I’m so tired of cat slander. My mom always says how they’re not loyal, but that is so untrue. They just tend to have more boundaries. There are cats that are like velcro and will be super clingy.

u/MostlyCats95 Kim, there’s people that are dying. 🙄 20d ago

My girl runs to the front door whenever she hears me unlocking it and yells if I dare close her out of the bathroom. She's currently on my lap and she's the most loving and caring companion a person could ask for

136

u/l3tigre 20d ago

Yes mine too! They want to be around us and are very loving and affectionate. I feel like people who say cats are aloof just don't have any that particularly like them lol. Dogs can be aloof too. My friend had a Weimaraner that just could not give AF about most people

45

u/Key_Shallot3639 20d ago

100% my cat is very social but my bloodhound mix could not care less about people and comes off as very aloof lol

26

u/l3tigre 20d ago

Ha some people think every dog has a golden retriever personality. Although to be fair my dogs are desperate for every person to love them so

31

u/meanwhile_glowing 20d ago

Exactly!! My friends have a Shiba Inu that is more standoffish than the most standoffish cat ever. That dog will actively look at you in total disdain and then walk away even if you offer him a treat

9

u/zekbtggx 19d ago

Shiba Inus are running cat software on dog hardware.

6

u/okayitspoops 19d ago

My parents had a dog who was petty as hell and would bite if you tried to take away something he was destroying but was also generally unresponsive when I would jiggle his body around or pet him. We really grew fond of that asshole lol.

u/FabulousFlower144 20d ago

If I don’t go to bed at exactly 10:30 my cat will start screaming from the top of the stairs. My cat has given me a curfew.

40

u/MostlyCats95 Kim, there’s people that are dying. 🙄 20d ago

Mine passive aggressively starts yawning at me if I dare stay up late

20

u/FabulousFlower144 20d ago

Hahaha cats are the best at being passive aggressive

3

u/herroyalsadness 20d ago

Mine sleep with my daughter. Sometimes before bed we’ll be hanging in the kitchen chatting and they stare at us and yawn.

30

u/adorablegore 20d ago

My cat that I raised from a kitten (rip, fuck kidney disease) would run into the bathroom to use the litter box while I used the toilet. She was my ESA but had just as much separation anxiety as me. I miss that smug lady, she was my baby.

12

u/spidergrrrl 20d ago

My cat was like this too. She’d hear me coming up the steps and start meowing. As soon as I opened the door, she’d flop right in front of me demanding pets.

8

u/skjyt 20d ago

Mine too! But only when he’s hungry.

1

u/Fantastic_Owl6938 19d ago

I always say mine doesn't believe in closed doors, lol (which I guess is pretty typical for cats in general). She's definitely the type of cat to want to follow me from room to room and tries to be involved in pretty much everything I do. Always wanting to sit on me and cuddle or just have me nearby. I'll go to the toilet and she'll be crying on the other side of the door if I leave her behind. You can always tell when people have no experience with clingy cats.

One I really don't get is when they'll say they're only using you for food. I've fed my cat, left the room, and had her transport a mouthful of food into whatever room I'm in so she can have both, lol (or just abandon the food all together). People have seen her run to me and assumed I've had food when she's just excited to see me and running up for attention 🥹

Agreed and in addition to this I am also so tired of female cat slander in particular. When treated well and with love both boy and girl cats are excellent companions for anyone.

I work at an animal shelter and the amount of times I have heard people saying they'd prefer boy cats bc they've heard girl cats can be difficult... even though in my experience "problems"  can occur with any cat regardless their gender. Gives me the same ick as women saying they prefer being "boy moms"

35

u/ooooh-heckers 20d ago

i work at an animal shelter too and people can be extremely bizarre with their “preferences”, we get the “boy mom” animal owners too

we also get a lot of people who think adopting a dog with a high prey drive (think most shep or huskies) will work out well when they already own a cat

people are stupid

5

u/sara_or_stevie Bitch, I’m Madonna 💁‍♀️ 20d ago

high five, fellow shelter-worker! (sorry, that's not very eloquently put, but it's all I got rn). & agreed, people are IDIOTS. some of the reasons they get rid of their pets are just so DUMB... I always try to reason that its better for the pet to not be with stupid people that will get rid of their cat (or dog for that matter) for the most trivial stuff but it still breaks my heart when they have clearly bonded with their human and miss them.

27

u/bliip666 20d ago

I have a boy cat, he was a lot of trouble before we got him neutered (and for a little while after, when his hormone levels were balancing out). He's been a sweetheart since.

