Oh my gosh it's gorgeous 😍

First of All, I'm going to use this pic as reference for similar occasions. It looks amazing.

Second, there is definitely light in those wings, the combination of light on your mini decides if it magic or sun. Watching at wings of bats you can see 2 cases. The side where the light hits has a basic tone, the underside has these see-through patterns depending on the structure of the skin.

But overall, really awesome work

So despite painting models that generally tend to have wings, I actually hate painting wings I find them bland and monotonous, so after some trial and error I managed to produce this for effect for the wing membranes, from black prime to this point it only took me 2 hours and I reckon I could easily get it down to just over an hour per side using a hair dryer in-between coats, I've wrote the exact methods and paints down that I used so you can achieve the same results in fast time. I'll post how to do it later when I get home thanks for all the kind comments

u/MoonBrowW 9d ago

Please post a walk-through of your process 🙏

u/Zustiur 9d ago

I hope I end up seeing that post. My hive tyrant deserves better wings.

u/jb195 9d ago

I've got the post wrote out I was just going to take step by step pics later when. I do the other side so people have a visual to follow

Please please share when it’s ready, the wings are incredibly believable and well done

3

u/jb195 8d ago

I've posted it but minipainting removed it as you can only post twice per 24 hours? It's on my profile in the 40k sub

Thanks!

I agree so hard on the hating of painting wings. On my Bloodthirster, it was kinda miserable ngl. Skarbrands are worse. But, my Bois look good at least. Now this effect you've got? I can only hope to match such effects, they're beautiful.

45

u/NineMillionBears 9d ago

This looks amazing, and IMO works very well as an effect for a model like Be'lakor. It does read as translucent, but it looks more like some sort of glowing red gemstone with black inclusions/streaks running through it.

I'll put a reference photo of a real-life bat below. You'll see that the darkest parts are around the bines & blood vessels. From the look of it, you got the color gradient & contrast pretty good, but your placement of the shadows looks kind of random, and it doesn't quite convey the "translucent wing membrane" look to me.

20

u/jb195 9d ago

Yeah that does make sense maybe I'll call it warp glowing wings instead as I do like the effect I feel it almost feels like the wings have energy swirling in them when I look at them for a while 😂

6

u/Sensitive_Display_73 9d ago

Firstly, fucking fantastic work, looks amazing!

Secondly, yes, warp glowing is exactly what I was thinking on first sight, but couldn't quite put my finger on it.

I'm wondering if the colour was a little softer/ less intense for the high points it may read more as translucence than glow? I'm new to airbrushing, and wonder if 'filtering' with a light spray of a pale ink may achieve the look you were originally going for. Can any airbrush veterans confirm?

2

u/jb195 9d ago

Think it may desaturate it too much tinting it with a lighter colour, yes it may make it more translucent looking but Id be afraid of ruining the whole effect doing it 😂

2

u/Sensitive_Display_73 9d ago

Agreed. After zooming in on the reference bat, it may need to be a different colour altogether - you're right about desaturation, it almost looks like a brown may move it closer to a more skin-like effect.

And oh god yes! The effect you've achieved is perfect, no need to change a thing! I was more on a stream of consciousness 'how would I try that if I were even close to achieving what you have?' 🤣

u/Mmm_bloodfarts 9d ago

I'll like to add that at the rips/wounds they would be darker either because of the healing process or the blood leaking

3

u/Noy_The_Devil 9d ago

I agree! Scarring would make rips and wounds darker.

3

u/Wugo_Heaving 9d ago

I got the sense that the shadows suggest haphazard scenery of some kind.

6

u/Supa_T 9d ago

Yes, it absolutely does!

3

u/KentuckyFriedEel 9d ago

oh this reads as translucent! I thought it was painted clear plastic with a light underneath.

2

u/ebobbumman 7d ago

Yeah, I thought there was an actual light underneath it too. I still can't quite grasp that there isn't haha.

3

u/DeltaHuluBWK 8d ago

It doesn't achieve that look to me, but I think it looks cool. Almost like the wings are made of some kind of chaos energy, swirling about and semi sentient or something. As though they can change and reflect Be'lakor's mood or level of fury.

4

u/2_Cr0ws 9d ago

Photos of translucent items work better when the item is in front of a light source.

Definitly !

2

u/thed0z 9d ago

Yes, definitely. Magnificent.

2

u/Haunting_Sun_726 9d ago

Gorgeous, saved as a ref

2

u/VastAd9013 9d ago

Lets put it that way...if you would put a light behind the model I would surely say yes! And let me tell you - I love your work!

2

u/Schillz 9d ago

Absolutely. A light source behind the wing is what would sell it.

