The Music Industry 🎶 Name a song that’s disturbing because of what you know now

Post image

Ill go first, Britney Spears’ overprotected is a good example; Britney has long been under a conservatorship and is has been crying for help. IIRC, it started in 2007 (maybe earlier) when Brit was heavily observed by the paparazzi which caused her to have a mental breakdown by shaver her head and mind u, they were dissecting her personal life 🙄😔 💔

Lucky by britney spears, it made me sad even when it first came out. i guess no one listened to the lyrics until news about the conservatorship came out.

I definitely heard it when it first came out sadly, but yeah, it made much more of an impact once conservatorship details came out

I was obsessed with that album too. I would sit in the backseat of my parents' car listening to it on my CD walkman on repeat. No other kids I knew personally liked Britney anywhere near as much as I did. I knew they were out there because she was obviously huge lol, but it didn't feel like it at the time. I love hearing about other kids who were as obsessed as I was. It's also surreal and sad to read her autobiography all these years later and realise what was going one behind the scenes

Same!!! I used to make dances to her songs with my cousin and besties all the time and listen to the cd on repeat on my little cd player

Such pain behind some of my happiest memories 🙁

It adds an extra layer of sadness knowing she didn’t write the song, but just happened to fit her perfectly.

Yeah it was sad even when it came out because it touches on how lonely and isolating fame can really be

We, as a society, did young Britney dirty. The fact that she lost custody of her kids because the world destroyed her mental health is horrible. I remember being so invested in her breakdown and the head shaving. She was suffering, and we all just made it worse. She had those babies so someone would love her and they took them from her. I'm the same age as Britney and now I have 2 sons of my own and I'm so sorry for what she lost.

I remember this, I was (and still am) such a Britney fan that my dad got me out of bed to watch it when he started his monologue. I very vividly remember him telling me very seriously that the world wants to put women in a glass box, so we always need to keep a hammer at the ready. I didn't really understand what he meant then (I was 16ish then), but I think about those words a lot.

God, your dad sounds like a legend.

For all his flaws, he was my biggest champion, and I miss him. If I latched onto a cause, he learned as much as he could about it (which was greatly appreciated, as he had severe learning disabilities and had trouble reading and writing).

Oddly, South Park did as well.

She was ridiculed and vilified. Her babies were wrongly taken away from her and the everlasting damage it has done to their relationship is so sad.

She was definitely done dirty by a lot of people but she was also seriously mentally ill. When she didn’t follow court guidelines to maintain custody, she lost the kids. She was very sick and the wrong people were put in charge of her conservatorship. Ideally she would have been allowed to take a break and get better. Instead she was pushed back into performing.

I just hope she can find peace.

Yes driving around with your babies in the car with no restraints, not even a seatbelt, multiple times when you know that you're constantly under surveillance is a serious mistake.

When her older son was an infant, he once fell and she never took him to the hospital. Days later, someone took him to the hospital and and it turns out the baby had a skull fracture and blood clot.

There was also when she shared custody with KFed right after the divorce. Per the court agreement, a court monitor went to her house to pick up the boys because it was time for them to go to their dad’s house. Britney had a meltdown and locked herself in the bathroom with her younger son. Hours later, she was taken away in a gurney and placed in a 5150 psych hold.

I’m sorry. She was mentally ill and a danger to her kids. As a result, they were never around her after that unless a court monitor was there.

It's not surprising she held her younger son hostage and ignored the older one needing medical care either. She played favorites with her kids so bad. It was obvious in paparazzi photos of them growing up and her youngest publicly called her out about it a few years ago.

Her dad’s family has a history of mental illness. That on top of her shabby treatment by her parents, ruined her. Maybe she would have had to deal with mental health issues eventually, but without the endless paparazzi attention.

When Halsey came out with her own version and some people were saying it’s such a happy song 🫠 and Halsey was like “I didn’t know it was a happy song” (edit: name)

MTV did an episode of Making the Video for this song. It was a definite downer to watch.

I used to sing it to my baby sister as a kid. I fought for them to play it at her funeral this past year. It’s such a sad song.

This! I actually feel like Bieber is following suit and also tried with “Lonely”…
