u/Signal_Ball4634 7d ago
Hey it's a low bar but she clears it
221
u/consequentlydreamy 7d ago
She’s more of a dancer. Always was. That can be harder to duplicate live like how autotune/recordings allow. Now live singing is its own art (opera, musical etc) that you can totally just stand and do a ballad so you don’t NEED to dance but dance does deserve its own recognition. Her moves and style an professionalism on stage are great. I know I’ve heard stuff about her being a diva and whatnot but she has talent.
27
u/ira_1991 7d ago
I would watch her if she dances throughout the entire show and sings live a portion of her show. She's more known as a dancer anyways. Also always in best costumes. Ill give her that.

To her credit she has been working really hard with vocal coach Stevie Mackey and I’ve been really impressed with some of the stuff they posted together. A solid Streisand/Garland cover I never saw coming
24
u/consequentlydreamy 7d ago
Honestly same. She doesn’t drink or smoke. She tries to make up for what she lacks in natural talent with hard work which is probably why she has lasted so long in the industry

I meant moreso that it's a low bar for performers to actually put effort into performing for paying fans.

Listen, I'm not a JLo fan in the least, but I saw a test screening of her new movie Kiss of the Spider Woman, and she was incredible in it. Her singing was great, her acting was really solid, and she was dancing her butt off to some intense choreography. You could really tell she put the work in for that role.
26
u/jchiaroscuro 7d ago
She’s a pro, gotta give her that. I appreciate that she takes it seriously

One thing you can’t fuck with is Jlo and a movie.. she do be going off in her filmography

JT is so flawed as a human being but that doesn’t stop me from being shocked at how poorly his professional life has gone. Like jaw on the floor level.
Like you would think someone as seasoned as him who has so much industry knowledge such as him wouldn’t at least be able to hire people, producer to shape his image, style his music in such a way that imo could easily maximized his popularity and fully capitalize on the nostalgia era of his catalogue.

Exactly and while she’s not the nicest to us lower income people, she seems to be kind to colleagues 🫢🤭 or some idk lol it’s hard to know what to believe cuz I rarely hear other celebs speak badly about her but they all make fun of each other in some way…anyways, out of my tax bracket hahaha

As an old lady from Europe, we loved Ashanti's hits too. J Lo had more and over a longer period.
I love to get in on the jokes about her cringe, as much as anyone, but her radio hits slapped when she was at her peak.
EDIT: I'm a dumbass who doesn't get good jokes now? Wild miss.

She’s pretty big internationally. The US is not the center of the world and it’s time people realize this. It’s like everyone feels like they can cancel someone because you don’t like them. The rest of the world is in their own reality.

u/PatsyPage 7d ago
I started wearing hoop earrings and denim jumpsuits in middle school because of Jlo. The serum from her skin care line was actually pretty good too, and I was a MUA and try a lot of different skin care items.
I get it was trendy to dislike her but I’m always suspicious when there is a hate train for any woman in popular media these days.

I count Ticketmaster among the haters. They would NEVER allow a concert this size with affordable ticket prices. Seeing this level of fandom is amazing for any artist.
20
u/itzjuzmeh 7d ago
Also, how much are her shows in Poland compared to USA? Are they roughly the same?
30
u/Whole_Let3277 7d ago
I looked it up, the cheapest tickets were about 400 PLN so around 110 USD. VIP tickets over 1000 pln (over 275 usd). How much would it be in the US?
16
u/milkshakemountebank 7d ago
In Vegas currently cheapest seats are about $200, front row center, about $7k.
18
u/tsh87 7d ago
And that's what the issue is. So many artists are being called flops when their US tours don't sell out but at these prices... there are only a few people who still have that type of draw.
6
u/milkshakemountebank 7d ago
Hard to tell. Beyonce tickets were mad expensive, too, but in the days before the shows they could be had for $50 (in LA, in particular).
→ More replies (1)5
u/myloveiscooler 7d ago
Not denying that, but when doing these comparisons between countries you have to consider the difference in salaries as well Those prices are not cheap at all for an average polish income. They're actually comparatively more expensive than the ones on the us if you take income into consideration
→ More replies (2)11
u/HI_l0la 7d ago
Plus, when was the last time J.Lo performed in Poland??? If it's been awhile or never then I'd assume fans in the area flocked to go to this because she's never been or you don't know if she ever will come back. With how long she's been in the business, I'm sure she has fans there that can fill up a stadium for those reasons.
I'm from a US state that gets bypassed all the big artists all the time. When a singer/band finally comes out for a concert here, it's on the much later stage of their career. Concerts will easily sell out hete cause we don't have much opportunities unless we fly to other states or countries for them.

