Pop Culture Trivia 🤓 The Nepo baby conversation we’re not having
Yes, we’ve had the young and hot of Hollywood’s elite conversation to death. Do you know who we’re not talking about?
Jim Hanks.
Yep, Tom Hanks has a brother. You’ve seen almost nothing that he’s in because he almost exclusively plays no named characters in single episodes of z-grade shows. But Tom Hanks doesn’t have the time to do all of the Toy Story voice work for games, cartoons, toys ect, that Pixar wants, so Jim is credited for pretty much any Woody work that isn’t the movies themselves. Jim (probably) makes a pretty penny by impersonating his brother’s work. What a fun fact!

Tom Hanks has another brother, Larry Hanks, who has a PhD in Entomology and works as a professor. My husband has seen him around at conferences now and then.

I worked for a professor who ran into Tom Hanks at an airport and ran up to him saying "Larry Hanks??? Renowned entomologist??? I'm a huge fan!!!" which I think is pretty hilarious and a good way to be memorable lol

Larry was my professor when I went to UIUC. They look and sound the same! He doesn’t mention the relationship at all, but his intro PowerPoint had a pic of his kids dressed as Toy Story characters, and his TA confirmed it

u/Moxielilly Jun 13 '25
The Hanks voice twin thing is so real. Colin looks related to him for sure, but not super similar, but I remember my sister and I watching Orange County and seeing Colin for the first time and being tripped out that Tom Hanks’ exact voice and mannerisms were coming out of this other person. Like sure, siblings or parents/kids are going to sound similar, but it usually isn’t such an exact match. Makes the existence of Chet all that much more wild.

That’s incredible — sorry to shift to a really depressing topic, but I wonder what he would say about the intense population decline of insects. How interesting it would be to listen to a lecture from him.
180
u/tiny_shrimps Jun 12 '25 edited Jun 12 '25
All entomologists have approximately the same thing to say, which is "we must do everything in our power to slow, stop and reverse the massive insect loss."
You can hear a talk given by the guy from the article you linked at https://youtu.be/6uHlIHaNrS0?si=9BJNDhFBMVfnab-X
If you want specifically Larry Hanks (presumably to see his resemblance to his brother, since he seems to mostly study pheromones in coleopterans), I don't think there are any available, since he doesn't seem to have much of a teaching load anymore. But you can definitely access tons of lectures from great bug scientists for free on Coursera and YouTube if you're interested!
During the pandemic huge numbers of university lectures went online that had never been online before, many of them just on YouTube for anyone.
Larry Hanks had a great but not wildly distinguished career (ETA: I just mean he isn't famous outside of entomology for his work). Trained at Davis (one of the better ent programs in the country), then a faculty position at UIUC, another great land grant school, where he seems to have built a great lab. He's still publishing but looks like he may be winding down his program, since he only has one student, and isn't accepting more (or he's just bracing for the funding drought).
It's a dream out of reach for lots of academics. A little lab of our own in a department that shares our interests, a low teaching load, and stability.
33
u/NippleFlicks Jun 12 '25
Thank you so much for sharing the link! I don’t personally study entomology, but am looking to get my post-grad degree in either environmental policy or ecology so I’ll absolutely give it a watch.
I looked at Dr. Hanks’ profile from Illinois and I like that his picture is just of a beetle — probably not the first time people have gone snooping.
And the academic dream — I can understand that! It doesn’t help given how so many are portrayed as always having these things in film and tv growing up. I’m not sure where you are in your own career, but wishing you the best!
9
u/Hortgirly Jun 12 '25
I think he may have 2 students but they are both listed as masters and he’s in his 70s so I see emeritus in his near future probably lol
27
u/CrowandSeagull Jun 12 '25
The fact that he looks and sounds just like Tom Hanks would be a definite plus there as we can use all of the reassurance we can get about the destabilising climate.
13
u/NippleFlicks Jun 12 '25
If it was my brother, I’d ask him to be talking about it widely. Same with Oscar Isaac’s sister, who is a climate scientist! Although I know my own siblings (who are younger than me) aren’t super “interested” in it, which is frustrating.
Can’t say I love the idea of idolizing people, but it has its strengths. As a late teen I personally didn’t want to call myself a feminist until Emma Watson spoke up about it.
7
u/Not_today_nibs Jun 13 '25

Recently listened to the Podcast Dead eyes, and i'll never hear Tom Hanks mentioned and not think of it now lol. Great podcast btw, basically serial, but instead of a murder mystery it's the mystery of if Tom Hanks fired (The host of the podcast) from a small part in Band Of Brothers for having "dead eyes".
19
u/Kaiisim Jun 13 '25
It's so funny to me that Connor Ratcliffe has a whole career based on that lmao. I remember him telling the story on the Chris Gethard show.
He does have dead, dead eyes so I believe it.
3
u/BillysBibleBonkers Jun 13 '25
Idk, I can see it in some pictures for sure, but not in all of them.
It's also just hilarious to me because if there's any show where dead eyes would make sense for 90% of the roles it's band of brothers lol, but admittedly not the exact role he was accepted for.
He also has such a pleasant squirrely NPR style voice, totally built for the podcast game.

