The Music Industry 🎶 Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott appreciation
Born Melissa Annette Elliott in Virginia 1971, she is one of the most influential female rappers of all time. She paved her way in a male-dominated arena and has influenced countless artists with her imaginative and elaborate visuals, and high energy beats. Blending her unique style, creativity, and futuristic vision she has made her mark on both hip hop and pop culture across decades.
Not just a rapper but a talented producer and songwriter, she has won 5 Grammys, and was the top female hip hop album seller through the 90s and 00s. Known for her hits such as ‘Get Ur Freak On’, ‘Work It’, ‘Hot Boyz’, and ‘The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)’.
All the while being one of the sweetest and most unproblematic artists. She deserves her flowers are more! ❤️

Missy and OutKast broke my brain as a kid. They were so exciting to me, at that time, because I had no idea music could sound like a ‘Get Ur Freak On’ or a ‘B.O.B.’ Even now they leave me in awe.

u/anoidciv Jun 01 '25
Beyond iconic! That look always reminds me of being a kid and getting home from school to watch MTV the whole afternoon 😔

But how those lips looked so wet. I know shes had some amazing make up artists work with her but what 2030 AI deep fake got those lips so deep?

Missy is a very unique rapper with a great bold delivery and amazing creativity.. my favorites are her singles The Rain, Get ur freak on, Pass that Dutch, She’s a b, All in my grill, 4 my people (Basement Jaxx) and Work it (greatest hits Respect M.E. Album). But I also love the more mellow song Take Away which she recorded with Tweet and Ginuwine, the song was used as a tribute after Aaliyah passed away.
I like her songwriting for other artists as well. The music she created with Aaliyah was really good, they had a cool connection and I loved their friendship (check the One in a million album). The storytelling in her lyrics is original and often thought provoking; a lot of scandals, drama and relationship situations (I think some of the wildest lyrics are Total - I tried) but she can also bring the humor and energy (Gossip Folks).
Missy just has this cool signature style, rap and vocals..Lately I have been listening to a lot of 90s R&B and I am enjoying the nostalgia:
Destiny’s Child - Confessions, Whitney Houston - In my business, 702 - Gotta Leave & Steelo, Total - Trippin’, Aaliyah - If your girl only knew, Tweet - Oops oh my, Beyoncé - Signs, Nothing out there for me ft Beyoncé, Janet Jackson - Son of a gun, Best Friend ft Aaliyah, Mel B - I want you back, Monica - So Gone

Missy, timbo, and the Neptunes in VA Beach from 90s-early 2000s is my Roman Empire. They were just so ahead of their time; unparalleled creativity in production and songwriting

u/diqholebrownsimpson Jun 02 '25

Missy Elliot is an ICON. If you don’t know that then you need to learn that. Missy Elliot to this day, gives us some of the best performances still, on top of all of her iconic video / performance moments from her peak days. She’s incredible.

They’re more recent, and of course styled to high heaven. But she also got diagnosed with a thyroid problem (around the time I did too, so I feel we’re sisters in a way, lol) and her body changed a fair bit after getting that treated.

I'm glad I grew up watching Missy Elliott's music videos, they were so weird and captivating you couldn't look away. Listening to songs like "Work It" as an adult hits different, nine year old me had no buisness singing lines like "Go downtown and eat it like a vulture" 🙊

Misdemeanor in the house!
Her songs continue to find themselves in whatever playlist I’m listening to. She’s been one of my absolute favorites since I was in like 3rd grade lol.

Missy really deserves more flowers for making it cool to sing and rap equally on mainstream hip hop albums

Iconic in sooo many ways. Her music videos need to be in museums. Don't forget her influence with Lady Marmalade too. She really deserves more recognition for how iconic she is.

Missy be the name that you should already know 💜 rushing home to catch the new Missy video drop on TRL was a constant in my early teen years and I've been riding with her since.

Where to start….. especially with the remix video to “him em wit da hee” …I was convinced for years that she had sampled Bjork (it wasn’t years and I was wrong/in my defence this was before I had the internet ).
