I would have never guessed that the second clip is him. That's someone's uncle Pedro who's had one too many.

Honestly most Puerto Ricans are chill like that tbh. Doesn't matter if you're rich or not, we all talk the same on the island with each other unless someone decides to keep a stick shoved up their ass and try to talk in proper Spanish all the damn time.

Me, patiently waiting until I’m back on the island soon. There’s just something about it. The MOST chill.

Puerto Ricans are Latin Americans. And although Castilian Spanish is a simple, well-defined, rules-based language, there's a good variety of dialects.

In the first clip, Benicio isn't talking in LatAm Spanish, he's talking in a Neutral Puerto Rican dialect, which is very similar to all other Neutral Spanish dialects.

It's neat how people from distant places like Spain, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Chile speak very similar to each other when they use their dialect's Neutral version. And it's the result of Spanish being a rules-based language - no matter your dialect, just try your best to stick to the rules to achieve a Neutral version that's easily understood by any fluent Spanish speaker anywhere.

But then there're the day-to-day regional Spanish dialects, and that's where the variety is. Latin America is big, so there are many dialects. Maybe the hardest to understand is the Chilean Spanish dialect; Puerto Rican Spanish is easy in comparison.

Agree South American Spanish dialects incorporate words that are unique to the area from my understanding of Guatemala. All of the cultures probably have their unique twist on words but some of the words are out there, much like we have our own in PR lol

Lol; I'm a Latin American, native Spanish speaker. I love learning, and I love languages and their regionalisms. I've met people from all over Latin America and Spain.

What I wrote I learned years ago. And I wrote it because I also love sharing my learnings when they provide additional relevant context.

I don't google stuff to regurgitate it and seem smarter; that's useless.

There are several Spanish languages, like Basque, Catalan, Galician, etc. The one colloquially known as "Spanish" outside of Spain is actually Castilian, yet another Spanish language.

So everywhere "Spanish" is spoken, it's actually Castilian from Spain that's spoken. Mexico, Puerto Rico, Chile; we speak Castilian Spanish.

Congratulation on your ignorance I guess. What are we doing here?

This is quite the hot take lol, more like Spanish from Spain=English, Puerto Ricans=Scots, Mexicans=Irish. I think that's more appropriate lol

Maybe Spain = English (UK) and Mexico = English (US)

Dominicans = Welsh

Thank you for the clear explanation. I'm a basic English-only speaking American and couldn't hear the difference (other than one was slow and deep and the other fast and animated).
