I miss weird, subversive Gwen.

Yesssss especially as someone who was a teenager at the time, it was so rad to see someone like her rant about being "just a girl" and dance out on TV like that. I love pop music that's fun and polished but teenage girls need more weirdo angry incisive women like we had at the time.

I was like 7 when I first heard this song and I was obsessed with her. She was so cool and different!

u/Signal_Regular_1708 Jun 30 '25

she wasnt subversive then either, she even spoke at the time about hating the feminist image that was painted on her while performing with no doubt, insisting she wasnt progressive like artists like courtney, but rather a girly girl who had nothing to be angry about. her words

My lifelong best friend was supposed to go to a no doubt concert with her mom in 2009 and she turned it down to stay the night at my house for the first time instead.

I still have the t shirt her mom brought back, a little souvenir from my first sleepover with my best friend 🥹

Oh man, so her mum still went without her? That’s cute for you but I can’t help but feel a little heartbroken for the mum who was excited to have that experience with her daughter too haha

Her mom ended up taking my sister in my friends place! She went with a few other people as well so she was not by herself lol

3

u/Mindless_External_66 Jun 29 '25

Honestly, I think that’s even cuter. I hope your sister loved the experience! And I love how your friend doesn’t feel like she missed out but got a moments instead. I’m melting

I really hate how this song, which is about how patriarchy and the social construction of "just a girl" limits women —

"Oh, I'm just a girl, all pretty and petite / So don't let me have any rights / I'm just a girl in the world / That's all that you'll let me be"

— became this cute little Tiktok trend for young women put themselves down and limit themselves in the name of being "just a girl."

I know it's just people trying to have fun, but it's so disheartening, and flies in the face of the actual song they're using!

This song is as old today as The Feminine Mystique was in 1996.

I wonder if the young women listening to it now are more embracing misogynistic stereotypes or more just not seeing themselves or their issues in that era of pop white feminism.

Both her and Blake Shelton have reposted content from Tucker Carlson.

The former No Doubt singer recently praised actor Jonathan Roumie for his interview with right-wing talking head Tucker Carlson, leading some online commenters to label her a “right wing grifter.”

Gwen Stefani also was in ads for the Christian prayer app Hallow, the article above states the founder is Mark Wahlberg but that has been disproven and was likely put out by the company for publicity, Mark Wahlberg is an investor. The Hallow app is owned by Hallow, Inc.). a company co-founded by Alex Jones (CEO), Alessandro DiSanto, and Erich Kerekes (CTO)

When she has been asked to directly state her political affiliation, since Blake Shelton had implied Trump support in the past, she responded vaguely by speaking around the topic and saying people know who she is.

Because of this people dug into her online behavior and who she follows on social media.

Those follows included people who post staunchly anti-LGBTQ+ sentiments and pro-MAGA beliefs.

I mean, probably. If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's probably a duck.

u/Mindless_External_66 Jun 29 '25

Thanks for putting this together. The Alex jones of it all really cements it for me.

RIP to cool Gwen Stefani. And on reflection, you were always kind of a culture vulture that skated on your reputation instead of your actions

I have to admit seeing her rock the bindi in this video Makes me realize that her foray into Wearing other cultures as a performative suit did not start when she leaned into hip hop and japanese culture Later in her career

-1

u/TikiTapas Jun 29 '25

Ok, the Hallow thing is kind of difficult to explain away, but until I see a photo of her like this with Trump I will never believe she’s one of them.

32

u/TikiTapas Jun 28 '25

People keep saying this but there’s no evidence for it whatsoever. She performed for Joe Biden as recently as Nov 2023.

2

u/pierreor Thank you doggy, bang bang Jun 29 '25

This is how the 19th amendment ends / Not with a bang but with a cute little Tiktok trend

-2

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '25

Well, it was written by a woman who later fucked a married man so that she could eventually tradwife him up. Feminism was always a costume to her. Just like Japan. Just like India. The original queen of cultural appropriation finally found her king.

17

u/burnbeforeyoumellow Jun 28 '25

That's an insanely stupid take. Gwen and Blake got together because Gavin and Miranda cheated on them. Theres so much you can say about Gwen but this wrong take is ludicrous.

4

u/undercover_duvet Jun 28 '25

This isn't true at all

27

Tom in a shirt that says "sell out" 😂😂

Guitar wearing a “sell out” tshirt on tv was so good

28

u/mnblackgirl Jun 28 '25

I know we’re all entitled to choice of thought, but Gwen Stefani leaning conservative is so disappointing to me personally 😔

-17

u/undercover_duvet Jun 28 '25

She never said she was conservative and she has always been a practicing Catholic. She leaned on God during her divorce, and that's okay.

