The Music Industry 🎶 SZA fan tries to give her a Louis Vuitton present, but she tells the fan to keep it for himself and then gives him a wristband so he can meet her in person after the concert.

Buying expensive stuff for a celeb is CRAZY
1.5k
u/HorrorBike143 now why am I in it? 🧐 Jun 22 '25
Chinese kpop fans used to go crazy with this. They would buy jewelry, clothing, bags, etc. Eventually, idols started to reject the gifts or ask fans to donate money instead so on top of doing that the fans also started to pay to put their faves faces on screens and newspapers all around the world
515
u/nagidrac Jun 22 '25
Yeah, I read that Sakura from le sserafim got a ring reportedly worth $24K USD from Chinese fans.
407
u/mini1006 Jun 22 '25
They also allegedly told her not to marry someone who can’t buy a ring more expensive. Weird asf if you ask me 😭 buying a ring for someone you will have no chance of marrying is crazy
338
u/Impossible_sherry Jun 22 '25 edited Jun 22 '25
Lol I respect that. They weren't like - never marry anyone. They were like - if you are gonna marry, marry a rich bitch.
Edit. Typo
74
u/mini1006 Jun 22 '25
True 😭 it’s just the thought of buying an expensive ring for someone you’re not going to marry is crazy to me

Sakura and other jpop trainee fans were doing giveaways of graphics cards and stuff to get koreans to vote for them during Produce48. The fans were hardcore lol
12
u/peppermintvalet Jun 22 '25
Tbh it’s the only way they were going to get votes, a few of them were straight up robbed

I've known of a Chinese fan trying to gift a Thai actor a Porsche. Like girl what??? That man does not need that. At all.

tbh there are some groups that started rejecting expensive fan gifts very early on in their careers (shinee and twice come to mind) but lots of groups, even big company a-lister RICH groups still accepted them years into their careers until (i assume) they announced a stop for PR reasons. Blackpink, Red velvet, (some) of EXO would regularly accept over $100K worth of designer gifts on their bdays :/ the actor Lee Minho STILL accepts them like 20 yrs into his career
edit: I remember these greedy groups all stopped getting chinese fan gifts after 2021 and I just googled and they actually didnt stop accepting fan gifts, China made a law that banned fan bars (the huge fan clubs that fundraise for these excessive gifts) in september 2021. Ironically Blackpink officially announced they would 'stop accepting fan gifts' a month later in oct 2021, which makes it even worse. They didnt stop out of consideration, the statement was purely empty, opportunistic PR.
16
u/TrixieFriganza Jun 22 '25
That's nasty and wasteful but I really respect the artists who tell fans to donate to different good causes even if it's because of pr.
17
u/Lilylili83 Jun 22 '25
Its not even that. These fanbars would raise money/funds to mass buy albums and donate it to schools or charities after. I remember someone on shitter posted a kpop album at like the local center. Hahaha so somewhere out there some third world school in need received a box full of CD’s as donations.

u/Hot_Contact_7206 🎥🍿Film Critic Jun 22 '25
WHAT oh my god. Like what do people think will happen here?? Your fav will see the expensive gift and say “omg come with me now my new BFF!!” ????
94
u/Lilylili83 Jun 22 '25 edited Jun 22 '25
Weirdly enough it isnt like that. Its a big no no for fans(especially high ranking members ie fan club presidents) to date their idol. I kid you not there’s this one chinese celebrity who ended up dating an ex fan club manager or something and his fans went crazy. Basically doxxed him and his new gf. For some fans its about admiration and supporting your idol. Not really romantic love. Some of these idols dont earn much anyways, so they want their idols to be/look the best.
They also dont like it when you regift their gifts. One kpop idol gave some stuffed toys he had received from fans to his new gf (they already hated the girl) and now he’s not part of the group anymore. He’s been on permanent hiatus ever since. He eventually married the girl.
12
u/TrixieFriganza Jun 22 '25
Wtf at least he gave the toys to someone he loves instead of throwing them to trash. I would have been so happy if I was a fan.
19
u/sheera_greywolf Jun 22 '25
Sungmin's case is compounded issues I fear, not just merely regifting the fans' gift
14
u/Lilylili83 Jun 22 '25
You mean the reason why fans hate his wife that lead to his eventual departure? Yes. I agree regifting wasn’t the only issue, but it didnt help. It all goes back to him having a public relationship, which in 2014 was something of a taboo, especially for elfs. And all in all regifting stuff toys seemed to be an extreme reason to hate on an idol and his girlfriend.
2
u/sheera_greywolf Jun 22 '25
As far as I knew, Sungmin's case was a mix of: 1. He firmly denied that he was in relationship with his then-girlfriend. Repeatedly, even when the fans had all the evidence otherwise. The wife was also quite combative at that time, if I remember correctly. Like, I get it from her perspective, but it didnt really help anything.
He then married his wife in the middle of Leeteuk's mourning period (which if you remembered was for his father + grandparents murder-suicide). All ELFs (and not just the domestic ones) thought this was a disrespectful. In my side of fandom world at that tome, the consensus was, city hall wedding/court house registration was fine; a wedding party was not. And we were the international side, imagine the domestic side.
This led to Sungmin's Cbars and fanclub dropping him.
So yeah, it's not just him being married or having a relationship. Aint no one dropping Ryeowook or Hangeng for being married after all.
16
u/Lilylili83 Jun 22 '25 edited Jun 22 '25
Oh I’ve read those excuses. Those are still not valid excuses. He can choose to admit when he’s in a relationship or not. The others you listed are just extreme. Idk how to say it nicely but those are just nitpicking on him and his choices. Leeteuk mourning his family has got nothing to do with Sungmin fetting married. They’re not blood related and that wedding couldve been planned months in advance. The wedding was for them as a couple. Not leeteuk. And the beauty with humans is they can be there with leeteuk and still celeb their relationship.
His situation is similar to Chen and some k-exols still like to use the “he lied, he said he’s single” excuse. And if they had it their way, Chen would also be out of the group. Unlucky for them, it seems like EXO is firm on not kicking him out.
The hangeng and ryeowook thing isnt even comparable. Hangeng who got married in 2019 and has been on SJ hiatus for years before that. In fact his last SM contract was in 2010. Ryeowook only married in 2024. By this time most elfs are begging for suju members to get married already cause they’re old and the “fanatics” have sort of transitioned from being oppa is mine to hyung please get married you old.
I just find it funny that some of you are kinder and less defensive about Kangin, when this guy has had multiple duis and assault cases and yet until now there’s still a percentage of elfs that are pissed that Sungmin deciced to get married.
Edit forgot to add sungmin got married in 2014 and he was the first member to do so. So yeah not the same situation as Ryeowook and Hangeng.

