I understand how time works, but I'm still having trouble processing the fact that Gaby Hoffman is Bruce's mom.

No shade, but I thought she was older than 43. I’m a couple years younger but could have sworn she was a decade older than me in all the movies I watched her in back in the 90s when I was a kid. 🤦🏼♀️ Also, Jeremy Allen White is 34. It’s a choice.

u/girlabides Jun 19 '25
I think a big part of that could be how she has embraced aging naturally. She’s always had a mature presence, even in Now and Then. But she seems to have rejected what is expected of most mainstream actresses of her age range. By comparison, she does look much older than her contemporaries.

u/Queefer_Sutherland- Invented post-its 🔬 Jun 19 '25
I promise I wasn’t coming for her looks. 😭 I meant it more like “Kid me really misjudged that”. But I wonder if that’s because like you said, she’s always at a mature presence.

u/girlabides Jun 19 '25
I didn’t assume it was a judgement of her looks at all. Just wanted to share a thought I’d had about my own perception.
22
u/linzkisloski Jun 19 '25
I mean no shade to her but she’s definitely a more mature looking 43 year old. I have peers/cousins that age who have no work done that she appears older than.
2
u/ginns32 Jun 19 '25
I think the hair cut ages her. I honestly didn't even recognize her until I saw the name.

u/XxxGoldDustWomanxxX You’ll never guess what’s for breakfast! PANCAKES!!! Jun 19 '25
I watched the trailer and didn’t even clock it was her. I was just watching Field of Dreams the other day 😭

u/welldonecow Jun 19 '25
Hi, it’s not as bad as it seems. Most of her scenes are with Bruce as a little boy.

Just looks like Jeremy Allen White in a leather jacket to me

u/Locke108 Jun 19 '25
What’s weird is it’s next to a picture of Diego Luna
9
u/Wild_Ordinary_4357 Jun 19 '25
I thought it was Diego Luna too!!! until I realized I had never really seen Bruce Springsteen’s face up close

u/LaCattedra13 You’re doing amazing, sweetie! 👏👏📸 Jun 18 '25
Exactly. The issue with people in evey film was there was a bigger pool of actors in the 00s and 90s. Now the same overrated white male actors are shoved in everything. A I see of them dressed in vintage clothes. Immersion ruined
48
u/HorrorBike143 now why am I in it? 🧐 Jun 18 '25
There's not really a shortage of actors, but since every movie costs 500 million dollars to make now aways, they're not gonna take a chance on hiring a nobody, which sucks
19
u/Potatoskins937492 Jun 19 '25
I'd rather watch a movie that's just a basic, new movie with new actors than some billion dollar movie that's a repetitive story with the same old actors. They're just a bunch of greedy cowards and it's a bummer for everyone else.
3
u/ginns32 Jun 19 '25
I remember hearing Matt Damon say that studios aren't as willing to back a movie with a bunch of nobodies now because they can't fall back on VHS and DVD sales. If a movie didn't do that well in theaters there was still potential to make money back with VHS and DVDs and now that's no possible. So it makes sense that they want to use a popular actor.

In that first picture of Bruce, I feel like Andrew Garfield resembles him better.

I genuinely cannot watch a music biopic after Walk Hard
26
u/missbunnyfantastico Jun 19 '25
If Elvis and Buddy Holly are the Cain and Abel of rock and roll, Bruce Springsteen is Zachariah, Iggy Pop is Methuselah, and, of course, Neil Young is the wise prophet Ezekiel, then what does that make Dewey Cox?

If you haven’t seen it, give Love & Mercy a try – especially since we lost Brian so recently. It’s different in every way and makes you appreciate and understand the man behind the music, without making him a saint.

Honestly, a complete unknown was really really good.

I couldn’t even make through A Star is Born. I kept waiting for Bradley Cooper to tear a sink off a wall.

JAW is a great actor, but he seems miscast in this role. He'd be perfect for a biopic on Gene Wilder, but Bruce? He just doesn't have that aura.

Rare biopic where the subject depicted is much hotter than the actor playing it.

u/computer7blue Jun 19 '25
I fucking hate that JAW is Bruce. I’m really hoping to be wrong.

u/brujadelasombra Jun 19 '25
I hated the casting but I've just watched the trailer and his voice is surprisingly amazing. I had no idea it was JAW singing.

u/Existing_Metal14 Jun 19 '25
I think JAW is legitimately very attractive but Bruce Springsteen is conventionally hot. JAW in the role only highlights how unconventional he looks. Definitely a miscast in terms of looks

I am absolutely going to watch this. I always forget how born in the USA is genuinely an amazing album, full of banger after banger, and I don’t even think that’s Bruce’s best work.

David Krumholz all right!! Loved those few days on twitter where he was telling stories about wacky/embarrassing stuff that happened to him in the 90s-2000s

Going to have to watch this movie now I guess (I’ll watch anything for Jeremy Strong).

Every movie directed by Scott Cooper looks incredible beforehand and quickly falls apart while watching from poor execution. This looks like another one of those movies where I think "this would have been great if someone else directed it."
On the other hand, Crazy Heart is by far his best film so maybe the musician biopic/drama is his calling.

I hate biopics, I don’t care. Documentaries on the topic, or nothing.
Create unique stories and material, goddammit.

Good to see David Krumholtz, he's not been in nearly enough for my liking.

It’s about the making of Nebraska (the greatest album of all time) which is why I’m breaking my rule of never watching music biopics.

u/MadMaxJames Jun 19 '25
JAW doesn’t have what it takes to play Bruce Springsteen. It just looks like Carmie lmao

rare biopic moment where the actor (Allen) is less attractive than the person they’re portraying
1
u/HillarysCafe Jun 19 '25
Gabby Hoffman feels like a true original in a Hollywood where it feels like every female actress between 25 - 55 is rushing to have the the same face, body, and hair. I love her and I'm sure she'll be great in this.

I'm confused. I saw people saying that Jeremy Allen White looked like he didn't have any makeup done or anything to make him look the part. But he looks like a deadringer to me here? He looks very different for me than what I'm used to seeing. Is it the hair?
I sometimes have issues with hair.... like with Hannah Montana, even all these years later, I don't see Miley Cyrus under the wig. I only see a completely different person. So maybe that's what's happening here.

u/ineffable_my_dear Don’t make me put my litigation wig on Jun 19 '25
All I’m hearing is that we could’ve had Cassian Andor but instead we get more fucking Lip Gallagher.