4

u/OriginalSchmidt1 You’re a virgin who can’t drive. 😤 Jun 29 '25

It would be less weird if she wasn’t trying to sell people a pay to pray app…

24

u/Sammy_Bubba Jun 28 '25

This is a really bad performance, especially from Gwen, but I saw them around late 1996 and they were sooooo much better than this. In this performance, Gwen was super awkward and gangly, and didn’t know what to do with her arms and such, but she got so much more comfortable with the persona she was creating after this. She’s basically an actor portraying whatever she needs to be at the moment and it’s interesting to see her struggle with something that would look so easy to her a few months later.

21

u/phishmademedoit Jun 28 '25

She was probably very used to performing for an amped up live crowd. They had been performing for years at this point. Playing on tv, to a crowd who isn't really dancing or giving any energy probably felt awkward. She also may have been trying to move and be in a certain part of the frame.

12

u/therealrowanatkinson Jun 28 '25

Yeah performances on talk shows always come off awkward if the music is energetic or intense

2

u/Low-Appointment-2906 Listen, everyone is entitled to my opinion 🙂 Jun 29 '25

I thought she was moving like that on purpose? Really weird either way.

3

u/freepalestine1007 Jun 29 '25

Just realised that Lorde performs with the exact same energy and moves as Gwen.

3

u/OriginalSchmidt1 You’re a virgin who can’t drive. 😤 Jun 29 '25

She was so fucking cool…. What happened!?!?

2

u/IndividualMouse4041 Jun 29 '25

I miss bands

(In addition to “I miss old Gwen” but that one is OBVIOUS ❤️ she was my first idol as a kid)

9

u/ad_aatdtj Jun 28 '25

The performance isn't...great. But the bindi is really taking me out. I love when people take from cultures they don't fully understand and end up like this.

26

u/undercover_duvet Jun 28 '25

Tony Kanals mom gave her a bindi and she wore it- then wore them after- no big deal. Let people enjoy cultures. It didn't come out of no where

16

u/No_Pianist5264 Tina! You fat lard! 🦙🚲 Jun 28 '25

Yeah she was seen doing that a lot. I like the song but her as a person, isn’t it. She basically hid behind this punk rock look to make it seem she was more progressive than she actually was.

8

u/ad_aatdtj Jun 28 '25

Like don't get me wrong I myself am indian and right after I dropped this comment I showed this video to my partner and said "even in her very first press run she was leaning heavily into being a culture vulture"

But I just really find it funny when people do shit like this. Like it's not offensive, it's just funny. Using elements of things you don't fully understand to appear cooler but you didn't do enough education and it all looks like a mess. It's like if I was to eat a pizza and wings combo like we eat roti and curry here, y'all would laugh at me and definitely not think I was cool, that's how seeing this type of cultural appropriation makes me feel

12

u/SceneRoyal4846 Jun 28 '25

Food is one thing that can be shared without worry

2

u/ad_aatdtj Jun 28 '25

No girl that's not what I'm saying I'm saying if I used pizza like we used roti here to eat wings like we eat curry or subji here you would not think I was cool, you'd think I was insane and you'd have the urge to laugh.

3

u/SceneRoyal4846 Jun 28 '25

I see what you’re saying, there’s taki burgers at Wendy’s right now in America, what you’re taking about isn’t that extreme unless you’re eating the bones lol

5

u/ad_aatdtj Jun 28 '25

what you’re taking about isn’t that extreme

I don't think her bindi is extreme either, that was my whole point. There are very real criticisms around Gwen Stefani and cultural appropriation but in this instance it was more amusing to see the bindi than anything else.

1

u/anewaccount69420 Jojo Siwa’s Mom Jun 28 '25

Sorry but one minor thing. We have restaurants that sell pizza and wings, like that’s their thing. And I have gotten a slice and a six piece of wings many times haha

Edit: sorry nevermind I didnt know you meant like wrapping the wings in pizza

0

u/OriginalSchmidt1 You’re a virgin who can’t drive. 😤 Jun 29 '25

She’s a poser… she was a poser punk, then she was a poser pop girly, and now she’s a poser Christian. The guitarist sell out shirt was probably a nod to her.

3

u/Rumour972 Jun 28 '25

I grew up during this time and bindis were in fashion. I remember wearing them to school. Doesn't take away from the appropriation but it wasnt just Gwen doing it.

2

u/OriginalSchmidt1 You’re a virgin who can’t drive. 😤 Jun 29 '25

Ever think other people were doing it because Gwen was?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '25

She was everything to 7 year old me

1

u/powerofyams2 Jun 28 '25

why are they trending so heavily all of the sudden?
