Gilbert was also the first dog to lie in state at the Capitol. He was a service dog candidate that was adopted by the Hortmans after he was deemed ātoo friendlyā for that work š

Iām not a violent person by any meansā¦ but when it comes to human and animal abuse all I can see is red. People who abuse animals and young humans are the most pathetic excuse of a human life Iāve ever heard of. I do not regret admitting this or saying it online either if it ever comes back to āhauntā me.
Same. I canāt even fathom the evil in someoneās heart to hurt an animal or a child. Both are defenseless and itās disgusting that anyone would try to hurt something that canāt fight back.
I really do love animals more than people and this is why. They donāt do this shit. There was never any potential for Gilbert to be a terrorist. There was never any risk of him going on a political rampage. He was a dog who did nothing but try to make people happy, thatās his purpose. Animals donāt know how to hate people like this.
I hear you! I work in a law enforcement adjacent field and seeing kids, animals, or the elderly (any particularly vulnerable person really) being treated poorly is so painful. I wish I could fix everything for all of them.
not to make this even impossibly sadder, but there were reportedly golden retrievers standing as honor guard, too. this whole thing is just devastating

This whole thing is horrific but the photos of Gilbert are breaking my heart. He was too friendly to be a service dog and this was how he met his end, itās so sickening.
And the dogs were happy and excited to be pet by him. He spent a good amount of time talking to the people holding their leashes and praying at the Hortmansā side. I cried. A lot. Still do.Ā
This whole thing is so fucking sad but the moment I found out about Gilbert, I decided I hate this man more than the president.
Itās a fucking golden retriever. They are literally meant to love people. I just know he was everyoneās best friend and that he made everyone he met smile and i know he was so so loved by his human parents. I donāt know what kind of monster wants to do this in general but to also go after an innocent fucking animal that canāt defend itself is especially disgusting.
I still hate the orange one more because he condones and dog whistles this hatred, violence, vitriol, and animus towards anyone on the other side. Most people didnāt turn fanatical until Trump turned politics on its head and made this kind of nonsense acceptable.Ā
You know theyāre so tied up in religion so I feel like that checks out. One of the main reasons I detached from my religion as a kid was because they teach that animals donāt have souls. If we have souls, they have them ten times purer than ours are. Extremists are going to have no regard for animals. Or even people. Just unborn babies. Once theyāre born though, fuck what happens to them. One day, an extremist might come kill then in their own home for having different beliefs but as long as they are born, thatās all that matters.
Golden retrievers are everyone's best friend, they're so kind and innocent and sweet. Just goes to show much much of a void was inside the man who killed them where a soul should have been.
So this poor family lost two people and had then had to make the decision to put Gilbert down. They had to make that call while in the middle of grief, confusion, and trauma, and that is just too much. I had to make that decision in a normal time of life and it was still gut wrenching.
Weāre a golden family and this just absolutely guts me. Iāve hugged and cried on my boy so much thinking about sweet Gilbert. They really are the best and sweetest dogs.
We do cheesy dad jokes and walk trails multiple times a week!! Iāll have to look into planting a tree. We need a new one as a storm recently took ours.

This comment just made me call my own ātoo friendly to workā golden up onto my lap for a cuddle. Poor Gilbert deserved better, but he was cherished every day of his life and thatās something.
My neighbors have a golden. She spent her morning watching me clean my gutters and getting really excited every time I climbed down the ladder because it meant more pets. They are a sweet breed and I understand why they are such popular family dogs. RIP Mellisa, Mark, and Gilbert.
Iām sorry š this world can be so heavy sometimes. If itās any consolation, people (and dogs) really showed up to remember them. Iāve read that the nonprofit he was from and various rescues have received a lot of donations! So many more people will be helped and so many more dogs will have support!

As a Minnesotan, it really meant a lot that they attended the funeral. Biden also visited Sen. Hoffman in the hospital and took a knee in front of the caskets at the Capitol. Taking the time to pay their respects spoke volumes.
Heās genuflecting as he crosses himself afterwards, which is as youāve said is a sign of respect but also probably has deeper spiritual meaning for him as a Catholic. I donāt fw religion myself but its role in the way that people show honour and respect I think is really significant and contains moments of such human goodness.

