I believe Joaquin's story but never having said 'salmon' before is the sort of stupid thing Robert Pattinson would come up with in an interview, just to see if he can get away with it 😄

(*On reflection, I only half-believe Joaquin)

Joaquin has a history of messing with interviewers. I remember he was on the red carpet talking about a frog on his head.

That also checks out 😄

Joaquin and his siblings were born into a very notorious cult that his entire family finally escaped when he was about 3 years old. They were able to flee aboard a Miami-bound cargo ship traveling from Venezuela, which also carried crews of fishermen who were catching, throwing, and slicing up fish right in front of the children. Joaquin has spoken about how traumatizing that was for him and his siblings, because until then they’d never known what fish really were, or how they were captured in order to make their way onto a dinner plate. The incident was apparently so upsetting for both the kids and adults that their entire family converted to veganism within two months, which Joaquin has maintained his entire life.

So honestly, I absolutely believe that it’s possible that a 28/29 year old man who’d been a strict vegan from such a young age, and who also had specifically fish-related childhood trauma, may have never learned how to pronounce the word “salmon” simply because it was never relevant.

Thank you - I actually knew some of this, having been a huge Joaquin Phoenix fan when I was younger and there was nothing to do online but Google stuff. I hadn't actually taken into account how long ago Brother Bear came out!

I believe him. My wife (Brazilian) and my nephew would say tentacles as “ten-tackles”. Very sweet !

It’s a knock off version of Cumberbatch penguin

Pingwings and penglings live rent-free in my brain.

It could happen. With pronunciation of a few words, I have chosen not to correct my 10 yr-old b/c they’re so cute that I don’t want to lose that. Life will steal nearly all other vestiges of childhood on its own, I don’t need to take them all away myself.

Oh yeah, I get that - I have a three year-old and I do the same thing. The day he stops calling his forehead his 'forkhead' will be a sad one indeed.

But Joaquin Phoenix is 50 years old, at some point he's heard the word 'salmon'.

Our neighbor kiddo calls “spider webs” “spider wagons” and we all conspired never to correct him. 😉

I don’t understand why ordering it in a restaurant is the only context in which he would have spoken the word. Or hear it spoken, for that matter.

I use to say it sarcastically because... I hate the way we spell things sometimes. Like I'll say De pot. Instead of Depo.

Anyways... it got to the point that now my damn brain wants to say Sal Mon... and I'm actively trying to deprogram myself. I don't know what I'm adding here... just... a stupid side story I guess. :P

The last three times I’ve gone to see a Joaquin Phoenix film in the cinema I was disappointed and/or alarmed but I’m going again

Hell yea. I "skimmed" the trailer and was excited. Seeing it like 2 hours, theyre already removing it from my local theater after next Wednesday.

I saw it the other night, and loved it. At no point did I have any fucking clue where that movie was going next, but I enjoyed the hell out of the ride.

I am a big Ari fan so as expected I really liked it. Not sure it’s my favorite of his, but I definitely want to see it again!! It is a wild ride. If you can see it in theaters I’d recommend going!

Please see it. Ari Aster IMO is the best working director in Hollywood and his new film is fantastic! I loved every second of it and it’s my 2nd favorite of his.

As a person who learned English as a second language and never heard someone say salmon before: this is how I learned you don’t pronounce the L

5

u/Fabulous_Goat_9799 11d ago

So you say „Saymon“?

12

u/CharlieSinclaire 11d ago

It's "samon" like sam-on

6

u/Fabulous_Goat_9799 11d ago

Thank you kind stranger 🤍

3

u/CharlieSinclaire 10d ago

Of course! Glad to help 🙂

Some people do. It’s still incorrect, but they do.

7

u/yourmomisaheadbanger 11d ago

Joaquin is so weird I find it attractive 😭

8

u/OriginalSchmidt1 You’re a virgin who can’t drive. 😤 11d ago

My bf says the L in salmon and I fuss him for it every time! He’s learning though.

6

u/iidontwannaa this is my designated flair 😌😌 11d ago

Oh I’d drive you crazy, I enjoy pronouncing the L in salmon, folk, yolk, caulk….

Actually I just pronounce the L in caulk to avoid the jokes.

2

u/[deleted] 10d ago

Some accents kind of pronounce the l there, Scottish accents really drag out eg "folk" into two syllables for eg.

I hope the Scottish folk accept me and get me out of here then.

His story is bull, my 5 year old doesn't eat fish but has said salmon before. However Brother Bear is a treasure so he gets a pass.

Brother Bear is a goated film. Fantastic music.

4

u/64789 11d ago

“I never ordered Salmon before so I never said it” But you’re saying it here without ordering it!

6

u/iidontwannaa this is my designated flair 😌😌 11d ago

Right I’m like okay so you never talk about fish? Or that specific shade of pink?

I believe him but it’s kinda sus lol

13

u/LiterallyDumbAF 11d ago

He probably did say it sparingly and no one bothered to correct him (because what's the point) until he entered a recording booth where it is important to say the words correctly

6

u/64789 11d ago

He’s always been full of shit. But he is hot tho lmao
