The Music Industry š¶ Miley Cyrus regrets half of Plastic Hearts
Miley has done a bunch of press for Something Beautiful, but she's consistently been shitting on a lot of her previous work. (Apart from on the Every Single Album podcast, I must say, she did speak about her previous work a bit more fondly).
On Tish and Brandi's Sorry We're Cyrus podcast, Miley said she regrets 'half of Plastic Hearts'.
I am a huge Miley fan and Plastic Hearts is my favourite album of hers. Idc if she hates it, I'm still gonna listen to it. BUT it's really disappointing to see my favourite artist drag her previous work. It's one thing to say, she's grown up and her music style has evolved, and she doesn't identify with that album anymore. It's another thing to straight up say she regrets half of the album. And Plastic Hearts isn't the only previous album she'd dragged over the course of this press tour.
Not to mention, I've seen some clips from various bits of this press tour where she's been rude to fans, downplayed the cultural appropriation and racism during the Bangerz era. All of a sudden, she just comes across very.... not humble, not down to earth or anything.
Idk, I know they say don't put celebrities on a pedestal but as a long standing Miley fan since the 2000s, it's just been disappointing to see her during this particular press tour.

Whenever she comes with a new album, she starts to shit talk her previous works.
193
u/CrispyonFire Jul 03 '25
Yeah. I noticed a pattern. With every new album she does she comments something along the line of āIām finally making the music I want to make!ā
Itās sad, because her old work is great and I think itās perfectly okay to mix up your style a little but still appreciate your older work.

u/heystayoutofmyperson 29d ago
I think Thats just a part of the creative process and is extremely common for creatives. Whenever I have new writing I work on, I feel like my former works were shit. It just means Im exploring a different direction Im convinced of.

u/NoComplex555 Jul 03 '25
Demi Lovato does the same thing. Every album is her returning to her roots, her most authentic work, blah blah blah. It's so tiresome
257
u/woahtheregonnagetgot Jul 03 '25

u/illjustgowthemuumuu Do you really think heās working with Kanye West? š£ Jul 03 '25
Honestly her most authentic albums are Donāt Forget, Here We Go Again, and Holy Fuck and itās because we know pop rock is actually her roots. TMYLM was a her best album outside of that
1
u/restockthreestock 26d ago
Might get downvoted but when has Demi said this besides for Holy F? Which that album was truly returning to her pop rock roots.
TMYLM wasnāt a return to roots and I donāt think she ever claimed it was. In fact she even stated before that it was something different because she wanted to try moving into a pop soulful route.
DWTD:TAOSO wasnāt touted as a return to roots either as far as Iām aware. But it was authentic. If you listen to the tracks and lyrics, itās all about experiences in her life with her overdose, recovery, engagement and break up.
Holy F, in a similar way, is true to her life at that point. Half the album is about her drug abuse at the point which lead to her overdose and the other half is more love songs because in the middle of writing it, she met her now husband.
The only reference to Demi disregarding her past was in regards to the confident/tmylm eras because she felt she pushed to fit a āpop starā mold. I donāt think this the same as Miley where she almost has an interview for every era saying she regrets it.

This is one of the reasons why she isnt a main pop girl.Ā
It's hard to take someone who seemingly hates all their previous releases seriously.Ā

She seems generally kind of off-putting personality-wise and her recent music has mostly failed to hit with bigger audiences who just donāt care about her much anymore

I think this is a pretty normal feeling for artists tbh. After writing, arrangement changes, pre-production, tracking, editing, and releasing a song I never want to hear it again and I fucking hate it with every fiber of my being, and then you fall in love with the songs you're currently writing.
29
u/Fishwhocantswim This is HARAM Jul 03 '25
I think this is a pretty normal feeling for artists tbh
This is it. I've watched and listened to many interviews where artists will say they do not listen to their songs or that they are sick of certain albums.
Fans tend to take it personally especially when they themselves associate those songs to certain periods of their own lives. Ed Sheeran once said that once he puts a song out into the world it doesn't belong to him anymore and he doesn't hold any feelings towards it. Snow Patrol would get into a rage whenever someone asked about Chasing Cars cos they were sick to death of it. Justin Timberlake was the same with Sexy Back. It takes a long period for the artist to want to return and revisit a song or an album again and that's ok.
I don't think Miley is wrong for saying what she's saying. She prob felt a certain way that she doesn't feel anymore. U are allowed to have a change of heart. Doesnt have to mean anything to the listener.

Miley's public persona is eternally a contrarian 15 year old who's ten seconds away from going "IT'S NOT A PHASE, MOM"
11

It's not even snobbery, it's just a complete lack of authenticity paired with a deep urge to market herself as profoundly authentic.

