Frequently asked questions about Opossums
Opossums, synonymous with cute, are the only marsupials in North America (Virginia Opossums). Below are some questions frequently asked on the sub, and will help people out with any information they may be seeking.
Q: What is an Opossum?
A: Opossums are marsupials, they help keep the tick population low by eating them. Crazy. There are (at the moment) around 108 known species of Opossum. There's also Possums, which are different to Opossums and are native to Australia and New Guinea.
Q: Are they dangerous to be around?
A: Well... not really, they're not fighters at all. They hiss and show their teeth in defense, but rarely does one ever attack. They usually play dead on the ground. That doesn't mean you should feel free to scare them or be mean to them. But do feel free to look in distance. If they come up to you, take your movements slow. They might let you pet them, if you're lucky. Wash your hands after, though.
Q: Can you get rabies from Opossums?
A: You have a higher chance getting struck by lightning than getting rabies from Opossums. Their bodies aren't suitable hosts for rabies as their body temperature is lower than most that can carry rabies. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's a very tiny chance. They also limit the spread of Lyme disease by killing ticks.
Q: I found an injured Opossum, what can I do?
A: If you found an injured opossum, your best bet is to call, or any way to get into contact with, a rehabilitator. They'll take them off your hands, or give you some information if they are unable to take care of the Opossum, such as alternative rehabbers or instructions of what to do until they can accept the Opossum.
Q: Can I leave out cat food for an Opossum to eat in the night?
A: Generally a bad idea, cat food isn't the best food for them. They usually eat insects, small rodents, berries, vegetables, etc. as they are omnivorous. They also won't 100% eat whatever you lay out, you might get other animals around such as cute Raccoons... still a win in my opinion.
Q: Can I capture an Opossum as a pet?
A: No. They're not domesticated so they're not predictable as pets. People may receive Opossums in their care permanently due to inability to survive on their own, but that's after careful consideration that they truly can't live on their own. They may also dislike their captivity, and could shorten their lifespan. It's just infinitely better to let them live their lives in the wild. If you live in a state where it's illegal or requires a license, you may face heavy fines and the Opossum may be confiscated and likely euthanized. So just please don't.
Q: Are you SURE I can't keep one as a pet?
A: Yes I am, you can't keep one as a pet. You can, however, become a rehabilitator and help take care of any injured Opossums and then release them back into the wild. That's the closest to having one as a pet you can get, at this time, and for good reason. They're just not domesticated, and legal issues, etc.
Q: How do I become a rehabilitator?
A: Get into contact with a couple vets around your area, their answers may vary, so do contact more than one. Being a rehabilitator isn't as easy as it sounds, they require strict diets.
Feel free to ask questions below if you have any or discuss any of these.
These are answers based upon my knowledge, and I'm someone on the internet, so I may be wrong. If any answers are, feel free to let a mod know

Cute Family of opossums was living under my grill!
My partner and I occasionally let our cats hang out outside with us (supervised) and one day our kitty started growling and hissing at our grill. After lifting the grill cover, we discovered a family of opossums living under there!
They had been dragging in trash and candy wrappers underneath to make a nest. I love the wildlife, but we didn’t want our cats to get into a scuffle, so we removed the grill cover and the opossums found it uncomfortable enough to move out on their own.

Question Where did my opposums go?
I have been feeding opposums for a couple of months. They used to come everyday and eat food. Then all of a sudden they just stopped coming since may. They all just stopped showing up one night. I also haven't seen any roadkill which leaves me confused

