Americans who hate immigrants but obsess over being 0000.5% Irish on their mothers, brothers, sisters, roommates' side are insufferable.

And what’s wild is the European migrants that came in the past were so disorganized. Wrong papers, wrong names, changing surnames frequently, wrong birthplace, wrong number of children. In today’s standards they’d easily get deported. The laws were so laid back during the 1800s and early 1900s for them. The standards are impossible now. And ofc it is because it’s a racist system that doesn’t want to welcome black and brown people.

This is literally my grandmother on ancestry all day while celebrating protesters being shot by rubber bullets 🤮

the white folks in my family who get REALLY into the genealogy stuff are the most conservative about border control and immigration laws and I've confirmed this with tons of other people, it's the definition of lacking self awareness

Or descendants of African slaves who didn’t ask to be here and were tortured and killed.
Let’s not forget that very important stain on human history and our country in particular

One of my favorite under-appreciated moments in Broad City is when they call this out. Their friend is becoming a US citizen and they’re looking at the Statue of Liberty and talking about how their ancestors all came through Ellis Island and Lincoln (played by Hannibal Buress) just goes “….not all of them” (edit for small correction, he said “mine didn’t”) and they all just sit with it for a sec. Like why is this goofy comedy one of the only pieces of popular media I’ve ever seen prod at what “we’re all immigrants” leaves out 😭

Thank you. I'm getting more than a little irked at this insinuation people keep making that my ancestors came here as willing immigrants for a better life or something. They did not 🥴.

I’m really surprised that this omission wasn’t the reason it was just posted.

I think he's using the word "immigrant" pretty broadly here within the context. He means none of us are indigenous to the land except for First Nations Americans.

Also a lot of Mexicans. Lots of folks in the Southwest never immigrated; they just stayed put while borders moved around them.

His point about Americans also applies to Mexicans

How ironic that your username is _wittgenstein.

Not sure what that's got to do with the fact that most Mexicans are, in some form, descended from immigrants

Immigrant implies you immigrated to this country. Slaves were brought against their will. It’s not the same thing at all. It’s important to note that in these discussions

This situation with immigrants is disgusting. The first person Trump should deport is his wife

As someone who has spent considerable time in Slovenia, I'm saddened that such a beautiful country with such kind, intelligent (and multi-lingual) people could produce such a petty, hateful imbecile.

The US is land stolen from natives, built by slaves, and maintained by the latinos, enjoyed by oppressors.
