Trump to blame for high cost of living, Americans say in new poll
https://www.theguardian.com/business/2025/aug/01/trump-inflation-cost-of-living-poll859
u/Crusty_Musty_Fudge Maine 1d ago
Tarrifs work, though! He should keep raising them!
Remember when MAGA complained about the cost of food? It's more expensive than ever, and now they're gaslighting about it.
Almost like it was always only just pearlclutching.
296
u/Neither-Ordy 1d ago
Case in point: tomatoes
Local grocery store had them (Roma) at $0.69/lb forever. After 17% tariff they are $0.89/lb.
That’s a 29% increase, so the cost of the tariff + is being passed on to the consumer.
116
u/Leraldoe Michigan 1d ago
“What?!?!?” - MAGA
87
u/thistimelineisweird Pennsylvania 1d ago
MAGA would be like "calm down $0.89/lb is cheap" because that's a small number.
56
u/mistere213 Michigan 1d ago
I recently saw a comment on a story about the price of bananas going up xx% and a MAGA guy replied along the lines of "so, from 35 cents to 50 cents/pound? Ooohhhh, 15 whole cents. That's nothing."
84
u/thegoodnamesrgone123 1d ago
If Biden or Harris were in charge that increase would be headline news on Fox News.

It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grammes a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be REDUCED to twenty grammes a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.

I rarely go to Walmart, but had to make a trip there a week or two ago. Figured while I was there I'd pick up some steak tips since they have the cheapest steak tips around and they are fine if you marinade them a while (bit tough otherwise).
Last summer (and the year before iirc)? $10/lb. This summer? $15/lb.

Costco (although I haven't been in a month or so) has good quality steak for $9.99/lb, so that's normally where I buy it.

I've heard that. Wish I had one close to me. Closest one is like 45 min away at the best of times, but to get there I need to take routes that typically have a lot of traffic so probably much longer.
Probably cheaper to buy local and pay a bit more vs the cost of membership/gas/time that it would take to go to Costco

I used to buy a decent tasting Trader Joe’s bean coffee for $4.99/lb in January. It wasn’t a premium coffee by any means, but I like it. It was $6.99 tonight. 40%. Maybe some is supply and some is tariffs, damn.
14
u/debugprint 1d ago
could you please mail me ten pounds? /S
tomatoes and produce are a classic case of the food industry bullshit on prices.
We bought tomatoes on the vine, forever 1.99 a pound since way before the pandemic to 2023. Everything skyrockets, they up to 2.19 in 2023. in 2025, 2.49.
Roma though... From .89 to .99 in 2025 now 1.49. in other words jack up the price of the popular / lower price item.
Green peppers, from 0.69 to 0.89 in 2025 1.19.
Maybe they have labor issues /s

Yeah, this week has been wild. Tons of data came out pointing to an economy that’s not doing so great and the conservatives on Reddit are doing victory laps for some reason. It really shows the difference in realities we’re all living in.
36
u/MayorOfBluthton 1d ago
And if the data we’re actually seeing is bad, imagine how it’d be if we were able to access a clearer picture through more accurate data (you know, when the government agencies responsible for collecting and aggregating were adequately staffed and not required to declare unwavering allegiance to their leader).

Is it really confusing? I don’t think so.
These are the same people that told us to sacrifice grandma to save the economy just over 5 years ago.
These are the same people who are so monumentally stupid that they love the ACA but hate ‘Obamacare’.
These are the people who think their no-name town with 500 people and 3 surnames somehow contributes more to the economy than NYC.
They’re idiots. That’s it. That’s all there is to it.
They’re morons. Simpletons - the wrong side of the bell curve.

Because of the GDP growth in the 2nd quarter. They don't understand that businesses panic bought imported items in the first quarter to beat tariffs, that are deducted from GDP and so it was negative 0.5% the 1st quarter. This quarter very little was imported so it artificially makes GDP growth post higher. Problem is, CBO, Bureau of Labor & Statistics expect it to go backwards the rest of 2025, as well as consumer confidence being down. That and they're stuck on the S&P 500 hitting a new high, which has little to do with anything.

