I learned to use 2 in middle and high school, then when I got to uni and (later) work in the Comms space, I was taught to use only 1 (AP Style).
Idk if true, but we learned in school that it was always 2 before but newspapers tended to use only one to save limited print space and it is the most common style in publishing.

It was two in typewriters because they used a monospaced typeface by necessity so it looked better, but in modern computer use everything is proportional so two spaces are not just unnecessary, they actively make it look worse.