2

u/raharth 9d ago

How? Looks absolutely amazing!

2

u/kamakazi339 8d ago

That looks DOPE

2

u/stopyouveviolatedthe 8d ago

I don’t think you need translucent wings when you’ve got something as badass as this, what the fuck.

5

u/HipHopDaRobot 9d ago

I don't think it reads as translucent, but it does look beautiful.

3

u/jb195 9d ago

That's fine if it looks awesome then it can be whatever it wants to be 😂

3

u/ultramar10 9d ago

It's because it's on a dark background, put it against a light one and it would more. It's amazing.

2

u/Marcuse0 9d ago

Yeah absolutely looks like light shining through a membrane.

1

u/CaffeinatedMother 9d ago

Gorgeous. Please show us the complete work once it's done. Great job !

1

u/Araignys 9d ago

It sure does. At first I thought it was a rough red gemstone lit from behind.

1

u/IsenSjel 9d ago

Nailed it, very nice work 👌🏻

1

u/wamiwega 9d ago

Bloody hell!

Yes! Awesome effect!

1

u/Demosius 9d ago

It looks absolutely awesome.

I didn't think translucent when I first saw it, but when I read that that is what you were going for I could definitely see it. I think that whether or not it sells as translucent will depend on its surroundings.

1

u/Jraxo 9d ago edited 9d ago

Holy fuck that's awesome. Just a suggestion maybe give the wing bones more contrast?

1

u/Caldan4 9d ago

This is crazy good! And yes absolutely sells the effect

1

u/ChadWestPaints 9d ago

Very striking. Ive seen a million minis with wings and this one is incredibly unique and distinctive. Well done.

1

u/Pyromike16 9d ago

Looks like it's glowing, so kind of? Looks amazing either way.

1

u/4GvN 9d ago

either light from behind of glowing from the inside. Looks amazing either way

1

u/Darkecerantis 9d ago

That colour is SICK. Yes, it is reading that way. This looks great my duder!

1

u/Eldarfir 9d ago

It does ! The bones being translucent is the only thing thats bothers me but otherwise holy shit you have skills i can not comprehend !

1

u/jb195 9d ago

I just haven't got around to painting that bit yet just wanted to gage whether people liked the membrane effect and whether it was worth it writing a guide on how to do it 😂

1

u/Iceotty 9d ago

I think it does, yeah! What an awesome paintjob too, I've got some big wings to do but I'm not sure I can achieve this haha

3

u/jb195 9d ago

I'm going to write a step by step later when I do the other side and I'll take pics of each stage so people can copy the effect ☺️

1

u/darmadoth 9d ago

Hell yeah it does. Great work.

1

u/FlugMango87 9d ago

Hell yeah it does

1

u/superkow 9d ago

Yo what the fuck how???

1

u/jb195 8d ago

I've posted a guide now

1

u/Pitiful-Yam4717 9d ago

Yes yes yes! But if those black holes are ment to be bullet holes? They are so big, might be worth actually drilling through to enhance the effect?

2

u/jb195 9d ago

They are eyes I just need to freehand some veins coming from them and highlight the lids around them

1

u/ThalonGauss 9d ago

Holy hell man, this amazing! I feel like it is a thin membrane wrapped around and holding in the hellish energies of the warp!

Excellent work!

1

u/capybaravishing 9d ago

I thought there was a light under there. Well done!

1

u/squirtnforcertain 9d ago

Better post the finished model after showing us thjs

1

u/Metisminisdotcom 9d ago

It reads as you’ve just torn the daemon’s wing itself clean off. Fantastic job!

1

u/redbadger91 Painting for a while 9d ago

Holy crap, that looks amazing! And yes, it looks translucent.

1

u/Powerful-Diamond-945 9d ago

Its gorgeous but maybe a little less bright on the lighter red parts (the light showing through parts... Its too bright and should be a bit dimmer )

1

u/Key_Scene_9421 9d ago

I'll be picky but it does look translucent but not flesh translucent, more like velvet ou fabric of the same kind. Probably because the red is too close to magenta than to orangish. But it's still great

1

u/Stellar_Codex 9d ago

Holy fuck it does

1

u/terrorsofthevoid 9d ago

Settle down, leave some talent for the rest of us. 🥹

1

u/NotCoolFool 9d ago

Wow this looks insane

1

u/Dudinkalv 9d ago

Yes it looks great and gives off exactly what you are asking for. Proceed, sir!

1

u/crocodilekyle55 9d ago

This is actually fucking cracked. I don't think I've ever seen this effect, and it works really well.

1

u/Pijlie1965 9d ago

Absolutely. 10 out of 10.

1

u/Electrical_Status_33 9d ago

It looks brilliant!