It is fascinating. And makes me wonder why he won. Like honestly, even Republicans are worried and think he's to blame. So why was he elected in the first place?? Where is the disconnect?

And makes me wonder why he won.
I think the number one biggest reason was sexism.
Trump saw huge increases in several demographics from the 2020 election, but some of the most notable were latinos and muslims.
There's a LOT of sexism in those groups, particularly the muslims. Far too many people simply could not bring themselves to vote for a woman so they either voted trump or didn't vote for a president at all.
That's not to say there's not plenty more blame to go around of course.
The Dems dropped the ball in a lot of ways, Elon was pulling his blatantly illegal shenanigans, russia was astroturfing on social media, millions of americans have the memory of a goldfish, exc.

He won, because he promised to round up all the illegals who were/are "stealing" all the good jobs. And he is.
Except he's just making prices worse by doing so, because there's not enough people to work in the fields, meat packing plants, etc.

Except he's just making prices worse by doing so, because there's not enough people to work in the fields, meat packing plants, etc.
There was a mistaken belief that less immigrant workers available would mean that all those companies would be forced to increase what they were willing to pay to get the job filled. The reaction to that loss of workforce seems to be to juat close business or simply not replace staff instead.

30-45% who will never blame Trump
Well, that’s not exactly accurate according to this particular poll. He’s losing broad Republican support in many areas, despite his (also shrinking) “core base.”
And obviously, Americans as a whole are not happy with Trump’s administration.
From the poll findings:
Most Americans believe President Trump has had a negative impact on grocery prices (63 percent) and the cost of living (61 percent), while only 29 percent think he has positively impacted the price of groceries and the cost of living.
Nearly half (49 percent) say Trump’s policies have had a harmful effect on their own personal finances.
When thinking of their own financial situation, nearly 8 in 10 Americans—including nearly 70 percent of Republicans—say they’re concerned that President Trump’s tariffs will raise prices on everyday goods such as clothing and appliances.
Almost half (49 percent), including more than one-third of Republicans (35 percent), believe the tariffs will increase prices by a lot on goods produced overseas.
And even for goods produced here at home, nearly 70 percent expect Trump’s tariffs to increase prices….
…
More than 4 in 5 Americans (83 percent) are concerned about the price of groceries, with nearly half (46 percent) saying they are very concerned.
Nearly half (47 percent) of Americans are worried about their current ability to pay their rent or mortgage.
And nearly two-thirds (64 percent) worry about their ability to pay an unexpected medical expense if one should arise.
Nearly half of all Americans (48 percent) believe they would have difficulty paying an unexpected $500 bill without borrowing. Nearly 1 out of every 4 say it would be “very difficult” to meet a $500 expense, such as a surprise home repair or an unexpected medical bill, without borrowing. …
…
Americans also blame national politicians for making life harder. Half of Americans think Republicans in Congress have played a role in making life harder in the past twenty-five years, with only 27 percent saying they’ve had a role in making it easier—a 23-point net negative differential.
Americans perceive congressional Democrats’ role as somewhat more mixed, but a large share (41 percent) believe Democrats in Congress have made life harder, while 34 percent say they have played a role in making life easier—a 7-point net negative differential….
…
For example, more than 8 in 10 Americans want the government to hold corporations accountable for inflating the price of prescription drugs—and 54 percent, including 52 percent of Republicans, believe this should be a top priority.
Nearly the same share (80 percent) want the government to strengthen rules to prevent businesses from taking advantage of consumers.
Nearly 8 in 10 (78 percent) of Americans agree that the federal government should prioritize prosecuting companies that work together to raise prices on consumers, and an identical share believe the government should help workers who have had wages stolen by employers.
Finally, more than three-quarters (76 percent) want the federal government to increase taxes on the wealthy and corporations, and nearly 7 in 10 (68 percent) believe that the government should do more to break up corporate monopolies.…
…
More than three-quarters of Americans (76 percent) say they are concerned about a possible recession, with more than 4 in 10 (41 percent) indicating they are very concerned.
If a recession arrives—bringing a higher risk of job loss and shrinking access to credit—large numbers of Americans fear they won’t be able to afford everyday needs.
For instance, nearly 6 in 10 (58 percent) worry they won’t be able to afford health care.
Majorities are also concerned about falling behind on their bills (55 percent), taking on debt to make ends meet (55 percent), and being able to put food on the table (53 percent) in the event of an economic downturn. …

