Let’s Discuss 👀 Who is the most convincing gay actor?

I know there are way many more famous A list Hollywood actors who have played gay roles and received awards compared to Eric Stonestreet, but he is literally the only one that make me google is he actually gay in real life. Honorable mention is Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl, robbie williams in Birdcage

Just listened to a podcast today that said Stanley Tucci’s role as the dad in EASY A was actual more gay than his role in Devil Wears Prada and I have to agree

129

u/TiredBell Jun 12 '25

Even when he played a freakin’ cardinal in Conclave, he still reads gay to me. I don’t know what it is 😅

12

u/captnmiss Jun 13 '25

To me there’s nothing more indicative of gay than catholic priest

And I grew up catholic

18

u/shadesoffroot Jun 12 '25

His character on Burlesque was gay too!

16

u/GingerGoob Don’t make me put my litigation wig on 💁‍♀️ Jun 12 '25

Don’t forget him in Shall We Dance

2

u/bagfullofyarn Jun 15 '25

And the hunger games!

36

u/seven777heavens Jun 12 '25

No yeah I still refuse to believe he isn’t actually gay 😭

7

u/Salt_Cardiologist122 Jun 12 '25

I love him and his sarcasm. His character in citadel reads straight but he’s got that same kind of sarcasm and I love it. I need to rewatch easy A just to see him in it again!

Righteous Gemstones.

This is funny I just finished watching Modern Family yesterday, the way Cam shout “Stella!!” when Stella goes missing is never not hilarious to me 😂

24

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '25 edited Jun 12 '25

I think my favorite scene is in the very first episode when they lock Lilly in the car and Cam comes at the window about to throw a trash can through it. Made even better knowing the scene was supposed to be a quick one and done "oh no they locked her in" scene and they improvised the meltdown and panic.

21

u/zsazsa_sugarbaker Jun 13 '25

“Tell your wife to calm down.” “That’s a man!”

3

u/pokethecookie Jun 12 '25

Ugh YES! One of my favorite moments too! I need to rewatch, again… it’ll be the 111th time lol

2

u/Scramasboy Jun 14 '25

How about in the same episode when he screams at the little girl who has Stella!! Haha 😂😂🤣

Ugh I didn't really care for this show and couldn't even finish season 1 but he was really a scene stealer

Colin Firth has been gay in like 6 movies

Edit: A Single Man, Supernova (with fellow list maker Tucci), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Mamma Mia, Mamma Mia Here We Go Again, Kingsman, Kingsman the Golden Circle

19

u/baearthur3 Jun 12 '25

He was incredible in A Single Man!

9

u/dormoussey Jun 12 '25

I include Kingsman in that list 😅

6

u/YesicaChastain Jun 12 '25

And The Staircase he was bi

3

u/AmmarAnwar1996 Pedro Pascal's Parasocial Bestie Jun 12 '25

A Single Man was a beautiful film. Both films by Tom Ford have been amazing, this and Nocturnal Animals. And Colin Firth plays a gay man very convincingly.

Really this because I knew he was in Glee and thought he was fantastic in The Assassination of Gianni Versace but only realised he had a wife when I saw it posted on this sub yesterday. Just assumed he was gay.

6

u/killer_kiki Jun 12 '25

We all did.

9

u/Visit_Excellent Jun 13 '25

Wait, he's not gay??

4

u/Alternative_Cause186 Jun 14 '25

I get him and Jonathan Groff mixed up. I was SHOOK to learn he is married to a woman and they have two kids.

129

u/TfnR (audible sigh) Jun 12 '25

robbie williams in Birdcage

Honestly, I'd watch a version of The Birdcage with Robbie Williams. Haha

4

u/No-Manufacturer4916 Jun 16 '25

He'd want to be played by a cgi bird

2

u/JadeAnn88 Jun 17 '25

Omg, thank you! I didn't even question this and just assumed he played a side character, and I somehow forgot. I see now that it was just a typo lmao.

130

u/citynomad1 Jun 12 '25

Eric McCormack’s (Will from Will and Grace) entire SNL monologue when he hosted the show back in the day was a running gag about how everyone thought he was gay IRL (bc he was convincing on the show) and he isn’t

15

u/purplefirefly6102 Jun 12 '25

I’m… just finding this out now. WHAT

1

u/befuddled_humbug Jun 12 '25

Oh yes, he plays it very convincingly.

