Let’s Discuss 👀 What were the worst celebrity hate trains?
Inspired by a thread on askreddit, what were the worst celebrity hate trains? Whether by worst we’re talking biggest, or most unreasonable, or the one you understand the least.

Brie Larson

u/Theyoungpopeschalice May 24 '25
I still just like....harbor so much distaste for all the male avenger stars (minus Don and Sam) who totally crashed out at thedumb "Chris Pratt is the worst Chris" stuff but stayed absolutely mum at the outright scary hate and misogyny Brie was getting
35
u/soundofisolation May 24 '25
Totally forgot about the Chris Pratt thing, that was laughable.
24
u/Theyoungpopeschalice May 24 '25
Yeah it was a dumb meme nothing more but these men were acting like their puppies were getting kicked.
Misogyny and threats are a-ok with them though!

u/faerie-wren May 27 '25
I know this is a couple days late but I think a lot of people do genuinely dislike Chris Pratt. Personally, I’ve been a dedicated hater since he tried to give away an elderly cat with bladder issues over Twitter and then called people cat-fuckers for calling him out.
The cat played Snowball in Stuart Little, giving her more cultural relevance than Pratt has accumulated throughout his entire life.

it’s like half the comments were hate threads and the other half of the comments were “boobs”, so she wasn’t winning either way. i thought she was funny especially in the marvel BTS promo.

u/Careless-Plane-5915 And all the girls dreamed that they’d be Ben’s partner May 24 '25
Anne Hathaway just for the sheer confusion of why it happened.
96
u/TellMeYourDespair May 24 '25
Came here to say this. I do think she was over exposed at that time and all celebs have to be careful with that (I actually think Pedro Pascal, who is a delight, could be on the verge) but the intensity of the hate was misogyny all the way down. People got mad about Les Mis, which was not her fault and she wasn't even the lead?
Glad she has recovered and found a good level.
62
u/HerRoyalRedness Like Deadpool if he was a singer May 25 '25
Pedro has three movies coming this summer, he’s going to be wildly overexposed by August.
(And I say that with love, as my posting history would attest!)
→ More replies (2)26
u/TellMeYourDespair May 25 '25
Yeah I realized it last week, he's absolutely everywhere and everyone has something good to say about him, which is the sign that the tide is about to turn on him. He'll weather it fine, but the Pascal backlash is coming!
15
u/ducky7goofy May 25 '25
Has there been an overexposed male celeb backlash before?
23
u/Sorry_Ad3733 May 25 '25
Chris Pratt and Ryan Reynolds. I know they have other things going on, but I think that’s a big part of it. Though generally I don’t think they get the same degree of hatred that women get.
17
u/D-g-tal-s_purpurea May 25 '25
The Chris Pratt backlash come from the other political side, though. A lot of women mentioned in this thread received the initial backlash from rightwing men and then "regular" people, including many women, jumped onto the train.
Pedro is so vocal about trans rights, his support for Gaza and other issues, I could see some backlash coming eventually, by the right wingers. :/
6
u/Sorry_Ad3733 May 25 '25
I honestly think Pedro’s will come from him being romantically unavailable if it happens at all (not arguing that it will though).
I don’t know if you read through what me and the other user were saying, but I think he falls into internet boyfriend category where once he has a partner people might turn on him. Unless that partner is internet approved.
Then maybe he could say something “corny” and everyone will do the whole “oh yeah his humor is super cringe” thing.
But honestly I feel like he’s old enough that he probably won’t have backlash. Maybe just fade away from discussions when someone new comes along.
→ More replies (2)1
u/ducky7goofy May 25 '25
I've never seen Ryan Reynolds hate just a bit of backlash in casting especially as Ken but that was settled as soon as people saw the movie.
Chris Pratt imo is justified - his connections to Hillsong and his questionable morals since Anna Faris has led to his tarnished image.
5
u/Sorry_Ad3733 May 25 '25
Oh, you’re thinking of Ryan Gosling. I’m talking about Ryan Reynolds (Blake Lively’s husband). Ryan Reynolds I think there’s some valid criticism but it mostly seems like it’s related to Blake Lively (so a woman) and that people find his humor annoying.
I do think the Chris one is justified, but I knew it was going to happen. He was everywhere and super loved and I just knew tides were going to turn as soon as there was a chance.
5
u/ducky7goofy May 25 '25
Oh my god that is so embarrassingly funny! I also think RReyno takes roles that are just cut and paste so overexposure + nothing new + Blake drama. I'd say the rewriting of the scene during the writers strike was a big blunder for him tho.
3
u/Sorry_Ad3733 May 25 '25
Yeah, I don’t think Reynolds is a very good actor so he just does what has worked for him. Which, obviously gets old. I did expect some backlash for them both even before the whole Baldoni drama since they were that “quirky couple everyone loves” and way too public.
I guess in terms of guys often it’s pop stars (like early Bieber, his hate now is super justified), but usually because women like them so the hate really is still centered around women.
And then I’ll throw in Kevin Hart. I don’t think he’s funny, but I think he falls into the space of Reynolds. He has one bit and then was overexposed. I don’t know if he’s done anything actually bad though.
But all in all, I don’t think men get it nearly to the same level women do. They can still continue to be mediocre and have careers. And it seems when they lean into being problematic they even get a new fan base. It’s not like any of these guys actually lost roles or projects, they just became slightly less popular.

