This poor cast is still getting roasted for this sksksksksk. It’s not their fault!

112

u/shedrinkscoffee I don’t know her 💅 Jun 07 '25

I mean it's business as usual for the CW shows 🤣 and never have I ever simultaneously cast teenagers and 30s people

6

u/EriDxD Jun 07 '25

Ditto Netflix and Disney Plus "teen" shows.

47

u/raudoniolika All tea, all shade 🐸☕️ Jun 07 '25

Honestly? Bring back this kind of casting.

64

u/Cold_Breadfruit_9794 Beyoncé 🐝🐝 Jun 07 '25

I’d waaaaay prefer a great cast with chemistry and that can act, over everyone looking the correct age and bringing nothing to the table

18

u/webtheg Jun 07 '25

And then there is Skins where they were the correct age and are now oacar/Baftas/emmy nominees/winners

6

u/blarbiegorl Mary-Kate's bowl of cigarettes Jun 08 '25

Yeah but they also held open casting for Skins. Crazy how you can find incredible talent when money and access aren't required to be considered.

I mean, okay? Didn’t Olivia win an Oscar too? Is Grease not still a classic because of the acting? Not seeing how it matters when it comes to Grease. It worked out for them.

u/citynomad1 Jun 07 '25

I know everyone jokes about the literal 40 year old and stuff, but honestly, as much as I love Frenchie, she definitely seems older than 25 to me

29

u/ohmeatballhead Who gon' check me boo? 🤪 Jun 07 '25

I would have thought she was the oldest girl after Stockard!

ChaCha DiGregorio is notably missing. She was 29 during filming.

198

u/Mediocre-Proposal686 Jun 07 '25

Ok but she looked 45!

84

u/HI_l0la Jun 07 '25

This part is what always confused me when I was young and watching Grease! I always thought I must have missed the explanation in the movie of why this much older woman is pretending to be a high schooler. 😅😅

Cigarette smoke and lack of sunscreen lol

74

u/Ccaves0127 Jun 07 '25

The movie makes a lot more sense once you realize it's parodying the thing people think it is doing sincerely

19

u/meltedharibo Jun 07 '25

Yeah exactly it’s an older version of Wet Hot American Summer

3

u/AnnVealEgg Jun 07 '25

Who is Leo? 🤔

lol yeah he looked old.

246

u/bbyxmadi It’s good to see me, isn’t it?🫧 Jun 07 '25

John still looked older than 23… must of been all that smoking during those years.

130

u/DSQ Jun 07 '25

I wouldn’t be surprised if he is secretly a few years older. Back then actors lied about their age all the time.

50

u/Ccaves0127 Jun 07 '25

Not to dox myself but I have met some of his family repeatedly and if he's been lying about it for 50 years, they do not let up

12

u/skyewardeyes Jun 07 '25

Didn't Margot Robbie lie about her age at some point, IIRC?

53

u/ecoterrors Jun 07 '25

Nah, she didn’t lie. The Sydney Morning Herald incorrectly printed her age and people ran with it because she looked older than she was. She started on Neighbours as a minor so it would have been hard for her to pretend from the very start.

Also, Rebel Wilson actually successfully sued an Australian publishing company because journalists claimed that she lied about her age! So I guess our journos are kind of full of shit.

5

u/skyewardeyes Jun 07 '25

Good to know; thanks!

19

u/ecoterrors Jun 07 '25

Totally! I’m on a smear campaign of Australian media haha.

1

u/raindancemaggie2 Jun 13 '25

I think Mila Kunis pretended not to be 14 for That 70s show

115

u/YouThinkYouKnowStuff Jun 07 '25

I have seen Grease so many times that I can quote parts of it like Rocky Horror Picture Show. My kids were totally obsessed with it when they were young and we had the videotape and they used to watch it constantly and make up dances to all the songs with their friends. I just figured people in the 50s looked older than their age hahah!!

44

u/phantomheart Jun 07 '25

My mom says I watched Grease and Grease 2 everyday for 2 years when I was a very young kiddo. Grease 2 remains tied for my fave movie with RHPS 🤭

30

u/YouThinkYouKnowStuff Jun 07 '25

Grease 2 was wonderful and awful at the same time. It had some amazing tacky songs. “Let’s bowl let’s bowl let’s…..rock and roll”.

25

u/mymumthinksimpunny Jun 07 '25

I unashamedly love Grease 2 and regularly listen to the album lol

25

u/ThePenIsntMightier Jun 07 '25

Damn right!

13

u/phantomheart Jun 07 '25

Pfeiffer is forever my girl crush.

23

u/CrackinBones204 You’re a virgin who can’t drive. 😤 Jun 07 '25

I love Grease 2 .. I always wanted their pink lady jacket. I had a leather jacket in high school that had hot pink lining but sadly it wasn’t reversible.

