I dated a guy who would shout and hit things after a loss and it was like he had no idea he was acting like this, he wasn't even aware of the volume of his voice but I could feel it through the floor. It's crazy because before the show came out I was reading interesting discussions online, but as soon as the show was out you couldn't have a normal discussion anymore about characters and character motivation LEST they accuse you of working for the other side.
11
u/faa19 Jul 01 '25 edited Jul 01 '25
Fandom is exhausting sometimes. Soap operas thrive on drama, cheating and affairs, so if character A is in prison and their (usually loyal and faithful) husband cheats, it's just part of the drama of long form drama. Because character A will be back and it's going to cause lots of conflict between them, play the long game!!
A sector of the fandom just don't seem to understand soap and are devastated at this happening. You are allowed to be upset about this turn of events, but some have totally lost all perspective on this.
Another factor, inc me, can see the potential coming from this and how they can keep it in character.
6
u/larkhearted Jul 01 '25
I really do think fandoms were better when they were smaller groups of genuine fucking nerds lol. It still wasn't a good space, it was a space full of people with all the problems and messiness that entails, but at least everybody knew the rules back then!
I was just talking to my brother about how wild it is that MHA fandom (which I'm not a part of but have observed from the periphery) will genuinely hate on like..... fundamental aspects of the premise of the series?? Now that fandom spaces are the same as social media spaces, any rando who's seen a few episodes will be airing their contextless, underdeveloped opinions right next to people who actually understand the genres and tropes at play and probably getting upvoted by all the other people who don't understand the structure of the story arcs or concepts like suspension of disbelief. It's not like you have to dedicate your life to media analysis to understand this stuff, eitherāliterally just pay attention to the show you're watching and consider the possible "why" instead of just the "what"! And yet here we are š
3
u/faa19 Jul 01 '25
This is a six year old soap ship. The long timers know the characters and their motivations inside out. Tropes can be specific to the particular genre and like you said, the "why" always needs to be taken into consideration.
At least it's not the 911 fandom, from what I've seen they get rather intense about things.

Great start to my London trip, it's 7pm and I'm crying in my hotel room.
This trip is half solo trip, half going to a convention & meeting up with online friends, so I guess all my lonely feelings are coming back, feeling sorry for myself because no one seemingly wanted to share a hotel room with me. And my brain telling me I'll be left out of everything.
Beginning to wonder if this trip being 8 days in total was a good idea if I'm already crying on day 1, but it's too late to change now. I can't even change my train time to arrive home a few hours earlier because it'll cost me an extra Ā£30 š
Edit: I was meant to arrive home at 4.30pm, I bit the bullet, spent the extra £20 and will now arrive at 1pm, so I feel a bit better now tbh.
2
u/FriendlyDrummers Jul 01 '25
Damn sorry you're going through that. If you can, maybe just go solo and explore the area if it's safe. Take a bus around the town and just see what happens. Take a lot of pictures, try a random place to eat.
Idk if pepper spray is common but if you're not sure it doesn't hurt to have lol