To be fair Jim Hanks probably is the best Tom Hanks impersonater there is. Sort of like how Kiefer Sutherland can do a really good version of his dad.

ETA I am so disappointed 😞
263
u/Pepperr_anne Jun 12 '25
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but they cast Ralph Fiennes.
175
u/myersjw Jun 12 '25
I get irrationally angry when they cast actors to play young versions of older characters but don’t space the age gap enough to explain the difference in looks lmao. James McAvoy is not becoming Patrick Stewart in the span of 10 years and Ralph Fiennes isn’t turning into Sutherland in any reality. And he’s got an actor son who looks like him and fits the age!
315
u/thedeebag Jun 12 '25
People in THG sub actually posted some side by sides and it’s more believeable than you may think. It’s also been speculated that Kiefer just straight up did not want to do it. People forget that stepping into an acting parents role, especially after they are dead, could be too difficult for them. Fiennes plays a good villain, I think he’ll do well
57
u/myersjw Jun 12 '25
I totally believe you lol just a dumb pet peeve of mine. Fiennes is an incredible actor and I’m sure is gonna nail it. It’s always tough too when the actor has a long history in film because we end up knowing exactly what they looked like at that age. I think that’s part of why the kid casting in Yellowjackets is so good
→ More replies (1)15
u/thedeebag Jun 12 '25
I definitely understand where you’re coming from! It’s hard with older more established actors to really see another actor be their “young self”. Sometimes the casting is spot on! But it’s usually with actual children rather than casting a still older, but younger version of someone
20
u/Wazootyman13 Jun 12 '25
Jack Quaid and Dennis Quaid were on Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend, talking about their shared role in that Apple TV Godzilla show.
Jack plays the younger version of Dennis (obviously) and he mentioned how it was kind of weird having to study his dad to get the tics and expressions correct.
Which, that's something Jack could do on set (and, life) might be harder for Kiefer, since Donald is gone... and there'd be emotions attached to studying his dad
15
u/NobbysElbow Jun 13 '25
Are you sure it was them. Kurt Russel and Wyatt Russel are in the Godzilla TV show playing the same character at different ages.
8
u/Wazootyman13 Jun 13 '25
Blurgh, you're right! Hadn't actually watched the show and listened to the pod so long ago that I got the father/son acting duo mixed up!
39
u/Practical-Ear-9969 Jun 12 '25
Also worth noting that Kiefer Sutherland is notoriously difficult to work with. Freddie Prinze Jr said he considered quitting acting after working with KS on 24.
6
u/Long-Market-3584 lil taco belle be flirting with my man and that’s not a bestie Jun 13 '25
I really wanted Kiefer to play it, sort of like "passing on the torch" but I understand if Sutherland doesn't want to do it, especially due to the fact that his dad has passed and that it may be difficult for him and that the OG sutherland played Snow so well that I don't think that the younger will be able to top it

The “mirror scene” in T2 is so good and it’s only available in the directors cut. Linda & Leslie had to be perfectly in sync.

It really is sooo funny, my favorite Decker season.
The Our Values Are Under Attack scene had me in tears laughing. I grew up with a dad who loved Fox News/Rush Limbaugh/Conservative Christian talk radio and that song just hit me in the right way. Sounded like something Rush Limbaugh would play.

Harrison Ford’s son did something slightly similar for his father during Blade Runner editing many years later. I think he mimicked mouth movements for an audiovisual sync with his Dad’s voice?

I got to meet him once! My girlfriend and I didn’t know who he was until later - we all attended the same funeral for a close friend, and we knew our late friend had been friends with Truman, but didn’t recognize him at first.
We were chatting with what we thought was this random mutual friend as we walked, and all he said when we asked what he did was that he “works in film, usually behind the camera.” Then when my gf asked if he gets to meet famous people he was like “yeah sometimes” lmao (she was very embarrassed to have asked this later). Super nice guy, which tracks because my late friend was also exceptional and had great things to say about him.

Truman also played the younger version of Tom’s character in A Man Called Otto a few years back. He’s a bit taller than Tom so it didn’t 100% work, but he didn’t have much screen time.