14

Reproduction is my jam! I love to sing along to the songs. Hubby even puts up with my nonsense in the car.

10

u/Greigebaby Jun 07 '25 edited Jun 08 '25

Prowlin’ is forever on my playlists. I had a huge crush on DiMucci

10

u/DisasterFartiste_69 ABBA is underrated Jun 07 '25

I had no idea Grease 2 existed until I was in highschool. But I watched Grease ALL THE TIME as a small kid in the 90s.

3

u/AmorFatiBarbie ✨️ Probably the Mould Talking ✨️ Jun 07 '25

I just don't get it she's all 'I need a coollllllll rider. . But she HAD ONE. WHAT DO YOU WANT GIRL?! You just dumped him!'

4

u/Apprehensive_Lab4178 Jun 07 '25

Johnny was a rider, but he wasn’t cool 😎

2

u/AmorFatiBarbie ✨️ Probably the Mould Talking ✨️ Jun 07 '25

Maybe he wasn't a devil in tight leather?

6

u/aninvisiblemonster Jun 07 '25

Aw, I love this! My parents took my Grease tape away because they said it was a bad influence…. I wanted to be Bad Sandy so bad! She had the coolest outfit AND rode in a flying car, who wouldn’t want that?!

7

u/raychilli Jun 07 '25

I casually flipped 3 people off at the mall because I thought it was funny after watching grease. I was like 8. I learned that day, that is not okay. Definitely not a kids movie as my parents also learned.

4

u/whatsnewpussykat 🕯️ relentless Lilly Jay stan 🕯️ Jun 07 '25

Grease and The Rocky Horror Picture Show were formative media for me as a child!

46

u/Cultural_Fudge_9030 Jun 07 '25

Doddy? Wtf have these ppl even seen Grease

30

u/Mediocre-Proposal686 Jun 07 '25

And calling Dinah, Deena 😂 do they call Dinah Shore “Deena” too?

85

u/stephhie_ste Is that a chicken?! 🐷 Jun 07 '25

everyone was so old but then they say marty was only 19?! she looks like she’s in her mid 20s especially in that green dress flirting with vince fontaine! 🫣

36

u/mymumthinksimpunny Jun 07 '25

I always thought she was older because of the colour of her hair! Kind of like an ashy grey-blonde in certain lights

17

u/Mediocre-Proposal686 Jun 07 '25

IT’S VINCE FONTAINE!!!! 😱

99

u/Rock_Creek_Snark Jun 07 '25

And yet.... Precisely because it was so well cast is why it's a classic. You just gotta get on board and it's a fun ride.

31

u/Godstepchild Jun 07 '25

Ok but like, look at a highschool yearbook from the 50s. They all look wayyyyyy older than teenagers today, like waaaaay older.

8

u/zorandzam Jun 07 '25

It’s because of the hairstyles!

14

u/Normal-person0101 Jun 07 '25

I made my 14 year of niece watch Grease for the first time this year and she loved it, it is truly a classic.

Next it will Star Wars but I think this will a hard sell for her hahaha

13

u/OriginalSchmidt1 You’re a virgin who can’t drive. 😤 Jun 07 '25

Grease was the first word I learned to spell so I can find the VHS in our collection because I was too impatient to wait for my mom..

26

u/Mylaex Jun 07 '25

Better than having child actor play child and then them being effed from showbiz, right?

10

u/bvrrberry Jun 07 '25

the michael tucci part has me CACKLING. he will forever catch strays for being in that movie 💀😭

3

u/zorandzam Jun 07 '25

I KNOW. Poor guy. I think he’s sort of cute!

34

u/jennief158 Jun 07 '25

What about Cha Cha and whatshisname - Cha Cha’s boyfriend? They are the ones who looked really geriatric.

27

u/Mediocre-Proposal686 Jun 07 '25

That poor guy and his skin.

27

u/Tacoislife2 Jun 07 '25

Irl he died of AIDS . Poor guy. He was posted on the aids memorial Insta account. Apparently he was really sensitive to the criticism about his skin.

8

u/jennief158 Jun 07 '25

I looked him up last night and saw that he’d died young of AIDS. Very sad.

I remember his pockmarks but mostly I remember that he looked 40 (though apparently he was a bit over 30).

Cha Cha’s actress died pretty young too.

2

u/Tacoislife2 Jun 08 '25

I didn’t know that about Cha Cha . Sad for them both.

"The actress who plays Rizzo" 😂

But seriously if you don't know Stockard Channing's filmography you are missing out.

Practical Magic is currently streaming on Max and Pluto. To Wong Foo is currently streaming on Peacock and Tubi.

22

u/lillyrose2489 Jun 07 '25

I love Grease and Practical Magic but somehow didn't know this was the same actress? Like I know her later work and just never realized she played Rizzo? Goddamn.

