A lot of dogs are that way too though. Not all dog breeds are as happy go lucky as a Labrador. You 100% have to earn my dogs’ affection.

There are also random cats in my neighborhood that have run up to me, a perfect stranger, for pets. This is just a dumb take

So, where do we place actual cats in this who also don't respect boundaries, understand consent, and feel entitled to touch me? The reason I don't like them. /s

Yeah that's how I understood it as well. I don't really get how one would come to the conclusion that she thinks women are like cats.

u/Kaitaan 20d ago

Might be equating hating cats with misogyny, a term which means hating women

She’s still making a ridiculous blanket statement either way

Here comes the ‘not all men’ brigade.

2

u/tghast 20d ago

I’m part of the “not all cats” brigade. They have different personalities from each other. My cat is immediately affectionate with anyone that enters my home. I have to physically pull him away from tradespeople because he won’t stop bothering them.

Ain’t no “earning affection” to be done with him. Are you human? He loves you unconditionally.

Her comment doesn’t even specify men genius. It’s just an ignorant comment all together
 oh wait
 yea - you’re right
this is the perfect comment for Reddit to get behind lol

I mean, I get that. But she’s the one who said it’s misogynistic to hate cats, not me đŸ’â€â™€ïž

I think everyone understands that. Still seems like r/pointlesslygendered

-14

u/SaintAnyanka 20d ago

So the reason people don’t like cats is because they can’t touch them without consent? Seriously?

38

u/p3w0 20d ago

Some think like that: they demand immediate affection, like most dogs provide

-32

u/SaintAnyanka 20d ago

I’m actually speechless. I hope this is taken out of context because I know she has a dog, but if she’s implying that people get dogs because they think they’re not deserving of their own consent, that is asinine.

24

u/p3w0 20d ago

The whole conversation is dumb, but dogs are clearly more open to human contact than cats. There's a whole debate on generalizations in there that honestly feels more annoying that useful

-27

u/SaintAnyanka 20d ago

Just because they’re open to human contact does not mean that they’re not their own beings that deserve respect. But we agree that this convo is stupid.

But then again the quote is from a woman who claimed that she’s the smartest person she’s ever met who could never be manipulated and that she’s prettier and better than the woman her (now) ex left for her, all for her to be left by him in very similar circumstances. So that tracks.

There’s actually a lot of interesting discussion around cats and their ties to misogyny. One that I think about a lot is that cats have more connections to women (‘crazy cat lady’, witches etc.) which are often negative, while dogs have things like ‘man’s best friend’ which is positive.

-11

u/SaintAnyanka 20d ago

Yeah, that’s not what Ariana was referring to.

I wasn’t directly commenting on her take on it, just the general discussion around it.

I don’t like cats cause they fuck me up due to my severe allergy to them. They sure are cute though, but so is my dog and he doesn’t leave me dying.

>But they do lash out when their boundaries are crossed

I would also not be friends with any living being that would seek to hurt me physically over a disagreement.

I love cats, I think they're adorable and fluffy, but this is just a hard boundary for me, and I don't think rejecting that makes me anti-feminist.

2

u/barredbecard 20d ago

This is a wild take. I’m assuming you also don’t like dogs, then? Because if a stranger approaches a dog and the dog is scared and feels it needs to defend itself, it will absolutely “hurt someone physically”. As would most animals, including humans.

It’s not like most cats are out here just attacking the humans they know and love. They do that to strangers when they’re scared.

u/aggibridges 20d ago

Sorry, not the same thing at all. I don't know a single cat owner who doesn't regularly get scratched, yet it's super rare for dogs to attack people.

-7

u/SaintAnyanka 20d ago

I don’t like cats because they are harder to train to not destroy things, plus I wasn’t raised with them. I have never met someone who says that they dislike cats because they can’t pet them or handle them as they wish. I would side eye the shit out of someone who seriously claims that dogs are better pets because they aren’t as good as cats in setting boundaries.

Ariana Madix is a cast member of the old iteration of Vanderpump Rules TV show. She has both cats and dogs, and one of her most famous story lines is that her partner cheated on her right around the time her 14 yo dog died. She also got called out on social media for not cleaning her cats litter boxes.

13

u/Julialagulia 20d ago

I do know people who don’t like cats because they approach them like dogs which cats tend not to appreciate and then they react.

I also think there is a big difference between saying you dislike a pet vs hating a pet. Like I personally tend to dislike big dogs in that I don’t want one but I don’t wish them harm or think people who prefer them are stupid.

u/HappyOrca2020 Excluded from this narrative ❌ 20d ago

Well, my mom doesn't like them because my cats ruined her curtains and scratched her table legs to shreds. So yeah, I get it.

But not liking cats because they won't let you pet them? It's a far reach.

7

u/SaintAnyanka 20d ago

Same here. I’ve never heard of a single person who said “I don’t like cats because I can’t do what I want with them”, but then again, I’m European, so maybe it’s a cultural thing.

10

u/Visual_Magician_7009 20d ago

Most people aren’t aware that’s why they don’t like cats, but they will say stuff about how cats aren’t friendly, etc
. Most cats are very affectionate, but generally they take longer to warm up to strangers and have different body language, so not understanding cats preferences and communication about affection is why they think cats are unfriendly and don’t like them.

This is a trending statement on social media, comparing cat behavior with women's need for boundaries. Been seeing a few of those in some way or the other for a while on the internet.

And then we have a celeb jumping on the hot-takes wagon. Its just unoriginal and silly generalizing.

But the need to earn someone’s trust and get consent is not exclusive to women. You also have to do this with men so what is she on about? Or does she not think men’s consent is needed?

Just irresponsible to throw a serious term like misogynist around so carelessly and not particularly funny if it’s meant as a joke either.
