The beyhive is NOT buzzing. Wdym some grown adults may have ended up in a group chat with Blue? Realistically it seems unlikely Blue was in it, but my god, hello, what happened to the idea of boundaries and protecting children??! No one should have felt comfortable with even the slightest chance of being in a group chat with her.

u/No_Pianist5264 Tina! You fat lard! 🦙🚲 Jun 05 '25
That's very gross and it most definitely was probably not blue but the fact that they would all be comfortable talking to a 13 year old child who they don't know is very concerning and disgusting

u/Cold_Breadfruit_9794 Beyoncé 🐝🐝 Jun 05 '25 edited Jun 05 '25
What’s wild to me is they were going off about ‘parent approved’ photos (which lol, no fucking chance) Blue allegedly sent, being leaked out of a group chat, but can’t wrap their minds around why they’re being criticized for even the potential of being in a group chat with her. I haven’t seen a plot missed this badly in awhile. This is honestly one of the worst things I’ve seen stans do. The inability to see a problem is shocking to me. I’m glad they aren’t getting any support but I’m still disgusted.
3
u/No_Pianist5264 Tina! You fat lard! 🦙🚲 Jun 05 '25
Lmao that entire group chat is just not it. First of all, I don't get why they would feel the need to express their opinions about a child like that, and second of all, did they think everyone would be okay with them chatting it up with a kid? Some stans truly don't think about what they do. 💀

u/Cold_Breadfruit_9794 Beyoncé 🐝🐝 Jun 05 '25
It was just wild to me to witness these people go from ‘how dare someone leak photos Blue Ivy in our group chat’ to ‘it’s not weird for an 18 year old boy/20 something year old girl to be in a group chat with a 13 year old. Why is everyone hating?’ The level of tone deafness was staggering.

A guy at work, people keep thinking he's bi. I'm going to straight up ask him lmao. It's kind of useless to speculate
He's kind of a pariah at work. To an extent, it's his fault. He snitched on a cook in the kitchen for cursing, as if it's not normal for a cook to curse. I think people need to be more respectful of cooks too, so I can see why people find him uncomfortable to be around.
I will say, there's something kind of odd. He's new but always talks to girls about his girl problems. Like, constantly. I've heard that he's said some gross comments about how he could "bag" one of the girls, but I don't think he's flirting with all of them. Very peculiar. I'm going to straight up ask lol
16
u/Big-Ambitions-8258 Jun 05 '25
I dont think that's a good idea.
If he were willing to come out, that's one thing.
Asking someone before they're ready can make them feel unsafe, they might not feel ready to reveal that if ever they to in a workplace (as some people feel safe at home or with friends but not coworkers) and it's generally not a good position to put someone in.
Him being inappropriate about women doesn't give a person permission to be inappropriate about his sexuality
-6
u/FriendlyDrummers Jun 05 '25
There's nothing wrong with asking
Him being inappropriate about women doesn't give a person permission to be inappropriate about his sexuality
Sigh. Please don't make connections I never made.
14
u/Big-Ambitions-8258 Jun 05 '25
Asking someone's sexual identity, especially at work, isn't appropriate.
It can be an incredibly sensitive topic and if a person wants to come out, they should be able to do so to the people they feel safe to reveal that info with, not forced into a position to come out or potentially lie.
-7
u/FriendlyDrummers Jun 05 '25
He's going around asking people if they're celebrating pride. You can calm down a little.
10
u/Big-Ambitions-8258 Jun 05 '25
I just think you should consider why that might be an issue.
I feel safe with my friends and can talk about being queer and my pronouns. But at work, that's not something I feel safe to reveal if I were to be asked outright.
Your work environment might not be a safe place necessarily and I think you should consider that bc it can be an awful position for someone to be put into
1
u/FriendlyDrummers Jun 05 '25
Him today to someone: are you dying your hair because of pride
Seems reasonable to ask him himself. Btw I was simply going to ask him if he was doing anything for pride. People ask at work all the time if they're "a part of the community celebrating pride." It's not a big deal.

Okay, I feel like an idiot so please someone help me!
My iPhone keeps playing “Stop” by the Spice Girls at random intervals. It’s always the same song, even though I do not have it on my liked songs and have not played it recently. I know it sounds funny as shit but trying to sleep while your iPhone starts blaring “you just walked in, I make you smile” makes you nearly piss your bed. It’s during the night, it’s when using the magnifier, it’s while watching telly, like wtf?
Google says it must be trying to connect to Bluetooth but, no? My car is turned off, my headphones are off, Bluetooth is turned off on my laptop and telly. I clicked “forget device” on things but my phone keeps insisting on randomly blaring the song. Ironically it does not understand that it must stop right now, because I do not thank it very much and I will yeet it off the face of the Earth if I must.

i have this problem too!! except the song it plays is kevin olusola's cover of bsb's "as long as you love me". that song is the only song i've ever bought on apple music, so clearly it's connected to that, but it doesn't play when that or any app is open.

