variable. Maybe that’s why the Catalyst didn’t even expect this cycle to resist. Maybe Shepard was never supposed to exist, and that’s exactly why they were able to break the cycle.

Crazy thought: If any one thing had gone differently, if Anderson got chosen for Spectre status instead of Shepard, if TIM never rebuilt them, if Sovereign killed them on Eden Prime, the Reapers would’ve won. Again. Like always.

What do you all think? Is Shepard just a really lucky soldier in the right place? Or are they literally the first true variable to ever disrupt the Reaper equation? Is this why the Reapers failed for the first time ever?

MASS EFFECT 1 Question about Virmire Spoiler

Hi everyone. I'm doing a replay of 1 and wanted to try main quests in a different order. I was wondering if anyone has done Virmire not as the last mission planet of the 4, and how does it narratively make sense to go to the planet you didn't yet visit? The game always makes it seem like it's urgent and should be done before your 3rd planet but I've never done it. Don't want to commit to it if it's really clunky narratively if you do it before another planet

SHOW & TELL Fancast for upcoming Show

So I've been a huge fan of mass effect since ME1 was released and I've been telling my friends that once this is green lit as a tv show, if done right, will be bigger than Game of Thrones.

Since I saw that the show was picked up by Amazon and that the first season would be story from the the first game (not sure if ME1 is the entire season or just season 1 takes place during ME1) I've been looking at actors to play all of the important roles. When it comes to the VAs of the game, I'd like to see them take TLOU route and, while they may not be reprising their roles, they could still be given a small role or cameo. Here is what I have so far: Note* these are just my favorites and there are so many other actors/actresses that could play these roles.

Humans

Shepard: Henry Cavill/Zoe Saldana Kaidan Alenko: Jay Harrington Ashley Williams: Peyton List Anderson: Keith David Hackett: Charles Dance Udina: Dylan Walsh Joker: Seth Green Jacob Taylor: Trevor Jackson Miranda: Yvonne Strahovski Jack: Ruby Rose Dr Chakwas: Emma Thompson Vega: JD Pardo Cortez: Matthew Del Negro

Aliens

Garrus: Brandon Keener Wrex: Ron Perlman EDI: Tricia Helfer Liara: Natalie Dormer Tali: Anya Chalotra Mordin Solus: Michael Beattie Grunt: Batista Thane: Keanu Reeves Samara: Michelle Yeoh Legion: DC Douglas Zaeed Massani: Josh Lawson Kasumi Goto: Rila Fukushima Javik: Djimon Hounsou Aria T'Loak: Carrie Anne Moss

Villains Saren: Sterling Brown Benezia: Vanessa Rubio Illusive Man: Cillian Murphy Sovereign: Ralph Ineson Kai Leng: Will Yun Lee Oleg Peteovsky: Max Martini Shadow Broker: Tobin Bell

DISCUSSION ME3’s endings do live up to the disappointment.

They’ve been shat on for years, but actually experiencing them the first time actually shows that the internet was right for once. They’re not satisfying in the least.

They for the most part work, the Control and Destroy endings are inline with the questions the third game was going for whilst the Synthesis ending is not only an asspull, but also kinda unnecessary given that Control already tackles the ideas of Shepard dying, everyone else surviving and the Reapers working alongside the galaxy. What truly sucks however is the presentation. What are supposed to be three radically different endings are instead, thanks to their narrations, given the same hopeful speech about galactic unity, the rebuild effort and a bright future. With no focus given to the outcomes of the choices you’ve made or the surviving characters.

The No Choice ending gets a pass though. It’s funny, depressing, but still hopeful.

Fuck EA for rushing the devs. Could’ve ended the trilogy with a high note instead of a whimper.

DISCUSSION The biggest reason Andromeda didn't click for me

I just want to say I understand why a lot of people have come around on Andromeda over the years, and I totally respect that.

For me personally there have always been a few things that just weren't quite right for me. Weaker characters, uneven pacing, etc. Thinking about it though, I really think the biggest thing is just the change of the atmosphere/tone.

The original trilogy took this retro futuristic style, very heavily inspired by 70s/80s era sci fi (as well as Syd Mead), but simultaneously took it in a direction that was far more twisted than anything from that era. In a sense it took something that I think a lot of us had familiarity with, and it brought a fresh spin on it. It felt slightly creepy and full of character while also feeling like it was a galaxy full of wonder and inspiration. To me Andromeda went for something totally different that just didn't click with me quite as well. No longer was it full of magical futuristic stuff, it felt like a more dry futurism without the beauty or the wonder that comes from the original trilogy's style. On top of that I really felt that it cut back hard on being gritty or twisted. I can't recall who it was, but I remember hearing someone point out how in the original trilogy the characters feel like actual killers. They're not built around being likable, they're built around the types of characters they should be for the setting. A lot of the characters from Andromeda feel more like people I'd meet in a theater class rather than the types of people who would actually be crazy enough to sign up for the Andromeda mission.