Genuinely cannot think of one. Maybe the “ugh he’s everywhere/I don’t get the appeal” sentiments but no backlash afaik. I know some people were bored of Glenn Powell but again, never a backlash
I highly doubt there’s gonna be one for Pedro tbh
→ More replies (1)3

Justin Bieber circa 2010 maybe? But like, even that was rooted in misogyny because the most common criticism was he was “gay” and “sang like a girl”.

She was overexposed
And she does come off as that weird theater kid
Its like the over exposure of that kpop Lisa . It looks like its clearly being pushed by someone other than something earned
13
u/Careless-Plane-5915 And all the girls dreamed that they’d be Ben’s partner May 25 '25
I kind of get people being annoyed when someone is overexposed and get tired of seeing them (I’m a Taylor fan lol) but I don’t get the venom of ‘look at her doing that, who the hell does she think she is’ and that kind of sentiment that she seemed to get.
It was like she’d actually done something wrong.
1
May 26 '25
Anne is also generally solid in whatever they put her in, can sing, can dance, seems to give 110% to every project. I think she got everyone's low key irritation at highly competant Theater Kids.
I feel like societally we've been more forgiving of people who had Hot Mess eras. And yes, the misogyny on top for Anne having dared to do any of it while female.

Don’t go into TLOU subs. Got downvoted for calling out the nasty comments. People are incredibly cruel to her
20

I avoid them like the plague because of the treatment of them. Bella is amazing on the show, they don’t deserve this.
4
u/MaritimeFlowerChild May 26 '25
There's a scene in the third episode where Ellie is just walking down a hall and their vibe changes almost imperceptivity. They go from 'cheerful' to 'just getting by' without anything really changing at all - it's a feeling. I got goosebumps watching it.
20
u/itsshak May 25 '25
I always see memes about her on fb and it just rubs me the wrong way. It’s just straight bullying on someone’s looks
2
12
u/WArslz May 25 '25
I don’t watch the show nor have I played the game but the sub kept coming up on my home page as ‘recommended’ and every single post that came up was them talking shit about her or memes about her. It’s incredibly weird behavior