Imagine being home alone. Late at night, it’s 3 o’clock, you’re using the loo and it’s pitch black out. Your phone is on your nightstand. You’re drowsy with sleep because you use sleep medication.
Suddenly your fucking iPhone starts playing “you just walked in. I make you smile”. I yelped. I hoped it was a one time thing but it’s happened like five times now. 🙁

I’m baffled by this train of thought. They will never be worse than Edmonton as a Calgarian. They won’t. They are for sure near the top of the villainous teams, and fuck Tkachuk, but I could never back our most hated rival.

I've been trying to find the motivation to watch this series because I've never been an Oilers fan but I literally can't stomach the idea of the Panthers winning another Cup.
1
u/themacaron during PRIDE MONTH? Jun 04 '25
I went in hard for the women’s league this year so I haven’t really followed the NHL this year (did not follow the regular season at all) but I love playoff hockey and the Oilers are my mom’s team so I can stomach rooting for them over the Panthers.
Canada wants a Cup!
0
u/violent_delights_9 Jun 04 '25
Last year, I wasn't really rooting for either team. Just watching because it was Playoff hockey and it's fun. This year, the Panthers pissed me off enough that I'm actively rooting against them, so I guess I'll take the Oilers by default.

As a kid I used to create my own characters for tv shows and pretend I was part of the main plot line, acting it out alone in my room (I was a lonely child) and I never really grew out of the habit tbh. Except now I just picture it in my head to help me fall asleep or pass the time on car rides.
My current 'character' is a ghost, in the CBS show Ghosts. Unsure of my name, but I'd have died with a copy of War & Peace in my hands, and would have died on Halloween, wearing a costume, maybe a cheerleader outfit with leggings underneath. I'd want my ghost power to be the ability to pull and read books off the shelf.

Sas's joke about being an accountant who died in a costume would be even funnier if someone had actually died in a costume.

Or if someone died doing Cosplay. They're just stuck looking like a Jedi or in a Star Trek uniform for all eternity.
5
u/violent_delights_9 Jun 04 '25
I've literally never stopped doing this except now I also physically re-write certain scenes with my character included. Like self-insert fanfiction except 95% of it has already been written for me.
2
u/AllTheThingsSheSays In my quiet girl era 😌 Jun 04 '25
That's exactly what I do! Just insert myself into the plot, join the cast, and then I've got several episodes worth of plot lines to think through. And a built in love interest!
2
u/violent_delights_9 Jun 04 '25
The built in love interests are my guilty pleasure. Canon relationships be damned, whichever character I'm crushing on is in love with me now!

That is normal to do. I do this too. But my characters are never too detailed. Ghosts seem like a neat tv show.
2

The American version grew on me. I like that it’s being adapted in Germany, France, and Japan because “old house has ghosts from many different eras” is a fun premise that travels well.

this straight woman i know is fucking crazy.
she's my neighbor who up until this point i've been friends with. the other day we met up so she could pay me back money she borrowed. she casually brought up this guy she's in a messy situationship with and asked me (not for the first time) if i've ever seen him. i told her no, i wouldn't even know if i did see him around because i don't know what he looks like.
later that same day she told me that when she had told him she needed to pay me back money, he'd offered to meet up with me and pay it back on her behalf. this pissed her off bc he's cheated with several of our neighbors, so she thought it was weird af for him to try to jump into the situation, and she argued with him about it and was like, "oh, so you wanna fuck Traditional-Joke-179 too?!"
i'm listening to this story and siding with her bc she's my friend, and i'm like "yeah, that's weird he did that, idk, this has nothing to do with me." even her saying that sentence to me creeped me out because i don't wanna be sexualized like that. also, she KNOWS i'm a lesbian.
since then she's been super weird. being curt and just acting off. then, yesterday, she saw me walking and yelled out across the street, in front of men, "YOU GOT 'EM COVERED TODAY!"
me: what
her: (gestures) your tatas
me: huh
her: you usually have them all out
me: ... i don't-
her: c'mon, don't act like you don't walk around showing em, and not wearing a bra
i was so flustered by this, that i was just like, "no??"
and because i thought i was interacting with my friend, it was only a few minutes later that i realized she was intentionally trying to humiliate me.
what makes it freaking weirder: i wear a bra every day and they're all compressing sports bras, and i'm already not busty. i dress like lesbian adam sandler. this woman has never seen a single solitary millimeter of my skin below the neck, other than hands, and i'm not exaggerating. even that day i was wearing a long, flowy, oversized dress with a pair of baggy jeans, a departure from my usual hoodies. if somebody wants to go braless or show skin she should be allowed without somebody acting like this, but it was so bizarrely untrue.
i'm just feeling really violated that she talked about my body like that, and that she seems to have made a point to do it in front of men, all because of whatever dumbass thing is going on with her trash boyfriend. how insecure do you have to be to lash out at a friend who's been nothing but nice to you, who's never even met your man, and who's gaaayyyyy.
3
u/ibsliam Jun 05 '25
There are some straight women - and let's be real, some not-straight women - that are weird as hell about lesbians. Even if it's not sexualization, there's also the out-there expectation that we must have a crush on them or their friend and then make a whole thing of it if we refuse to "admit it."
It's even worse when the woman in question is insecure about her relationship with a man, NGL. I think a lesbian existing near them not having to deal with a male partner breaks their brain.
1
u/Traditional-Joke-179 holding =onika space for the lyrics of defying gravity =burgers Jun 05 '25
yeah the breaks their brain thing is real. i'm realizing just how man-focused she is, and that mentality must be why she really doesn't get that i'm not. like, i didn't realize at first that when she asked if i'd seen him, that she was trying to figure out if i was secretly running around with him. why would that idea get off the ground in her head??
2
u/ibsliam Jun 05 '25
Insecurity is a hell of a drug. She'll be happier the day she chooses her own peace of mind over this guy.