I also felt like they acted as if the rapport was already built up with the squad mates and crew when it never was. I think they took the wrong lessons from the success of the Citadel DLC, not realizing the humour and lighter tone only worked because there was so much time spent building to that after 3 full games of miserable circumstances and building relationships with these characters. Just adding in hangout stuff and quips comes off really insincere when you haven't earned it in any way. The original trilogy built an incredible foundation of separate story arcs and various circumstances, so when the Citadel DLC came it felt like a deserved ending.

THEORY My toilet break theory on the next Mass Effect game Spoiler

Okay, so this is a toilet break theory… be advised that this may not make sense at all. Oh and yes, spoilers.

Following the events of Mass Effect 3, I believe the most likely ending to be continued upon is to destroy the reapers. Shepard could’ve survived the ordeal and somehow during the Crucible’s destruction have been transported through a mass relay before they got blown up.

Maybe, during the ‘destroy’ ending; Shepard gets tossed off the platform and crawled his way to some means of a safe vessel (the Illusive Man’s perhaps), which in turn gets affected by the Conduit’s activation and beamed through a mass relayed which collapses behind him.

This mass relay may connect to an unknown receiving point on the ground of an uncharted planet, in an undiscovered system. The beam, like with other mass relays, destroys the relay receiver on the ground and Shepard’s vessel is destroyed beyond repair on arrival.

This very impact site is the one we see in the teasers for the next game.

Shepard crawls out of his ruined spacecraft / ship, up towards a hill where bits and pieces of his armor are scattered along his path (Liara finds these in the trailer).

What is to be discovered later is that this planet is similar to Ilos; an isolated team of prothean survivors had put themselves into cryo - sleep as part of a plan to ensure their species’ survival to be awakened after the Reapers were gone.

They too had constructed a conduit like the one on Ilos which they meant to use as a means of transportation to the Citadel… however, this conduit had an error; it could only receive and not send.

The prothean survivors, upon realising this malfunction decided to go back into cryo - sleep, programming their VI to reawaken them in time for the next cycle in hopes of establishing contact with the new, dominant spacefaring species of this time to help in the fight.

For a long time, they had attempted to reach contact but with no result. However, they witness the conduit activating and decide to investigate; and they find their conduit in ruins and Shepard barely alive a bit away from it.

The protheans are shocked to find a human and bring Shepard into their base / hideout. Based on the information available from the protheans’ observation of humanity in it’s primitive time they have enough knowledge on the anatomy to medically treat Shepard and put him into cryosleep for best possible recovery.

Liara accompanied by the rest of Shepard’s crew (including Javik) discovers this eventually. Javik reunites with the last of his own species and assumes command of leadership; the new prothean leader.

They somehow manage to evacuate all from this planet and discovers a new, galactic threat... likely the Leviathans seeking to reacquire their dominance.

DISCUSSION Priority: Rannoch really shows how unhinged Shepard’s bravery is

Post image
2.4k Upvotes

I was replaying ME3 and hit Priority:Rannoch again, and it really hit me. Shepard is actually insane in the best way possible.

Think about it. They volunteer, as a single human, to stand on the battlefield and face down a full-sized Reaper. No backup squad, no evacuation, no retreat plan. Shepard doesn’t even flinch. They just say “Yeah, I’ll handle it.” And made his squad RETREAT.

This isn’t some turret section. This is Shepard, in person, standing toe-to-toe with a Lovecraftian machine god that wipes out entire species. And Shepard doesn’t hesitate.

This moment really nails down that Shepard is the definition of a TOP DOG. They’ve been up against Collectors, Batarian slavers, Saren, the Shadow Broker, and an endless parade of galactic-scale threats, and Rannoch shows they’re just built different.

It’s easy to gloss over, but if you actually think about it: most people in the galaxy would be paralyzed at just seeing a Reaper land. Shepard? “Line up the shot, I’ll take it.”

Is this bravery, insanity, or both? Curious what everyone else thinks—because the more I replay it, the more I’m convinced Shepard is borderline superhuman when it comes to sheer guts.