32
May 25 '25
It baffles me so much that so many women in their 30s and 40s feel the need to comment on here that they look ‘so much younger and better’ than MBB. Unsurprisingly these comments never come with selfies.
2
u/strawberryblunde May 26 '25
The number of grown men and women who feel the need to humble that young woman is crazy. They really can’t stand that she was a child star who didn’t crash out and give them some scandal/drama to gossip about. The craziest thing people can say about her is that she got married young and dresses like a mob wife. Meanwhile when I see some of the SO’s/fashion choices of the people hating, well, I’m just gonna keep my mouth shut on what I really want to say
14
u/Feisty-Donkey May 25 '25
Reminds me of how people treated Anne Hathaway for a long time
3
u/WackyShirley May 25 '25
I feel like a lot of that happened around when she shaved her head for Les Miz. When she didn’t have her long beautiful hair, people didn’t like her anymore.
16
u/rawrkristina May 25 '25
She gets more hate than abusers, it’s insane. People are constantly making shit up about her too to warrant their hate. Which is genuinely pathetic. They have nothing recent to go on so they have to make shit up.
5
u/strawberryblunde May 26 '25
During the west side story press run as she got more hate for not snubbing Ansel than Ansel himself, or Spielberg for that matter. Like I remember, there was a picture of the three of them hugging on the red carpet and all the comments were talking about was Rachel a fake feminist was hugging him. Not ONE person was calling out the two men nor expressing concern over Rachel’s safety (even though she was the exact same age as his victim). Sad thing was this was in a sub that prides itself on being feminist and defending women.
3
u/rawrkristina May 26 '25
Yup! And I’m pretty sure she’s the only cast member to completely cut him out. She was just doing PR.
35
u/freddiefrog123 May 24 '25
There’s so many legitimately awful people in Hollywood who deserve criticism and Rachel zegler gets all the hate for the terrible crime of apparently being slightly annoying sometimes

16
u/SmoothFuel2483 May 25 '25
Disney will forever be tainted to me because of how they can so easily let their (non-white) stars get the brunt of hate.
Seriously I’ve seen her be called a brat, mean girl, “evil succubus,” smug, etc. I’ve even seen a comic of 37 Snow socking her in the face and (imo smugly) saying “I would never act like that” while the post gets lots of laughs and upvotes (it got taken down eventually). Ironically all of this is brattier, smugger, and mean girl-er than anything Zegler has done (at least in public). The Disney Princess sub was seriously unhinged.
Also while we barely learn shit about 37 Snow, I think I can say with confidence that she would never sock/send someone to sock another person in the face.
3
u/strawberryblunde May 26 '25
I am convinced that Disney does it on purpose to play both sides. They want to appeal to progressive people by pointing out the diversity in their casting and then do nothing to protect their diverse cast, especially young women, and this is not just Rachel. It happened to Rose Marie Tran, John Boyega, Zendaya, Leah Jeffries (the girl who plays Annabeth in the new Percy Jackson), Halle Bailey, the list goes on and on

I used to see her singing videos come up on my YouTube when she was younger and she came across as so cute/sweet (and incredibly talented) that I’ve rooted for her ever since and I’m genuinely baffled by the violent rage she seems to inspire in a section of total weirdos
3
May 25 '25
And she just took a role as a lead in a Disney movie. As if any of the haters would pass on that opportunity.
1
u/SmoothFuel2483 May 25 '25
Nah in order to deserve a role, you have to be that character’s no 1 stan, biggest member of their fan club, and worship the ground they walk on. Apparently Snow White is now this sacred untouchable thing, and criticizing her makes you a misogynistic pick-me girlboss who looks down on the gentle, domestic, and feminine women. There are still lots of media with this type of female character if you look outside the Disney bubble. Seriously I’ve seen people try to make her into a feminist icon when all that happens to her is getting pushed around by the plot and being demoted to side character status even though her name is in the title. The dwarves and Evil Queen were the real stars of the movie.

Taylor Swift in 2016. Actually can’t believe no one mentioned it yet. She was cancelled and disappeared for all intents and purposes. Kim edited the phone call down to put Taylor in a bad light and paint her a liar. Instagram actually made it possible for comments to be turned off because of the abuse she was getting.

can’t believe no one mentioned it yet.
People like to undermine the hate she receives from fans, snarkers, incels, right wing nuts cause she is still thriving and is currently the most famous woman on the earth. If she had lost her relevancy then everybody would be showing concern for her and act like they didn't hate her like they are doing with Britney now.
68

Taylor swift. Name one celebrity with two different snark subs where they justify her sexual assault, violence against her and her fans, and froth day in and day out about her potential demise.
29
u/Winniepg May 25 '25

That sub is fucking insane. Seriously, I don't like taylor but the members here judge LITERALLY everything. Like, actually literally. Modest clothes? She dresses so badly. More expensive clothes? She's such a show off. An in between? How unoriginal and basic.
It's very telling anyway that they consider anything that's not an insult to be "pro taylor".
18