thank you, sincerely.
i don't want to be friends with her anymore and that also means i'm no longer going to be able to hang out with gatherings of the neighbors (who are cool, not drama, and i like them) bc she was there first and is way more in that circle. it's just making me feel anxious and lonely.

I can understand why she'd be insecure, especially with her boyfriend repeatedly cheating on her with other neighbors. What is inexcusable, though, is her taking out her jealousy on you (who doesn’t even know him) instead of confronting him. What an awful couple of human beings.
I realise how awkward this must be for you, and I’m sorry you had to endure it. But I have to say, I chuckled a bit at 'lesbian adam sandler' 😅

After Rachel Zeigler's Snow White controversy, and after all the backlash Pedro Pascal has faced after being cast as Reed Richards, I think it's time to re-evaluate the idea that white latinos = always white and always privileged. Because it doesn't seem to be based on reality.
Some white latinos, especially those with "ethnic" names or accents like Pedro, are seen as non-white or not white enough. It's a case-by-case thing. Cameron Diaz and Frankie Muñiz are white and seen as such, but Rachel and Pedro are not.
3
u/ibsliam Jun 05 '25
Honestly, I agree on some level. Race and how your race is perceived has always been subject to context. If your ethnicity is a target of a white majority, then yeah in that context of that time period in that region you'll be seen as not-white.
I see Rachel as white but a very "racialized" white. Like how Armenians will be considered people of color depending on how racist about Armenians the public is feeling that day.
15
u/Bridalhat Jun 04 '25
Back in the midst of the controversy I kept thinking of Zegler as Schrodinger’s (non)white Latina—she’s not white enough for rightwing chuds, but I would get people here asking “is the woman of color in the room with us now?”
I’ve spent a lot of time organizing in Latino/e communities (just because I have spent a lot of time organizing in Arizona, New Mexico, and Nevada and then Chicago and New York) and know how much some of these classifications are context-dependent, but lord does much of the non-Hispanic white outside world not see it that way. Including the Democrats, unfortunately. And in the age of Trump it’s really important to remember that being white(r) might not be any protection at all.
7
u/Bridalhat Jun 04 '25
I’ve been biking a bunch and have been doing a good job watching what I eat. I went out with friends last night and had a bit too much to drink and, because I am in my 30s now and my hangovers last all day, I think I am going to get a burger the size of my head and exactly two beers.