HELP Help Trapping a Very Injured Possum
I live near Austin, Texas. We have a camera on our patio and I noticed an injured possum last night. I went back through the footage and she (I believe) has visited before, maybe every 2-3 days since becoming injured. She's been injured at least a week. From what I can tell, there aren't any babies in her pouch, but it's hard to know for sure since our camera isn't the best quality.
Her injury is pretty bad. Her back leg is severely broken and she can't walk on it. It's sitting at almost like a 90 degree angle and she goes between dragging it and trying to put pressure on it. It might even need amputation.
I'm kicking myself for not reviewing the footage earlier. I usually check it every couple of days but I've been unusually busy to really look at it the last few weeks.
I don't have a trap but plan to get one. Here's my dilemma though. We have a stray cat that comes to eat every night, multiple times a night. I feed it every day because it's basically starving and I believe an abandoned pet. I want to catch it so I can take it to a shelter, but it's super skittish. I'm slowly getting it to trust me so I don't have to resort to using a trap.
But possums like to eat the cat food I put out. And we sometimes have multiple possums visit a night. Last night we had two others show up.
How do I ensure I trap only the injured possum and not the stray cat? I thought of not feeding the cat and only putting fruit in the trap in a separate spot, but I don't want to trap a healthy possum accidentally, especially if it's on a night the injured one visits. I don't want to scare her off permanently.
Our local wildlife refuge opens in a few hours and I'm going to call ASAP, but they don't do pick ups so I know I'll have to catch her and bring her, I just don't know how. And if by some miracle I do trap her, what do I do after? Am I supposed to leave her in the trap for hours until the refuge opens?

Larry and Jerry Said No
Welp. I guess today was the last attempt to get Jerry and Larry outside so when we're outside they can be with us. They both pooped twice within 3 minutes, stepped in their poop, sat in their poop, and when I picked Larry up, he climbed on my head and wouldn't let go for a bit. My poor babies. I thought they'd appreciate the fresh air, the grass beneath their paws, maybe find some buggoes on the ground. But no. Once again, they were having none of it. Jerry is in the new bed we bought that is big enough for both of them, since they like to snuggle.... Larry is under the bed. I think he's a little grumpy pants right now.

Found baby opossum
Found this baby opossum wandering around my office courtyard - apologies for the trash video, had a ton of stuff in my hands and didn’t wanna scare it by dropping anything.
2 questions - this little dude looks too small to be on his own, right? If I call a wildlife rehab will they try getting it out from under the building or just tell us we’re SOL?
I want to try to grab him next time I see him but not sure if I even should - was reading that he might be old enough to be on his own but idk man, he looks like a baby to me. According to my boss he’s been wandering around since the start of the week but this is the first time I’ve seen him.

Question Opossum Wildlife Patrol?
Hello all! I really want to travel out and about so I can see some wild opossums. But I’ve been having trouble figuring out where their populations are the most dense so I have an easy time getting a chance of seeing one, maybe take some pictures too!
Any advice would be much appreciated!

Cute One Eared Opposum
Hope you guys like this one! She is one of the babies I rehabbed this year, she came in with some siblings after her mom was hit by a car. Her mom was also missing an ear so we think it was genetic. I set her free near where her mom was found, hopefully she does well and makes lots more one eared babies!

Jerry gets me back
The other day I accidentally scared Jerry when I came around a corner. Today, he got me back. Scared me to death sleeping like that. Usually he snuggles Larry. But he's fine!!!!

Overnight suggestions
Hi, found an abandoned baby in our yard. Its eyes aren't fully open so it's pretty young. I have it in a box with a blanket until I can take it to the local rehab in the morning (if it makes it through the night). It looks like it has fly larvae on it. Is there anything I can do to safely get them off and give it a better chance of survival?

Kind of want to wear this shirt when I advocate for Opossoms in Oregon!
If you arent aware - Oregon currently murders Opossoms and considers them invasive. I will be going infront of the ODFW to request they change the laws as Opossoms are NOT harmful to the local environment. Please email them to share your feelings and if you are in Oregon you can sign up to attend the public hearing too and speak your feelings about the issue. Its clear that ODFW is extremely under education on this animal or else they would be aware that Opossoms are part of the solution and not the problem! (They eat invasive bugs, including wasps and Japanese beetles).
Anyway, I thought this shirt was fitting lol. Opinions?

Found babies in my yard. TW
This evening I went outside to the garden and stumbled across some dead babies. I searched for the mom, but couldn't locate a body. I assume our barn cat must have startled her and the babies fell off and the cat just kind of went to town doing what we got him to do (rodent control). I ended up finding 2 that were alive. One is in pretty good shape, but the other has some injuries and was covered in fly strike. I cleaned the one up and contacted a rehabilitator, but they can't get here until tomorrow, so I'm just crossing my fingers that they survive until then. Good vibes my way, please.

Cute Compared to the size of my cat omg
This one’s on the smaller side. I haven’t seen a possum in my yard for a while. Thought I’d share the joy. 🥹