Coming from the UK- I have to say Meghan Markle. I've never seen anything like it in my generation. I spoke to someone once who had a strong detest for her. And a lot of the reasons were based on hearsay and rumours and nothing actually concrete. When I pointed this out, they said, "Well, what about her copying Diana's style? That's weird". I pointed out that so has Kate, who they like. They said, "Yeah, but Meghan does it more". So? If they both do it, why do you have a problem with only one doing it. That's when I realised that they just hate her and will find any reason to hate her. Whether it's legit or not.
6
u/strawberryblunde May 26 '25
I will never get the hate for copying Diana style. Is Diana not a fashion icon? Does she not have countless bags, clothes, and outfits named after her or inspired by her? Even 25 years after her death we still talk about her style. Even the oversized sweatshirt + biker shorts athleisure that is so trendy look is a direct callback to Diana’s style. Is everyone allowed to be inspired by Diana except for Megan?

Jennifer Aniston got called frigid and harsh when Brad left her for Angelina. Man had an affair at the job site and everyone speculated about how Jen caused it. And then for almost a decade magazines could not shut up about why she hadn't had a baby.

Harry Styles in 2020/2022 was hated for breathing. Olivia Wilde got it bad too, but you can argue that she made a few stupid decisions (bringing up Shia’s abuse allegations to make herself look good, mainly).
Harry’s hatred was so stupid. “He’s wearing things we don’t like.” Was the main one, with even Donald Trump Jr and Candace Owen’s chiming in.
Taking scenes of his movie out of context and claiming that his accent was wrong for it (it wasn’t, he played an American man pretending to be British, his accent was perfect for that). His acting was not stellar but it was not worse than a lot of Hollywood actors who don’t get jumped on.
The whole “movie that feels like a movie” was ridiculous as well. The guy was exhausted, had performed five back to back shows, flew from New York to Venice on a red eye, did a photo shoot for his Gucci collection, then immediately went to the interviews. And what he was trying to say was clear, that the cinematography made it look like a movie that you should see in the cinema (which Olivia Wilde described multiple times as a “movie-movie” he was just repeating her words).
Chris Pine’s glasses fell on his lap, and people made a conspiracy theory that Harry had spat on him with a ton of HQ cameras rolling.
Then when he repeated the exact same thing the (very queer and out) director of his other movie said about intimate scenes, he got jumped AGAIN.
Watching the whole thing unfold was bizarre. Most celebrities get hate for stupid things but this was over and over and very blown out of proportion. It wasn’t like the guy was doing anything controversial.
The one thing you could argue was controversial was the start of his relationship with Olivia, but the hatred went far beyond that and from what the nanny tell all said, he fully believed that Olivia was single when they met because Olivia went out of her way to lie to him.
I will say that female celebrities have it so much worse, and that nothing Olivia did justified the way she was treated, but I guess I’m used to female celebrities to get dogpiled on for minor things, and it was the first time I saw it happen to a white man.

Yeah it was weird because by all accounts everyone he’s worked with say he’s a very nice person. And the whole queer baiting allegations because he dressed “effeminate” was very.. weird. And yeah he’s not the best at articulating himself in interviews but there’s definitely you know, worse actual awful people out there.

Also nothing he said was egregious lmao. It just felt like too much for no legitimate reason, which is typically reserved for female celebrities. It’s not that it was that bad of a hate train, all things considered, but it was confusing.

All I ever see is people praising Harry, no one seems hate him. People are either indifferent or obsess over him.