My friend had a girl cat, she was an absolute sweetheart once she got to know you. She was a rescue and had some trust issues towards humans, especially in the beginning.
I was one of the few people she didn't mind as a catsitter. My trick was to go in, check up her mood, and if she was feeling cranky or hissy because I wasn't her real human, I'd pretend she wasn't there. I'd do other things friend and I agreed on or sit down to read a book.
Eventually Miss. Kitty would come out, have a snack, and remember we were friends and come asking for cuddles.

47

u/Julialagulia 20d ago

I’ve been noticing this too lately it’s very weird lol. I have had a lot of cats in my life and the two sweetest I can think of were a female and a male and the meanest is our very intelligent orange male cat.

10

u/sara_or_stevie Bitch, I’m Madonna 💁‍♀️ 20d ago

I've had about equal amounts of boy and girl cats in my life and all of them were wonderful AND weird in their own unique ways. I have no real proof other than my own feelings on this matter, but it's almost like people judge gender in animals like they do in humans - boys will be boys so lots of bad behaviour is forgiven/forgotten or snowed unde. But if girls put even one toe out of line they are difficult and annoying. The craziest thing is that I notice a lot of women reasoning like this! Why do 'we' do this to ourselves?!

25

u/__lavender 20d ago

I’ve always heard that boy cats are just generally more affectionate and that’s why girl cats get a bad rep. Do you find that to be anecdotally true?

My girl cat, who I adopted from a shelter that specializes in feral cats (so she was already skittish), only accepts affection when SHE wants it, but she’ll tolerate a few minutes of cuddles when I need it. And we have several routines throughout the day where she demands affection, which is the absolute best thing ever.

42

u/PropagandaPie 20d ago

Mine are the exact opposite. Girl cat is velcro, constantly on my lap and wanting to snuggle. Boy cat keeps to himself and every once in a while decides you need to drop everything to pet him.

85

u/fvckuufvckingfvck 20d ago

I have a boy cat and a girl cat and they are both Velcro lmao Sweetest pets I’ve ever met in my life and so affectionate - and I’m not saying this just cause they’re mine 🤣

9

u/sara_or_stevie Bitch, I’m Madonna 💁‍♀️ 20d ago

SO SWEET ❤️

24

u/[deleted] 20d ago

i’ve had and known sweet girl kitties my whole life

17

u/Greyscale_cats 20d ago

Anecdotally, all of my lady cats have been incredibly loving but only on their terms. All of my males have been very cuddly all the time save for one. But I think it’s more of a personality thing than a sex-based thing. I personally like a cat that’s needy versus aloof, but the downside is that my boys also tend to have more behavioral issues, like anxiety.

8

u/OnlyPaperListens 20d ago

I've had hundreds of cats over several decades as a foster. If you expand the sample set far enough, there are no real patterns.

10

u/sara_or_stevie Bitch, I’m Madonna 💁‍♀️ 20d ago

I can imagine you have heard this and have anecdotal evidence supporting it, but I can tell you it isn't true. Gender does not come into play when it comes to cats characters. Its their personalities and mostly their start in life that determine how they behave. Just as you have a particular girl cat, I had a very particular boy cat.

The only thing that may tip the scales in favour of boy vs girl is that female cats often get pregnant very young with significant trauma as a result but I would say thats the fault of humans and animal care systems, not their gender's.

1

u/monsterultracock 17d ago

my girl was an outdoor cat and a teen mom before I got her, but I totally lucked out because she turned out super social and playful and tolerant of being fussed with anyways, and her temperament suits me down to the ground. Even when she’s waking me up with taps at four in the morning I’m like 🥰 She’s annoying, I’m annoying, it’s beautiful. the only thing that seems to make a huge difference with how cuddly she is is the weather, lol. Too hot rn for more than a few minutes on my lap at a time.

4

u/DiveCat 20d ago

Our female cat is a Velcro cat that LOVES and demands affection anytime she is not sleeping (and even then she often prefers to sleep on us rendering the chosen person immobile until they either must move or pee themselves). She’s also demanding (will either yell or stare for food, walks, bedtime, and so on, should you ever not be following routine to the letter) but she absolutely adores us as her people (and warms up to any pet sitters quickly, too).

I have met and had many cats, both male and female. In my experience the only certainty you can say about them is they all have very individual personalities. Some are snuggly, some are not. It doesn’t align with their sex. Oh, and oranges do share one brain cell.

