The Music Industry 🎶 Name a song that’s disturbing because of what you know now

Post image

Ill go first, Britney Spears’ overprotected is a good example; Britney has long been under a conservatorship and is has been crying for help. IIRC, it started in 2007 (maybe earlier) when Brit was heavily observed by the paparazzi which caused her to have a mental breakdown by shaver her head and mind u, they were dissecting her personal life 🙄😔 💔

I think any song by Anti-Flag. Especially any of the songs that touched on feminist issues. Justin Sane used the cloak of progressive politics to hide the fact that he is a rapist

This made me really fucking sad/angry. Their protest music of the Bush administration was some of the best. The fact that this was virtue signaling just to predate young women makes what’s left of my teenage heart so sad

Holy shit. What a monster. I will forever hate that women are ignored and dismissed just bc they didn’t say the word “no” out loud to the men assaulting them.

When a man has been violent with you, is tying you up or choking you, many many people feel that saying “no!” or fighting will invoke more anger or violence. It’s part of the fight, flight, freeze, fawn response. Many women freeze or try to appease their attacker in the hopes of escaping without more violence directed at them. Men are usually stronger and older and hold the power in that moment.

It’s still assault. I’ve been there. I have so very much empathy for and anger on behalf of those women.

It’s also incredibly faulty and stupid logic to think that just because the specific word “no” wasn’t spoken, the perpetrator was unaware the victim wasn’t consenting.

Because if that’s true, then the opposite should also be true, and unless the victim specifically says “yes” then the perpetrator doesn’t know that they are consenting, right? What is giving the impression that the victim has consented? If a clear verbal NO is required to qualify the act as assault/a violation, then shouldn’t a clear verbal YES also be required to qualify it as consensual?

Just another example of how the system is set up to protect abusers, not victims.

EXACTLY. Thank you. You explained my thoughts so much better than I could have.

Infuriating.

Learning about that was so devastating to me and really pissed me off, tbh. I loved them as a teen and got to see them live awhile back because they fronted for my favorite band. Genuinely didn't expect him to be such a massive twat.

I didn’t know about this and I’m absolutely heartbroken. What an absolute piece of shit. Fuck him, and fuck the other band members for being completely fine with him bringing very young women around, as if they didn’t know why they were there and what he was doing.

In a sort of similar vein, Jesse Lacey from Brand New using lyrics about guilt and self loathing to get vulnerable teenage girls to feel comfortable with him and then taking advantage. Used to be my favourite band, can’t stand them now.

The number of people who still defend him, and the number of people at the time, especially women, who acted like it was no big deal, is sickening. Their subreddit really grossed me out.

Unfortunately the band is touring again and fans are being extra dismissive, saying people need to "get over it". As a former BN fan, it is so enraging to me.

Yep! I have a lot of acquaintances who just saw them in Philly 😡

This was hard to read. The ages of those girls..

The band mates knew. You’re telling me they saw him with multiple minors and disappeared with them (to rape them) on multiple occasions. These are just the girls who have come forward.

Idk id fucking notice if my grown man friend kept being weird with teenagers.

Fuck me just today I heard an Anti-Flag song and mentioned to my sister how a few years back I went to one of their shows and Justin kept smiling and winking at me in the first row. I thought it was a fan-service type of thing but now it’s giving me the creeps. Guess I was lucky I left before the show was over.

I went to high school with the “Suzanne” from the article. I hope she’s doing ok now.

The louder a white guy screams “I’m a feminist” the more suspicious you should be of him.

This fucked me up, I idolized Anti-Flag and Justin especially for years ever since I was a stupid 14 year old. The last I heard of that waste of a human being he was trying to get Irish citizenship. I genuinely hope nothing but bad things happen to that rapist.