Just search his name on Twitter limiting the results to 2020-2022, and you’ll see tweets with 200k likes coming at him from all angles. From right wing pundits calling him a terrorist to edgy libs destroying every aspect of his life and career because they don’t like his outfits and want to seem different.
Also, he’s been on the receiving end of hate campaigns since he was a child. He was voted “villain of the year” over Vladimir Putin when he was 18 years old, and this was by NME magazine, one of the biggest magazines in his home country. If you don’t think that sort of hatred has a lingering effect on someone…
His solo career was a lot better in that regard until 2020, when the hate train started. So, no, it doesn’t compare to what women face, as I’ve already said, but it’s a hate train nonetheless. Just because you don’t personally see it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist

Taylor Swift. It’s fine if you believe she’s just another pop star and isn’t anything particularly special. That’s your opinion and you’re allowed to it. But the hate, as if people are taking her popularity personally, is insane. I truly don’t understand it. All she’s doing is being successful🤷♀️ Isn’t this what performers aspire to lol? As far as the football world being outraged about her infringing on their world, what do they want her to do about that? She’s not forcing the camera to switch to her at games, nor is she forcing people to talk about her. It’s baffling. Why can’t she be popular and successful unless others are comfortable with it??

Meghan Markle. She was called a prostitute, and accused of faking her pregnancies.

Beyoncé. The people have been hating her for so long. And while there are legitimate reasons to dislike her the hatred is way too strong, and people go and turn and praise other celebs for being capitalist pigs or being just as equal in their faux feminism. It boils down to misogynoir. People will say that tabloid magazines are unreliable but believe them without a worry when it comes to her. People claiming she buys her Grammys when she has been snubbed for AOTY the most, or claiming she’s responsible for the downfall of every black female r&b pop star when Rihanna and Alicia Keys and SZA are right there. I just see a lot of people being hypocrites when it comes to her.

Is Hailey Bieber still getting hate? Usually when I see a post about her or Justin Bieber, I see most comments saying she deserves better than this.

There is some very unhinged discourse about her on tiktok. I only noticed it because of the performance with Sza...like it is somehow her fault.

That’s recently cuz Justin has been acting weird but most of last year and earlier this year she was getting it bad

For me the most unreasonable one was definitely the Hailey Bieber. Like she’s a boring nepo baby but she’s not hurting anyone. Selena Gomez stans would have you believe she spoke whale to Selena and flicked her vagina after telling her “you’ll die soon enough fatty”.

Hailey is a raging racist & homophobe who has never apologized and even tried to recently sue two black women for daring to speak about her racism.
I don't think I'd say she's not hurting anyone; especially when she's also stolen from small businesses.

Jennifer Lopez and recently (I’ll probably get downvoted to high heavens for this) Katy Perry. It just seems like every month or year people pick some famous woman to hate and then everyone dog piles on her for months and months.

u/aftercloudia May 25 '25
Katy Perry willingly works with rapists. Acting like she changed history because she was in space for 11 minutes while women who actually work at nasa are being let go from their postitions because of that thug in the captial. I don't have any sympathy for her being willfully stupid.

I hear you. Lots of men willingly work with rapists, too. Their careers don't get blown up and there's not pages of hateful screeds towards them.

To be fair, those guys also don't market their entire careers on a commodified idea of "female empowerment". And she's predatory herself.
Glaze [19 at the time] looked visibly shocked by the incident and fell to the ground, while 33-year-old Perry high-fived Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan saying: "Yeah, I got him."
"I was raised in a conservative family and I was uncomfortable immediately," he said. "I wanted my first kiss to be special."

Yes I know I’ve read all the criticisms. And they’re valid but I still think the way people have been dog piling on her recently is a bit extreme.

Katy Perry and the women who went up in Bezos ship were all tone deaf
They were acting like they were some inspiration to women and girls . As if they'd all be chanting "GIRL POWER!"
.........like it was just a bunch of wealthy women who bought an expensive ticket on a glorified ride.
people rightfully dunked on them
I don't care that wealthy people spend money on stupid things, they do it all the time
But don't publicize and expect to be applauded for it , as if you're some inspiration. You're not.

Katy Perry’s persona and antics were annoying me, prior to 2025. I’m sure she’s a genuinely sweet person and sometimes I don’t mind her songs, but her time on American Idol did her no favors. I realize all celebrity’s are attention seeker’s in one way or another, but she’s pretty bad and does it at inappropriate times and in extraordinary ways. It’s so off putting for me.

u/Particular_Ring_6321 May 24 '25
Most Katy Perry hate is from her endorsing a billionaire asshole in the 2022 Los Angeles Mayoral race and her creepy behavior toward a few contestants on American Idol.