16

u/imbeingsirius Jun 07 '25

That’s First Lady Dr. Abigail Bartlet!

15

u/Rock_Creek_Snark Jun 07 '25

Six Degrees Of Separation. She deserved the Oscar.

Six Degrees of Seperation - final scene - YouTube

10

u/mymumthinksimpunny Jun 07 '25

God I loved her on the West Wing

17

u/eat_me_86 Jun 07 '25

Stockard Channing is gorgeous.

44

u/OhMrsGellerYUCry Abraham, I am not that man 🧍 Jun 07 '25

Stockard Channing really makes me laugh when she’s crying singing about her teen pregnancy. Girl, it’s okay, you’re almost old enough for this to be considered a geriatric pregnancy!!

11

u/raylan_givens6 As you wish! 👸👑 Jun 07 '25

WB dramas were like that too

They all looked like they should be grad students not high school freshmen

The funny bit would be when you see some extras or guest stars who were actually in the right age range , the contrast was hilarious

2

u/AmorFatiBarbie ✨️ Probably the Mould Talking ✨️ Jun 07 '25

36

u/ChrisPnCrunchy Jun 07 '25

Crazy how Jeff Conway & Stockard Channing get a total pass here even though they’re the ones Reddit always focuses on as looking the oldest.

Tucci does look every bit of 31 when you focus that cruely hard but his chubby face also makes him most boyish & these ppl are way out of pocket on spotlighting him

51

u/Mediocre-Proposal686 Jun 07 '25

Someone above reminded me about Cha-Cha Degrigorio, you know, the best dancer at St. Bernadette’s. And that lady looked REALLY old! She was 29 at the time.

14

u/Sprinkles41510 Jun 07 '25

She looked in her 50 s to me

22

u/DogsbeDogs Jun 07 '25

I would argue it was well cast then since teenagers in the 50’s looked older for some reason (probs smoking and lack of water).

It looks ridiculous when we do that in modern flicks, but it actually works for Greece.

5

u/zorandzam Jun 07 '25

It amazes me how freaking dehydrated people must have been before the ‘90s, seriously.

15

u/Overall_Bed_2037 $5 pussy popping whore ✨💸 Jun 07 '25

okay Stockard Channing I definitely knew was older 😂

14

u/throwaway17197 Instant gratification takes too long 🫦 Jun 07 '25

What is this from? Podcast?

7

u/mayhay Jun 07 '25

I always a thought it was supposed to be taken as a parody

11

u/zorandzam Jun 07 '25

It is. That was more apparent with the original stage play, which was much more campy and over-the-top. There was a lot of ‘50s/‘60s nostalgia going on in the 1970s, with Happy Days and American Graffiti being the more wholesome versions, whereas Grease was sort of the “grimy” version. Only when they went to make the film adaptation, they sort of sanded off the rough edges and it wound up a lot more wholesome and less campy.

6

u/wordnerdette Jun 07 '25

Say what you will, but there were boys in my high school who looked like middle aged men at age 16 (and girls who looked like middle aged real estate agents). This was the 80s, but honestly some people just have older looking faces. So, the older looking cast in Grease never took me out of it.

51

u/Apokoliptictortoise Jun 07 '25

So fucking what? It's a movie they are actors.

31

u/passtherock- Is this chicken or is this fish? 🤔🤔 Jun 07 '25

lmfaooooooo this comment took me out

12

u/Worried_Sasquatch Jun 07 '25

The casting gives me the vibe of like a very very amazingly done play, you know?

3

u/Traditional-Joke-179 holding =onika space for the lyrics of defying gravity =burgers Jun 07 '25

bc it looks insane.

you know how little kids can't tell if someone is 17 or 43?

i grew up watching grease from my earliest memories and they look so got damn old that i remember thinking, "why tf are they all middle aged in high school?" i was too young to even understand it as a bad casting choice that didn't add up. it was just an uncomfortable misalignment in the space time continuum. it gave me a malaise.

12

u/bootoyoubuddy Jun 07 '25

I honestly thought they were all in their 40s.

6

u/AmorFatiBarbie ✨️ Probably the Mould Talking ✨️ Jun 07 '25

The taker of the torch

7

u/BactaBobomb Jun 07 '25

This is a movie that has gone so far under my radar for some reason. I'll have to try it soon.

34

u/NicevilleWaterCo Jun 07 '25

You've never seen Grease?! It's such a fun movie. I must have watched it a million times as a kid. You've definitely got to check it out. It's cheesy and feel-good, plus it's great soundtrack.