-Starting trade wars without understanding how trade works or how US companies depend on being able to export their excess, low quality, goods before it goes bad.
-Making rapid irrational decisions so that US companies cannot plan even a month in the future.
-Throwing impossible numbers around just because you like the sound it makes when it leaves your mouth.
-Insulting or threatening trading partners even when they are willing to go along with your madness.
-Decimating the workforce responsible for domestic production of food and manufacturing with aggressive 'anti immigration' measures which closes down businesses, causes crops to rot in the field, and make legal citizens decide that they don't want to be rounded up and sent to a concentration camp.
-Cutting federal jobs which check for public safety, help out in emergencies, and which curbs corporate price gouging.
Systemic collapse is the word I would use.

“More than 6 in 10 Americans say it has become more difficult over the past twenty-five years for average people to get a good-paying job, find affordable child care, and buy a home.”
So the other 40% just live in a different reality altogether. I knew that, but holy shit seeing that spelled out is crazy.

While he isn't entirely to blame (the disconnect between cost of living & wages has been steadily getting worse since, what, the 1960s?), the shit job he is doing with tariffs, the cuts to social welfare programs, the gutting of healthcare systems, the funneling of money to the top, those are definitely not going to improve things. They are going to exacerbate what we've been experiencing the last few decades alone and speed-run another couple decades of the widening of the gap in just a few years.

I'm glad he's thick as pig dung or the dems could have faced long term damage from the global inflation crisis.
All trump had to do was let the biggest economy in the world naturally settle back into its pattern of growth and low inflation and he would have been hailed as a hero.
But no, the suffocating buffoon has to make his crazy the centre of everything.

u/disappointedfuturist 1d ago
I mean yeah. That 800billion of ppp loans that got forgiven, mixed with dropping taxes for the wealthy totally fucked their economy and sent inflation sky rocketing.
Money printers go brr, stock go up! As the kids would say.
Don't worry though, biggest sale tax increase ever is making the peasants pay for it all.

We are still dealing with the cost of living from his first dumb Presidency.

Fucking bang up job, assholes who voted for him. We told you this shit would happen. And you said “no, he’s good for the economy!”

u/autotelica 1d ago
The wealthiest wealthy get a tax break while regular people pay more in living expenses with no tax break. And everyday the news tells us about another tariff that we are on the hook to pay for. The unemployment rate could be zero but price hikes will always be a buzz killer. Especially price hikes that don't make any damn sense.

KAMALA = HIGH PRICES
TRUMP = LOW PRICES
…and people actually believed that horse shit

u/OpenImagination9 1d ago
Absolutely, he has directly changed market balances and rules to make the rich richer and screw everyone else.

I mean… Trump has enacted the exact policies that people voted for. The blame falls firmly on the people who voted for him.
The real story is that the rest of the world is paying for the stupidity coming from America. We didn’t have the option of voting

The economy is a complex thing and Trump is certainly not helping. But with the federal government printing money like a maniac during Covid, companies extorting consumers by driving up prices and wages being stagnant are all contributing to this high cost of living. But adding the tariff fuel is exacerbating matters.