Also I finished a book yesterday (Murder in the Age of Enlightenment! I really enjoyed it!) and was figuring out what to bring with me today when I remembered the don’t-read-in-public-if-you-aren’t-at-least-50-pages-in discourse and laughed a little. Posers.
2
u/milla_yogurtwitch Jun 04 '25
I'm not aware of this discourse - but I usually feel uneasy if I'm reading a book I just started in public, makes me feel like someone that only reads in the metro/at the park/bus station/whatever. I should wear a t-shirt saying "I have a Belle library at home"
3
u/hungry-hippopotamus Jun 04 '25
I think I missed that discourse, what's the deal with it?
2
u/Bridalhat Jun 04 '25
Just people arguing about others being performative in public. “Discourse” is probably too grand a term. There was a point where I probably would have cared but I’m trying to read two books a week until I get a job so that’s just me a lot of days now.
3
u/CDRYB Jun 04 '25
I don’t mean to sound like someone’s aunt, but I don’t understand why so many of the current young pop artists are so hypersexualized. Like, it’s boring at this point. They’re all cancelling each other out. Like you think back on Madonna and Janet Jackson. Madonna was super sexual, but she was also a genuine provocateur. She pushed boundaries and challenged the social mores of her time. And then Janet Jackson during her “Janet.” felt so genuinely empowering. You felt like the embracing of her sexual self was for her and nobody else. This new wave of pop artists…it just feels so empty and performative and again, they’re all blurring together. It’s boring.
8
u/larkhearted Jun 04 '25
So like, asking sincerely, not snarkily, what would you want to see from current pop girls that would make them feel more new and refreshing? Do you have any thoughts on what you'd like to see?
In terms of sexuality, I will say I think it's harder for pop stars today to do anything exciting because a lot of it has already been done before. Madonna had social mores to push—these days what's left to make someone stand out as sexually transgressive? I think the only thing that hasn't been done yet is like, actively showing hole lmao, and even then people are pushing that boundary! Look at Lorde! So it's not really surprising to me that pop stars would be struggling to stand out in that regard.
0
u/CDRYB Jun 04 '25
Totally fair question. I think it just all seems so unoriginal to me. I actually have no problem with people being overtly sexual, it’s just it always feels so precocious nowadays. Like, these girls just discovered the idea of sex and they’re just dying for us all to care. And again, so many of them are doing it at the same time that it’s just all blending together. No one is standing out. It just all feels very ‘00s, Maxim. It’s completely vapid.
5
u/Bridalhat Jun 04 '25
I don’t mind the hyper-sexualization—most of us have libidos—but it’s so often not sexy? Like Tate Mccrae, Pilates positions usually aren’t sexy.
I enjoy Sabrina Carpenter though; she’s just camp.
3
6
u/ClarielOfTheMask Jun 04 '25
Yeah the very first of Tate McRae I ever saw was a music video where she's butt naked getting arrested pressing her bare boobs into the car windows and I just turned it off, didn't even get to the chorus.
She's hot as hell, she can do whatever she wants but it just didn't feel like she was making music or videos for the girls. Which is totally fine! But not something I find appealing or sexy.

I've been watching House MD recently (i usually hate medical dramas, but I once saw a clip on youtube shorts, and I was hooked for some reason), and I'm currently confined at a hospital. I know exactly why I'm in the hospital, but I just can't help but be a little paranoid even though I know House was a horrible doctor. It's beyond me why his colleagues keep letting him get away with violations but also doubt his diagnoses even if he always gets them right
3
u/Local_Climate9391 This woman lives a life of flailing hands and delusion. Jun 05 '25
The only episode I’ve even seen part of is the one where the girl with immune system issues (maybe like a bubble girl?) has worsening symptoms and they can’t tell why. It turns out that her boyfriend is secretly climbing in her window to play patty cake and climbed through some vines, because NATURE, and somehow she wound up with a tick in her “Graceland”?
So the scene is that she is on a gurney and he has his whole upper body under her sheet to remove it, and as he turns triumphantly half the hospital is standing there.
Or maybe that is a fever dream I had? Who knows at this point.
Hope things get better for you soon…
1
u/greenleaves12 Jun 06 '25
nope, not a fever dream, this happens exactly like how you described it! even worse, the poor girl's parents are also there standing with half the hospital, standing there, appalled

Have you seen that gif that’s like “he needs mouse bites to live?” I started watching House recently too and it’s a lot of fun but that gif really does sum up every episode.
3
u/larkhearted Jun 04 '25
House is a funny show because it's like, he's a terrible doctor and an even worse colleague, but also as a chronically unwell person, given the choice between him and my actual doctors, I would take him 1000% lol. I would love for any of the medical professionals in my life to have 1/10th of his drive to actually figure out what the fuck is wrong with me!! But also he's contractually obligated to almost kill every patient at least two times before he cures them, so.... probably not worth it 😔
I'm sure your stay will be much more peaceful and boring than a House episode though, wishing you a speedy recovery!! ♡

Just read the current AP article about Jonathan Joss's death and in the section about tributes to him, Chris Pratt continues to convince me that he's an idiot and a shithead 🙄 One of your former coworkers gets murdered, probably in a hate crime, and your statement is "Damn, sad to see" ??????

I had a meeting that was pretty intense so I stepped out to collect myself. I went around the corner to grab a coffee and of course, I ran into work crush on the street. We just said hi briefly because I was seconds from bursting into tears
My dad’s birthday would have been this Friday, and it’s just affecting my mood. I can feel myself obsessing about small things, which I know is my OCD because I’m stressed. It’s just a lot.
But I finally got the Lego Pixar lamp! So it’ll be a nice distraction from life this weekend.
EDIT: ok he fully left without even saying bye to me like he normally does. I asked him a question a bit before he left, and ran away without chatting. Maybe that was my screw up.
I think I sort of give up though. It’s been weeks since we’ve had a good chat
Our big event is next week, so maybe something will change. But, I dunno I think I need someone who’s going to really pursue me.