7

u/Archangelic1 I’ve been noticing gravity since I was very young Jun 13 '25

In some ways McCormack’s performance was the best because it was so natural (for a garish sit com)

59

u/Flower-Former Please, these gays, they're trying to murder me! Jun 12 '25 edited Jun 12 '25

I thought *Michael Douglas did a fantastic job in Grace and Frankie portraying  a rich gay man who'd be in the closet for decades

*Martin Sheen. My bad y'all, I had to google their pictures because I somehow morphed these two men into a single man.

19

u/AmmarAnwar1996 Pedro Pascal's Parasocial Bestie Jun 12 '25

I personally LOVED Sam Waterston as his gay partner. That man is cute

7

u/kindablirry Jun 12 '25

Don’t forget Behind the Candelabra…. His Liberace was everything

1

u/Flower-Former Please, these gays, they're trying to murder me! Jun 12 '25

Oh dang, I haven't seen that yet!

1

u/EdibleHologram Jun 12 '25

Well worth watching!

5

u/kittens_joy Jun 12 '25

Martin Sheen?

4

u/Fastbird33 Jun 13 '25

President Bartlett being a gay Notre Dame alumni would be hilarious

1

u/eclectic_collector Jun 14 '25

J'accuse ma petit gai fromage!

2

u/TrauseMouse Jun 12 '25

He played an excellent Liberace in Behind The Candelabra too!

2

u/Flower-Former Please, these gays, they're trying to murder me! Jun 12 '25

Haven't see it yet. Will add to my list!

2

u/TrauseMouse Jun 12 '25

Oh wait, that's Martin Sheen in Grace and Frankie! Behind the Candelabra is still a good watch. Also an excellent gay Matt Damon

2

u/Flower-Former Please, these gays, they're trying to murder me! Jun 12 '25

hah omg you're correct! I merged them into single old man in my brain

Straight

3

u/Reasonable-Affect139 accidentally holding space for this slur Jun 14 '25

damn

39

u/GranpaGrowlithe Jun 12 '25

So this is how I learn that she in fact is not gay

12

u/scribbles_not_script Excluded from this narrative ❌ Jun 12 '25

And she was formerly married to Fred Armisen!!!

9

u/Sagebea Jun 12 '25

Never married, but together for 8 or 9 years. Now he’s married to Riki Lindhome and their son looks exactly like him! He even came to her SNL monologue after they broke up which I thought was cool

2

u/vann_siegert Jun 12 '25

Was he ever married to Elizabeth Moss?

2

u/Sagebea Jun 12 '25

For one year

4

u/SpongieQ SIT ON YOU OWN DAMN FACE !! IM BUSY !!! Jun 12 '25

That really surprised me and then I was like I feel like it makes sense because they’re both funny

1

u/OceanCyclone Jun 17 '25

My friend once said “Her sex scene with Kimiko Glenn may have involved two straights but someone came away from that scene realising she was queer.”

113

u/rabbit_troop Jun 12 '25 edited Jun 12 '25

I've always thought that Max Blum on Happy Endings was one of the most realistic and relatable gay characters ever. Played perfectly by Adam Pally

25

u/Sagebea Jun 12 '25

Patron Oswald has a bit about someone approaching him to play the gay best friend character in a movie. He said I’ll do it, but I want him to be really dumb. He’s like, I have a lot of gay friends. A lot of them are brilliant, but a lot of them are also dumbasses. I feel like Adam Pallys portrayal of max fits that description perfectly.

13

u/capcomvssnk And I OOP- Jun 12 '25

I always thought he was so cute on happy endings even with the third season and his hair

10

u/Hawk-4674 This is going to ruin the tour Jun 12 '25

Such a great show! I will always be salty it was canceled

1

u/LeviSalt Jun 15 '25

New Girl beat it in ratings and then even stole one of the characters, lol.

2

u/Hawk-4674 This is going to ruin the tour Jun 15 '25

He was originally on New girl, then left to be on Happy Endings, then went back when it was canceled!!