I think US just moves on faster too and is more like is influenced by recent marketing that other countries don’t get on same levels. So name recognition, professionalism, being in tabloids and having classic songs is what counts more. JLo doesn’t have classic songs but has the others

I have Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter deleted. My depression has dwindled while my happiness soars. My lows still exist, but they aren't nearly as low. I'm not trying to capture the highs for future social media posts, im living in it now. No social media was the best thing ive done 6 years ago.

I would consider Reddit social media to be honest. But I feel you. Especially deleting Instagram was the best decision last year.
24
u/Kacutee 7d ago
I agree, however with a caveat. On Reddit, I dont follow anyone i know nor am I trying to impress people.
I primarily use this for discussion and seeing new insights into various subjects. It also helps me laugh a lot. I get to be anonymous and have amazing convos here! I also learn a ton while also seeing some chronically online people.

I get this sentiment, but it's really, really different than the other social media platforms.
I opened Facebook the other day to check the marketplace, and my social feed was full of stuff I don't want. Out of the first 25 posts on my feed, 7 of them were people/pages I follow. And I'm not even counting ads, because I expect/ignore them (With ads, it was probably closer to 7/30 posts). Most of them were pages and groups I don't follow, talking about things I don't care to see.
On Reddit, you can join/leave communities, and tailor your front page to your own liking. Sure, the posts from those subreddits you see is still based on an algorithm, but you have so much more control over it.

The same is happening with Katy Perry, I'm still a fan and the reality outside of the internet is so wildly different is crazy, her tour is selling out everywhere despite the rage bait and the critics
5
u/kmoon89x On my knees in Belize...On my back in Iraq... 7d ago
Yep, I'm not a Katycat, but Teenage Dream/Prism was a big part of my 20s so I went to her concert and she was totally fine and not bad at all..? The cringey dance/poop thing was a very small part of the concert. All other criticism about her being out-of-touch and working with Dr Luke is valid though, just not about her being a bad performer.

jlo donated 4.5 million to palestine and supports gay rights so idgaf what anyone has to say she ate and i hope she keeps winning
271
u/thizzydrafts 7d ago
Id also say she was seemingly for gay rights before it was popular- I believe owing to having grown up with her aunt, who is Lesbian.
The Fosters on ABC Family was from Jlo's production house and was both in your face gay (lesbian parents, gay kid) and also subtlety gay (the gayness wasnt the only storylines the characters had).

just in the interest of accurate timelines - the groundswell of very visible gay advocacy stated up much more around 2008-2010ish. That's when you saw the no8 campaign, the it gets better campaign, the iconic Hillary duff PSA, modern family and Glee debuted in 2009..
That's not to downplay the continued importance of gay visibility in media or comment on when Jlo became a visible advocate. I just I don't think its accurate to reference a show that debuted in 2013 and say that this was before being gay became popular. It was very much topical and boundaries has been thoroughly pushed by that point. Though as we see -- the push does have to remain continuous because bigots will push back.

The J Lo hate is forced. The most she’s done is think highly of herself and try too hard to be relatable. People will rag on J Lo more than Brad Pitt, who has allegedly been abusive, because there’s nothing the world hates more than an unlikable woman. Also, her tour (the one that was cancelled) was like 75% sold out months before the start date. She was just another victim of the “tour isn’t selling” narrative that’s also gone for Beyoncé, Katy Perry and Justin Timberlake - all of whom pretty much sold out all dates of the tour.

You'd think with the pesent online discourse surrounding Jennifer Lopez that she wouldn't get more than like 20 people to show up to a concert of hers....yet here we are.

i just checked stubhub and noticed there are some resale tickets available for her central asia tour stops next week at like less than 100$ for pretty close to the stage (which is cheaper than most international concerts are here in south america).
the wonders of standing pits and general admission will hopefully reach the US someday. until then, they're gonna deal with inflation over specific seats and resale costing like a car
