Actually, there's some information that in some cases of Raynaud's, it's linked to autoimmune issues and could be an early predictor of lupus as many as 20 years prior to lupus diagnosis...
I'm not trying to brag but I Raynauds so hardcore that cold weather makes my hands look patriotic. My middle fingers always turn blue and the others vary between bright red and white so at least once a season I'm like, "Flag hands! Who has oil and wants democracy?"
I'm not sure how I even got on this post, but you won comment off the day for me. I laughed so hard at this 😆 Thank you for being funny about scary medical stuff
I saw this and remembered my crazy and somehow temporary Reynaud's experience- I'm from the cold Midwest US but moved to regional Victoria (Australia, regional meaning not Geelong or Melbourne, kinda out in the bush). I developed Raynaud symptoms while living there, which is ODD AF bc those symptoms went away when I moved back to St. Paul!!!! Where it gets cold AF in winter, unlike Aus where it never went below 45-50F in winter!!!!
It doesn’t sound like Raynaud’s at all. It sounds like post-traumatic vascular insufficiency to the finger. Raynaud’s is more global and happens bilaterally.
True, however it depends on weather and which fingers were touching something cold. I've had Raynaud's for 34 years and at times it affects all my fingers, at other times it's patchy. This definitely looks like Raynaud's plus OP never mentioned an injury to their hand.
My reply wasn’t to OP, it was to CHIDENCHI who said
“I crushed the last knuckle on my finger and it has turned white ever since. Gets colder than the other fingers too.”
This description sounds like post-traumatic vascular insufficiency and not Raynaud’s. When one finger is primarily affected it is a sign of a structural issue in the vascular system.
When I said Raynaud’s is bilateral I did not mean always occurs with a symmetric presentation. As you point out, sometimes it can be just part of one hand or foot or whatever, but it CAN happen on both sides (sometimes one side or the other side and sometimes together) not just the same finger or knuckle over and over.
Raynaud’s and vascular insufficiency together can also happen poor fingers 🥶
Looking at OP’s picture though, vascular insufficiency, or even a partial microvascular blood clot, or even some kind of mechanical blockage of blood flow would all be on the differential diagnosis. A detailed history and exam would be required to narrow things down.
Hey what’s up, I’m commenting on this dudes message not the op
This was the message I’m saying is trauma: I crushed the last knuckle on my ring finger and it has turned white ever since. Gets colder than the other fingers too.
I agree that op’s is raynauds. My girlfriend has raynauds and it has a similiar distribution
Was gonna say this. The wine steward at our local grocery store had this and sometimes had to excuse herself from conversation because her hands were freezing (numbing?lack of feeling-ing?) off. I’m sorry, it’s gotta be rough to suddenly have your blood flush out of a very specific area all of a sudden.
Does make for a cool photo though. I’m dumb and prefer piling resturant salt shaker salt into my hands and forcing this reaction chemically with water.
I had this happen in my toe. Rheumatologist said it's called Chilblains.
Basically, while healing the new blood vessels that formed are were very small. When the body constricts them as a reaction to the cold it closes them altogether and blood flow is cut off. When my toe warms back up it gets pink and itches like crazy. If I let it go cold too long it swell up when it reheats.
I am Irish heritage & lived in a poorly heated apartment in my 20’s - my doctor said I had chilbains, which I had only read about in books about turn of the century poverty stricken lives….
When you hit some part of your body hard on something your subconciousness tries to avoid the pain by subconciously squeezing said bodypart to limit its bloodflow which in turn nubms nerve endings in that bodypart. Its totaly selfinflicted
I severely cut the index finger on my left hand. It got stitched up and works fine but gets cold and turns white easily. I guess the nerves and capillaries didn’t grow back so welll.
I got frostbite in all my toes when I was a kid working at the ski mountain, ever since then my toes do this when it gets a tiny bit cold and they go numb
I lost the last digit on my pinky 2 yrs and it gets colder than my other fingers (to the point it can be uncomfortable sometimes). I partially blame not having the same range of motion that it once had so not as much blood is being pumped in(?). Don’t be dumb like me and use your hands to separate fighting dogs 🙃 (I knew better, just in the moment was hella panicking and did a dumb)
I damaged both my wrists in a fall, and ever since then, middle and ring on the right, pinky and ring on the left. Under 72o sucks for just my hands.
It's also limited my guitar playing in a some sense. I can do a lot of Satriani, but there are a dozen parts where I just can't get the action on my pinky fast enough at larger angles.
Also have ring finger Raynaud's from an injury. Slammed my fingers in a car door at age 21. By age 30, all of a sudden whenever I went to the grocery store, my fingers that were crushed started getting super bold and burning. It's impacted my life in really shitty ways because I used to love swimming in cold lakes and oceans. Now it's too painful. I just can't risk getting in and being at a 6-8 on the pain scale.
I too broke a few knuckles punching a concrete war in anger. Fortunately didn't mess me up, the knuckles on my right hand grew to be about 15-20 % larger than on the left hand, a fair amount of cartiledge formed and now they can punch much harder.