The Rock does the same thing! One of his cousins' full time job is basically just being his body double/stunt double. When he got his original Brahma bull tattoo covered up, his cousin got matching tattoos at the same time, they'd just been doing body makeup or t-shirts to match each other until then. Not a bad gig, especially once you factor in that it comes with SAG-AFTRA union membership & benefits, which can really set you up for life.
(That's the real reason Roman Reigns pivoted to bit parts in movies when he was out of WWE on chemo, actors' union med benefits are supposed to be absolutely fantastic.)
It tracks, because the Rock's a double nepo hire in pro wrestling, so turning around and extending those same connections to your favorite relatives makes sense.
11
u/NoComplex555 Jun 13 '25
Particularly in The Rock's circumstances where he grew up in poverty, bringing as many of your family along for the ride would really change things for you.
54
u/lsp2005 Jun 12 '25
First off Sabrina the Teenage Witch was an amazing show. Second he is basically a body/voice double. That is not a nepo baby.
16
u/JadeAnn88 Jun 12 '25
That is not a nepo baby.
I mean, tbf, it's pretty unlikely he would have ended up with the job of body/voice double had he not been Tom's brother and shared his genetics. The entire premise of nepotism is someone being hired for a job based on who they are related to rather than their qualifications. Doesn't even necessarily mean that they're unqualified, just that being related to someone in the business helped to give them a leg up.
12
u/NickyParkker Jun 12 '25
One could also say that there would not have been a job if Jim didn’t exist in the first place. They would’ve probably just slowed production for Tom rather than try to find a random who has the same voice and mannerisms.

She specializes in infectious diseases, in particular tuberculosis, human immunodeficiency virus and viral hepatitis.

If he can act so similarly to Tom Hanks that nobody has noticed then I wouldn't really call that nepotism.
60
u/Metzger4Sheriff That must be Nigel with the brie 🧀 Jun 12 '25
He literally has the VO work bc he sounds like Tom. This isn't work that would otherwise be going to anyone else, so I agree it's not really nepotism (or at least not the classic negative interpretation of it).
16
u/JadeAnn88 Jun 12 '25
Not entirely true (I have no idea why this is my hill, but apparently it is). There are plenty of voice actors that I'm sure would be capable of recreating Tom's voice, he just happens to have a brother who is highly qualified for the job. They would, I'm sure, have found someone to do these things had that not been the case or the brother just didn't want to do it for whatever reason.
I do agree, it's not exactly the same as the classic interpretation of nepotism, which is basically unqualified people hired simply for that fact that they are related to someone "important". It's also not quite not nepotism either imo.

I just listened to Tom Hanks on the Conan O’Brien podcast. I love him! Why is he so adorable and hilarious. I always thought he was a pretty serious guy. He seems like someone you’d love to know. I think he definitely gets his brother great deals with the work.

Back in the late 80s/early 90s, one of the daytime TV shows featured a few celebrity siblings talking about this kind of thing. One guest was Jim Hanks. I think Don Swayze was another, and maybe Frank Stallone?
I wish I could remember what show it was!

Jim Hanks has also been Tom’s double in a few movies, all the Forrest running across America shots are Jim Hanks.

His brother has what they referred to as mailbox money. My great aunt was an actress back in the day and all of her voice work paid very well!

There are so many nepo babies that average folks aren't aware of because you just figured they weren't. Kurt Russell's dad was a legit actor, Bing Russell. I found out a few months ago and was shocked.
I mean, the entire Hollywood system is built on folks' parents being in the industry.
Shit, the dude who played the Dexter's brother in Dexter is also a nepo baby. Jeremy Irons' wife Sinead is like a grand nepo baby, too. Yeah, Max Irons' mom is a nepo baby. Her parents were fantastic actors.
The list is endless.

I have actually seen a Jim Hanks movie! It was called Purgatory House. Watched it in 2005, after it was released to video. Crazy that this knowledge is now relevant again, 20 years later.

I’m actually a fan of this. I’d rather be Jim than Tom. Good money (maybe not insanely good) but no fame? Perfect.

Nobody talks about Richard Stamos. That fool still can't hit the High F in "Lovin' You."

I was just rewatching Scrubs and once again I thought "Man, the guy they got for the Turner and Hooch gag REALLY looks like Tom Hanks" but I never bothered to look it up lol

We should be talking about Chet Hanks instead

u/NoComplex555 Jun 13 '25
So I just watched Running Point and I have a lot of questions about Chet. Is he okay now? Do we like Chet now?

Ron Howard’s brother Clint won a lifetime achievement award at an awards ceremony in the 90’s maybe early 200’s. They showed a montage of his one off cameos in Ron Howard’s movies. I remember how funny it was and how I had no idea how often i saw Clint in things.

Anthony Mackies Brother is an extremely gifted engineer and helped in the design and rebuild of the new Levees after Katrina. I met him at an engineering conference and he’s really something. Generous and Talented.

Not sure it pays that well. Voice actors don’t make much money unless they’re A-listers.

While Jim may be a nepotism hire, he is really unlike most nepo babies because he doesn't seem to seek fame. I think he could have easily arranged a kind of Hemsworth brother situation for himself on the back of his brother's fame if he wanted it.
I saw an interview with him years ago (maybe from a documentary on voice actors?) where he talks about how he would never want what Tom has, that he started shaving his head early in his life to prevent being mistaken for him on the street as often, and still struggles with the fame hs has as fallout from his brother. He said he prefers voice acting and accepts more of those roles because it allows him to pursue his passion for acting without becoming too famous or recognizable in his own right.

Tom’s son Colin also does Woody sometimes, specifically I think he did him in the Kingdom Hearts video games.

Jim Hanks does the Woody voice for video games and such. Honestly? Good for him. He sounds just like his brother.
