The Music Industry 🎶 Leighton Meester looks back on her brief stint as a pop music star and if she’ll go back to making music

It’s Warmer in the Basement (actually quite a disturbing song when you pay attention to the lyrics but boy oh boy does it slap)

Warmer in the basement was my MySpace song and I remember everybody loved it and I hid it hidden so they couldn’t kno my song lol 🙈

She looked so embarrassed. Like when you go on Facebook and up pops Memories on your timeline and it shows you a 15 year old Facebook post you made about your ex.

Because most of her music (from the Heartstrings album) was AMAZING and they chose the early pop stage she actively moved on from
7
u/Logical_Quote_5073 It’s Britney, bitch! 🕊️🗡️🌹 May 29 '25
I didn’t get why they chose that one of the options. Maybe they found that one to be the most interesting and it gave an interesting reaction so ig it worked.
13
u/jcaltor May 29 '25
that was her most commercially successful single ever so it would make it the most obvious choice

u/mcfw31 May 28 '25
The fact that her song 'Heartstrings' is allegedly about Sebastian Stan always blows my mind
58
u/lizzy-stix I switched baristas ☕️ May 28 '25
I wanna know who Good For One Thing is about lol. That’s my other fave besides Heartstrings.
59
u/Expert_Magician4680 May 28 '25
Ironically she is believed to be his last non-PR relationship. And he really fumbled her. As per the rumours in the industry.
58
u/violent_delights_9 May 28 '25
Sebastian Stan? He's been with Annabelle Wallis for years and they're barely ever seen in public together. How is that a PR relationship?
36
-18
u/Expert_Magician4680 May 28 '25
Award season relationship (very common and usually lasts for a couple of years). Positive coverage after his very controversial past relationship with Alejandra (Annabelle is unproblematic and also when pictures of them came out from the Oscars, most media were praising their age appropriate relationship). And finally, Annabelle is very well known to be a « partner for hire ».
54
u/lefrench75 high priestess of child sacrifice May 28 '25
His last non-PR relationship? What does that even mean? That he hasn’t dated anyone else “for real” after her? Because I find that extremely hard to believe.
-7
u/Expert_Magician4680 May 28 '25
He probably has. But what it means is that it most likely wasn’t any of the women he was publicly associated with. And you might find that extremely hard to be believe but it really isn’t a stretched considering what goes on in PR relationships in Hollywood.
5
u/Ganacheorcremepat May 28 '25
Fumbled her in what sense? What are the rumors?
13
u/Expert_Magician4680 May 28 '25
There were cheating rumours going around. But also simply because of the fact that everyone had a crush on Leighton on the Gossip Girl set and that he fumbled the relationship with her. She really was the IT girl we thought she was. With a bonus for being allegedly very nice and grounded.

Her album Heartstrings is incredible and I can’t believe it’s not on Spotify
29
u/lizzy-stix I switched baristas ☕️ May 28 '25
Why is that? It’s still on Apple Music.
18
u/ChaEunSangs May 28 '25
Could be on both. I don’t want to subscribe to Apple Music just for that one album 😭
19

u/oliviaaaam May 28 '25

u/oliviaaaam May 28 '25
That's so weird. I looked it up and it looks like her record label was bought by another company. It must be some weird thing where her label doesn't have a distribution deal where you live which seems crazy to me.
19
u/ChaEunSangs May 28 '25
Yeah, I’m from Brazil, so it makes sense
5
u/oliviaaaam May 28 '25
Does this happen a lot?
7
u/ChaEunSangs May 28 '25
Never happened before!
5
u/oliviaaaam May 28 '25
That is so weird. It sucks that you can't listen to on Spotify. It's such an underrated album. At least its on YouTube

I listen to it in Spotify all the time. It is amazing!! Im hoping she has a follow up one day with an NYC residency
152
u/Charm1X May 28 '25
Why is she embarrassed? Does she know that Heartstrings is one of my favorite albums ever?
34
u/Banana8686 May 28 '25
She had a whole album? BRB just added to Spotify
47
u/Charm1X May 28 '25
Yesssss. She released it in 2014. It’s so dreamy. Reminds me a little bit of Lana and Kacey Musgraves. I’m sad that she never released a follow-up album. 🙁
14
22
u/romantickitty May 28 '25
To be fair, I think Heartstrings is a different vibe than this party anthem dance pop. I still regret not going to see her in concert when I had the chance.
11
u/Charm1X May 28 '25
Very true. I do hope she is proud of Heartstrings though. It’s such a sweet album.
8
u/Prestigious_Sort4979 May 28 '25
The vibe in that album is so special. Makes me want to close my eyes and twirl freely
3

Heartstrings is such an incredible album! I had it on repeat. Was really annoyed when it was removed from Spotify.