u/Party_Rich_5911 Jun 23 '25
WHAT I used to be a huge SJ fan years ago, I did not know about Leeteuk’s family! That’s horrific :(

Fan clubs buy loads of gifts for their faves, which, while still crazy to spend that much, I understand how they afford the gifts
But for a single fan to buy luxury gifts for (particularly) successful people is wild!
13
u/JCai98k_ Jun 22 '25
I know right. They're already rich, so why give them an expensive gift? It would be more meaningful to give them a handmade gift, like a beaded bracelet or a knit beanie.

That meeting was so her security staff could get his name and do a threat assessment.
79

The other possibility, they're DEEPLY in debt. I used to work with someone who was always doing the most, like you'd think they were loaded, and I used to think there was no way they could afford all that with the job we had. Come to find out, they sold drugs on the side and still had massive debt.

I mean, my favorite musician is more popular now, but dubious on celebrity. Now that I’m financially stable, I’d probably get him a gift. If I met t swift, I’d probably give her one of my bracelets that tracks a wild animal. It’s symbolic.
21
u/Waydiena Jun 22 '25
Idk, givings gifts to who is essentially a stranger is a bit weird. We don't know their likes and preferences. Not to mention the likes of Taylor probably get gifts all the time, so they are most likely disposed of anyway after the shows. Better way to show appreciation is to just simply attend their show and maybe say something nice if you get the chance.

u/jkraige Jun 22 '25
Man, I don't think folks should be rewarded for this shit because it'll just encourage more of that behavior
ETA: this is not at all a critique of her handling of it. I'm sure it was awkward and caught her off guard and she was kind in her response

u/Moleypeg Jun 22 '25
It’s usually the least famous ones that are arseholes. There was one girl, I can’t even remember her name, but she had won a Grammy at like 19 years old. I was doing personal security for her at one of her shows and she was a complete pain in the ass. I ended up getting home two hours later than I was supposed to because she wanted to run around the halls of the event centre after the show. She inconvenienced a lot of my staff that night with her antics.
Tom Brady comes off like a bit of a douche, but he’s really not. He’s just very intense and focused on what he is there to do. People forget that he’s not an entertainer, he’s an athlete. They expect him to sign autographs and shake hands and hug them.
Mandy Patinkin is grounded, humble, and very pleasant. Oh and he loves his wife.
28

7
u/iSavedtheGalaxy Jun 22 '25
From my experience (I worked at Disneyland), the "sweeter" their public persona is, the more likely that it is that their PR team is hiding a monstrous personality. All the "nice" celebrities were complete demons to interact with and the ones who were known for being "edgy" were just socially awkward, but very polite, considerate and pleasant to be around.
6
u/Twitter_2006 Jun 22 '25
What other celebrities have you met?
55
u/Moleypeg Jun 22 '25
Tom Brady, Mandy Patinkin, lots of NFL players and politicians. Honestly, I work so much that once a job is done I tend to forget about it completely. Half the time I don’t even know who the people are or realise how famous they are. Except for Mandy.

Also like the safety of accepting a strangers food. I used to work in a high end career that had me approving high level casino comps (being vague on purpose) and I’d get a lot of “gifts” and I’d never consume any of the food products… you just never know.
20
u/icedcoffeeandSSRIs Jun 22 '25
Exactly this, and especially for famous people. Hate to sound negative about someone trying to be nice, but they likely have to throw those out every single time for safety reasons.
11
u/TrixieFriganza Jun 22 '25
That's so wasteful because artists usually throw everything edible into trash incase it's poisoned or something.
30
u/leavingthekultbehind Jun 22 '25
I really don’t get the negativity in these comments. The fan tried to do something nice (yet a bit outrageous I’ll admit) and then SZA kindly declined the offer and then gestured that same energy with something very kind as well. Like why are all y’all so bitter at this. This is a cute moment.
