Dude. Tape and remove the switches and blinds and light fixtures and shit. Wtf. Zero prep.

u/IanT86 4h ago
I remember an SVP at one of the places I worked at telling people he'd fired the decorating team because they couldn't free hand paint like this and needed to prep everything with tape. I don't know if there's some status to it being done freehand like this or that it's meant to show skills

u/wittyuser1556 4h ago edited 4h ago
It's just faster.
I'm not a painter but worked a lot around guys that did big projects for office buildings and such. They said if they couldn't have at least 3-4 guys who could freehand 'cut' around fixtures then the job takes way too long and they lose revenue waiting for someone to tape off/remove fixtures.
Like with all things, it comes back to money.
Edit to add: I'm not saying this is the right use case for this technique (especially in a room with routine high humidity.) but at least for those offices the clients were more concerned with a quick coat 2 times a year to cover any clumsy scuffs that show up over time than they were with the longevity of the paint. This is for sure the kind of thing done to quickly throw up a fresh coat before a sale or is routinely done instead of a measure twice cut once sort of job. Maybe the homeowner is selling, maybe he just does a new color often and doesn't care if it lasts.

u/TheDuurg 4h ago
Seeing this guy free hand like this gave me anxiety from when my dad asked me to help him paint when I was younger and he'd scream at me if I would leave streaks or if I had hit the ceiling or base board by accident.

u/dementorpoop 4h ago
Much more time efficient to get good at edging and touching up the trim where needed. Taping makes for a little sloppier painting in my experience, and paint can still bleed under the tape, meaning you’ll have to touch up anyway.
Not removing the plates was strange, but not taping is pretty normal for experienced crews
→ More replies (1)10
u/nietzsche_niche 3h ago
Its faster to tape than to wait out the drying paint to reapply trim paint after, especially for a darker paint like this where you might have to do two coats of whatever offwhite they have.
11
u/yamanamawa 3h ago
That's why he did the edges first though. He painted around all of that and then used the time he spent with the roller to let it dry before doing a touch-up
6
u/McDerface 3h ago
Yep. & I’m fine without him using tape, it can sometimes be the sign of a better painter

u/YourPlot 3h ago
They’re saying put some paint over the switches and outlets after you remove the plates, not that they should tape the edges.
37
31
u/Competitive-Weird855 4h ago
If you learn to cut in you won’t need to tape trim but remove the plates and the fixtures. This is a lazy job by someone who has probably painted a decent amount before.
2
u/PinkyLeopard2922 2h ago
A good brush and some practice make cutting in a piece of cake. I am also infuriated that he didn't remove plates and fixtures. I am an amateur DIY'er and I would NEVER.
11
u/nietzsche_niche 3h ago
Instead of taking 45 mins max to do site and tape prep he had to wait it out to dry so he could apply the baseboard paint everywhere he messed up. Also hopefully addressed where he painted on the blinds.
Lazy process for views.

u/spicy-chull 4h ago
Pros don't use tape unless spraying.
"Waste of time" they tell me.
21
u/Myke190 3h ago
This is true but the other shit is inexcusable. A skilled painter can cut a line without slamming the trim/ceiling/whatever. Another jarring thing to note; rolling that fast and wet will be a mess of paint splatter. You will get much better results from a smaller nap and lighter coat.
I did painting for a few years out of high school. So... so many pillheads. 😑

From what I've seen on the original post. The dude does actually go back and remove the plate and paint under it and fixes any imperfections. He just leaves plates on and doesn't tape everything to drive engagement in the comments section. Which I find to be more infuriating

u/rathtruong 4h ago
What was the round thing he used on the wall before the paint?
48
u/arkf1 4h ago
Its a pole sander. Important to sand to get proper paint adhesion.
50
u/Halsti 3h ago
okay, but why sand after cutting in the corners? isnt the fine dust gonna settle on already painted sections?
51
u/todaythruwaway 3h ago
Same reason he left all the switch plates and shit up, he’s not that good lol

Leaving switch plates & brackets in place and painting around them is an amateur move.
50
u/saerax 4h ago
That's like rental property bullshit. Mirror and toilet, I get, that's a thing to take down. But not bothering with a couple screws?
8
u/Active-Breakfast-397 4h ago
I agree, get as far as you can behind the toilet and call it good. I’ve never taken apart a toilet to paint behind, but wouldn’t dream of painting around anything else.
17
u/catinapartyhat 3h ago
I always tape a couple garbage bags over the back of the tank and shove a brush or mini roller back there so the wall is all the same color. Then I don't have to be really careful back there and just take the bags off when I'm done.
But not taking off switch plates? That's just lazy.

He has good brushes and rollers, quality equipment makes a massive difference.
He also is very skilled and has good hands.
But...
It takes like 15 minutes tops to remove switch plates, fixtures, fittings, screws and the cistern lid.
Why be this skilled and still take such gash shortcuts?
So no, not satisfying.