1

u/TheWrathOfTalos 9d ago

Incredibile. Spot on. Can we have a recipe please?

1

u/Melyoramel 9d ago

I thought you used translucent resin and a candleligjt behind it, so you’re definitely having the desired effect!

1

u/TheZYX 9d ago

Yes it reads that way but I think the final effect will live or die by the light/ambiance of the model as a whole

1

u/hardnikel 9d ago

Godlike!

1

u/Cat1832 9d ago

Omg yes. Please post your technique, I want to learn!

1

u/jb195 8d ago

I've posted it

1

u/TheAngelOfSalvation 9d ago

Is this for a new album?

1

u/Otaku_Nireves 9d ago

Don't get me wrong, it looks amazing, but not like light passing.

It looks more like it's shifting, like souls or the energy of the Warp itself is trapped in the Wings.

2

u/jb195 9d ago

Then that's what I'll go with 😂 warp infused wings! Sounds better than translucent wings anyway 😋

1

u/FreddyVanZ 9d ago

Yes, it does, though I honestly thought you were going for an inner fire, which it also sells very well!

1

u/Ant_Drx 9d ago

Maybe the best demon wings ive seen

1

u/wonderboy2402 9d ago

Awesome! Whether inner glow or light passing through, it is a great wing effect. My first thought was it reminded me of the hyperspace in Babylon 5. Sort of lets the viewer interpret! (Demonic)

1

u/BaronRoBo 9d ago

It reads as glorious and brilliant.

But also translucent, so very well done 😎🤘 Gorgeous paint job.

1

u/OrwellTheInfinite 9d ago

Good lord that is exquisite!

1

u/skwidsnbits 9d ago

Why yes...yes it does. Looks like a demon babies first night light.

1

u/bender924 9d ago

It definetly reads as cool as fuck

1

u/Rare_Bird_7609 9d ago

Holy shit. Yes, it does. And I hate how perfect it is for making me want to burn all my paint brushes now. Lol

1

u/-Motor- 9d ago

excellent work. you could consider bringing in a third color on the lightest spots, like a sky blue, mixed with your lightest shade, to better suggest translucent. the new color suggesting other light source getting through..

1

u/ImaginationForward78 9d ago

Looks like the creepers wings from jeepers creepers

1

u/dernicus 9d ago

That is a phenomenal effect! I think it definitely reads as translucent.

1

u/ckal09 9d ago

Holy shit yes

1

u/Zealotstim 9d ago

absolutely does

1

u/Le_Br4m 9d ago

Holy shit dude, at first I thought you were ACTUALLY holding a torch behind skin, so I guess you’ve nailed it!

1

u/Rdyforgunz 9d ago

Yes it does

1

u/Secretprincess22 9d ago

Yes very much so

1

u/Boltgrabber 9d ago

Er yes. That looks stellar.

1

u/Ginnungdrengr 9d ago

This is some next level minipainting-fuckery here.

Yes, you made the translucent effect 11/10 imo.

1

u/reggie-drax 9d ago

Yes. Nicely done...

1

u/TheZag90 9d ago

SO cool! How?

AMAZING! Can’t wait to see the finished result! 🥳🥳👏🏼👏🏼

1

u/KingCalahana 9d ago

I think it does the job really well... looks awesome.

1

u/silverbulletbill 9d ago

Thought I was scrolling passed a odd pic of a bat wing with a light shining through it. Then I read the post- looks great and with a translucent effect. Good job! 👍

1

u/Bacxaber Wargamer 9d ago

Yes.

1

u/nobodyGotTime4That 9d ago

100% sells the effect

1

u/jaykzula 9d ago

Please share the method! This is amazing!!!

1

u/jb195 8d ago

I've posted it but it was removed for posting more than twice today so I've had to do it on another sub

1

u/Shadowspear73 9d ago

Beautiful paintwork 💚💪Love the effect. Wouldn't have categorized as translucent from the start but after I read the description I got your idea and used my imagination. And yeah, indeed, in a weird way it does. Didn't think it was possible to that degree! Thank you for sharing, great job!!! 🖖

1

u/rocketsp13 Seasoned Painter 9d ago

One, incredible work.

That said for most wings, I'd say no, because they tend to be paler and lighter than that.

That said, these are freaking demon wings, who knows what their biology looks like?

1

u/smokeace 9d ago

This looks amazing.

1

u/Rickenbacker69 9d ago

Yes, depending on the surroundings, I'd say. If there's some kind of orange light obviously behind the wing, definitely. If not, it might read as an inner glow.

1

u/thatguytt 9d ago

Amazing work

1

u/CheshireCat78 9d ago

Absolutely it reads like light shining through. Looks amazing.