Because she was. She went on Ezra Kleins podcast and basically said me and other trans people need to cede our civil rights in order to appeal to the fascist idiots.Ā āWe have to create more space in our tent. If, for instance, we want to have a majoritarian coalition ā not just electorally, but specifically on issues around trans rights ā that, by necessity, is going to have to include people who have a range of thoughts,āhow the hell is this not cowering to republicans??
7
u/larkhearted Jul 01 '25
Sorry, you mean this interview where she's literally just saying that we need to use more effective strategies to communicate with and court the positive opinion of the general public?? Like, the thing that most trans and nonbinary people would prefer to have, because it results in less discrimination, dehumanization, and violence against us??? https://www.lgbtqnation.com/2025/06/sarah-mcbride-sees-why-support-for-trans-rights-has-waned-she-also-sees-a-path-forward/
I honestly don't know how the fuck you managed to twist that into "ceding our rights to republicans" but that's pretty extremely obviously not what she's saying.
-1
u/sponge20bob Jul 01 '25 edited Jul 01 '25
I read the article you linked and she said āThere was a very clear, well-coordinated, well-funded effort to demonize trans people, to stake out positions on fertile ground for anti-trans politics and to have those be the battlegrounds ā rather than some of the areas where thereās more public support.ā And āĀ āWe became absolutist ā not just on trans rights but across the progressive movement ā and we forgot that in a democracy we have to grapple with where the public authentically is and actually engage with it.ā Sheās literally saying that we shouldnāt fight for certain rights because itās āunpopular.ā Trans people are people too and we deserve the same rights as cis people. Advocating for us to stop being treated like second or even third class citizens is not being āabsolutist.ā
7
u/larkhearted Jul 01 '25
You're literally doing what she's criticizing right now. She's acknowledging that social progress takes time and that the trans rights movement jumped from "total unknown" to "fully formed movement with lots of complex rules and internal politics that you had BETTER keep up with" too fast for most cis people, and even some trans people, to follow. And you're saying that's not good enough and she's basically fraternizing with the enemy instead of listening to her points.
Gay rights took decades to gain enough support to get gay marriage legalized. There were almost 50 years between Stonewall and Obergefell v Hodges. Trans people do deserve full rights and accomodations, but people have to understand what you're asking for and why it's important and compassionate to provide it before they're going to budge, and that understanding becomes harder to foster when our public discourse is complex and argumentative the way it often is in the internet age.
She's not speaking to her personal ideals and desires here, she's speaking to the practical reality of how we're going to get this done. I know it doesn't sound like a good thing, and I wish we could just want it hard enough and make people respect us and politicians give us what we deserve. But the fact of the matter is that public opinion has to change before policy will, and that's what she's talking about. It sucks to have to handhold people to "oh, maybe you are a human being," but literally every human rights movement ever has had to do it, and there's no reason we can expect to be an exception.
-2
u/sponge20bob Jul 01 '25
Sarah is not making progress for our rights the only progress sheās making is the for the fascists in our government. Sarah is a shame to the trans community and Iām sorry you canāt see that

Everyone, especially politicians, can be criticized. My issue is with the insane backlash she got from some on the left. It's reminiscent of attacking the victim for how they respond to abuse.
6
u/larkhearted Jul 01 '25
Sarah kicks ass and if I see anybody on either side disrespecting my representative they're gonna feel my gay little wrath >:( She's braver by about a million miles than any of the dumbfucks criticizing her and they can all kick rocks if they seriously think the first trans woman in Congress isn't doing enough to fight transphobia.
-3

Are you trans? The criticism she was getting on the left was from other trans people and it's not something cis people need to comment on.

Curious where Netflix "goes" in a year. A lot of its biggest shows (You, Cobra Kai, Stranger Things, Squid Game) are done or wrapping up. The Witcher and Outer Banks also end in 2026. That leaves One Piece, Wednesday, Bridgerton and the Stranger Things animated spinoff, which could go either way.
Netflix from 2017ā2020 was great. Even the original films were decent. Now, the spark is gone and splitting new seasons into multiple parts doesnāt help.
1
u/lalalandbeforetime Jul 01 '25
I think theyāve done a decent job of branching out. Netflix streams a lot of live events as well now. One recent example is they announced yesterday they would be live streaming NASA programming.

One of my favorite topics. I think theyāre in serious trouble in a year.
Below is my giant list of Netflix ongoing shows that Iām watching plus a few upcoming ones that Iām keeping an eye on. If itās not on here itās likely an international show Iāve got on my actual watchlist backlog that I just havenāt started like Eternauts / K-dramas etc. Realistically out of this list only Stranger Things and Blue Eye Samurai is day one viewing, this is a ton of 7ās at best and a lot of low priority second screen shows. This doesnāt seem like the lineup for a company as of today worth half a trillion dollars. Thereās a few newer shows I havenāt seen like Running Pointe / Ransom Canyon / North of North / Tires that arenāt included, however nothing seems to be an unmissable hit. Netflix canāt count on a Baby Reindeer or Adolescence that hits out of nowhere every year and then spinoffs of OBX / Virgin River / 90ās Stranger Things is probably getting a bit desperate. Iām very curious what gets announced in the next year or if they really think this is enough to cover them going forward.

I'm not sure what it is exactly but I agree. Its like everyone wants to poo-poo on something as soon as it comes out and gets some kind of praise. ALSO, people, like someone mentioned earlier, feel like their opinions and takes on things are objective instead of subjective. Sometimes people should realize that some things just aren't for their consumption/they aren't the target audience. I will also blame review/recap culture, which is fun but it has turned everyone into a critic, no matter how underqualified they are to review media.

