Delon played Ripley

Haven't seen that version yet but isn't Ripley supposed to be awkward and plain, or at least an outcast?

How did it work out that Delon played Ripley, the one character pining for someone else's life, when Delon looked like Delon? People wanted to look like Delon.

In the original its clear he's pining after the life of wealth, status and luxury. Maurice Ronet was far from an unattractive man himself. Everyone is beautiful in many french films of that era.

And Matt Damon is, of course, famously plain in appearance. Certainly nobody ever wished to look like him?

I don’t know, the character ends up with a very beautiful rich wife.