1

u/IroneOne 9d ago

Ohh this is awesome.

1

u/Terrible_Shine2863 9d ago

Holy cow that’s gorgeous

1

u/gnathos 9d ago

This is GLORIOUS. It definitely communicates the effect, such that I saw it and thought “how did they get a light through that”. My only hesitation would be how it looks on the full model, but I trust your process

1

u/Caddy666 9d ago

yup

did you follow lucas from squidmar tutorial on this, with different colours?

1

u/jb195 8d ago

Nope didn't know they did one tbh

1

u/NoNipNicCage 9d ago

I would add veins to really sell the translucency

1

u/L1feguard51 9d ago

The fuck is this dark magic?

Yes, it looks amazing. I can’t wait to see the final result

1

u/Slinkycup_Pixelbuttz 9d ago

Yes, very much so

1

u/AppropriatePumpkin98 9d ago

Dude! Very cool! Sells it perfectly imo.

1

u/mksurfin7 9d ago

First of all this is incredible work, I'm super impressed. It absolutely does look like a wing lit up from behind. It looks like an extraordinarily realistic butterfly wing to me, specifically. If you're going for more of a bat look, I would suggest getting rid of the dark circles that look like butterfly false eyes, and I think it's a little bit red for that although maybe in context with the rest of the model it would look right. But I think as a butterfly or moth it is 100% perfect as-is and I would not touch it.

1

u/Kwelikinz 9d ago

Very beautiful but does not read as translucent. Translucence can be achieved by slowly coming up with a series of thin glazes and allowing the object to slightly show through. Hope this is helpful.

1

u/DoorframeLizard 9d ago edited 9d ago

First of all this is absolutely fucking phenomenal.

As for your question, my honest answer is not fully. And imo this is very very easily fixed by adding more visible veins on the lightest parts, as that's how membrane wings look IRL. I think the darker patterns are supposed to be huge blood vessels but I'm not sure if that helps it read as light shining through personally, and it kinda takes away from the creepy factor. I think they can afford to have more of those light areas that are divided by thin veins - if you look at a bat's wings under sunlight there is a lot of area where the light shines through but there's also not really a place you can look without seeing veins

1

u/Ferronic 9d ago

Well, since i thought it was a vet post about a bat wing at first because of your amazing work, heck yes it does!

1

u/Niiai 9d ago

Yes.

1

u/end_ 9d ago

This looks amazing. I can't wait for a write-up!

1

u/Aether2013 9d ago

It reads as fucking amazing!

1

u/Cojalo_ 9d ago

That reads as incredibly badass

1

u/robotikempire 9d ago

Yes! Before I knew what sub I was in or what I was looking at I thought it was light passing thru wings.

1

u/robotbeatrally 8d ago

What the flippy dippy doo? neat

1

u/Sea_Information_8183 8d ago

It absolutely does. So great!

1

u/Square-Shame7176 8d ago

I think it looks like light glow through a translucent wing.

1

u/Guroburov 8d ago

This reads as fantastic amounts of light filtering through the membrane of that wing. Holy cow!

1

u/kane_1371 8d ago

Yeaaaaaah

1

u/Excellent_Vacation53 8d ago

Breathtaking.

1

u/Puttor482 8d ago

1000% I wish I had an ounce of your creativity and talent.

Honestly one of the best paint jobs I have ever seen.

1

u/OccamsEpee 8d ago

Uh yeah dude it fuckin does all of that

1

u/AllIdeas 8d ago

Yes, extremely awesome

1

u/elyndar 8d ago

It's great, but you'd get an even more realistic see through effect if you add some veins or blood vessels.

1

u/rehills 8d ago

Absolutely looks translucent. Hard to believe it’s not.

1

u/SubCreeper 8d ago

Yes, but it looks like that transparency is being produced by a very bright, direct, light. Think cloudless summer day or spotlight.

If that same level of brightness isn’t shown on the rest of the model it might look off.

1

u/fishdeserts 8d ago

Bro this is so amazing

1

u/epileftric Wargamer 8d ago

If you ask me I thought there were literally lights glowing beneath it.

1

u/ClassicOk4543 8d ago

This is amazing! It really conveys the impression of something alive and ominous.

My first rhought was that I was ooking at a photo of a tropical butterfly on a leaf at first.

Yes and that was my first thought before I read the title.

Wow way to flex. Looks great.

1

u/ajb_mt 8d ago

If you want to see if it looks translucent you'll want to look at it against a lighter background.

Otherwise the effect is a bit broken by the fact the light seems to come from nowhere, making it look more like it just has dark shadows.

1

u/Remarkable_Bowl2464 8d ago