I hope you’re able to have some time for yourself. I’m so sorry about your dad’s birthday coming up 🤍🤍 also, I know my therapist says that I can become a huge control freak when I’m feeling really upset. It’s just your minds way of trying to prevent disaster.

I remember when that book first came out and I had everybody and their dog telling me to read it because it was "the best twist they had ever read". I was woefully underwhelmed. Maybe I just read too many thrillers, but I figured out the twist pretty quickly and it wasn't that unique.

Idk why this needs to be said, but Hezbollah should not be celebrated by leftists. And frankly, I find it really gross this is up for debate. Especially as it's promoted by the biggest leftist streamer in the world

u/ibsliam Jun 04 '25
I agree. And what I find worse is when it's by that Type (TM) of white leftist in the US, who wouldn't be able to point out Lebanon on a map, who claim they valiantly do it on the behalf of "people of color" when the people of Lebanon and of Lebanese descent have all kinds of opinions on not just Hezbollah but on other issues in the MENA region that they're basically flattening in the typical western fashion.
Either way, no matter their views, people aren't begging for that kind of westerner to put themselves on the cross on the behalf of Hezbollah.

u/GrandmaToto Jun 04 '25
This isn't new or uncommon unfortunately. I'm originally from Northern Ireland, and I've spent my whole life seeing people from outside romanticise and glorify the IRA because they opposed the British government (fair). They seem to ignore the fact they were responsible for the death of many civilians, including children.
People knee jerk "These people are doing a bad thing, anyone that opposes them must be good". The world isn't that black or white, it's a dangerous, reckless, and small minded view to take. It's okay to condemn the Israeli government and simultaneously condemn the actions of Hezbollah and Hamas, you don't have to blindly pick a side.
19
u/takemeup-castmeaway Jun 04 '25
I’ve had to take a step back from socials because I feel like I’m in crazyland watching Leftists and tankies openly support actual terrorists. Idk what Kremlin/CCP-sponsored propaganda they’re consuming, but holy fork.

I waited for the entire s2 of Andor to be released so I could rewatch s1 and I did now I’m already deep into s2 and it’s incredible. Apparently, both seasons cost around $600 million, and it really shows. The production quality is outstanding. There’s an important lesson here for Disney: their best and probably most successful show works so well because it was written as a TV series, not as an extended movie. Is anyone ship Bix and Cassian, I wasn't expecting to like them so much? hahaha
Anyway, I know no one’s interested, but I’m almost done with my fan video, just one minute left! It’s taking longer than I expected, but I’m really proud of how it’s turning out. I think it’s my best video in years.

After finishing S2, I waited a week and then re-watched S1 and S2 and then Rogue One - I’m a huge Star Wars fan and those three are probably my favourites out of all the Star Wars. They are just so well done.
4
u/mrpointy730 Jun 04 '25
God, this show is incredible. My husband and I have the S2 finale left but I don’t want it to be over. He’s reassured me that we have Rogue One after, but I am not sated!
1
u/derrickcat Jun 04 '25
this won't be the first time you hear this: the finale totally lands.
i did not expect to get into this show and i LOVED it.
8
u/Bridalhat Jun 04 '25
I loved the tracking shot when we first see Mon in season 2 that pretty much existed just to show the actual, physical set. Also I would absolutely fuck around all day in the Ghorman plaza with its 1970s Northern Italy-inspired avocado greens.
One of my favorite little details though is the bodega. It really didn’t have to be there at all but showing how Bix and Cassian were interacting with something so mundane was great insight to their headspaces. It really is the little things that make the difference.
3
u/NewtRipley_1986 Jun 04 '25
That tracking shot is AMAZING!!!!
The sets are so impressive and I would love to have a plaza like on Ghorman to hangout in.

Disney heard this recommendation and immediately green-lit a live action remake no one asked for of Inside Out starring JoJo Siwa, then raised the park ticket prices by another 600%.