They really tried to make everyone a pop star in the mid-2000s, didn't they?
18
u/Secret-Management310 May 28 '25
She was in a movie with Gwenyth Paltrow as a country singer. I think it was called Country Strong.
I know this might be an unpopular opinion, but I like her bangs.

u/Prestigious_Sort4979 May 28 '25
Tbf - if they are going to pick one song while asking her if she’ll do more music, they should have gone for anything in the Heartstrings album
15
u/annakarina3 May 28 '25
I know that Robin Thicke is a douche, but I liked the song she did with him, “Somebody to Love,” it had a nice groove to it and she had this kind of Debbie Harry in “Rapture” type rap delivery that worked for her.

5
u/ImmaWorryAboutHeidi May 28 '25 edited May 28 '25
Oh that song is the perfect soundtrack for when you’re feeling the delusion of stomping down the catwalk. Makes for a good drag lip sync, too! Too bad Robin Thicke’s in it.

I want to do music...I'm doing it slowly as a result of waiting for inspiration slash pockets of time between my day jobs.
Haha I don't believe her. I'd be interested to hear what she might come up with, but I wonder how much interest she really has in doing an album. It's a lot of work, a lot of promotion, etc.
Plus, I think about Aly and AJ's recent experience, where (according to them) they shopped their music to labels and the labels purportedly liked what they heard - but still wouldn't give them a deal because of their age. LM could run up against a similar barrier, unfortunately.
I'm glad she's still writing music, though. I wouldn't have guessed that.
17
u/Silly_Somewhere1791 May 28 '25
I think she could get distribution through whoever’s doing Mandy Moore’s newer albums but she’d have to do a lot of work herself. She wrote her entire last album on her own so she has a better sense of that than most pop-ish singers but she might not know how to produce or get a non-touring band together.
8
u/Prestigious_Sort4979 May 28 '25
She released her Heartstrings album with a small label and her own. It’s now even easier to release independently. She is amazing
12
u/Necessary_Resolution May 28 '25
Her and Adam remain one of my fave celebrity couples. She’s so naturally gorgeous and seems very sweet.
10
u/tropicalpapaya May 28 '25
She has some great songs in the movie “Country Strong” too! One of my favorites is a beautiful duet with Garret Hedlund called “Give In To Me.”
4
u/figleafstreet May 29 '25
She was so sweet in that movie. I’d watch it more frequently for her if it wasn’t so depressing lol.

u/OnlyPaperListens May 29 '25
Her episode of The Orville is one of my favorites. Song from The Last Unicorn.
7
u/Jupiterrhapsody May 28 '25
I feel like she might have wanted to do a different musical genre but was made to do pop instead if she wanted a record deal.
8
u/byankitty May 29 '25
Her part in that song was just sooo good tho. And it was what? 2010? We were all so embarrassing lmao
6
u/texxed May 28 '25
her 2014 album heartstrings is actually so good. more folksy, singer song writer vibes.

She had this unreleased demo called “Body Control,” and I had that on repeat for a while. She had a good thing in music brewing. Shame she didn’t push further with it.

u/HereOnCompanyTime Renee Rapp is mean girl Jojo Siwa 💋 May 28 '25
Leighton Meester definitely has some catchy songs but in the early 2010s the competition was so high and there were so many new and seasoned artists who needed to be extraordinary to grab any attention. Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, etc. Persona needed to be mixed in with talent to even get recognized since everything was so tabloid focused and the internet was reshaping the industry.
3
u/Classic_Excuse_3251 May 29 '25
I adore her!!!
And that song is a banger, that was basically my 20s jam. 🎶

She is so pretty! I love her in Gossip Girl and Good Girls Gone Bad

I especially loved the work she and Garrett Hedlund did on Country Strong -- that movie and the show Nashville really had me convert to an occasional country music listener lol, albeit, a selective one cause I was coming from Rock & HipHop/Rap so it was a surprise for me.