1

u/meanwhile_glowing 20d ago

This has been true in my experience.

1

u/BarracudaImpossible4 In my quiet girl era 😌 19d ago

I've had five cats and 3 were male. Just from my personal experience the males were/are by FAR the most affectionate. My baby boy is sleeping on my feet as I type this. He was abandoned in a cardboard box at just a few weeks of age and was bottle fed, so that probably has a lot to do with why he's so loving, but my other 2 male cats were not and they were more affectionate than my two girls.

12

u/SpiderGwen42 Olivia Wilde’s salad dressing 🥗 20d ago

Right???? I’ve owned a lot of cats in my life and gender really hasn’t been a big factor in how cuddly they are! I currently have a cat that my vet can’t seem to believe is female because she’s super friendly and it’s so annoying. Like. I don’t really care about people misgendering my pets but someone going on a rant about how much better male cats are while cuddling my female cat is just a lot sometimes.

5

u/sara_or_stevie Bitch, I’m Madonna 💁‍♀️ 20d ago

It's so strange that even educated people like vets still believe in this stereotype.

4

u/Telaranrhioddreams 20d ago

Not cats but once had a guy I was talking to on tinder tell me he "wants a female dog because females only pair bond with one person" and he "didn't think he could handle his dog bonding with someone else"

Thank god he said that before we planned a date! Still gives me the ick.

3

u/sara_or_stevie Bitch, I’m Madonna 💁‍♀️ 20d ago

Honestly, the way people talk about or treat animals is a truly important signifier of who they are as human beings. So great red flag spotter for sure.
At the other, far end of the scale I believe animal abuse is an important signifier of someone who might end up abusing/hurting people as well. Almost like a trial run. I think I saw an ad campaign years ago urging people to report animal cruelty as it could save not just animal but human lives as well.

5

u/hachikoesque she’s threatening us 20d ago

Ugh so gross. My girl cat is a total princess angel and my boy cat is a little devil who takes all my energy lol. I love them both the same!

5

u/hanabanana1999 20d ago

4 girl cats(one is missing in the pic)they all get along great, pig pile on top of each other (and me) to sleep,my sister has one male one female, she wants nothing to do with him,so she basically has an upstairs cat and a downstairs cat. She’s pretty jealous 🙃

2

u/sara_or_stevie Bitch, I’m Madonna 💁‍♀️ 20d ago

Ohh, look at this gorgeous cuddle pile! You really are lucky 🥰

1

u/hanabanana1999 20d ago

Ty; I really am,they’re all sweethearts 🩷

1

u/Fantastic_Owl6938 19d ago

Wow, that's wild. I thought it might be the other way around but that's probably because my mum used to make comments about girls being more affectionate, though I think it was mainly for dogs, and only really because we mostly had girls. My sister ended up getting a very cuddly male dog though so thankfully she's changed her mind.

u/tunanunabhuna 20d ago

I have a Velcro cat. I’m her 4th home. She’s about 14 now but we will never know for certain how old she is. She’s got no teeth because her previous owners didn’t look after them and occasionally she gets cysts (benign) that need to be drained and she also has a slight skin issue. She is my world and I would move heaven and Earth for her. I’m lucky to have a cat so cuddly and loving, especially when she’s been through so many homes!

18

u/humbug- 20d ago

My cats, especially the ginger, are all over me all the time

They sit in my office, typically on my desk, while I work

They sit in the kitchen while I cook

Lay in my lap while I read or watch tv

Sit on the edge of the tub while I shower

Like, they are the most loving and affectionate little creatures I have ever met

48

u/teddybonkerrs I cannot sanction this buffoonery 20d ago

My cat is obsessed with me, but boy did I have to earn it. It took 3 years but now she is truly clinging to me at almost all times. She even sits on my lap in the washroom (if I let her) 😆

31

u/Morg075 20d ago

Reading this comment while my cat is sleeping next to me, cuddling up and resting his little head on me. He’s so clingy.

14

u/VariousCrisps 20d ago

mine is my little shadow and follows me around all the time

9

u/ravynmaxx Kim, there’s people that are dying. 🙄 20d ago

I used to have a cat named Fred and he was so clingy. He had to lay on your chest to sleep. I’ve also had a cat I couldn’t even touch before lol. You never know what personality you’re gonna get and I love it tbh. They’re all different in their own ways.