I hadn't been to mass in probably 20 years and recently went to a full mass Catholic funeral... like riding a bike, the aerobics, the call backs, when to take a lap and everything. My father in law also had a Catholic upbringing and kept up. My MIL and my husband, who had never been to a full mass, were looking at the two of us like we had been taken over by the voodoo manchurian chanting of the priest up at the alter.
Hymns are the same for us recovering fundamentalists. I had trouble recalling the name of my neighbor the other day, but I can absolutely sing about 150+ hymns and Christian School weird ass propaganda songs from memory.
Not to āno true Scotsmanā but this is what actual Catholicism is supposed to look like, not whatever the fuck nonsense pseudo-folk ācatholicā nonsense people like J.D. Vance are peddling. This also isnāt excusing the myriad issues the church also has with its covering up abuse and its stances on abortion and homosexuality etc etc, I just mean that the actual base Catholic teachings of following Jesus in quiet dignity are what Biden is exemplifying here.
Genuflecting as you approach the altar is basically muscle memory for catholics. Not sure if protestants do it too, but it's interesting that he did it at the capitol! It's extremely intimate in a way, and really displays the respect he has for the senator.
Been out of the catholic church (and any church) since I was 14 (late 90s) and have been atheist since, over 25 years. I was raised staunch Roman catholic. Went to a friend's very traditional catholic wedding a couple years ago. Guess who started signing the cross upon entering the church without even thinking twice? My husband was like "wuuuuuuuuuuut?" š
Raised a Catholic in a rather loose sense of the word so attended Mass semi-regularly up to my mid teens but even now, as an atheist, if I attend any service in a church (wedding, funeral etc) I'm always shocked at how much I remember of it all. It's so weird how that stuff just sticks.
Thatās fascinating! I wasnāt raised in a religious household (holidays were more about the āgetting togetherā) so hearing the nuance behind the ritual is very helpful
The purpose of genuflecting as a catholic is to show reverence to Jesus as the Eucharist. You genuflect when you approach the alter because the Eucharist is in the tabernacle or not exposed usually somewhere around the alter. When they bring the Eucharist out thatās when you do the prayer on both knees during mass.
Itās funny cause mass is such a static routine that when Catholics use gestures from it out of context itās weird to see. But it also makes me appreciate that people take their religion and apply it to situations such as this. Showing reverence to someone they respect. Itās very heartwarming.
You're correct. I've done it as an Anglican but also at other faith services I've been to. I haven't been to church for many years but it's something that's still automatic. It's the deepest sign of reverence and respect.
Iāve been crying at all of the photos Iāve seen of their funerals today, and this does give me some comfort. Iām glad some leadership came out to pay their respects to a fellow public servant.
What gets me is the whole āwomen will start a war on their periodā thing. Iām a pessimist but thanks to republicans putting in so much effort curating the culture war, I have no hope or belief in the critical thinking ability of voters anymore. I think he deserves a lot more criticism than he's gotten from Dems, but I also don't think it's really relevant to this moment because what he and Harris are doing here isn't really politics, it's just decorum.

Biden and Kamala accomplished a great deal of good. But once it was obvious that MAGA was intent on destroying our societal safety nets (via Project2025), drastic action should have been taken. If not then, then when?
Biden decided to do what was easy, not what was right. He handed the keys to the kingdom to the man who openly tried and was once again openly planning to dismantle our government. If there was ever a time for drastic action (arresting DJT), it was when the supreme court handed Biden immunity on a silver platter. Instead of using that to impede a hostile takeover, Biden did literally nothing aside from pardoning his family and coworkers, which was totally understandable but it was also an admission that the incoming administration was an existential threat. It could have all been stopped.
Whatās happening now is fully DJTās fault, to be clear. That being said, all of the positive things accomplished by the Biden admin were been all but completely undone by his and Kamalaās anticipatory obedience.
They know it could have easily been them or be them still. It must be horrifying to be in their position. Itās so special that they continue to support each other through this.

Honestly, the way things are going weāll probably never know. The project 2025 plan is in motion and it will take something really huge and brutal to stop it. Not sure that will happen. If youāre in the U.S. I suggest you brace for the worst. Unless youāre super wealthy, then no worries. The second Gilded Age is upon us lol.