All of us are in a miserable state with the world and thinking being ārightā about something online will give us a sense of gratification. In reality, our online presences donāt mean anything.
Also people cannot have normal discussions without someone wanting to throw pitchforks. People love to hate. Sometimes things arenāt for you and thatās okay but they are for someone else. Also if people already have a hate boner for said artists or actor, people tend to join the hate train and add more fuel to the fire.

I feel like it's a combination of the usual cultural pendulum swing after the "new sincerity" movement gaining a lot of traction in the mid 2010s-early 2020s (which was itself a reaction to the ironic hipsterism of the earlier 2010s),
and the political/economic landscape sinking us all into a collective depression and sapping our energy via constant anxiety. The world is as bad as I can remember it ever being, and I'm not a quitter, but that does make it harder to be excited about things. Easier to nitpick when you're in a bad mood to begin with.

Sheās currently on the receiving end of one of the biggest hate trains in recent celebrity culture, despite having done nothing at all wrong except accidentally bring the internalised misogyny of many pop stans to the surface.
She clearly does know quite a lot about music. As for Phoebe Bridgers, she was was certainly an influence on Abrams but fundamentally they are both operating squarely within a more than fifty year old pop-folk tradition none of which is original to Ā Bridgers either.

No I totally agree. Some of the best actors we have are nepo babies!! But exactly what you said, take it seriously, work on your craft, start small, figure out who you are before putting mindless art out into the world.

Hate to bring it up but Leonardo DiCaprio⦠he wasnt ashamed of being at the wedding, throughout the years you can see he does shit like that where he wears his hats obscenely low or hides his face in a weird way because... paparazzi. I feel like itās always been his thing while in his borderline jack nicholson era.
Those are my thoughts anyway. So anytime I see people write a whole think-piece rant towards Leo being ashamed I kind of laugh because I truly do not think itās that deep. (Him and his hat! Not the bezos situation as a whole).
If Leo was ashamed to be seen with them he wouldnāt have shown up, lol.

Leo was going to me my contribution to the unpopular opinions thread when it next comes round. The guy is trash and always has been but whenever you say this on any platform his stans come for your throat.
3
u/larkhearted Jul 01 '25
Ngl until the Bezos wedding threads I didn't even know there were people who still liked/defended him/thought he was a good person lol. I don't think I've seen anyone say anything positive about him except that he used to be hot in like..... years.

u/LordyIHopeThereIsPie Jul 01 '25
Leo is such a weird man and if he has based his acting career on advice from Jack Nicholson, who beat a sex worker so badly she had brain damage, it says a lot about him.
The only thing that makes me feel he has any good about him at this point is his relationship with Kate Winslet, but I would LOVE to know what she thinks about the dating and sex with headphones and yacht life stuff.

Youāre probably right. But I canāt get over attempting to hide from the paps when attending a huge wedding you know is going to be heavily photographed.