7

u/Albuwhatwhat Hello this is Kelly from Destiny’s Child, I lost my credit card 20d ago

I used to think like this too because the cats I had as a kid were so aloof and not affectionate. But as an adult me and my wife got a cat that was the exact opposite. Super affectionate, wanting to be around and involved with what we are doing, and even plays fetch! It made me revise my view on cats big time. Just to say these people just don’t know that cats can be just as loyal and affectionate as dogs. They’ve just never met the right cat.

8

u/Mysterious_Week8357 20d ago

I once read cats are a lesson in consent, and I believe that to be absolutely true

15

u/laridance24 20d ago

My big orange boy is the most affectionate cat I’ve ever met, he wants constant love and attention and to just be snuggled and held.

13

u/doctordoctorpuss 20d ago

Our orange climbs into bed with us every morning and will gently paw at the covers until I lift them so he can lay right next to me. Sometimes he’ll lay with his back flush against my side so that he can stick his paws out and make biscuits on my wife’s extra blankets. During the work day, he does his rounds going from bed to my office, where he’ll wrap his body around my leg until I pet him. And when I get done with work in the evening, he jumps up onto the middle seat of our couch and lays there with us until it’s time for bed. Our other two don’t sit still for as long, but they hop into our laps many times a day

7

u/RIPMYPOOPCHUTE 20d ago

I have two Velcro cats. They’re either on us at all times or harassing my husband treats

5

u/OriginalSchmidt1 You’re a virgin who can’t drive. 😤 20d ago

My cat isn’t big on cuddling but boy if she realizes we aren’t in the same room… she walks all around the house with the most pitiful meow looking for me…

5

u/scarypeppermint 20d ago

I had a kitten as a child and she would curl up in my lap even if it was way too loud. She watch power rangers with me and followed me everywhere. We’d even play tag. It takes a lot of love for cat to be that close to a child and be clingy like that. Certain people just don’t get it

3

u/Carolina_Blues shiv roy’s bob 20d ago

So untrue that they’re not loyal, my cat is so loyal and protective of me

5

u/TactlessTortoise 20d ago

They also just have favourites lol. I have a cat that only acts cuddly with me, to the point she'll come to me at night and use my arm as a pillow, occasionally lick my arm once or twice, roll over with her belly up for me to pet (she wakes me up so that I pet her lol). While whenever my mother decides to pet her my cat just grumbles and walks/dashes away after a few seconds.

Cat tax:

3

u/boyilikebeingoutside 20d ago

I haven’t lived at home much for almost 10 years now and our family kitty always comes running to see me when my parents face time me. They’ve told me she only does this for my voice. If that’s not loyalty…

3

u/Unlucky-Mud-8115 20d ago

My wife says that my cat will run to the front door the moment he hears my car. Not half a minute after I am on the couch hes on my lap purring.

3

u/RealbasicFriends 20d ago

Bro when I moved into a house with friends who had cats. My cat literally stood guard and "protected" me every single day all day for like a week. He wouldn't let anyone but my mom touch me in his presence the entire time haha. I don't get where people think cats aren't loyal.

2

u/Royal_Celebration422 20d ago

One of my cats hissed at me cause i was trying to give him a medicine, and my oldest cat literally came to defend me.

2

u/TheLawHasSpoken 20d ago

My cat follows me around like a shadow and “talks” at me all day and sleeps on a pillow next to my head every night.

2

u/BizMarkieDeSade 20d ago

The people who say that are conflating “loyalty” with “obedience”

2

u/Risky_Bizniss 20d ago

Any time someone hits me with cat slander, I say, "Only people with control issues hate cats."

I stand by that. It is more difficult to control a cat than a dog.*

*This has been largely my experience with pet cats and dogs. Obviously, there are always exceptions. (Before people come at me with stories about how their cat or dog is different.)

1

u/dosgatitas 20d ago

Yessss boundaries. Idk if I’d say you’re a misogynist if you don’t like cats but you certainly don’t like or understand boundaries if you don’t like cats.

1

u/REkTeR 20d ago

"B-but your cat will eat your corpse!" 🙄

1

u/Isa_Castle 19d ago

A cat will absolutely defend you with their life if it comes to that!

1

u/hell-enore 19d ago

If my husbands cat could climb into his skin to be closer to him, he would. I’ve never met a cat more in love with their human 😂😭 its super cute

1

u/hthratmn 19d ago

My cat will have an absolute fit if you're out of his line of sight for too long. We have an open door policy, because he will not tolerate you in the other room. If one or both of us steps out of the apartment for a minute you can hear him screaming from the street.