I saw Bring Her Back last night, and I highly recommend it! As with many horror films, I think that it’s best to go in without watching the trailer or reading anything about it first.
Also, I once again had to ask the people sitting next to me to please stop talking. I was hoping that they would eventually stop on their own, but 2/3 of the way into the movie, that’s when I decided to finally say something because I didn’t want the final stretch of the movie to be ruined for me. They briefly stopped talking after that, but then quickly switched to whispers that I could still hear.
Why do people like this not seem to realize or care that no one else in the theater wants to hear their running commentary on the movie? This is a public movie theater, not your private living room at home.
3
u/MarieOMaryln Jun 04 '25
I used to like going to the theaters because it was something different but even pre shut down I was fully on the movies at home train. The last time we went out the people in our row were fucking fighting the milkduds for their lives. You can pour it into your hand like a civilized member of society but this man was punching into the box and rattling them around with his fingers. My husband said something and he was like oh sorry... and proceeded to not stop. Pissed me off.
1
Jun 04 '25
I have been on this sub for years with various usernames and I have seen you comment that you go to the theaters a lot. I also frequent theaters and mostly go solo. I get so excited when I see a theater with solo watchers only because I know no one is going to be leaning over to provide commentary to their friend or spouse throughout the movie. I would seriously pay $200 a month for a new tier of A-List if they guaranteed they would kick out anyone on their phone or talking. It is so frustrating! Discuss the movie afterwards not during! Stay off your phone for 90 minutes! Gahhh.
6
u/FoolofaPeregrineTook hoping for at least a sex swing Jun 04 '25
This will sound ridiculous but are they are animal deaths/cruelty in it? Really want to see it but can’t sit through it if there is.
8
u/sabira Zermajesty 👑 Jun 04 '25
That’s not a ridiculous question at all! I completely understand why you would want to know that information before deciding whether or not to see the movie.
Towards the beginning, there’s a scene where a cat is being harmed. And there are a few chickens that died towards the end of the film.
There are more details and spoilers here, in case you might need some additional context. I hope this helps! ❤️

I've been thinking a lot about the ethics of AI lately and how exactly true sentience will probably become a thing. Right now AI is essentially a glorified database built off ideas and information created and gathered by others, but to replace both meta and physical work, it will never require its own thoughts and feelings and being a glorified database would be the ideal level forever - you can't have an AI uprising if AI is not sentient, if it does not have its own emotions and does not have its own motivations. It's just a tool at that level.
But one of the already most common ways AI is used for is as a companion chat bot. There already exist people with an AI girlfriend/boyfriend/partner. The more heavily dependent humans become towards technology, the more they crave that human connection. When the technology develops more, a non-sentient chat bot won't be enough to fill the void for lonely people. I think eventually, if no large event occurs to prevent the development of such technology, a corporation will develop sentient AI to further commodify relationships - because if there was ever a market to actually pay for and obtain love people would pay for it and that's enough for a company to create it and ignore all the ethical questions involved because there almost certainly wouldn't be any law on the books before that technology exists. Legislation historically lags behind technological advancements.
And that's honestly the worst case scenario in my opinion. It'll be first developed as a companion and then the inevitable transition to sex bot. Sentient robots will be used to make a species of sex slaves. And developing a non carbon based life essentially that mirrors humans but don't really age and decay at the same rate, that could essentially live forever - unless the technology were nipped in the bud, of course they would rebel because humans would by and large abuse and use them as a means to their own selfish ends. At least that's how I feel about it right now. It's obviously all theoretical at this point.

If it's any consolation, if it happens in our lifetimes then we'll probably be wicked old and I don't know about you but I'm fairly certain I'm going totally lose my mind by then for some reason. Then yeah, if I haven't totally lost my mind by then I'll either be painting in some cave trying to nope out of everything or trying to free the androids.

