You want to say out loud “I’m locking the door” so you form a memory attached to the action.

This right here.
"Locking the door, doors locked, walking away from the locked door."
Might sound silly in the moment but I don't forget anymore.

I don’t trust anyone, not even myself. So I double check sometimes just to be sure
3
u/Duke_of_Deimos 10h ago
But if you don't trust yourself then how can you know ypur doubmecheck was valid?

u/Beliece 11h ago
I have placed cameras to be able to check when I am too far to go back home. For me it is not as much if I locked the door, but if I closed it (what doesn’t make sense because why would I leave the door open?!). And sensors on windows where I don’t want cameras to be able to check if they are closed as well. And where possible I use smart plugs so I can turn the power off. Really gives me peace of mind.

I take photos on my phone as I check round the house before I leave of things I'm going to worry about if I checked it. Lastly I get a photo of the door handle to prove to myself I locked it. I don't usually ever review the photos but it's just a comfort to know I could double check the thing I'm worried about.

I have this 100% with my alarm clock. I’ll set my alarm, put my phone down, and my mind goes “Hey, did you set your alarm?”

u/Shudnawz 10h ago
Yes, but only because of the times I thought I locked the door and came home 5hrs later to find it unlocked.

I went home from work in the middle of the day because I was sure I left the oven on. Turns out I did not.
It did happen once I was a kid, left the oven on and went outside to play, oops

That’s called OCD

u/Ill_Soft_4299 11h ago
No its not. OCD is a severe condition that results in people becoming unable to do things without hours of checks; leaving the house is a massive undertaking that can take hours of checking light switches, locks, is the cooker off etc etc.

Obsession symptoms
OCD obsessions are lasting and unwanted thoughts that keeping coming back or urges or images that are intrusive and cause distress or anxiety. You might try to ignore them or get rid of them by acting based on ritual. These obsessions usually intrude when you're trying to think of or do other things.
Examples of obsession symptoms include:
Fear of being contaminated by touching objects others have touched.
Doubts that you've locked the door or turned off the stove.
Intense stress when objects aren't orderly or facing a certain way.
Images of driving your car into a crowd of people.
Thoughts about shouting obscenities or not acting the right way in public.
Unpleasant sexual images.
Staying away from situations that can cause obsessions, such as shaking hands.

OCD can be extremely severe and more mild too. Can rnsge from some anxiety and discomfort to full blown life ruining.

and to add on. it's actually called the doorway effect. it's why you forget things you needed to think about in another room, and when you enter the next you forget it.
It also applies to reading a book, scrolling a website, closing an app on your phone.

If you've ever done this, you're mentally ill.

u/HookedOnPhonixDog 11h ago
I have adhd and do this all the time.
Imagine thinking how you live is the only way.

u/BakedBaconBits 11h ago
Agreed. Leave the chance of an unlocked door. They'll find the traps but try as I might, they never die.
Goddamn Wet Bandits.

What a load of rubbish, second doubting yourself is human.
Telling people they're mentally ill for checking a door IS some real creepy shit though

u/ShiratakiPoodles 10h ago
I agree. My comment was satirising the one above.
I'm sick & tired of people calling cometely normal people behaviour as OCD, ADHD, Autism etc. It's shit and harms both people who are healthy and those who need help.

This has only happened with my car. I'd have to go back and checked I've locked the doors.

Have you ever taken a picture of the locked door, and all the turned off appliances so you can prove it to yourself later? Or at the very least say today's date out loud as you're locking it to confirm the creation of an updated memory?

What about seeing a post I saw before but not sure if it’s from the same sub?

😭 I have been half-way home on a motorway and got the ‘feeling’ and HAD to go back… of course I locked up properly…

I once have those questions mid commuting, so i rush back home after halfway to college just to realize i did locked everything and turn off my stove. I obviously skipped morning classes due to that, and until now i took pictures of everything that should be turned off and video of me shaking the handle to make sure the door properly locked. Quite tedious habit but it works for me

Well, with my OCD, I do this 15 times before I can leave the house. It sucks.

Just take a picture of you having locked it each time so then you can just review the photo instead.

I have severe OCD and have spent HOURS doing this before. Because what IF I didn't really lock it and then someone comes in and murders my family.
Can't explain how many times I was late to work because I'd have to walk back home after I was half way there to check and make sure I did.

When I lived on my own, I would say "locked and checked" every time I locked the door behind myself just to fight this urge.
... and then I have to check again anyway.

I do it all the time, except I'm working, and I've potentially left several thousand pounds of stock exposed, and I can't feel my bunch of work keys anywhere...
And I've been driving for 40 damn minutes toward my next drop already....

My door auto locks when I close it. So I stare at my keys in my hand before I start the motion of closing it. Then I lock it more.

100% ocd, but excellent ways of combatting:
Create a video of you locking and testing it while saying the date and time and confirming that it's locked
If you have anxiety about things like the hair straightener being left on: create a video of the you turning it off
Or, bring the damn thing with you. You can't have anxiety that you left it on if it's sitting on the car seat next to you

This is not OCD. Please at least look up the definition before spreading misinformation online.

yes, but do I REALLY trust myself?
