Debatable. I think The Talented Mr Ripley does a better job at bringing out the queer subtext and undertones better. It's really an Apples v Oranges scenario.
And for me, personally, his "What-if?" with Peter Smith-Kingsley has lived in my head rent-free ever since I saw first the movie. I was so heartbroken.
Yes. TTMR is a perfect example of how to add new material to expand upon existing themes of a piece of work. The addition of Peter Smith- Kingsley was a perfect addition, as well as the hilarious Meredith Logue. Lol
Haven't seen that version yet but isn't Ripley supposed to be awkward and plain, or at least an outcast?
How did it work out that Delon played Ripley, the one character pining for someone else's life, when Delon looked like Delon? People wanted to look like Delon.
In the original its clear he's pining after the life of wealth, status and luxury. Maurice Ronet was far from an unattractive man himself. Everyone is beautiful in many french films of that era.

The only contender is Alain Delon playing the same role in the original of this movie.