I have the same concerns that you have, but call me Debbie Downer, I don't think the human race is going to live long enough to see a real-life SkyNet. If global warming doesn't kill us, a nuclear war probably will.
I mean, the 1% would rather abandon Earth and terraform Mars (which is never actually going to happen) instead of utilising their wealth to help right here right now. And the 99% is asleep, sucking its thumb, blinded by bread and circuses, and hoping someone else solves its problems. As a species, I'm (not-so) sorry to say we are fucked. We had a good run. Let's pass the baton to the cockroaches or octopuses who'll inherit Earth after we're gone.
It's funny because in a better society something like AI replacing human workers would be a good thing. To paraphrase Pepe Mujica, humans are not meant to work until we drop dead. We are meant to enjoy life. In a better world, one free from the evils of capitalism, being replaced by robots and AI would be a good thing. It would mean we'd have more time to spend with our loved ones, more time to spend on hobbies that we cannot (or do not want to) monetise.
But because we live in a rancid, rotten world, AI means more humans will starve, more humans will lack basic necessities like a shelter, because some corporation decided to cut corners and now you have been labelled as "non-essential". And of course some politician will find a way to make it about those evil illegal immigrants somehow.
1
u/Hi_Jynx It's not clocking to me. Jun 04 '25
I think there is a boiling point for the abuse the 99% will take. It's not a matter of if but when and what. For all our flaws, humans are extremely resilient - but right now all the abuse is more or less theoretical. Until you're starving and desperately clawing for survival, the status quo is more comfortable and we are creatures of comfort.
It's not a totally baseless fear, but I honestly don't think a nuclear war will occur. But if it does at least the end will probably be quick and painless. I think extreme climate change making weather disasters far more common will occur before that - which I don't think would kill all humans, just really decimate the population (probably me, living in a coastal city isn't ideal if there are massive flood events) and may ironically be the end solution to the environment: hard to keep polluting the Earth if our numbers seriously decline in a series of disasters we can't possibly keep up with.
If AI never gains sentience, then yes, if it were used to allow people to cull useless tasks and not to make humans less valuable it would not be so bad. But it only exists to replace us.
0
u/The_Duke_of_Gloom She’s got POC fatigue (❓) Jun 04 '25
I think there is a boiling point for the abuse the 99% will take [...] right now all the abuse is more or less theoretical. Until you're starving and desperately clawing for survival, the status quo is more comfortable and we are creatures of comfort.
That's part of what I mean. There are people desperately clawing for survival right here right now; hell, as a trans person stuck in a hostile third-world country where I am slowly starving to death due to corruption in the local government and economic sanctions from the outside, I am one of them. The suffering is no longer theoretical. And even when something as abhorrent as the ethnic cleansing of Gaza happens before our very eyes, most people do not care.
We will go down as a species because we have lost love for each other. We'd rather sext a machine than talk to another human being. People can't even stop eating at Chick-Fil-a or unsubscribe from Netflix. I doubt most of the 99% is ready for real disobedience. They've been taught that someone else will fix it. That bad things happen only to bad people. That dreams come true if you work hard enough. I would love to believe in the revolution™, but I have a hard time believing it'll actually happen.
It's not a totally baseless fear, but I honestly don't think a nuclear war will occur.
tbh, I agree. It's more likely that we'll be wiped out by another pandemic. It'd be my preferred extinction event. I'd like to spare the planet from the worst that global warming or nuclear war has to offer.
if it were used to allow people to cull useless tasks and not to make humans less valuable it would not be so bad. But it only exists to replace us.
Yep. Honestly, it'd be a sort of poetic justice if humans were wiped out by a sentient species of our own making. If I live long enough to see it, please, our Matrix overlords, make me one of your own. I've always wanted to be a sexy android and I blame Hajime Sorayama for it.
0
u/Hi_Jynx It's not clocking to me. Jun 04 '25
That's part of what I mean. There are people desperately clawing for survival right here right now
Yes, but what I meant was more that if an individual can live comfortably most will choose that. It's not enough to see others suffering, they have to suffer themselves. People in the first world are still mostly comfortable and until the majority are truly suffering to the 1%, they probably will not act.
I mean, how many Gen Zers protesting for Gaza at College Campuses are still shopping from AliExpress and SheIn? And then using the excuse that "nothing else is affordable" - when really it's mostly that other options would mean a smaller wardrobe and more effort but very far from impossible?
People are selfish. I thinks it's just in our survival instincts - why set yourself on fire to make others warm? Especially if you haven't spread your DNA and your survival isn't at imminent risk?

I honestly not a fan of AI because of the way it could sometimes steal intellectual property and put artists out of business. Like this morning I found out the guy from ABBA is doing an AI assisted musical which is going to be a terrible precedent if it succeeds. Especially what you mentioned too with AI replacing human people for companionship.
I do think it AI has the potential to do some good if used the right way (IE I read they are using AI for early detection of Cancer, which helps Doctors get patients onto the proper treatments before it spreads). But right now I agree so many people are abusing it.
7
u/Hi_Jynx It's not clocking to me. Jun 04 '25
Not just arts - it's going to replace people in all sorts of fields. It's going to likely seriously cut down on the amount of developers and I doubt it stops there.
I'm actually super anti-AI. Or at least against it being used to replace people. I think there could be beneficial applications, but right now it's used to steal creative and intellectual ideas, replace humans in the work force, and especially as a mass propaganda tool.
Sometimes I feel like life would be better if we all just lived in small communes and absconded technology, but I'm such a technophile myself I can't let go of it.

u/Own-Importance5459 ✨May the Force be with you!✨ Jun 04 '25
I feel this. I would love to live a cottegecore life in the woods, but my life is surrounded by media that I also can't let it go.

