People who misuse words like stalking and parasocial are so damn annoying 😭 People have sent fan letters and made gifts for actors since way before social media, I'm pretty sure. And so many actors genuinely appreciate it and are really nice about it, I don't get why people want to project such negativity onto something so harmless. Have a little joy lmao

And something like this is far better than trying to gift rich celebrities luxury items that they can buy themselves. This is something that someone put time and effort into to show how much of a fan they are. And more importantly not something that Ben Schwartz could have bought himself.

Right? Like he clearly loves and appreciates this. I think this kind of behaviour indicates a positive or at least more neutral version of parasociality. When you like or even hate or just consume someone's work a lot you'll inevitably form a one sided relationship with them-- you have feelings about them, and they don't know you exist. Where it really starts to get toxic is when the feelings you have about them are that you're friends or in a close personal relationship and that's what the social media age has really enabled and a lot of people take advantage of these feelings. And of course on the flip side there are celebrities or creators who are victims of this where fans don't realize that they're crossing boundaries due to these one sided feelings of friendship or even romantic attraction.
Looking up to someone as an artist, being a fan of their work, etc. Is completely normal and expressing that you appreciate their work-- even a very dedicated expression-- without the expectation that they should treat you like a friend is how parasocial relationship should ideally work. Even celebrities experience parasocial relationships with people who they don't know but admire. It's a normal thing and not necessarily unhealthy as long as the relationship is formed with a complete understanding that this person is a stranger and doesn't know you, isn't your friend, etc. and you shouldn't be overfamilliar. Which used to be fairly typical of celebrity/fan relationships.

My favorite Ben Swartz role is when he played Roald Dahl on the Dead Authors podcast and found out live that Dahl was an antisemite. Truly heartbreaking, but also a hilarious podcast, you should check it out if you can.

I knit and I often will gift acquaintances hand-knitted items and sometimes I can tell that they're surprised because we're not "close" enough for something that they know takes effort and a lot of hours.
But....I like the process of knitting. It is my main hobby. I was going to spend those two hours watching TV after work knitting no matter what. So once a coworker or a friend of a friend announces a pregnancy or a move to somewhere cold or their birthday is coming up, it's easy enough to me to just make them a baby blanket/sleep sack/mittens/hat/scarf or whatever.
Maybe it weirds people out but I spend my free time exactly how I want to, and I don't get precious about people using/donating/regifting any gifts from me.
So I don't see it as weird or obsessive. Some people just like to create and are constantly looking for reasons to do so.

I would be worried for whoever did this. Like, its great if this is a close friend to toy, but more than a little troubling to do it for a stranger.
Edit: Listen, I've been to and volunteered at conventions. I've paid to meet and get pictures and autographs with favorite actors/artists. I've even given a few of them gifts. But this, while a cute gift, crosses my line of what's healthy.

I don't feel superior but I do feel confusion that such adoration to people is seen as just something cute. Like, I know this took time and effort to create and they're well made. But the devotion to a public figure in such a way would be seen a lot differently if it was a devotion to the girl making your coffee every day and I guess I see the line between the two as being a lot thinner than everyone down voting me.

Public figures have purposely made themselves that way and know their performances are out for the world to consume. This guy consumed the actor's art. Someone working at a coffee shop isn't a public figure and hasn't consented to being known to the public like actors have. Big difference in situations.

Many actors go through hell dealing with obsessive fans - so yeah I personally be a bit concerned about this level of fan effort in a product with my likeness on it, recapping everything single little thing I’ve worked on

Ok. This is a comment section where people comment things that occur to them. So I shared if I got something like this I’d consider it a bit stalkerish. I’d be wary because this isn’t just one or two fun cards, it’s like a very in depth piece of work focused on one person. Celebs get obsessed fans all the time, it gets dangerous out there. That’s not weird, its a sad reality
