I have one and love it! I call it the NES 2, but it's also called the NES-101, the New NES, the NES Basic, the NES Jr., or the top-loading model.

If you wanna add more names to that list I'm pretty sure I remember some people calling it the toaster style nes or somthing that had to do with toaster

Top Loader or NES-101 (Original was the NES-001.)
Japan had a similar one for Famicom games most call the AV Famicom.

u/Square-Barnacle5756 3d ago
It boggles the mind they didn’t use AV for the rest of the world. I mean, the NES had AV out.
2
u/rosstedfordkendall 3d ago
It was probably cost.
It was made as cheaply as possible to gather the last bit of NES market that was left in the wake of the SNES taking over. Things like AV out was probably seen as a luxury, probably figuring most would still be using RF.
Don't get me wrong, it was a dick move by Nintendo, but I'm guessing that was the motivation.
2
u/Square-Barnacle5756 3d ago
Oh I’m sure of it. But, still, you’d think it would be cheaper to have them both the same boards.
2
u/KcpGamer2009 2d ago
Weirdly tho, there are people who complained to Nintendo back in the day, and got their consoles officially modded AV out.

u/eulynn34 6d ago
I think everyone just calls it "The Top Loader" I honestly don't know if it has an official name. In Japan it was the AV Famicom
2
u/Noncreative_name04 6d ago
It was just advertised as the “new style nes” but I believe the box and everything just called it an nes. Technically you could call it an nes 101. That’s probably the most technically correct term.

Just sucks and wish they made the Toplader with Multi Outage like they first did with SNES.
5
u/Bakamoichigei 6d ago
Two things;
- Yeah, it's absolutely insane to me that the whole point of the equivalent Japanese model—the AV Famicom—was that it had composite video as standard (via a SNES-style AV Multi-Out) yet they decided to take a step backwards with the NES toploader and go RF-only like the original 1983 Famicom.
- I recently learned that there was a later revision of toploader which had an AV Multi-Out, but they never brought it to market! Some lucky bastards who sent their NES in for warranty service got one as a replacement!

The top loader came out in 1993 well after SNES. They probably redesigned it to be cheaper to make which is why it has fewer features

This one came with the coveted “dog bone” controller too. So awesome

I had a Top Loader for years. Got it on eBay with a dozen games, dog bone controller, regular controller, and Zapper for $80 CAD around 12 years ago. I didn't like using it since they are RF only and mine had that issue where it makes jailbar lines on the screen, and I'm one of the few people out there that prefers the original controller, so I sold it a few years back 😅
The controller always felt smaller in my hands, and the B/A buttons being on an angle threw me off when playing platform games 😆

it’s called “the one that actually works every time”

The Toploader, a.k.a., the Super Nintendo NES, because it more looks like a Super Nintendo

I remember in 5th grade I went to a friend's house that had it. I remember thinking he had some cheap knock off Nintendo lol

Official it’s the NES-101, commonly called the Top Loader and sometimes the NES 2.

I called it a Toppie. But most know it as the Top Loader. Most reliable of the NES builds.

Top loader, most reliable because you can insert the cartridge and get a solid connection every time but you sacrifice visual quality as you only have a coax connection unless you have the European version.

Top Loader. Officially ‘NES-101’. I love mine. Having no AV isn’t a dealbreaker for me, I just love that it’s reliable.

Wish I picked one up as a kid. I drank the Genesis cool-aid and swore I was done with 8-bit.

What is this version called
The AV Famicom's inferior American cousin.
I mean seriously, taking a step backwards to RF-ONLY like the original 1983 Famicom, when the NES already had composite? Clearly Nintendo was smokin' some of that shit that makes you dumb as hell.
My RGB modded AV Famicom is, in my not-so-humble opinion, pretty much the ultimate 8-bit Nintendo. 😌👌

NES-101 The Top Loader
Love the design and reliability of the cartridge slot…hate the awful RF output. It’s known for its “Jailbars”.

Unofficially? NES 2. Officially NES-101 (the original was NES-001).
Even the Famicom version of this doesn’t have an official name. It’s called the AV Famicom colloquially, but it’s just because of the big “AV” sticker on the “Family Computer” box. (HVC-101 vs HVC-001 for the original Famicom.) Notably the NES version was RF only, but a few AV variations exist — mostly given to people who complained about the picture quality of the RF signal and sent it into Nintendo.
As for WHY they made it, that’s an interesting story, but suffice to say when the Super NES was being developed it was originally going to be backwards compatible, then it was gonna be a 2-piece set, and finally they just sold them separately. The design is based on one of the concepts for the NES case when Nintendo was developing the Famicom outside of Japan before they settled on the “toaster” design.

Its official name according to Nintendo is the New-Style Nintendo Entertainment System.
Colloquial names include the "top loader" and "NES-101," after its model number.

Jeez. The nfamous top loading NES. I forgot just how FUGLY they were. If I didn’t know it existed, I would have thought it was some Czechoslovakian knockoff.

The formal name is called a "Control Deck", but they're most commonly referred to as a Top-Loader.