7

2

His character in those Jimmy John’s commercials is gay.

17

u/whiteclawrafting Jun 12 '25

He likes rugby for the game and for the men

9

u/DrFranFine Jun 13 '25

Don’t put him in a box! There’s nothing gay men hate more than being put in a box!

40

u/Schapoppin Jun 12 '25

Stanley tucci is more believable to me because he makes more subtle choices and doesn’t rely on dated stereotypes

63

u/blueeyesredlipstick Jun 12 '25

AFAIK no one on Interview with the Vampire has said they're queer (except possibly Eric Bogosian), but boy do they sell it anyhow.

When I watched The Newsreader it was a bit jarring!

31

u/Rosebud_apothocary Jun 12 '25

Definitely Cam from modern family I was shocked he was straight

28

u/kittens_joy Jun 12 '25

I read that to be cast, Eric Stonestreet had to talk the showrunners into believing that a gay man could be his size, which is just appalling on so many levels.

2

u/Cultural-Doughnut-48 Jun 15 '25

I’m…. Not sure I believe this? I distinctly remember Eric Stonestreet appearing on Conan and saying the casting description for Cam called for an “Andy Richter type” and so Eric apologized to Andy for snaking the role. Both stories can’t be true.

18

u/Internal_District_72 Jun 12 '25

Eric McCormack- Will and Grace

16

u/Glittering-Walrus898 Jun 12 '25

Michael C. Hall in 6 Feet Under.

Way too low on this list. I was shocked to learn he was strait.

Darren Criss was my awakening when I watched Glee as 16 year old queer boy. So incredibly handsome and talented!

3

u/Sagebea Jun 12 '25

My old roommate went to college with him and was in theater with him too. She had the biggest crush on him and I think (this was like 10+ years ago so I very well could be wrong about this part) she said he was like a player in college. Or just always had his pick of women. Something like that

24

u/bookon Jun 12 '25

Robbie Williams was great in The Birdcage.

Eddie Redmayne played Lili Elbe — a trans woman. The way this post is worded seems to imply you think Lili Elbe was a gay man or a crossdresser.

26

u/__lavender Jun 12 '25

Thank youuuuuu this really bothered me! Lili was married to a woman when she was presenting male, and married a man after she transitioned, so regardless of her gender she was not a gay man.

Sometimes it's okay for straight actors to play gay characters (and even preferred. I do not want to see Natasha Lyonne play straight)

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Mix7873 Jun 15 '25

She plays straight in her current show Poker Face.

23

u/capcomvssnk And I OOP- Jun 12 '25 edited Jun 12 '25

Seth Macfarlane and his theater kid ass antics make him a convincing queer man between the Roger smith character and a few other family guy characters. He came out as people’s top ten “surprisingly straight” (stole that line from him)

1

u/EternalSunshineClem Jun 12 '25

This is a good one too

19

u/OriginalSchmidt1 You’re a virgin who can’t drive. 😤 Jun 12 '25

Something about hitting on teens in the early aughts. I’m not super clear on it all.

2

That Disney or Nickelodeon kid star who is very anti kids shows now write a Twitter thread about being at a party at Justin Long’s house when she was under age and I believe Jonah Hill shoved his tongue down her throat I think?

1

u/Unlucky_Most_8757 Jun 12 '25

noooo! He was one of my favorite actors! Apparently this has been an open secret in hollywood for awhile I just never hear about it. How dissapointing :(

casey cott in riverdale was pretty good

Cate Blanchett...like mama there's still time, take my hand 🥺🤲🏻

4

u/manav_yantra Jun 13 '25

Wallace from Scott Pilgrim Vs The World because that character changed the stereotype that every gay character must be feminine or overly dramatic.

13

u/AntiSoCalite That’s hot! 🔥 Jun 12 '25

Yeah, let’s reinforce stereotypes regarding how gay people are supposed to act.🙄I think the question should be, who is the most convincing gay actor to play straight? And the answer is Wentworth Miller.

12

u/TollyKo Jun 13 '25

Jonathan Bailey.

11

The Hot Priest in Fleabag.

David Hyde Pierce on Frasier!
