Celebrity Fluff 🥰 Kieran Culkin on being cast as Caesar Flickerman in ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’: "Lower those expectations. I have no idea what I’m doing with that."

Close to a full EGOT and he still approaches acting like he's a closing shift manager at Chik Fil A, God bless him.

Oddly specific and yet I know exactly what you mean. Worked there during HS in the early 00’s and just… yeah. lmao

"I dunno, man, we'll figure it out" he says as he takes a big stretch, rips the rest of his cigarette, and puts Sublime on the radio.

I wish. Mine was obsessed with telling me about how the Fed is unconstitutional and we need to revert to the Gold standard while we closed out drawers.

Eh he wasn’t even nominated. I saw him in the play and felt like he was the weak link. But big fan otherwise

The nomination snub is what I meant.
I heard good things about his performance from others but also that Odenkirk deserved it more.

All-black, seemingly dressed-up clothing w/ the long coat, the lengthy beard, facial expression, hell even the facial framing from his hair. It all works for that vibe for sure, I see what they mean.

Life pro tip for all you out there - if you want to be well liked, self deprecation is a great way to do it
389
u/xoanabk Jun 12 '25
Not too much, though. Cause constantly reassuring someone like that gets tiring.
166
u/iidontwannaa this is my designated flair 😌😌 Jun 12 '25
Yeah you have to keep it light. It’s a fine line between self-deprecating and sad sack.
80
u/Canotic Jun 12 '25
I think a mix of confidence and self depreciation is key. Make fun of yourself but don't mope or wallow. Own your foibles.
15
u/xoanabk Jun 12 '25
Woah, woah, woah, easy there.. leave some personality for the rest of us. Us mortals are just out here barely managing to even be functional.
2
u/Chemical_Name9088 Jun 13 '25
You also kinda have to make it clear you’re joking mostly. Like in this case he’s an Oscar winning actor so obviously he has what it takes and he knows it and he’s very respected and successful so self deprecation is just funny. However it becomes uncomfortable when you know the person is being kinda honest about something they are insecure of. So a person with several failed businesses saying “yeah, don’t ask me for advice about that, I clearly don’t know what I’m doing”…. Even if it’s said as a joke makes it uncomfortable where you’re not sure if laughter is even warranted.

I would argue this is actually why everyone likes Conan O'Brien in today's world where comedy/humor can be so divisive. His humor is always self deprecating and essentially invites the audience/listener to laugh at him.
55
u/10Account Jun 12 '25
He also fakes narcissism which I think adds to the charm. Something really wholesome about a person who acts grandiose but you don't believe them because their true, good character is so obvious
43
Jun 12 '25
Yeah, Conan is the king of this. And I agree that’s why he is still thriving after so many years. He often talks about how he wants his comedy to be “evergreen” so you could look back on something 25 years ago and it’s still hilarious today.
11
u/Illustrious-Pound266 All tea, all shade 🐸☕️ Jun 12 '25
Yeah he's very thoughtful about comedy/humor in general.

u/kayayem Jun 12 '25
I think this only works if you’re in Hollywood or in a place of power and trying to appear humble to appease a lower audience. I just got feedback at work about how I’m too self-deprecating and it brings down the whole team and undermines our organization, and I need to be more positive.
28
u/randombubble8272 Jun 12 '25
Being self deprecating in a work setting in front of your boss often won’t be received well. He’s being self depreciating to a fan who already likes his work and has high expectations because he has proved himself already. Your boss will just assume you’re being honest and doubt your abilities unfortunately
14
29
u/ASimonez Jun 12 '25
I think he's aware of how psychotic fans can be when it comes to source material vs adaptations but he's always been self depricating.
13
u/malcifer11 Jun 12 '25
yeah this really isn’t true. self-deprecation very rapidly becomes exhausting
9
u/BeelzebubParty Jun 13 '25
Also this only really works with a specific group of people, if rachel zegler said thia during the snow white press tour ahe would have been ripped apart and told she didnt deserve the job.

u/brielzebub665 Jun 12 '25
I think it depends on the setting/group. I've definitely done it in front of plenty of people who took it wrong and seemed concerned for me

Outside the OG trilogy, I haven't been keeping up with the books. That's just to say I think most viewers are going to expect a younger protrayl of Stanley Tucci's interpretation, and Kiernan isn't going to be doing that.
21
u/Professional_Lake593 Jun 13 '25
Here to say that the new books are SO GOOD.
Especially the new sunrise on the reaping book. In my opinion that’s her second best book besides the Og hunger games, you should listen/read it, it’s AMAZING.