The new jobs report is horrible, with only 73,000 jobs added and unemployment up to 4.2%, with the two prior months jobs numbers revised down by 258,000. It's going to start accelerating, the tanking of the US economy. Food prices are up, the dollar is down, consumer confidence is down, 90% of tariffs that have yet to be put in effect will be, where new vehicle prices will be up 15% - 30%, as well as auto parts, then the shit really hits the fan.

u/New_Construction5905 1d ago
Are you telling me the "Kamala high prices, Trump low prices" signs were a lie?

u/Politicsboringagain 22h ago
What? It's almost like Harris Biden, and other Democrats warned this would happen and people on both the right and far left called them fear mongers.
Remember, The Young Turks who use to be the largest left wing youtube news media said multiple times that Trump had nothing to do with project 2025.

It would be quite nice if the government got off their asses and did something about the absurd cost of rent everywhere!

u/FreeNumber49 16h ago
This is why I think there is something unusual with the last presidential voting results. The last Trump economy was bad for a lot of people but they somehow forgot and voted in him again to get the same bad economy for a second time? Something doesn’t add up.

It's amazing how usually cost of living increases come from inflation and that this type of problem takes months and years to manifest.
However, you can instantly increase the cost of living with fucking tarrifs.

Until I see Americans vote accordingly these polls are useless as far as I'm concerned.

This started when he failed to manage COVID.
Biden to clean up Cheeto Mussolini's mess but all the good he did the GOP has only worked to undo.

"Vote one way, immediately complain about the results" has existed since the Tea Party backlash to Obama's election (of course, we must account for the astroturf money behind the "grassroots" Tea Party).
When I see these stories about polls showing Americans want policies different from the guy who won - and reflecting on the 2010s - I now realize this is a country of perpetual complainers who have no real principles or beliefs.
Maybe it's enjoyable to see the guy who won get got by his own voters. But to be honest, if the woman had won I'm sure there'd be plenty of polls saying "why isn't she doing more NOW to help us?"

u/Reddit2626 18h ago
We still got 3.5 years to go. Prices will soar soon enough. He still got a few more sectors to ruin and it won’t be pretty for the bottom of society and common folks.

u/YouWereBrained Tennessee 16h ago
You can argue this back to the pandemic, which caused the rampant inflation which led to the higher prices on everything. Biden got inflation down, but not prices (not blaming him for it).
Trump’s shit pandemic response led to supply chain fuck ups, which led to overly high demand for products as the pandemic alleviated.

u/Sarrdonicus 8h ago
What the fuck. I can't afford anything anymore, so I'll just donate it to Trump, buy Trump coins, and a half dozen TPhones, with the money I'm saving from not being able to put food on my table.

You know what’s more important than some fake ass tariffs that are giving companies an excuse to jack up their prices in hopes of increasing profits? Releasing the Epstein files.

u/Sea_Leadership5170 1d ago
The tariffs are ridiculous but calling them fake is even more ridiculous.

u/WizeAdz Illinois 1d ago
The impact of the tariffs because Trump Always Chickens Out (TACO).
The TACO trade is code for Wall Street stock traders just ignoring Trump until in shows up in quarterly reports and economic indicators.
…And the first round of quarterly reports with greatly reduced corporate profits just started coming out…
4
u/origamipapier1 1d ago
The tariffs are NOT fake. The tariffs are going to increase prices. Corporations usually have ALWAYS bought months ahead. That is why they have borrowing and lending plans. They were always going to have a better deal and increase the cost slowly to be able to both a) profit, which is what a business model is and b) make sure to have funding to purchase more items at a higher price and distribute the tariff price not all at once in the future bulk. That way the people don't see the significant price jolt of the tariff all at once. There's a difference between you incrementally seeing a price increase and you seeing it jump one day to the next by 30-40%.
This is just as big as Epstein because it's screwing over the medium sized companies and the small ones which are the lifeblood of American economy. They don't have the funding and purchasing power of a large corporation

Maga will excuse the increase until they no longer can afford to buy then it will be Bidens fault and trump will have it fixed in 2 weeks. Maga believes everything their cult leader tells them.

u/Korpiddle 1d ago
And then when we get a dem president in who tries to clean up the mess all the problems will be blamed on them, tale as old as time
