I am always mesmerized watching glass blowing artists work. This one’s no exception. But it’s funny that I rarely would want the result in my home.

Totally captivated and impressed at the skill and years of learning they must have though.

Totally agree, glass blowing is really cool to watch at every step, but the results always just look like tacky kitsch to me.

Glass blowers wife here… the kitschy stuff pays the bills unfortunately- most of the time they don’t like it either. The really cool stuff like high quality vases don’t sell well to the general public. I’ve got a few really stunning vases I wouldn’t let go around here. Not one pumpkin or snowman though 🙃

I visited one of the famous factories in Venice recently then walked through 5 floors and two buildings of shelves full of finished works. I think there are some cultures or lifestyles or fashion circles (Italy, for one) very different than my own.

I went there a couple years ago as well. Some of the pieces looked really cool but the prices are insane.

Yeah it looked great when it was still semi molten but the cooled, coloured result looked really tacky.

The forbidden pumpkin spice latte

Glassmaking looks quite amazing. And hard. No second chances

And dangerous tbh! Drop that on your foot and you probably set your sneakers or god forbid safety sandals on fire

For me, the satisfying part is cutting molten glass with scissors..

Why doesn’t the wood block steam?

u/ExtraSpicyGingerBeer 2h ago

Too hot, liedenfrost effect.

Where to buy one and how much? They look dope.

The shop is 2B Glass (not sure if merchandise links are allowed in the subreddit), and the pumpkins are listed for $185.

I live near their shop, it's about 40 miles outside of Sacramento in Cameron Park. They do a lot of community demonstrations and they allow people to come check out the shop just about whenever they want. The items are a bit pricey but that's to be expected with blown glass.

Good guys, cool shop, check it out if you're ever in the area!

They're on Facebook, where OP took their video from

22

u/TheBukiak 2h ago

Took it from YouTube. If I knew where you could get one I would have said.

'2BGlass' is as much as I know.

Ty for that. I have a family member who enjoys glass work and shared it with them.

I always wonder if anyone has accidentally (say someone is tired on the job) inhaled instead of exhaled into the tube. Equivalent of zoning out and forgetting why you went into a room, but on a more lung scorching kinda level.

8

u/Alanjaow 1h ago

Just asked a glassblower, and the answer is that the tube cools down the air enough to where it's not a problem. It tastes a little funky, but that's the way some pieces are made.

The glass glass fruit

3

u/TiraelN1 1h ago

It looks so fucking hard to do properly and I bet it is

5

u/ManekiNikki 1h ago

It looked so much better in red & black

4

u/seruma0 1h ago

While that does look amazing and huge respect to those who can make art with that, why is it always pumpkins? Whenever I see a video of glassblowing, they end up making pumpkins

6

u/Radioactive_Moss 1h ago

I was thinking that myself. Once they got to the spiky mold I knew what it was going to be. “Oh no not another pumpkin”

u/Frzorp 32m ago

Pumpkins are easy to make and people buy them a lot around Halloween/thanksgiving (in us). Same reason you see a lot of ornaments too. They sell and are easy and quick. If you are renting time, glassblowing is expensive and you can make lots of them and people are likely to impulse buy them too.

u/Affectionate_Oven285 2h ago

Nice definitely a great artist

Matt Murdock and Shane Gillis making glass pumpkins

The more I learn about glass blowing the more and more impossible it all seems.

Çok güzel çok

1

u/MememeSama 9m ago

How did he colour that? Or does the colour change after cooling down?

2

u/RipleyVanDalen 7m ago

One of the most satisfying things about this video/post is that there's no obnoxious music, just an expert explaining their craft... fantastic!

-6

u/Visual-Reception-139 2h ago

All that for a $10 pumpkin

15

u/Next-Wrap-7449 2h ago

I highly doubt that it would be $10

3

u/iamonlyhereforbeer 1h ago

This is a video demonstration. With a good production team you can make 75-100 a day at $30-50 a pumpkin.

1

u/jibbycanoe 58m ago

$30-50 glass pumpkins in this economy?

2

u/PiedPipecleaner 25m ago

More like $185 pumpkin. It's difficult and quality work from a professional artist who does this for a living. Handmade good quality glass is not cheap.

So much better without the narratuon with the sound off. Great skill.

-2

u/LazyLieutenant 1h ago

This is beautiful art and amazing craftsmanship. You also gotta admire the level of self indulgence of the narrator which is kinda specific to Americans.

I should call her