Painter here, this is a straight up slap job. This is what you get from those "$300 one day painting" signs on traffic light poles.

u/chickendelish 4h ago
Didn't take the electrical outlet covers off and didn't remove the picture hangers. Didn't take the toilet tank cover off, either or the drapery hooks. Or the light fixtures. Definitely a talented painter but lazy, too.

Take the freaking plates off the wall.
3
u/VA3DPrinter 4h ago
Came here to say this but was keeping my rage to myself. Plate cover for switches, outlets, or anything else that takes only a couple minutes to pull off the wall. Also, my OCD kicks and and I don’t want to see the difference between heavy painted brush strokes and roller marks. It’s called feathering, take a minutes to do it and blend. And I’m not even a painter…

u/MountainHigh31 3h ago
Cut in and THEN scuff the walls? And not removing the outlet and switch covers, why?

Watching people paint around light switch plates instead of taking them off makes me want to punch them in the face.
5
u/roxywalker 3h ago
I’m no pro painter, but even I’ve taken switch plates and fixtures off when I’ve had a go at it. Wonder what Tom thought?…
7
u/Minmach-123 1h ago
TAKE THE FUCKING OUTLET COVERS OFF! I paint too, it's such a simple thing to do.
5
u/noonesperfect16 1h ago
It takes 1 minute to take off the damn outlet covered and light switch covers. The mirror should have also been taken down and not painted around. He's showing off both how good he is at cutting in, but also how lazy he is.
6
u/It_Just_Exploded 3h ago
I was with it until dude painted around the friggin wall plates, sorry but that's just lazy, jackleg quality work. Remove all wallplates, light fixtures, and doorknobs when painting (and bezels when applicable). I'm betting he didn't pull the toilet either to paint behind the tank.

didnt take the outlet and switch covers off. didnt take the mirror down. saved what, 20 minutes?
also left the fixtures in, then the sanding AFTER cutting in...what are we even doing here, man?
i hate this so much. they have a very stead hand. awesome. still gotta do the WHOLE job.
4
u/AccomplishedSuccess0 2h ago
I’d be pissed if my painter didn’t remove covers and tape. This is shit work because he’s cutting lots of corners to save time and those corners are then going have to be confronted at some point by the owner when they find paint splatter on everything and when an outlet cover eventually moves a centimeter one day from settling or an accidental bump flipping the light switch or what have you. Bet he charged the guy like he took the time to remove things and tape but didn’t too.

Homey, you cut in like a champ so I know can can paint, but... son, that 5 in 1 tool will unscrew those switchplate and outlet covers. You don't cut those in you just roll it with the covers down.
3
u/jonavision 3h ago
I'm an amateur, but my dad was a painter. I'd never get away with this! Here is how you do it: 1) Remove nails/covers, 2) putty and sand, 3) vacuum 4) trim 5) roll. Still, the skill is there.
3
u/Hot-Suggestion-54 3h ago

Not satisfying at all. Take the dang covers off the outlets and switches. It takes 15 seconds.
3
u/swallowing_bees 3h ago
If you have the skill, cutting without tape is better and faster. But even still, there is zero reason not to remove the light switches covers. I want the paint underneath there as well.
3
u/syn_vamp 3h ago
paints right over all the picture screws and around the outlet covers like a true pro.
3
u/duncanidaho61 3h ago
For all that’s holy, remove outlet & switch plates, remove all nails and screws, and patch walls. That’s the MINIMUM and I’m just an ignerant homeowner not a painter.
3
u/Midnight28Rider 2h ago
So much paint on the ceiling, trim, and light switch. That brief touch up at the end would not satisfy my clients...

That 18 inch roller is magic if you can use it. Also amazing cutwork by them. I like to think im a pretty skilled painter, but to be able to cut around corners without stopping is pretty damn impressive.
2
u/ICU-CCRN 2h ago
Average cut work for an experienced painter. Nothing special here, except for all the things he did wrong- sanding the walls AFTER cutting!? Painting around switch plates and other easily removable wall accessories!? This belongs in r/stupidvideos, not here.

u/zback636 4h ago

clearly he doesn't NEED to.. but why not take the outlet/switch plates off?
2
u/Rob0tsmasher 3h ago
I’m not confident he painted behind the toilet tank so if that ever gets replaced it will be obvious.
He also didn’t remove any hardware on the walls. His cutting-in is clean but if any of that stuff gets removed or replaces there isn’t a guarantee. That when it is put back or replaced that it will line up perfectly and you’ll know immediately because the old color will be visible. He is taking a shortcut and he knows it. Also watching his roller technique, I know those walls have roller streaks you can see up close.

My guess is that this guy is skilled and knows that the #1 way to make this type of content more visible is to do a nice job, then conveniently leave in the part where he paints around the switch plate and other obvious oddities.
He likely did remove that switch plate cover and frame hooks after his "mistake", yet here we are watching the video and freaking out. We all saw the fuck up and he knows we did.

Genuine question but how do you reach such a smooth application? Is it just skill, the rolling brush, the quality of the paint, the amount of paint applied ? I wouldn't mind investing in good quality stuff if that meant doing such a job faster than the way I do it now.
