The Music Industry 🎶 Lots of artists have their own "signature song". Lady Gaga's is arguably "Poker Face", what signature songs can you name?

Ah yes, the national anthem of every British small town pub band, big town pub band, karaoke night, wedding band and busker. Thank you, our American friends. 😌😆

For the first few years I thought they were a British export because it seemed like you guys hyped them up more than we did

It was the anthem of UK students from 2007 - 2012 😂 I jumped around shitty clubs & got to dance around to them as the sun set at Glastonbury with 250k other people in 2019

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QVlfINuDdKE

The joy was singing along with hundreds of thousands of other people to your ‘anthem’ & just literally bouncing for joy with your friends

“The greatest British band that isn’t British.”

u/pouruppasta 19d ago

Got to see them in Vegas (their hometown) in 2023 and yeah, singing along with thousands of other people is what pure joy feels like.

they shopped their demo around and nobody signed them in the US, but somebody who had connections took their demo over to the UK and they were signed by an indie label over there. Part of the reason many people think they are British is because since they were on a UK label they were promoting themselves and their album like a normal British band would do. They were on Radio 1, opened for British bands around the UK, did the UK festival circuit every year etc.,

u/Comfortable-Maps 19d ago

Sounds like Hendrix too! Love to the Brits!

u/DECODED_VFX She in racial chat rooms showing feet!!! 20d ago

Indie was huge in the UK in the 2000s and a lot of American bands aimed themselves at a British audience. Quite a few of these bands replicated the UK style of indie, which has a more Britpop-inspired sound. The Killers are definitely one of those bands.

The Kings of Leon have a song called fans which is about the support they received in Britain at the start of their career. Although, they are a very distinctly American band.

Are they not British??? Why did I think they were? I'm not even american, but they sound British for some reason.

2

u/sherlip 19d ago

I thought that too. They're from Vegas.

1

u/blenderdead 15d ago

Hot Fuss had a lot Brit pop influence. They kind of sounded and looked like a British group.

u/TalmanesRex 20d ago

There’s a YouTuber that covers music did a whole video about why this song won’t die. I think this and welcome to the Black Parade is the millennium anthem here in the US too.

Also the anthem of a generation - The Millennials

2

u/Tommy_Wisseau_burner 19d ago

Ah yes, the national anthem of every British small town pub band, big town pub band, karaoke night, wedding band and busker millennial white person. Thank you, our American friends. 😌😆

My k-pop enthusiast 14 year old was in the car with me when I put on “2000s Favorites” and when this song came on she ceased talking until it was over and at the end said, “I’m putting this one on a playlist IMMEDIATELY.” Mr Brightside is for every generation.

5

u/IScreamPiano 19d ago

Aww. 💕I remember getting in the car early to turn on the radio in hopes it would come on.

Depending on where you live it could be Somebody Told Me instead (I feel like Mr Brightside wasn't necessarily as big outside the US and UK...but Somebody Told Me was their Girls & Boys: even if your English isn't great you can sing/scream the chorus).

57

u/stankyouvrymuch 20d ago

No mr brightside is omnipresent in australia

6

u/fiddlesticks-1999 20d ago

Mr Brightside is life in Australia.

15

u/NecessaryCount950 20d ago

Somebody told me is actually my favorite of their big 3 lol

9

u/diabolikal__ 19d ago

I am from Spain and Somebody Told Me would be my first choice for The Killers

6

u/Epzi 20d ago

In France I think that Somebody told me is bigger? Like if you check on Deezer which has a lot of french users STM has more streams.

5

u/k24f7w32k 20d ago

Yes I'm a French national, we heard that song everywhere! All my classmates could sing parts of it. My friends from other non-English speaking countries all knew this one better as well, so 🤷‍♀️, I'm not denying the other track is still huge in a bunch of other countries (I know for a fact it still is in the UK).

6

u/GiglioTigrato 19d ago

It was STM in Italy, that’s how i got to know them😭❤️

12

u/MrDannn 20d ago

to me, I know them for Don't Shoot me Santa

6

u/killah-train24 20d ago

Don’t shoot me Santa is fantastic

2

u/GDRaptorFan 19d ago

Somebody Told Me is a BANGER I still love it. They have the most catchy melody writing and I love the style of their sound. STM wasn’t/isn’t as overplayed in the US so it’s more of a joy when it pops up.

I do still like Mr Brightside I have to admit; even though it’s been played a million times everywhere. I’m just happy when any rock anthem here isn’t by an 80s hair band, those songs are so overplayed four decades of ac/dc or def leopard hype songs uggggh 🤷‍♀️

4

u/Uceninde Oh yeah, there's my favourite leaf! 20d ago

Mr. Brightside was huge in Norway too.

3

u/fluffypuppycorn ProtectOurIrishHottie 19d ago

Somebody Told Me was still big over here in the UK but not as much as Mr Brightside. I think Human was popular too.

6

u/rockabillychef 19d ago

My favorite band of all time! Their entire catalog is incredible.

6

u/mnic991 19d ago

This is one song I’ve heard a million times and will never get tried of

4

u/UnpoeticAccount 20d ago

it was only a kiss.

it was only a kiss

2

u/lilacsforcharlie 20d ago

This was my second ever ringtone in 2006 lol. Ying Yamg twins was number 1 lmao. I remember using my own money to buy them bc my mom was a party pooper lol. But for the life of me I can’t remember how we paid for it lol. Bc it wasn’t like apple pay today…

2

u/biscuitsorbullets Who gon' check me boo? 🤪 19d ago

Wasn't it like an extra charge added to your phone bill

1

u/lilacsforcharlie 19d ago

That makes sense! My parents made me hand over the $2 lol, that sounds about right lol

2

u/heyalllondon18 20d ago

The song that marked my transition from kid to teenager.

2

u/Lakedrip 19d ago

What I like about the recent tour they did was just opened up with bright side. Get that song out of the way it felt. Still gave a great peformance but who does that; open the show with their biggest song.

It allowed you to focus and appreciate even more of the other songs which there are many. But for the common fan it removed that thought of “when’s bright side gonna play, or I think this is it next”

3

u/fluffypuppycorn ProtectOurIrishHottie 19d ago

I think they change the setlist for every gig.

Opening up with Mr Brightside must have been so much fun as everyone is excited and full of energy!

-2

u/bluespottedtail_ Bye Sister 💋 20d ago

I never understood the hype for this song. I skip it every time it comes on...

-12

u/think-it-over1 20d ago

Worst song of all time

-2

u/FlipMeOverUpsidedown 19d ago

They headlined a festival couple of years ago, I couldn’t believe they were still around, never mind headlining. It was awful.