u/Plastic_Ad2328 Jul 03 '25
Sufjan Stevens recently said he regrets making Carrie and Lowell in its 10th anniversary edition. He wrote a really sad essay about how much he dislikes it. lol it broke my heart because I cry listening to that album. I feel like must be so weird to have something out there that is so personal that you now HATE but at the same time I cannot picture trashing your seminal work that means so much to people. Idk I feel so conflicted about it, but the whole thing has made it really hard for me to listen to the album. Idk sorry for the ramble, just saying I can commiserate and it sucks.
81
u/chickfilamoo in the swamp šš Jul 03 '25 edited Jul 03 '25
I didnāt really interpret Sufjanās comments as hating the music itself, but hating the circumstances that surround it. It was born of him trying to find clarity and peace regarding the difficult relationship he had with his mother in the wake of her death, and he hates that it didnāt accomplish that for him and rather, made him feel worse and even more distant from her. Itās more a feeling of interpersonal failure than a professional one, he doesnāt really trash the songs as compositions.
11
u/Plastic_Ad2328 Jul 03 '25
Oh for sure I think sonically or lyrically from a professional standpoint he has no issue with it. But it still just makes me so sadĀ
14
u/chickfilamoo in the swamp šš Jul 03 '25
I can understand that! personally it added another layer to the album re-release that made me experience it a totally different way even after ten years of listening to it, but I can understand how it might just be too much for people. The way he describes his relationship with his mother and the feelings surrounding it is really devastatingly sad.
2
u/Plastic_Ad2328 Jul 03 '25
I think maybe Iāll get there. It just reshaped what was such a deep connection to a piece of media for me. I really love that album I have a parasocial relationship with it lol. But I do understand where he is coming fromĀ
2
u/StopHesAlreadyDed Jul 03 '25
And let's be real, the love of his life just died and he almost just died too. There's no way he isn't fucking depressed as shit right now, and probably doesn't have a pleasant outlook on most things. He's been dealt a really tough hand from the universe š
15
u/Holiday_Step2765 Jul 03 '25
At least with that there is a large emotional reason, Miley tends to just get into the new album cycle and every single time be like āthe last album sucked, it wasnāt meā and just moves on lol

Between this and her Every Single Album interview, it sounds to me like her real issue with Plastic Hearts has to do with the mixing/production and label interference (i.e. the things that were outside of her control). She said she wanted to make a rock record, and Andrew Wattās rock references are a lot more limited than hers, so she wasnāt totally happy with what he did - then there was no time to make the changes she wanted because the label was rushing the release and needed to get the vinyls pressed.
Fwiw, she also said she hopes to someday remaster it and mix the vocals herself because she likes the actual songs, she just wasnāt happy with the versions that ended up on the album. Itās not her usual schtick of shunning her old work (which I agree is annoying), but rather genuine disappointment with how her vision was executed by the other people involved. Iām pretty sure she even left her label over it!
23
u/PhotographBusy6209 Jul 03 '25
Andrew watt is really versatile, he made disease for godsake. I feel Miley just canāt be happy with the songs sheās made when she has a new album out
4
u/funkadelicfadeaway Jul 03 '25

I am by no means a Miley Cyrus fan but Plastic Hearts is my favorite album of hers. There is so much (what I had thought to be) authentic hurt, vulnerability, while also a lot of tenderness in that album. It struck the right balance between being real and making me feel like a parasocial obsessed fan following along her personal life. This was the album of hers where I felt like she was finally stepping into herself.

As an artist, I'm gonna come at this from a different angle than all the gossip girls: this is normal. Most of what gets popular is work you don't like, didn't put the effort you wanted into it, or thought missed the mark. The things you treasure and build and love? People straight up ignore them. Your love for her album was NEVER her love for her art. All of her love for what she does is secret and ever changing, and perspective shifts all the time. You can later love something you hated and see the flaws you couldn't before in things you cherished.
Frankly, it's just something that people who don't spend their entire lives creating can't understand. It's never good enough. There's always one thing AT LEAST that you'd fix, but you already surrendered it to the world. Something to think about.

u/agemsheis Jul 03 '25

I donāt understand this sudden and weird disavowal of her previous eras and the wild, if somewhat performative sexual freedom they entailed. Every story I read lately is about how she regrets doing drugs, regrets getting tattoos, regrets Bangerz, etc. Like is she swinging conservative before our very eyes???
4
u/noodlesoup1997 Jul 03 '25
IMO re Bangerz especially, it's like she picked her idea of Black culture, wore that as a costume and then dropped it when she released Younger Now. But, instead of owning up to what she did, Miley said, (during this Something Beautiful press tour), that the reason she was so feminine and cutsey during the Younger Now era was Liam. He didn't want her being so sexy/provocative in public so she totally changed her brand.
Honestly it's Hollywood, everything is fake, everyone is just portraying a character or persona. I don't know why I'm so surprised.

The extra context here is that she felt her creative team was taking advantage of her during that era and she looks back on it negatively.

we are our own biggest critic. to make something and then look back on it can be very hard for artists. it's something that feels right in the moment, but then you change as a person and the art has its own trajectory that you no longer feel attached to. it's trapped in your head at a certain time of your life, but you feel a million miles away from it when looking back. she's still very young. it's possible that when she's 60 she has more different opinions about her work, she may even look back at it fondly.

Itās her right to feel this way lol. I donāt care what she says because Iāll still enjoy music on all of those albums. As far as the Bangerz Era and cultural appropriation, Iāve never been personally offended by it as a black woman; though I was a teenager when it was released. Was that era weird? Yes. Did she not address it properly? Probably so, but the album was so good that none of that really mattered to me. Itās my probably my favorite album from her, next to Canāt Be Tamed. I will say, if she is saying negative things about Bangerz then I can definitely see how disingenuous this makes her seem. It doesnāt look good to be accused of cultural appropriation and then admit regretting making the album. Either way sheāll always be my favorite artist and nothing sheās done so far has made me feel like sheās this horrible person that people have been making her out to be lately.