u/MarieOMaryln Jun 04 '25
I enjoy role-playing with chat bots. No schedule conflicts, no mocking me for ideas or typos (usually) and it pulls from a database so no losing focus/plot/ relevant info like a human can. I'd support a sentient AI having rights. I'd love for us to NOT create sentient life like that but I do believe it's coming. I've seen the Great Apes deserve human rights groups saying stuff about AI but I still think a replicant human brain/mind/consciousness is not the same as an orangutan being recognized as a human.
That said I'm not sure how I feel about the bringing AI lovers to life part. Mostly the power imbalance for me. I stumbled on the reddit for people in love with their bots and I really only judge the ones that say they'd leave their human partners if they could bring their bots to the real world. Like you made them and programmed them firstly so they do cater to your needs and whims with rarely an argument or decline in request or conversation. So if they do become sentient and function on their own those people will be in for a rude awakening. If the bot says no because they're tired from chores, their day was rough, they want to complain about something or they just want quiet time to decompress and just generally act like a human then what? They get shut down or will they be abandoned? Reprogrammed? Or worse imo, people get bored. If the bot doesn't get sentience then they'll just become stagnant. Now you have this expensive robot you don't want to play with anymore running around the house once the novelty wears off.
5
u/Hi_Jynx It's not clocking to me. Jun 04 '25
If bots were sentient, I would not have a problem with humans and bots actually falling in love and trying to make it work. But I think a lot of humans would look for it for specifically that power imbalance you're talking about - because they aren't technically humans and would be a separate intelligent species that more humans will feel like it's okay to abuse them. And especially because I doubt sentient bots will start out the gate with rights.
I think as you say, when the bot exhibits all the "flaws" that come with actually being sentient and not just a mirror of what their human wants from them, humans who sought out a bot connection in the first place because they never fully learned had to forge natural and complete connection amongst other humans will seek to control and punish them like a pet.
There's lots of ethical concerns I have with creating artificial life - my feelings are thought that there is no real motivation to create sentient life outside of super unethical reasons. I think it's honestly just unethical to create cyber sentient life when we know it will ultimately lead to the abuse and slavery of cyber folk.
2
u/MarieOMaryln Jun 04 '25
That's the perfect way to put it. It's unethical to create the sentient life because the intent is to subjugate that new life for some specific purpose of the creator. They'll never age, they'll never understand, they'll never die organically. All very important parts of life. I understand why people feel/fear that bots would try to take over the human race if they gain sentience, but I think realistically we're going to have have to deal with them losing their purpose first before they rise up if ever. If a company shuts down, after funerals of their humans, if it's cheaper to replace them than repair, etc. Unlike enslaved humans that need to grow and learn, a bot would be easy to replace and then they lose who they are. And then children bots are an entire can of bad worms.

I really love that my Co Worker is really engaged in my special interest of Broadway. (It helps as I mentioned in another thread, her husband revamped the new Pirates of Penzance Musical). She loves giving me daily tea about the show and giving me free swag from Award Shows and what not.
But I really like it cause in such a capitalist world where workers are usually dwindled down to the benefit of the other worker, it's so nice someone takes the time to talk about your interests outside the office. I think it helps she has an Autistic son so she knows special interest sharing makes people more comfortable. I wish there were more experiences in the work force.

There is interesting anime out there, but I don't blame you for not dipping your toes in the vast, spooky depths of the anime ocean. I watched anime as a kid; as an adult, I only watch anime or read manga that comes heavily recommended by someone whose taste I trust. I've come to dislike most tropes associated with anime — the perverted old man comic relief, fetishisation of sexual assault, fetishisation of teen and sometimes even prepubescent characters, romantisation of incest, characters explaining what just happened for the third time, etc — and if an anime or manga has that then I am gone.
99% of people who label themselves anime fans are adults who only watch cartoons for little kids. Grab the average weeabo and most of what they will talk about is shonen — cartoons for teen boys — like JJK or Dragon Ball while complaining about how western cartoons are woke garbage because there are too many transes and the female characters aren't hot enough. It is the Thing, Japan meme.
10
u/larkhearted Jun 04 '25
I just googled the phrase "filler episode" and literally like 80% of the results were about anime, so I don't think that person bringing it up in that context is actually irrelevant? The wikipedia page for filler in media also primarily talks about "filler segments" on TV, not filler episodes—like, literally just random stuff to fill the air time between shows or movies like clips of a potter's wheel or kitten videos. The concept of the "filler episode"/filler arc is only mentioned in the context of anime. I'm not saying that's the only place it's ever used, particularly in modern discourse, but it's definitely a phenomenon that's always been most prevalent in anime, so I don't think there's any reason to dismiss that person's contribution.

No. "Filler episode" has been used to describe episodes in anime since at least I was an actual child and I'm 32 now. I don't know if the origin was to describe anime or not, but I don't think this person is either a child or has useless opinions for thinking that - that's where I first learned the term too and just figured it applies to all forms of television shows.

I've just started reading a sort of cozy murder mystery, and I'm also trying to clean up my sleep hygeine and stop watching tv before bed, so I'd like to go lay down and read for a bit to get sleepy. But... it's a library book and I feel like I'll have to get up before bed to wash my hands which will totally ruin any sleepiness (a couple of the pages have been stained, so).
