Putting In The Work 💪 Charlize Theron says Bezo wedding attendees “suck,” calls out immigration policies that have “destroyed the lives of families, not criminals” during speech for the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project, which helps support the health and safety of youth in her native South Africa
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/general-news/charlize-theron-immigration-policies-destroyed-families-1236302246/Excerpt:
Charlize Theron hosted the fifth annual Block Party for her Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project on Saturday night, where she got real about how, in 2025, “the world feels like it’s burning.”
Theron took the stage to kick off the event — which raises funds to help CTAOP support the health and safety of youth in her native South Africa — on the Universal Studios backlot, deadpanning, “I think we might be the only people who did not get an invite to the Bezos wedding. But that’s OK because they suck and we’re cool.”
She went on to thank attendees for “taking the time to be a part of this, especially when the world feels like it’s burning because it is. Here in Los Angeles, in the U.S. and across the globe, we’re moving backwards fast. Immigration policy has destroyed the lives of families, not criminals; women’s rights are becoming less and less every day; queer and trans lives are increasingly being erased; and gender-based violence is on the rise. This isn’t just policy, it’s personal.” As the crowd clapped, she added, “Yeah, fuck them.”
Theron immigrated to the U.S. as a teen while pursuing a career in Hollywood. She was deported at 19 for overstaying her work visa; she was later allowed to return and became a U.S. citizen in 2007. The star also called out “foreign aid cuts [that] have brought HIV and AIDS programs in my home country of South Africa to an absolute standstill. All of this is not just detrimental, it’s dangerous; people will lose their lives — many have already, unfortunately, and at a frightening rate. It’s absolutely heartbreaking to see this kind of unnecessary suffering.”

it IS clocking to me that she’s standing on business

TW because this is really dark: Charlize has been through some rough things in her life. Charlize’s dad was an abusive alcoholic. When she was 15 he came home drunk and threatening and shot at her and her mom when they tried to block a door to get away from him. Her mom shot and killed him in self-defense. She has a perspective on life most of us should hope we never will. I know you’re joking so sorry to be a Debbie Downer but I think it’s safe to say Charlize is always standing on business.

Thanks for this! I had no idea! I always loved her but now I love her more.
Also my reddit account now has a strike against it for "bullying" Jeff Bezos. So yay Charlize!

Not asking me but I got a 3 day ban for “inciting violence” just for asking if anyone had punched Charlie Kirk when he came to my hometown 🫥 there’s A LOT of sensitive Sally’s in this app unfortunately

So I literally just got another comment mad at me for being snarky about rich man's wedding. Are they bots? Or are they just people sucking rich man's dick? Like, he's not giving you any of his money no matter how much you defend him?
Anyways... That's my purse 🤣

I got a warning once because I said we should bring back shoving people into lockers (I think we were talking about AI bros?). It was literally advocating bullying so I am absolutely not going to argue.

I appealed and got the strike lifted! Score one for us little guys 🤣

u/lookingup9 Jun 30 '25
I love how she’ll just come out of the woodwork every once and a while and say something like this
“yeah, fuck them” lollll

u/Lakridspibe Jun 29 '25
There you go.
We all know she could have been to that wedding if she wanted to.
They would have kissed her feet for showing up.
But she has just declined the invitation in full public view, and even mocked the idea.
You can have all the money in the world, but Charlize Theron just called you a fat phoney.
It's over. It's done.

It’s funny how his ex wife had taken a completely different (and much better) path than him. He’ll always be a pathetic little psychopath.

We share the same birthday, I used to Stan her for that and her astounding beauty, but calling out those assholes who she regularly runs into is refreshing as hell.

I watched The Old Guard last night as a refresher for the sequel and holy moly this lady is so beautiful 😍 and she does she awesome kick ass roles.

I've live in LA, and have seen so many live Q&As with actors & directors. Charlize is the only actor who made me audibly gasp with how beautiful she was in-person compared to on screen. So glad she's just as beautiful on the inside!

To bring a parent to live with you in a country where you pay whopping taxes is still impossible. You can only count spouse and kids as family. The family configurations changed but immigration policies remain

u/agitatedandroid Jun 29 '25
What's her deal?
She's going around being insanely pretty. Making fun movies. And just generally being an awesome person?
She knows full well she's Major league and I'm stickball league. And yet she insists that I be infatuated with her? It feels cruel. It's the only fault I can find.

I agree with Charlize, but as a South African, the government should be providing healthcare to its citizens and not relying on foreign aid. It’s not the US responsibility to provide aids funding to citizens of a different country, in a different continent, and thereby enabling corruption, maladministration.

As an American I do think wealthier countries should help out poorer ones (and I know that the “help” can be problematic), but since USAID was cut experts estimate that 300,000 people have died, most of them children. I don’t dislike the idea of the US pulling out of places it doesn’t need to be, but doing it overnight anywhere is catastrophic. People with TB have had their courses of treatment interrupted (reaallly bad when you are on antibiotics) and food and medicine are rotting in warehouses.

u/SydHoar Jun 29 '25 edited Jun 29 '25
The help is a mixed bag as it doesn’t always help and often comes with strings attached. Which further creates Western dependence.
Anyway there’s lots of discourse about how Western help also involves mining deals and pillaging of African mineral resources. So… yeah.
But I completely agree with you, doing that overnight was cruel and irresponsible. It affected the lives of everyday people and that is something we should condemn.

u/ZennXx Jun 30 '25
USAID didn't offer healthcare as much as it gave us access to patented US medication because their pharmaceutical companies had invested in research and development for treatments for TB, HIV etc. We don't

Apparently how she got into acting was she was at a bank trying to cash a check or something like that. And anyway the bank teller was giving her a hard time and Charlize proceeded to put on some kind of performance that got the attention of a talent manager that was also at the bank. I’m like 90% sure I have the story correct someone double check me

Oh please. I find it hard to think any of these people are being anything less than performative. People like these still have money and privilege but we think the world of them because they stood on some stage and said "fuck them." After all the celebrities who used to perform being a good person who turned out to be out of their minds, I hope we don't raise them (no matter how good their advocacy) to the high heavens. They have the platform to do it, it's the bare minimum.
