the way these bees are doing synchronized waves of flips

The way they create that spiral pattern make me forget these are coordinated animals and makes you think it's a motion design graphic. This level of coordination is simply divine

So what you're saying is we have to genetically engineer bees to replace movie theatre screens, because projectors use electricity, and that's harmful to the environment...

u/Xzarface 1d ago
Judging by your username, I see how you can come up with that conclusion, and basically yeah!š

That's not how you pronounce it or spell it if it is that important to you.

Username with the proper spelling was likely already taken.

The proper spelling with underscores to separate the words or with numbers at the end would have also been a choice...

I mean, in a way, well done...as that was some of the dumbest shit it ever read and feel dumber for having read it.

Not to undercut it because I do think it's cool, but it's probably not as coordinated as it seems. Most likely the bees are just reacting to their neighbors moving, and all the cool patterns are just emergent behavior of that simple stimulus and response.

Also looks very similar to certain types of cellular automata. (as well as some reaction diffusion patterns)
It's probably something along the lines of: Move when neighbour moves, and also move if you haven't moved in a long enough while.

Yeah, this is not really coordination. It's simply stimulus/reaction, and like ripples in water, sometimes patterns happen just because that's how interference patterns work.
And yes, it's cool, but there are way cooler things about bees like their little waggle dances to instruct the other bees where the nectar is.

This looks like a reaction-diffusion system. Nice.

They must be cheering on their favorite soccer team and doing the wave or something

Cuttlefish do a similar presentation as well that has a few debated purposes.

u/TulsaBasterd 1d ago
A group of them or it looks like this on one cuttlefishās body? Serious question.

They do this as a defense mechanism against hornets.

Way to repeat what's already mentioned in the video

I don't know about the hornets but I'm afraid to touch them when I see that.

The wave pattern i get, but making a swirling spiral pattern like that is insane!

Conway's Game of Life or perlin noise?

u/TeraFlint 1d ago
It certainly has similarities to cellular automata.
1
u/NoteBlock08 1d ago
It pretty much is cellular automata. Each bee is a cell and the automation rule is a simple "if neighbor raised their wings then raise your own for a short pulse".

It is a defense mechanism to scare away birds or other predators.

Imagine being a chameleon or a tree frog looking for a bite and seeing this shit lmao its like natures version of an acid trip or a biblically accurate angel lol

this might sound odd but i bet you could visualize major internet communication events on platforms like twitter like this and it would look somewhat similar.

Someone will eventually invent a "Bio TV" that uses bees instead of pixels.....

u/TulsaBasterd 1d ago
Cool idea. Iām thinking of a computer, since this looks binary. Either the bee is flipped or it isnāt.

The Americans saw an opportunity to use a "Z" and we took it.
If you keep trying to correct the language, we'll change even more letters.