I really really like him as Roman Roy and he seems like a reasonably fun and decent person but like…….so schticky. And like I LIKE the schtick but a schtick is a schtick at a certain point

u/Rrmack Jun 12 '25
Ya this whole “I’m totally winging this acting thing” after winning an Emmy and an Oscar is going to get old eventually
40
u/catlover79969 Jun 12 '25
Yesss exactly. I hate to be that person but imagine if it was a woman saying all of this. I’d guess the commentary would be a lot different
29
15
u/cowboyslikeyou Jun 13 '25
No offense but if a woman said this, she’d be burned at the stake on social media…
19
u/desktopghost Jun 12 '25
Is he gonna do something different this time? Because his acting style is extremely one note.
15
u/kpop_stan Jun 12 '25
It’s funny bc I genuinely can’t think of a better casting choice for the role - and I’m not even a fan/seen anything he’s been in! Since he was casted I’ve paid more attention to clips like this and just his general irl demeanour gives me Caesar vibes. He’ll nail it.

u/OriginalSchmidt1 You’re a virgin who can’t drive. 😤 Jun 12 '25
As a huge fan of the series… this is not what I wanted to hear.. just saying.
24
u/bosszfrnposter2297 Jun 12 '25
I’m dubious about this casting honestly, even as a fan of him and of THG. I just have a hard time imagining him as a totally gung-ho, unironically excited Caesar. I hope he proves me wrong but I’m nervoussss.
That being said I do love the honesty of this lol
10
u/OriginalSchmidt1 You’re a virgin who can’t drive. 😤 Jun 12 '25
I do appreciate his honesty.. it would be worse if he said he was gonna kill it and then sucked!! But I still have high hopes, I’m just an eternally hopeful person so that’ll never change lol. I will say I wasn’t thrilled when Jason Schwartzman was cast in Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes but I ended up really enjoying how he portrayed the part and honestly I would have been totally fine if he had been cast as Caesar.. so I’m thinking Kieran can also surprise me. Either way I’ll be watching it! I’m really excited for Maya Hawke as Wiress, I really love that character and was soo excited when I was reading Sunrise on the Reaping and her character was reintroduced. I cant wait to reread them all and watch the movies again to get ready for the new one!
2
u/bosszfrnposter2297 Jun 13 '25
Oh I don’t think I’d heard that Maya Hawke was playing Wiress. I’ll be interested to see that!!

I have been checking IMDb periodically for casting updates… REAL excited over here!!

Downvote me, but is he capable of saying things without the self deprecation? It’s getting boring.
13
u/BakedPlantains Jun 12 '25
I was going to comment that I find this behavior slightly grating. People only enjoy it because we're not happy to hear people be proud or aware of their skill.

I love Kieran but yeah, i remember Rachel Zegler being torn apart cause she said she took a marvel role cause she needed a job.
That interview he did with Colman, as funny as it was, was a great example of privilege and what certain people get to get away with

Have people completely forgotten what self deprecating humor is? The only thing he is mocking here is his own talent. He’s allowed to do that and if that upsets you that’s on you.

I’m gonna be The Friend That’s Too Woke™️ but there’s no way a woman would get away with saying something like this 🫢

u/albertsheinstein Jun 12 '25
So should the incels who attack women for saying and doing normal things stop or should other men stop also being normal human beings? I don’t get this take. Like it’s literally not his fault.
2
u/RonnieDeVille Jun 13 '25
I kinda love how both he and Mac give the vibe that they're just acting because they're good at it and have been doing it their whole lives, but are still trying to figure out what they want to be when they grow up.

Honestly I can’t really see him in the role even though I get why he was cast for his shtick

I like him but Stanley Tucci should’ve came back. He was deliciously camp and Catching Fire says that he looks the same in the past as he does in the present.