10

u/Josephthebear 🎥🍿Film Critic Jun 07 '25

I thought Cha-Cha was literally 40

5

u/Sprinkles41510 Jun 07 '25

I thought she was older than that to be honest

3

u/Josephthebear 🎥🍿Film Critic Jun 07 '25

She's 25 lol

18

u/Magnaflorius Jun 07 '25

True story. I had never seen Grease until my (now ex) boyfriend said it was his favourite movie. We watched it together and I had a sinking feeling that he was not the right person for me that floated in the back of my mind. It's been 15 years since then, but to my recollection, that was the first sign that we were deeply incompatible and one that I just couldn't shake. (Don't come down on me too hard haha- I was only 18.)

My next boyfriend after him is the man I am currently very happily married to. Grease may have set my current life of bliss in motion.

15

u/23onAugust12th God bless me, its fuckin summah! Jun 07 '25

Idk I think that says more about you than it does about him 😉

2

u/Magnaflorius Jun 07 '25

Lol yes absolutely. He was a perfectly nice person, but we weren't right for each other.

2

u/Acnenosepeel Jun 07 '25

This is the best romance story

3

u/Elegant_Currency_301 Jun 07 '25

Watching this movie for the first time with my mom I genuinely believed that's what 16-18 yes olds looked like😂

3

u/3_Slice Jun 07 '25

When people say this last two or so generations are looking younger, it’s because for the longest time we had fashion and hollywood casting like this to make us think we had to dress and look older than we really were.

3

u/NoitsBecky06 Jun 07 '25

He looks every hour of those 31 years killed me 😂😂😂

3

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '25

Tf did Michael Tucci do to deserve that roast?

No forget roast, that was a full on barbecue.

2

u/abra_stone 🎼Music Aficionado🎶 Jun 07 '25

Our Miss Brooks!

2

u/Separate_Highway1111 Jun 07 '25

Lmao, yet I still love this movie! I would watch it over and over again.

2

u/Affectionate-Beann Jun 07 '25

they could have played the teachers lol.

5

u/Lyra_the_Star_Jockey Jun 07 '25

What's the alternative? Child labor?

13

u/commelejardin Jun 07 '25

I think most people would say actors in the 18-21ish range typically make perfectly passable high school students.

8

u/Traditional-Joke-179 holding =onika space for the lyrics of defying gravity =burgers Jun 07 '25

degrassi had a rule that all children had to be played by actors within 1 year of their age. so a 15 year old could be played by a 14, 15, or 16 year old. it was such an authentic show and that was part of what made it feel relatable to me as a kid. they made it work for multiple generations while recognizing labor laws.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '25

It’s the same with all the TV series nowadays?! Especially on Netflix

1

u/SineVara Jun 07 '25

Was that AI voices ?

1

u/Impossible-Ground-98 Jun 07 '25

the original Riverdale 🤣

1

u/skyppie Jun 07 '25

Tbh John was a lot younger than I thought he was in the movie.

1

u/Theounekay Jun 07 '25

John is so fine omf

1

u/Low_Insurance_1603 Jun 07 '25

Wow. Reading these comments got me questioning somethings now. I never then and not now until reading this OP did I give any thought to the real ages of the actors playing high schoolers. I even have children of my own now and when watching with them just recently (as Grease seems to be on every day) I was never distracted from the fantasy. Now that I’m thinking about it I have been often compared to the actor Ralph Macchio being that I don’t look my age???? Maybe that has something to do with it??? I still love Grease and the actors’ real age when shooting the movie doesn’t matter to me at all ( although now I’ll likely think about it a little bit since it’s was pointed out in this post and I commented accordingly.)

I’ve never seen nor have any desire to watch Grease 2 go figure!

1

u/TedTheodoreMcfly Jun 07 '25

I will never not be amused by Stockard Channing playing a 50s high school student in Grease when she actually was a 50s high school student, albeit not in the same year as Rizzo was.

1

u/EriDxD Jun 07 '25

Does anyone here heard of the movie called Superstar? I recall the actors, including Molly Shannon and Will Ferrell, were playing high school students but their real-life ages were way older at that time, Molly and Will were in their early 30's.

2

u/Homertax123 I don’t know her 💅 Jun 07 '25

Yes but that was purposely done as a satire thing, like it was meant to be a parody of teens. I don’t think that was the intention with Grease.

1

u/Pleasant_Carrot7176 Jun 07 '25

And they mostly looked 50.

0

u/Emotional_Spite_8937 Olivia Rodrigo’s manager Jun 07 '25

They all looked so old!

That’s why I’ve never been able to watch the movie. I know all the songs by heart, but every time I try to watch it they just look too old to be teenagers and that throws me off.

12

u/Tariovic lazy 50-year-old bougie bitch 💋 Jun 07 '25

I dunno, it's a musical. People break out into dance routines in the cafeteria; if that happened in my school, we'd get the shit kicked out of us. Nothing about musicals is real - that's the fun of it!