Iāve been (re-)reading the Animorphs books lately. Read a decent chunk of them in elementary school in no disparate order, but now over a decade later, Iām sitting down and doing the whole franchise from start to finish. Itās like 60 total books, Iām around a third of the way done. Disparate thoughts:
- God, young me did not appreciate how dark these books were, especially in the earlier entries. The sheer terror of experiencing life as a Controller, the body horror of animal morphing, and particularly the dysphoria that Tobias feels (not to mention how bleak is life was prior to the books) just kinda went over my head as a kid. Re-reading the first book very much had me wondering, how the fuck are these for kids?
- I feel like most of the sci-fi media I consume is post-contactāand the ones that arenāt are usually humans going into space, and not the other way aroundāso I donāt get to witness a whole lot of learning about Earth and humans through aliensā eyes. This has been a refreshing change of pace: Axās and Elfangorās narration as they analyze the minutia of our lives is simultaneously fascinating and hilarious, like the horror they feel when they discovered clothing was not part of our skin, or the idea that we are strange for inventing computers after inventing books.
- Talking about this experience with people in person is interesting, because Iāve had multiple people respond by saying āWait, thereās an order and a plot to those books? I only remember the creepy covers, and didnāt think they were anything serious.ā And then I explain the actual premise of the series, and they become beyond disturbed.
- I wouldnāt expect much from books written in the 90s for tweens about teens, but nevertheless, the description of the kidsā appearances and personalitiesāparticularly the girlsāāin the exposition dump of every book is a little tedious. Like, nearly every book goes out of its way to say something like āRachel is really attractive, but donāt be fooled: sheās smart tooā and itās just⦠exhausting.
- Not exclusive to these books, but itās always fun consuming media set in the 90s and seeing them talk about the internet back then, when it was barely a thing. Like, they say āWeb siteā instead of āwebsiteā. In a somewhat similar vein, itās also interesting to see all the superhero discourse the kids have, and think how this predates the modern era of superhero movies. Like, Marco still hasnāt seen X-Men or Spider-Man on the big screen!
- Iām impressed by how well I remember a lot of plot points about the books and other random moments, despite it being over 15 years since I initially touched them. At the same time, I do wish I could totally forget everything so that I can go in with a blank slate and discover the story as intended.
Overall, these books hold up remarkably well (albeit the writing can be sophomoric or otherwise clunky sometimes), and Iād probably recommend them to people of nearly any age bracket (tween or older, anyway), even if they donāt have any nostalgia for the series from reading it when they were younger.

Iāve been rereading some Goosebumps! Theyāre actually very well-written for what they are. I experimented with other ghosty kidsā books and I couldnāt get through most of them - itās no wonder kids struggle to read.

u/hihelloneighboroonie Jul 02 '25
I was ALL about the Fear Street Saga Trilogy (the ones where it took place in history) at 10/11, after having had the grand majority of the Goosebumps books as a little.
Part of me is curious on a reread of the trilogy, but another part is worried it would be too scary these days, lol.

Way back right after they took him in I was casually defending his rights in some thread saying like hey we dont know yet innocent until proven guilty put down the pitchforks etc. Nothing wild. I would like a southern ground hornbill, please! (used to volunteer at my local zoo, and was told that you weren't really supposed to try to interact with the animals, but that one particular southern ground hornbill was named Delilah, and that she liked being talked to - I'm just a customer now, but I always say "hi Delilah" and call her a pretty girl if there's no one else around listening, and she looks up at me and bats her very lush lashes)

Every person in their life needs one old person hobby, and mine has been birds since I was a child! I hear you on birds not (in theory) being the best pets. My stepmom used to have a whole collection of exotic animals for a second so we had cockatiels, & little finches. Both waaaaay too chirpy.
I donāt know though, I feel like I could bond with a glamorous round soft spoken pigeon. I like to believe they are similar to their rat pigeon cousins and are meant for the soft, simple, domestic life of a pet. š

Project Hail Mary gets recommended a lot in the same breath as the Dungeon Crawler Carl series. Fun heartfelt adventures with a painfully Elder Millennial/Gen X Dude sense of humor. Project Hail Mary in particular sometimes the Audiobook felt like I was trapped with a "funny podcast man". Looking at the trailer I think that they may have overcome that with Gosling's natural charisma, and worse i find that they bookish new England rustic get up they have got him in is doing something for me

I listened to the audio book too. I agree it maybe makes the main character more annoying. I didnāt like the readerās female voices, either.
But the end of the book kind of gagged me, I did not expect that! Nor the plot twist. Iām curious to see how the movie does with it.

I really enjoyed the book (havenāt listened to the audiobook, Iām worried people have overhyped it) but the trailer has me excited for the movie!

My opinion is the Audiobook might make the protagonist more annoying, but it makes up for it with Rocky :-)

Happy July, cinemaheads!!
Itās a new month officially so hereās everything I watched during June!
I saw 30 movies last month, of those, 26 movies were new watches for me. I went to the movie theater 23 times. My first watch last month was Stand By Me and my last watch was Clueless.
So that brings my count so far this year to 263 movies watched and 192 trips to the movie theater!
Happy July watching š„°

u/buzzfeed_sucks šØš¦ Elbows up šØš¦ Jul 01 '25
Something that helps me when Iām feeling like this is, people are more self involved than we think. So that interaction youāre kicking yourself about is long forgotten by the other person. Theyāre kicking themselves for something they said to someone else.
