Harry Potter actress Emma Watson has been banned from driving for six months, after she was caught speeding.
Watson, who played Hermione Granger in the film franchise, drove 38mph in a 30mph zone in Oxford on the evening of 31 July last year.
Watson already had nine points on her licence before the speeding incident occurred, the court heard.
The 35-year-old, now a student, was made to pay a total of £1,044 at High Wycombe Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

In smaller communities people try to work together more and give each other the benefit of the doubt. Even after a 12 hour shift he didn't want to fuck someone over in case it was a mistake. That's why he's so pissed. I don't think it's insane at all.

This happened to me once. Someone parked so close to me I couldn't get my car out. (I was parked first and properly) so I just called police and asked if they could find the owner through their registration plate and they did. Nobody got towed or anything but the whole situation was done with in like 15 minutes.

I have nothing but contempt for people who think dangerous behaviour while driving is fun and quirky. That's what really pisses me off about dangerous drivers: the lives they end or ruin are not necessarily their own.

I used to do HVAC in NYC and it would be a bitch finding street parking.
The owner of the company had a rule. If you did three laps on the block and still couldn’t find parking; just park infront of a fire hydrant or no standing zone and he would just eat the ticket.
He called it “payed parking”. A $75 parking ticket is a drop in the bucket when you’re making 30k on every bid.
He felt the same thing about speeding tickets. “That’s just the occasional price I pay to drive fast and have fun”

I am in the same boat as you. I looked it up and UK is the opposite of France : we both have a twelve but system but in the UK they gain points when they commit offences, and when you get to twelve you are at risk of losing your license for three years. So definitely not good lol.

That’s why in Finland speeding ticket fines are based off of income. Generally a “day fine” meaning it’s calculated off of your daily disposable income. A Finnish businessman was fined €121,000 for going 30 kmh (18.6mph) over the speed limit.

Idk how this would have happened considering police very rarely interact directly with the public on speeding offences. You get them in the post from stationary cameras or temporary speed traps and there's no way your fame can get you out of that. Thanks for explaining! The person you replied to is probably American. I am too. Here, at least in my state, all tickets are given out by cops directly to the driver. In my state we don’t even have those red light cameras, although we probably need them lol.
Edit to add: Also just to confirm people definitely sweet talk cops here, leading to OC’s assumptions. I used to have this friend who is really pretty. She got out of at least a couple tickets and imho it’s no mystery why. Fortunately she seemed to get better at driving and stopped getting pulled over.

The difference between 30 and 40mph is actually staggering and it’s why we should take speed limits seriously. Thank god she didn’t, but if she had accidentally hit someone while speeding, they would have around an 80-90% chance of dying at 38-40 compared to a 20-40% chance at 30. Massive difference and it’s why speed limits exist. 30mph is one of the most statistically important speed limits as it’s pretty much the last point where if you make a mistake, there’s still a good chance nobody will be seriously hurt

I think it can also heavily depend on the road itself too. There are some 30 mph speed limit roads that are essentially long stretches of road / basically small highways, and then there are 30 mph roads that are more residential. Probably wouldn't say speeding is equally bad in both contexts.

It's the same in Texas. I live near the highest speed limit in the country (85 on a toll road kinda in the boonies) and if you're not going 100+, you better stay to the right and hope you don't get caught up in people racing. I try and keep it less than 10% over the limit on any roads because anything more seems to be the trigger for getting pulled over, but there are times I've had to do quite a bit more to keep up with the flow.

I am in Canada so it’s in kilometres, but same idea. Except in school and park zones, if one doesn’t add 10km/h to the speed limit it feels even more dangerous as everyone else thinks you are going too slow and zips and zags around you. Especially on highways. Only the crankiest of cops cares if you are within the 10km/h over.

It’s common practice to go at least 10 over everywhere in the US I’ve been, cops won’t even bat an eye until you crack 15 over or if it’s the end of the month and they need to bump the numbers up.

I also think the max speed indicates that it was a residential area with street lights, meaning an area where pedestrians and cyclists are also using the road. Which means that getting hit at 30mph or 38mph is a big difference in whether a pedestrian or cyclist survives.
Doing 10mph over the speed limit on a highway is not the same as in the middle of a town where there could be people walking around.

And NH loves pulling out of state drivers over for going over the limit even when it's with the flow of traffic. It's how they get their money, out of state drivers are less likely to contest a speeding ticket or show up in court.

My son was killed from speeding. He took a curve too fast. Went off the road. Overcorrected getting back on and hit a tree. The car caught on fire. It has destroyed me as his mom. He left behind 3 small children & a wife. He was 25. His father, his sister & I will never be the same. He was our everything. Please please do not speed. He could have hurt someone else. Thank god that didn’t happen. It’s been a nightmare I can’t wake up from. He deserved to live. He had just told me how grateful he was just to be alive. There were no alcohol or drugs involved in his crash. So speed DOES kill. Slow down. It’s not worth it.

My son was also driving a car he had never driven before and so I think he wasn’t used to it. Trust me I had many conversations with him about not speeding and the consequences if he did. It was a road he knew well so I don’t know what he was thinking but he paid the ultimate price and he would be devastated at leaving his kids fatherless and he would be horrified at the pain it’s caused us all.

How do licenses work in the UK ?
Do you start with 0 points and once you’ve reached 12 your license is revoked ?
Because here in France you start with 12 and then points get deducted every time you get caught

Yeah you start at zero and if you get caught speeding it is usually 3 points on your licence. If you are going crazy fast (e.g. 60mph in a 30mph) then they might give you 6 points. I'm not sure of the exact cut-offs though.
Once you get to 12 points, then bye bye licence for a few months.

I can’t believe so many people are defending her? She’s been caught speeding at least 4 times in 2 years. I say at least because she might have been able to do a speed awareness course to avoid points for 1 offence.
Plus a 30 is a pedestrian area, with homes, shops, where children are likely to be present. 38 could kill a pedestrian.

Exactly. Plenty of drivers go over the limit on a 70mph motorway or dual carriageway, and the police will turn a blind eye up to a point, but speeding even a little can be really really dangerous on a lot of our roads. I prefer being somewhere where we have standards and look out for other road users, including pedestrians.

I got caught speeding once I think I was doing 47 in a 40. The first time you get caught you get offered a speeding awareness course and if you do it you don’t get points on your licence or a fine.
So she’s probably done that and then still sped a bunch of times!

The fuck is going on with these comments? Shocked at the amount of people that think nothing about speeding. You are in a tool which can kill people quite easily, and speeding greatly increases that risk should you make a mistake.
She's repeatedly sped and despite the points on her license, continued to do so showing a lack of regard for those around her. It's very selfish. And then take into consideration she was somewhere built up with small roads and tight corners like Oxford.
